Are electronic gadgets advantageous or disadvantageous?

Karren

Answer
Enabling Lifestyles

Electronic gadgets have seen a revolution. In the past, most gadgets served a single purpose: Phones called people; TVs showed television shows. Now, gadgets are evolving to be multi-purpose tools. Mobile phones today not only call, but most allow texting, email, web-surfing, and a host of other features. These gadgets, whether a computer or a phone, allow people to stay more organized, stay in constant communication, and gain access to the outside world much more easily than was ever possible without electronic gadgetry.

Business and Work

Laptop computers, personal digital assistants, known as PDAs, and smart phones eliminate the need for offices for some people. They make work possible that was once impossible without a physical office-hub. Now meetings can be held from nearly any location with a simple computer, microphone, and Internet access. The ability of websites to be established as hubs, working similarly to virtual stores, has also led to a revolution for consumers, opening up the world of Internet retail. The low cost of starting an online-based business as compared to a physical business also helps push entrepreneurialism.
Time and Health Concerns

Electronic devices are designed to save time and make people more efficient. For many people, though, the increase in new inventions take up more time. An efficient gadget might actually provide someone with less free time due to the assortment of additions it's providing. Regarding health, concerns have been raised about cell phones and brain tumors; however, according to the National Cancer Institute, as of 2011, no link has been determined to exist. Another health concern is that gadgetry tends to require immobility. Video games commonly take some of the blame for rises in childhood obesity during recent decades.

Environmental Impact

A commonly overlooked negative side to electronic gadgetry is their environmental impact. Non-biodegradable, non-recyclable electronic gadgets often end up in landfills or are shipped to crude facilities in developing countries. Without safe and efficient means of recycling, electronic wastes are burned to salvage bits of metal -- releasing toxic substances into the atmosphere, polluting the immediate environment and potentially nearby water resources as well. The rapid increase in the number of electronic gadgets, as projected by the International Energy Agency, not only means greater carbon dioxide emissions but also increasing energy demands that will need to be met.

Install OSX on PC Laptop?

Goal: I want to use Final Cut Pro with a Sony Vaio FW Laptop. I don't need Vista - what if I only install Leopard from Apple's disc?
Can I install Leopard on the Sony Vaio FW Laptop that I customized below on Sony's website?
Will this work?

Customized Sony Vaio FW 16.4" Laptop
--------------------------------------â¦
$2499.99
Intel® Core⢠2 Duo Processor T9900 (3.06GHz)
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit
Black
8GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 4GBx2)
128GB Solid State Drive
Blu-ray Disc⢠playback/burning
ATI Mobility Radeon⢠HD4650 graphics card with 1GB vRAM-great for games and movies
16.4" widescreen with XBRITE-FullHD⢠LCD technology (1920x1080)

I have nothing against Apple, I own a Macbook Pro. I just can't stand waiting for Apple to incorporate Blue ray disc players/burners and high resolution screens like on the Sony Vaio.

If your answer is "No" to my question, I understand. But, please don't tell me to get a new Macbook Pro - I have one right now. Recommend me any PC laptop that can run Mac OS Leopard that has equal or better specs than this Sony Vaio!!!! Or if your answer is "Yes" please share how I can do this. Thank You
Also, I only use Final Cut Pro - please don't told tell me to get some PC editing software.

Answer
What you are talking about is hackintoshing. I have a few links posted below to show you which Netbooks are best for hackintoshing. Currently, I do not recommend hackintoshing your Sony Vaio laptop because it could cause problems with the BIOS among other things.

I use windows 7 on toshiba lap.

Answer
you can search google for a gadget that shows battery and time left if time doesnt appear when you click on your battery icon in taskbar

let me tell you something, time left depends on your acts, if time shows 2 hours for example while led brightness is low, then suddenly you changed led to high brightness and start music with a 3d game plus downloading file from internet then believe me battery will not stay more that 20 minutes!!!!!!!!

but if you dont do that then time will be correct (not very accurate but some how in range)

if you need more help about batteries and power contact me at maxyoshida@rocketmail.com

What is Steam Punk and how can I get into it?

Ajrah

I have been intrigued in the style of Steam Punk, but other than just normal web searching and such, I don't really know what its about or how I can get into it. Please help?

Answer
Steampunk is sort of mashup of sci-fi and 19th century technology, such as the steam engine and elaborate clockwork mechanisms.

For instance, if you had to build a computer, but were living in 1880, what would it look like? It'd probably look like a huge pipe organ, with more flywheels and belts, for instance.

It's not really it's own genre per se.

If you ever watched the Back To The Future movies, and recall Doc's flying locomotive time machine - that's an example of steampunk, however the movies themselves aren't considered steampunk.

Steampunk has actually been around longer than the actual term has existed. The old TV shows, Wild Wild West (which is what the movie was based on) and The Adventures of County Briscoe Jr. are steampunk. The stories of Jules Verne are the very definition of steampunk. Comics like Girl Genius (read it online for free!) are steampunk. Anime series often have some steampunk elements in them. "Steam Detectives", "Sakura Wars", and "Nadia" come to mind immediately.

If you're into pen&paper RPGs, some systems, like GURPS have some steampunk modules you can look into. Wikipedia has a list of video games that have steampunk elements to them.

People have made some steampunk-inspired projects, such as a steampunk style "laptop" made from an old typewriter keyboard, and a handmade case made of solid oak. Of course, weighing in at over 100 pounds, it wasn't really that portable... Pretty, though.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "get into" steampunk. It's not like a lifestyle or anything - like being goth. At best it's a small sub-genre within the sci-fi/fantasy realm. I have heard of people cosplaying in the steampunk style, which basically involves dressing in 19th century style clothing, maybe with a gadget or something thrown in for good measure. However, short of building your own steam-powered mecha suit (anime is full of these) it's sort of a hard look to pull off convincingly.

Has any company developed an external enclosure for a graphics card to circumvent the heat issue?

Veritatum1

Just a thought I had, especially for slimline case PCs.
Is it possible to run power via the PCI-e slot to an external case that has a lot more space and fans around the card to keep the GPU cool and keep it from heating up the rest of the PC components?

Answer
Hello!

This is an interesting question, here's why nobody talks about it:

You want to have it external it must be because it's a big and hot card. If it's big and hot then it's a gaming card, if it's a gaming card, it has a heavy bandwidth. So the concern is finding a cabled interface solution that can keep those 4000 MB/s in bandwidth.

However External PCI-Express does exist:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#External_PCI_Express

The concept makes it possible and is mostly used for laptop applications. I have slim PC's myself, and they suffer from the lack of space. But hey: I love small, esthetic looking and silent PC's. But I love games too! So I figured that something was possible and I looked around without finding anything for those home theater PC's. Let's face it: you buy an HTPC for home theaters, not for gaming!

If we take a look at laptops, they also suffer from size and cooling limits and gaming laptops are no match because of their integrated or mobile graphics cards. But laptop owners are often gamers on the move to LAN parties and stuff. So that's where a few manufacturers came up with a solution for them: an external GPU's over the PCI-express bridge for laptops, the ExpressCard. Problem is that the ExpressCard bus is 250MB/s bandwidth, what a bottleneck! But this solution might suit your HTPC/slimline case PC, if you add PCIe ExpressCard Drive Slot expansion interface thingie!

Asus made the XG station, developped a couple of years ago, everybody thought they abandoned the project but I finally saw it in shops. An external graphic card docking case connected over Express Card, with a PCI-Express bus and room for one card taking 2 slots, it has cooling with controls and LED.

Here are some articles on the Asus XG Station:
http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=5369
http://hackezkk.blogspot.com/2007/07/asus-introduces-external-graphics-card.html

You got Magma with the ExpressBox, designed for general PCI-express peripherals, warn that you can only use a single width graphics card using a maximum of 55Watt power:
http://www.magma.com/products/pciexpress/expressbox1/index.html

Then AMD made an external slimbox, for laptops again. With a HD 3800 GPU, taking 4GB/s bandwidth over the express bus with its 250MB/s limit :)

Here are some articles about the AMD XGP:

http://ati.amd.com/technology/xgp/index.html
http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=13737

And what about the MSI Luxium:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/video-boost/msi-luxium-lets-you-add-an-external-graphics-card-to-your-notebook-266364.php
http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-2606-view-Msi-luxium-and-RX2600-geminium.html

If you add an Express Card interface on your slim PC you will be able to patch up a big size graphics card. Because of different interface combination and ExpressCard bandwidth it's theoretically impossible to reach the same performances as normally but I'm sure the results will be better than with small sized graphics cards that fit everywhere, I'm thinking of the Geforce 4 I had to settle with in the past... Ew.

Also if you're crazy, Quadro Plex! http://www.nvidia.com/page/quadroplex.html

I hope this helps!

I'm thinking, if I went to a consumer electronics show tied in with video games, what kind of gadgets would I like to see there including companies...i.e. I'd love to see the mod book, modified mac laptop to tablet even though it's not out yet.

Answer
It's time we had a cheap high def/HDTV lightweight head set. (Glasses) something that will work on gaming systems as well as lap tops and connectible to the new gen of video cell phones. the best of the old ones were only like 800x600 damn heavy and priced way out of reach! it's way past time we had something with 1600X1200 and capable to display a different image in each lens so we can do something close to 3D TV... something designed by Oakley so they look good too!

Where do I get the vista desktop sidebar for windows 7?

Rin Medea

I have just gotten a new laptop with windows 7 as the operating system and I am used to the sidebar in vista that could show the weather/date/games etc. I have tried just to google it and did find something but it wasn't the same as the sidebar I got with vista. Is there a special website I can go to to install one?

Answer
Right-click the desktop and there should be an option labelled "Gadgets." They've been improved over Vista in that they're no longer confined to a sidebar. You can drag them anywhere on the screen now.
