Which laptop is best for gaming?

My laptop is getting old now, I've had it for five years now I think. I'm not sure if its the old age or the processor that affects gaming. So I need your help, ya'll laptop experts. I've been viewing a few laptops on amazon and I want to know which one out of these all would be the best for gaming. Oh and by the way I wont be installing like 10 games or anything, its mainly feral heart and arokai when its released and maybe one or two others. Oh and when answering please don't just randomly say which one out of the ones I list is best, I want a reason too, otherwise its a bit harder to trust someone when they just say something random right? Also you can suggest other laptops, but not if the cost is above £500. Ps: it isn't purely for gaming, its for homework and other stuff online too, I just want a laptop that responds well to 3d games.

I'm kinda leaning to the Asus because it looks pretty. We have 6 laptops in the house (including my old one and an even older one thats totally broken) and all I know are dark colours like black, navy and crimson thats why I quite like the white Asus, it would be way unique in the house LOL. But ignore me, your the experts and its about the best laptop on the inside, not how it looks xD.

Those are all bad choices.

For computer gaming, 75% of your performance is determined by your graphics card. So the graphics card is the single most important component for any gaming computer, laptop or desktop. It's the graphics card model that determines whether you get 6fps in games or 60 fps.

With desktop computers you can upgrade the graphics card- just pop a better one into the PCI-E x16 slot and you can easily triple or quadruple your performance over the factory integrated graphics. Sometimes installing a better card requires upgrading the computer's power supply too, since higher-end cards require more power.

But upgrading the graphics later isn't an option with laptops. The built-in graphics are permanent, so it's critical to choose a laptop with the best graphics card you can find that fits your budget.

Here's a list all laptop graphics adapters ranked by performance. For casual gaming you'd want a graphics card that's at least class 3 (the brown/amber group).

On a tight budget you'll want to check out laptops which have AMD's A-series processors (like the A4, A6 and A8). The A-series processors have MUCH better built-in graphics (APU) than Intel's processors, although the CPUs are otherwise slower. So the A-series processors are better all-around choices because everyday tasks like web browsing, e-mail, word processing etc don't require much CPU power- any dual-core or higher processor can handle that smoothly. But gaming REQUIRES a decent graphics adapter. If you wouldn't be gaming at all, then the HP G6 with the dual-core B960 would be the best choice.

Need help studying gaming laptops.?

I need to consolidate space at home and I have a lot of dead time at work so I am in the market for a gaming laptop. I mostly play World of Warcraft but if a game comes out that looks good, I'd like a machine that would be able to handle it at near max settings.

My budget for a laptop will be $1500-$2000. I've read a lot of best gaming laptops of 2012 articles and the Alienware M17 & M18 seems to be the top vote getters. I'm not looking to get one until early 2013 (so hopefully some of those better Alienware laptops will drop in price by then) but I want this to be something that will last me awhile.

What specs should I be looking for? What brands should I stay away from? Like desktops, is it more cost effective to order and build my own or should I go with a factory made? I need help with those kind of questions and anything else you think will be relevant in my search. Also, if you could please tell me why I need to pay attention to certain things, that also will be greatly appreciated.

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

In the coming months I am looking to buy a new laptop. I would like to know which company has the best build quality, longevity and repair ability that rivals all other brands. I know personally to stay away from Acer, Gateway, Emachines, and Apple since in my experience, that have poor build quality, don't last very long and have a distinct lack of repair ability so those are already out of the question. So is there any good suggestions?

Listening to a single opinion will not do any good unless they are in the laptop repair business, and even at that, warranty is handled by the manufacturer and sales volumes may skew percentages.

Now, I worked in Procurement Engineering for Thinkpad components for many years. I also worked with the actual manufacturers and true designers of the industry, as almost zero design work is at Acer, and very limited at HP, and now also limited at Dell. Lenovo G series "essentials" are the same industry products as those. Gateway is now a low end of Acer as is Packard Bell in Europe. Compaq is now another HP brand.
Lenovo's three lines are very distinct as Thinkpad, Ideapad, and Essentials. Thinkpad T and X series are the premium of the industry, but you will not find high end gaming graphics. Thinkpad in general is good. Samsung is shifting from internal assembly to OEM on more models. Toshiba low end also are the same generics while their business levels copy some Thinkpad features.
In general, try to avoid the very cheapest laptops as usually you are getting approximately what you pay for at the low end.
Asus, Samsung, Sony, Lenovo Ideapad Z and Y series and Thinkpads are generally the more reliable set of laptops as a whole.
According to surveys, Acer-Gateway, HP-Compaq, Dell tend to be more problematic, but it does not mean every one made is bad.
Performance for the money should be factored in.

Try to ignore adjective words like "stunning, lush, thin, light, smooth, fast, etc." and look for clear data. "up to" for a battery life between charges is not very helpful, but understand higher performance with the same battery is shorter battery life. The "up to" is with wireless off, screen set low, lowest CPU and graphics of a series, application running minimum. An HP customized with choices of CPU and graphics will show a very high "up to" hours.

Generally, the best you can buy is Lenovo T or X series. They are a business laptop. I know how they are designed, produced, and tested. Many have roll cages to minimize dropping damage, spill trays to reduce liquid damage, carbon fiber or fiberglass impregnated with resins instead of a painted plastic, premium keyboards and screens, lid latching, metal hinges, shock absorbers, battery management features with the AC/DC circuit designed at the Japan labs formerly IBM. They do not price as high as Apple Macbooks, but they are not cheap. They are milspec design found on the space shuttle/station and in military use. They have some tablets with gorilla glass, and even the Ideapad Yoga is a neat design coming off of the Thinkpad Twist.

A laptop is not upgradable for CPU and graphics after you buy it generally. Typically look at the high end of the pricing range you have in mind first, and then compare to cheaper models of various companies.

General PC sales global as a total have HP and Lenovo near tied for #1,2, Dell and Acer near tied 3,4, Asus #5 as the major players, but note that companies like Toshiba and Samsung are not selling Desktop PCs.

Consider also that Windows 8 is very much designed for touch screens, though there is software available that makes to look closer to Win 7

So what is the difference between laptop and netbook? A laptop (also called a notebook) is computer which has been designed to be made portable, featuring a screen hinged to a keyboard. A laptop includes a battery for portable power and a touchpad instead of a mouse for input.

Mini laptops (also called a netbook, subnotebook or ultraportables) take these ideas further still, creating a new market above handheld computers, smartphones and personal digital assistants. The primary characteristic of these are smaller size and weight, which are pretty similar to the average diary, as well as costing less than a standard laptop with prices starting at around £150, an excellent solution during the credit crunch!

Mini laptops aren't as powerful as bigger notebook computers, and lack the power for big, demanding programs as well as an optical disc drive - so no CDs or DVDs. None the less, connectivity is a central focus for netbooks. Internet downloads are quickly catching up on hard media products, so perhaps it's not such a loss.

In short, the difference between laptop and netbook is a netbook is smaller, lighter, cheaper (on the whole) and simpler.

New mini laptops are expected to sell in the region of 5.2 million units by the end of 2008, 8 million during 2009 and up to 50 million by 2012 - a ten fold growth. Industry analysts are torn whether or not subnotebooks will cannibalize the laptop market, some suggesting that a mere 10% market share will be taken. However, in this economic downturn, people will always look for cheaper products and with mini laptops available from £150-200, perhaps there is a big market after all.

So is it game over for the standard laptop and pc? Furthermore, when using a computer over a prolonged period of time, it would make sense to use a bigger screen and a faster processor of a desktop replacement laptop or a PC, particularly for demanding programs' such as games.

And finally, similarly priced but laptops, of varying quality, are available for around £200-300 leading some industry analysts to believe that the consumer focus will be on functionality and not merely size and weight.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, mobile phone manufacturers and providers are tapping into the netbook market with the Samsung NC10, LG X110 and Carphone Warehouse launching the Webbook - a branded laptop made by Elonex. Vodafone has linked arms with Dell with its Inspiron Mini 9, offering 3G mobile broadband contracts. Orange have followed suit with by cosying up with Asus and the Eee PC 901.

The difference between laptops and netbooks may seem very vague, but there is certainly space for both to function. If you've got a laptop, even reading this on one, lift it up. Feel the weight of it. Ask yourself, do I need all this extra space? Would I be better off with something smaller and lighter - if the answers yes, browse around the site.

As others have mentioned. Screen size is a little small. Graphics card is good, processor is good. Video RAM is fine (having more than 1 GB of VRAM is pointless unless you plan on using some very high resolution screens (as in 2-3 1080p screens at same time). RAM is fine (no reason to have more than 6 GB of RAM unless you use VERY HIGH RAM usage programs like multiple virtual machines and the like). A year ago that would be very high end but now it is on the low end of high end ranking or the high end of mid range ranking.

I wish to buy a laptop and want to know if it's compatible, and if that processor is better than pentium. I'm not tech savy.
I also want to know if a game requires 2.4 ghz to run does a 2.2 ghz computer with turbo boost also allow for function? and is turbo boost automatically enabled? I appreciate all and any help.

Rob, if you want to do any gaming, you must avoid the lowest end hardware.

the i3 is very low end, its basically the dai that failed every single test before it was put into a chip and branded i3.

The GPU is the most important part of graphics design and gaming, the cpu only makes a 5-10% performance difference.

Once again, the GPU is 90% of the gaming and graphics design of any computer.

Im glad you didnt just buy it, but instead took the critical first step in your research to find the perfect laptop for all of your needs.

Research and research until you really understand what it is that you need, only then will you be very satisfied and know that you will have the computer you need, that will last you many many years of its productive life.

Will a Fujitsu lifebook be good for gaming?

The graphics card is more important than the CPU in gaming, and I think the GT 525M is weaker than you want it to be. You should show a link to what it costs because Fujitsu is not a top 6 notebook selling brand and the full specs and price are important to see if something is better.
This $530 Acer at Amazon will significantly outperform the Fujitsu in gaming as the i5 Ivy Bridge is sufficient and the GT 630M is much better than GT 525M:

You are at low settings or insufficient to play at all on some of those games.
I think it is a bad choice. When you chose Fujitsu, it implies you are not USA so other than the reference Acer, I can respond to email if you want some advice on a decent system when you provide a little more about money and your buying options.
