A lot of people say that Alienwares are the best, however some say you don't get good value for the money you pay for them. I just want to know what to Alienwares lack and what is the best gaming laptop I can get?

ASUS G74SX-3DE 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop - Republic of Gamers. The screen looks very good and the 3D looks as good or better than any I have seen. Even older games like Titan Quest IM that were not programmed specifically for this technology look pretty cool with it. I am pretty busy and do not play many games so I can not tell you about more recent games. But with the look of the demo shots that came with it, I would say they should look pretty good.

What kind of gaming laptop should I buy?

My current one is an Acer 7750G with 8GB of RAM and an Intel i7 core processor with a 17 inch screen.
This computer is about 2 years old now and like to get a new one similar to it.
I don't want a hardcore gaming laptop that costs $1,000 dollars and weights over 50 pounds
I'd like it to cost less than $800

As the other guys have said I doubt you would get anything better than what you have for $800. Those 775G i5's still retail for $1000 -1500 depending on the bells and whistles you get. But then you might as well spend that money on a Dell Alienware M14x R2 or something similar

These are gaming laptops but the cheaper ones are better than the computer you have, otherwise why replace it?
