Should I buy a regular windows laptop or a MacBook?

Travis

I'm 16 and I really want a laptop and I've never owned one before but I've always used desktop computers I'm mostly going to use the laptop for music and stuff... And what ways can I save/get money for it?

Answer
If your looking to play games, movies, music and lots of multimedia then go Windows

However, if your going to use it for creating and editing music and movies go Hackintosh, a Mac OS in a windows, Linux, 86x pc or laptop.

If your looking to stream Music to an android phone and an OS with a good Appstore, then find a cheap laptop thats hand made without any OS and download Linux Ubuntu and install it on your laptop

what type of laptop would you recommend?

Hey guys! I'm shopping for laptops but I don't understand them at all! So, obviously I have a budget so I can't buy like the best stuff and I'm hoping to go perhaps during boxing day or whatever to get a better deal or maybe to the states ( I live in Canada ). I download a lot of music and all that crap even though I eventually will delete my music or i'll store it in a memory stick but I need a LOT of hardrive memory. Is 500GB enough or is that not so good? What brands would you guys suggest? My price range would be around $400-$800 I would say $800 max but I may stretch to like $900 IF and only if it is a really good deal but i honestly don't want to spend that much. I prefer a MAC but seeing that those are way too expensive that's out of the picture. Any suggestions? What should I look for in a laptop? Thanks guys!!

Answer
The best brands for laptops are HP, Toshiba, Compaq and Gateway. Personally, I love HP's. They are great laptops and I plan to buy one myself. I would highly recommend you stay away from Dell and Sony's as they can be a real pain and expensive to fix. As for a hard drive, for the average person, 500GB is more than enough so a 500GB hard drive is a good size to go with. As for CPU brands, there's only Intel and AMD. Both brands are fine, but personally, I would go with an AMD x64 (64 bit processor). I'm not sure if they still sell x86 (32 bit) processors in laptops, but incase they do, be sure to ask for a laptop with a 64bit processor. And aside from the laptop brand, hard drive size and CPU (processor), all the other hardware is just standard hardware. However, if you are a gamer, then you should also ask for a laptop with a better graphics card inside. That's IF you are a gamer. If you're not, then don't worry about the graphics card.

And as for what Brucethemoose said, technically, he's right about a Mac being a PC, even though they are not really known as or referred to as such. As for installing Mac OS onto a PC, he's right, but he's also wrong. He's wrong because you can't install a standard version of Mac OS on a PC because PC's don't allow reading of Mac OS DVD's, plus, standard Mac OS doesn't support AMD processors as Mac only uses Intel. However, he's right because you can install Mac OS on a PC, BUT, you can't use a standard Mac OS installer DVD from Apple. It has to be a Hackintosh (hacked) version for a PC to even read the DVD and Hackintosh does support AMD. But, as for installing Win7 on a Mac, the only way I have ever heard of that being done is by using a Mac app such as Parallel or other VMware programs on Mac to do that.

What laptops are best for gaming and multimedia?

me,myself,

Mac, HP, Dell, Asus, Sony, Alienware?
I know that mac good for multimedia but not gaming and that alienware is the best for gaming but I want a laptop that is good for multimedia like a mac but can also handle games like warcraft 3,ragnarok, and counter strike.

Answer
Mac is only good for multimedia because of Mac OS X and several MAC only programs.

Alienware is the best for gaming. You can install Mac on it. Search "hackintosh lifehacker"

are MSI laptops good?

Q. ive never heard of this company until recently. I went to their website and their laptops seem very good and cool. Some of the features they have i cant even find on HP and Dell and Sony. I want a laptop for college and play some games on it, but i dont want a "gaming" laptop. What do u think about MSI. their laptops seem way cooler than the other brands i mention. thanks.I really dont know how the perform cus i haven seen one yet, and thats one problem? where do u go to test them out if you want to buy them? and how can you buy them? i notice you cant even get them at the website. Anything helps. thanks.

Answer
MSI is most known for their motherboards and OEM video cards but recently they have been making waves in the notebook arena.

The MSI netbook is most notable for use as a hackintosh. Many have converted one into a Macbook Pro with little problems.

Yes.. the notebooks are cool looking and MSI is well known by those of us who build computers. I would trust one... but if something goes bad, I can fix it too.

Can I put a 1gb graphics card in my Macbook Pro?

miles

I would like to upgrade my NVIDIA GeForce GT graphics card with 512mb of discrete memory to something more powerful. I am using a Macbook pro with Windows Vista 64 bit installed, and I would like to play games in higher quality. Does anyone know if that is possible, and are there any recommendations?

Answer
No. Not possible.
1) As with most laptops, the GPU is highly integrated to the main logic board (motherboard for PC users). You can't change it out without breaking the board.

2) For an apple? Drivers would be horrendous for anything aftermarket. Worse than a hackintosh. Even if it were possible, you wouldn't get any support, and the MBPro already gets ridiculously hot.

If you want gaming, get a PC desktop, or spend 4000-5000 on a gaming laptop. ALSO, the new MBPro actually has a pretty powerful graphics chip, relative to what's out there. Most of the 1GB cards you'd find for a desktop are actually quite slow. You usually only get a benefit of the larger video RAM when running 1920 (a little) or more noticeably when running 30" at 2560.

You should do a little homework about video technology before you go tearing apart a 2000-3000 Apple laptop.

Should I install Hackintosh on my laptop when I get my new desktop?

Kalyway 10.5.3

This is just a poll, btw.

I'm not a gamer, but I don't mind playing simple games once in awhile and I surf the Internet watch videos on YouTube, and I like making music for fun so guitar band would be cool. Is a Mac a good choice?

Answer
As long as you're not a gamer and don't mind spending 3 times the money on a MacBook, it's a great choice.

I personally wouldn't buy one, because they are extremely overpriced for their hardware. I'm a gamer too, that's not why I wouldn't buy one, I just couldn't stomach paying a huge overpriced fee for something I know could be bought retail for thousands of dollars less.

The Operating System is absolutely beautiful though. I don't care what anyone tells you, as someone who works and lives completely in the worlds of computers with a list of certs a mile long and a Bach. in Computer Science.... the Mac OS is just amazing. Their utilization of that overpriced hardware is a work of art and their simplistic user interface designed for people who really don't know much about computers, while still built on a Unix core allowing power users access to the types of things we need and want, is just astounding.

When/if they finally make a Mac OS that will run on non-proprietary hardware, they may not kill Windows but, they will definitely take more than a considerable chunk out of their market percentage. (Hackintosh doesn't count)

Can the new Macbook run Call of duty 4 and 5 on bootcamp through XP or vista, the new macbook is the alluminium one.
If not, if you are shure that it can't, because you have tried, i will have to buy a macbook pro for myself. I love gaming, and need a laptop:i travel alot.

Answer
It can, but you'll have to turn the settings down to get a good frame rate.

I've run QuakeWars in both Mac OS X and Windows Vista...and it ran better in OS X. I doubt that'll be the case with CoD, however, since it uses this thing called Cider that basically translates Direct3D to OpenGL and kills frame rate in the process, even on my MacBook Pro (early 2008 - Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz and GeForce 8600 512 MB) and my Hackintosh (C2Q 9650 and GeForce 8800 Ultra).

how can I make my own Hackintosh netbook?

Outspoken

I've seen people selling used PC (Intel) netbooks that are "hacked" to run the Mac OS X. Ca I simply buy an Asus, etc netbook and just install the Mac OS?

Answer
It's a bit more complicated than that. But more or less, yes.

I've done a couple hackintoshes before. It generally takes lots of patience and a good bit of technical expertise (or at least troubleshooting ability). But if you're game, and you're willing to spend 10-20 hours tweaking settings, reinstalling, failing, and trying again, then check out:

http://wiki.osx86project.org/

It's an excellent resource with lots of how-to guides. If you're willing to buy a netbook for this express purpose, then look there first and see if there are any netbooks that are particularly osx friendly. Laptops are generally easier than desktops because they have a defined set of hardware so, chances are, someone has already figured out the appropriate settings and posted them. So you may have a lot more luck than I did.

However, even so, there's often little quirks. For instance, on my Dell Inspiron 600m, I had no wired internet and no hardware graphics acceleration (so things were a bit clunky). Though everything else worked pretty well (including WiFi). So I was able to use it for iPhone development for a while. But I gave up and bought a MacBook Pro later on because it was a huge pain to stay updated. So maybe things are a bit easier now.

Good luck!
