Can you overcome the lack of a 3D accelerator in a laptop for Gaming?

Wes or Ish

I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S165 with an 80 Gig hard drive and 1 Gig of Ram. It doesn't however have a 3D accelerator and one game I have "jerks" while playing it! The Heroes of Might and Magic V! And it happens to be my favorite, (NATURALLY)! Is there anyone out there who can offer helpful input concerning this subject?!?

Answer
About the only thing you can do is buy a pricey external 3D card for the laptop:

What is a good laptop?

I need help on buying the right laptop for all my gaming needs and it needs to have Internet, does anyone have any ideas?

Answer
I'm going to suggest a few laptops so that just in case the laptop you want is not available there, you have alternatives. Though, I highly doubt that it's not going to be available there.

Alienware Area-51 m15x - http://www.alienware.com/products/area-51-m15x-notebook_d.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M15X-AI1&SubCode=SKU-DELL&from=DELLINT:m15xvert&source=DLL0004&disc=1

The Alienware m15x is still probably one of the best portable gaming laptops out there. Its screen size measures 15.4 inches, so it's portable and still fits your needs. The price is $1,099. Prices may vary.

HP HDX 16t Premium series - http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Performance+and+entertainment&series_name=HDX16t_series

The screen is just a little bit bigger than the Alienware m17x but still good. This is slightly better than the Alienware m17x. This is truly made for entertainment managing. The nice casing of the laptop is a plus! The price is $1000. Prices may vary.

HP HDX 18t Premium series - http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Performance+and+entertainment&series_name=HDX18t_series

The HP HDX 18t laptop is 2 inches bigger than the HDX 16t version. It is slightly better than the 16t but it has more features than the 16t. This isn't so portable because of its size and weight, but that depends on you. The price is $1,300. Prices may vary.

**Asus G50Vt - http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=fdhHRbJtRlOCqy5C

This laptop is mainly for gaming. It has a 15.4"-15.6" screen (it depends on your preference). The price of this laptop varies because Asus doesn't show the prices of their laptops on their site but I checked some sites and the price of this laptop doesn't go over $1,400.

Alienware Area-51 m17x - http://www.alienware.com/products/area-51-m17x-notebook.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M17X-GC&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

This laptop is one of the best yet. It has Intel's Core 2 Duo Extreme Mobile processor made specially for gaming.

Upcoming laptops:

Asus G71Gx:

http://i.gizmodo.com/5166943/there-is-12gb-of-ram-in-this-asus-g71gx-laptop-desktop-in-a-box

Clevo D900F - http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/03/hands-off-with-core-i7-packin-clevo-d900f/

Those are all the laptops I recommend. I hope this helped.

If you don't like the laptops I suggested, I suggest getting a laptop with an nVidia graphics card because more games are compatible with nVidia graphics cards than ATI graphics cards.

if i can't do that what about being able to do the same thing with a portable dvd player?

Answer
You would need a 720p to VGA scaler (EXPENSIVE!!!) Or, If you're just looking for portableness, try these sites:

What should I buy- iPod Touch or a netbook?

Ol' Dustin

Ok, for Christmas, I got $130. And my birthday is coming up in a week or two, and I usually get $80-$100 for my birthday. That would be enough to get an iPod touch, but I'm wondering if I should just save up that money until I get enough to get a netbook.

What would you do??

Answer
What you end up getting is totally up to you. If you want to carry your media in your pocket then the iPod would be the choice to get. It's loaded with features and it's the best portable media player out there.

I think the better investment would be with a netbook, which now are averaging 8+ hours. There's a whole new generation of netbooks coming and they have much more specs. If you want to have many benefits of a normal size laptop in a small form factor then get a netbook.

I have owned some Acer Aspire Ones and they have been great. I plan on getting another "next gen" netbook this year (hopefully one with e-ink technology and multitouch features)
