Desktop Vs Laptop In Gaming?

Q. Why is a desktop better than a laptop in gaming and what should i look for in a gaming desktop.....(in the market for a good one on a decent budget.)

Because laptop graphics can't handle new games. Even with an expensive gaming laptop you're going to be stuck with medium quality in games. You also can't upgrade the card in most. Or upgrade anything for that matter, except maybe your ram or hard drive.

In a desktop I'd get a pretty good video card, somewhere in the 300-500 range. AMD processors are pretty affordable, even for the best ones they have. I would get something like that with 4 to 8 GB of ram and a 1TB sata HD by seagate or western digital. Maybe a 750 watt thermaltake power supply and you'd be pretty set. Just don't go too cheap on your motherboard.

You could add a pretty decent monitor, keyboard, mouse, case and a dvd burner to that setup and it would probably only run you 1200 to 1500 dollars versus a gaming laptop with the same specs would probably run you over 2k and still have worse graphics.

Hi, I'm wanting to spend around a thousand dollars for a new computer. I'm a high school student, just to let you guys know.
The problem is, I cannot choose between a desktop and a laptop.
I know the pros and cons of both, but the problem is, I am a foreigner, and I go back to my country once or twice every year.
I stay in my country for about a 3 months, and I honestly can't find anything better than gaming to do.

I know that a desktop will provide me a better gaming computer, but I need my computer with me just for that time of the year of traveling.

So what do you guys think? Should I get a desktop with everything better but portability, or a laptop with more price but same specs as the pc?

Do you think I should just pause gaming for a few months, and get a great PC? Or should I just get the laptop for portability, (like I told you, I don't travel a lot, but I travel once or twice for long periods of time)?

Please, could you guys help me choose? I'm really stuck on which one to get, and I haven't gotten my Christmas gift yet.

Oh yeah, I don't really care much for upgrading, as long as the laptop lasts 2 to 3 years, I'm fine. But it needs to run SC2 and Crysis on Highest settings.

Well, if you are willing to sacrifice the portability, I would definitely go with the desktop. Even if you get a REALLY advanced, expensive, "so-called" gaming laptop, the games will never EVER run as smoothly or as efficiently. Complex CD-ROM based games (like the Sims 3) run much slower and crash a lot, and Internet games (like WOW) are INCREDIBLY slow even with a perfect Internet connection.

If it's Internet games you're into, then take into account that you won't be able to play them for a few months. Things might change, updates might be put in place, etc. Would that be okay with you?

If you're more into CD-ROM based games, then suck it up and give them up for a few months. They'll be there when you get back. It will just make it so more satisfying when you play them when you get back.

All in all, if you're looking for better gaming experience, I would opt for the desktop. But if you can't live without your internet games for a month or two, and you can deal with the lowered gameplay ALL the time, go for the laptop.

Ultimately, it's your money and your decision.

Gaming PCs: Laptop vs. Desktop?

I'll be going to college here pretty soon and I am planning on getting a high end gaming computer and currently have a desktop. I know that desktops are normally much better for gaming, the only con is that you have to buy seperate keyboards and monitors and such and they are a pain to lug around although if i was to get a desktop, i would keep it in my dorm obviously. Say i get a $1500+ gaming laptop and play the crap out of it and running high-end games on ultra settings with max resolution (and i do have a very good laptop cooling pad ) and play new games constantly every day. Will it wear out after a while and burn up the processors easier than a desktop would? Price isn't a problem for me and i know where to get a good pc i just need to know overall which is better, a desktop or a laptop. :p thanks

Even a gtx680M will NOT max demanding games like BF3, farcry3, etc

If you wish to be maxing current games, you will either need atleast a gtx680MX or 2x gtx670/675M in sli.
That probably isnt going to happen for under $1500.
Also even though that setup may play games out now on max settings, id say in 6months, games released then wont be able to be maxed.

Desktops are always better then laptops for gaming and any other demanding tasks.
To get a good gaming laptop to max games out now, $1800-2200+
To get a good desktop that will max games for probably a year+, $1200-1500

If you are dead set on getting a laptop, i would suggest

Go with the $1749 one ( http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_info&model_name=NP9370 ), and get the dual gtx670MX gpus, and you should be able to max games fairly well. id suggest the thermal compound upgrade aswell, it will help with temps.

Also id suggest getting a SSD+HDD combo (like 120GB SSD + 750GB 7200rpm hdd).
And i believe they are giving a free wifi upgrade aswell, so why not.

8GB of ram is more then enough for gaming in 5years lol. Even hardcore gaming and multitasking at the same time, ive never broke the 4GB mark. so having more then 8 does literally nothing for performance.
and cpu upgrades will only provide marginal performance increases to gaming.

I would like pros and cons of both. At the end tell me which one is better for me. Probably 400-700 price range and very light gaming. 4 games as of now but may try more. Star Wars the Old Republic (when it comes out), Star Wars KOTOR2, Star Wars Empirexat War, and Zoo Tycoon complete collection. May try more though but not a huge PC fan but im startin to get into it.

Pros: Fast, Reliable (with a steady power source), Great amounts of storage vs pricing, Good Graphics, and everything about it is externally plugged into it (no track pad/built in keyboard), and you have the option to upgrade to better parts (more RAM, better CPU, better graphics card etc.)
Cons: It's not portable, lag can still hit you hard with some higher end spec games, and generally while everything can be externally plugged into (mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor etc.) you can do this with a laptop as well. Also, if you lose power suddenly, there goes your games current state, back to your most recent save (or further depending on how bad the crash is.)
Laptop
Pros: Portable, Can survive with no power source long enough to save a game.
Cons: Graphics aren't really meant for gaming, generally slower, and unless you buy external devices (keyboard, mouse etc.) you have a set screen size and no mouse, making gaming a pain. All the parts are pretty standard, so you can't change them out, meaning whatever it can run, it can run. And what it can't, it can't. I think the only interchangeable part in my laptop is the RAM and HD, so it's pretty set on graphics and sound limitations.

But, based on the games you've listed, for 400 - 700, either will be fine really. The only game you may have problems running is Star Wars the Old Republic, as it's not out yet, and probably will have high end requirements that most laptops won't meet (I'm on a 600 dollar laptop, an acer, and I can run most games, even things like Oblivion, Minecraft and several other 'high end' games with little to no lag on default settings.) But, if you're looking for more for you money, go with a desktop, as you can always upgrade them later on.

I've seen some gaming laptops selling for around 4000.00 US dollars. Why are they better than a 300.00 Xbox? Especially with the rumors that the new Xbox will have 16 cores. I can see spending thousands if you need Microsoft for heavy duty video editing and similar stuff like that. Thank you

Personally I think gaming laptops are foolish, high end graphics cards produce a lot of heat, something a laptop is poorly suited to dealing with. Way more expense for similar performance in a laptop vs desktop as well.

There are ways in which consoles are better, but development has seemingly shifted away from some of those strengths (couch co-op games where have you gone?)
