What is the best laptop for me?

Joe C

Im looking for a new computer that isn't too expensive. I want to have at least 150 gigs of memory for having alot of music. Another important thing is I want a laptop that is good for playing games. Games like Empire Earth, Age of empires, and Roller Coaster tycoon. Games like that, not crazy ones that need a really good computer. I don't want to spend more than $500, unless its really worth it and what im looking for. Thanks

Answer
ASUS laptop.

Brand buying advice

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. My experience with them are limited because the few I worked on made me think they were designed in such a way as it would take a blow torch and a jack hammer just to disassemble them.

Choose wisely.

Is this a good gaming laptop?

Richard

http://www.cel.ro/laptop-notebook/notebook-acer-as5750g_260mnkk-i7-2630qm-500gb-4gb-nvidia-gt540m-l/

Site's in Romanian, but I think you can make out what everything's supposed to mean.
I also plan on using it in college, to write during lectures. Got tired of pen and paper, and I plan on saving trees 15 notebooks at a time :).
Eh, I don't want a high-end gaming laptop. Crysis 2 on medium with 40 fps sounds just about what I'm going for in a laptop. I'm not one for graphics, gameplay is the order of the day. But I'd like it if games didn't stutter like Professor Quirrell from Harry Potter when I play.
Also, the price range of the laptop should be around 700-800 â¬. The laptop I linked to is approx. 660 â¬

Answer
Yes as far as laptops go it is good for gaming, you wont get max graphics settings on the demanding games but they should all run smoothly at medium settings.

IE Crysis 2 at medium settings will get you close to 40fps

Well done saving the earth btw!

Even the most demanding games will run smoothly on lower settings at least for the near future.

If you can find one with a geforce gtx500 series graphics card you will do a bit better but the price will be significantly higher.

That one you have found seems like a very good price, you wont find one much better for around there.

Answer
I dont know, i think Alienware would be the best thing. Your right though they are expencive, have you tried any of their cheapest comps. or laptops? My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5100, but it cant handle my games. It overheats alot and no its not the battery, i checked. I think a 300 dollar laptop would suit you fine, try an HP.

How much exactly is the XPS M1330 laptop from Dell?

I have been looking for a laptop for a little bit now and this laptop is the exact same one that my mom has but its just two inches smaller. My price range is 900-1000 but i really dont want to go over that; but if its by like 50 bucks or so its fine. The link to the laptop is really confusing me. So basically my main question is, what is the real price of this laptop?

Answer
This laptop comes standard at 750, however i would suggest NOT buying directly from a manufacturers website. As much as I love dell, they will hit you with unreasonable costs when you try and add-on simple things like ram and video cards. I would suggest looking at a site like Newegg.com, the best place on earth to find good computer deals. For instance -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115540&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL070209&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL070209-_-Notebooks-_-L1A-_-34115540

This laptop is 800 dollars, comes with free shipping and all the warranties you would get from the manufacturer's site, with an additional warranty if you are willing to pay 50/100 dollars. This pc has a 16inch monitor , 2.4 ghz processor (opposed to the 2.0 dell), 4 gigs for ram(opposed to the 3 in dell) and a great video card that will handle any games or video editing programs you throw at it, the geforce 9600.

Hey yahoo, i recently purchased a HP DV6 laptop for £550 and although it's fun and all, it's a bit big. is there a way i can sell for around 80-90% so i can buy a smaller alternative?

Answer
The problem some people would say with manufacturers is, they develop products to quickly then five minutes later its obsolete. But manufacturers have to do this and be on the ball five, ten or more years previous to releasing products on the market, so further new technology can be produced with consumer demand.
You now need to move also like the manufacturers 'quickly' so as to sell this product without losing out too much, but its a hard deal to do. There is so many 'cutting each others throat' to sell laptops with similar specs, at rock bottom prices as new releases are nearly every few of months. But there's still hope. One could use Ebay but its a risk of losing through bidding; open an account with Amazon and sell it, but also a risk as you may have to reduce the price over time to sell; Research for other websites using you preferred method of browser engine search that can sell your laptop. Other suggestions maybe a friend or family member would consider buying it, but could risk conflict if something goes wrong. Maybe sell it through a free ad in the local paper using direct attention words such as 'QUICK' sale NEARLY NEW if its a Quad core highlight that or like mine OCTOMultiCore. Use window shop Ad board; but let me bring you down to earth a little; you will only get 40 to 50% maybe 60% of what you paid, because what you want, others are already purchasing. Its very much like a new car once you buy it, it's already lost its value even though it hasn't been driven out the show room; by anything up to or exceeding 25% depending make and model. The same goes with computers, gadgets and pretty much all manufactured goods.
One question why purchase something the same? its a good spec although maybe not so good for top end (Hardcore) gaming. Just because it's smaller just means more money for retailer and less for you :) If your looking something for gaming, media, programming etc build a computer to your own specs like I do and some other "nerds" out there at a fraction of the RRP cost.
Still not convinced?
Lets recap Ebay, Amazon, Gumtree, sell it for cash there's some websites doing this etc, friends & family, Local paper, local shop ad board (Ask first as an Ad may incur a price) or keep it and enjoy it like you say you do.
One last thing, and it may not be what you were thinking off, but I do this from time to time and get a priceless heart warming buzz when I do this, and DV I'll do it again this Christmas also; If you can 'give it away' to someone who would 'really' love it. :)

More than likely your computer doesn't meet the recommended system requirements and your grapics card can't handle all the graphics needed to display the game. I suggest you add more details about your computer and ask your question again. You can email the question if you choose so.
