best gaming laptop linux image

I plan to wipe the laptop and install Linux and Vista without all the dell software, so would dell hardware do well for light gaming, 3D graphics and word processing?
I mean, is there an advantage getting a Sony Vaio or a Toshiba over a Dell? From what i see they're including the same processors and graphic cards, and the RAM shouldn't really matter, right? Is there any clear reason why I should put a couple extra hundred dollars into a same speced laptop other than fashion?
Answer
If the system specs are equal, then don't spend the extra money. I like the Acer products and am impressed with the new Gateway we just got. Not at all happy with Toshiba. Dell is the most asked about system on this forum with problems. Even if processor, ram, etc are the same, the motherboard may be a different brand as well as the screen drivers. You will need the companies drivers from the component maker or system maker for the drivers in the MS operating system. There is no need to wipe Vista if on there because you can use it to make partitions and it comes with a dual boot loader. Will just need to load linux.

What is the recommended laptop for a soon to be freshman Civil engineering student?
Austin
Something around $1000 dollars would be preferable, and also I have ran into the dilemma on if I should get a laptop that's compatible with civil engineering programs, or just a basic laptop that most college students get because usually the college has computers with the programs on them.
Answer
It depends what school you are going to as far as providing computers, but I would look at delloutlet.com and pick up a mid-range gaming laptop with a decent screen, processor etc. The XPS models are pretty good. If you want to carry it around a lot you might look at the solid state drives since the hard drive will be the first thing to go if it is knocked around.
this will run any of the programs you might need, and you can wipe it or just run linux parrallel if that is something you want, plus civil engineers like to game so you can be a bit social and pwn newbs all night too. Save up for a key board, mouse, speakers and external harddrive as well for in your dorm/bedroom. Also I reccomend an HDMI out port so you can watch videos you download illegally on the TV in your room.
