Best laptop for gaming, and college?

My budget is $1500. The games I'd like to play on it are battlefield 3, The Sims 3, Team Fortress 2, etc. For school I would need it for video editing, graphic design, Microsoft Office, etc. I would prefer something lightweight. What would you recommend?

To be very honest gaming laptops which are dedicated for games do not have lightweight. They have usually a weight of around 10 pounds. But on the other hand they are just awesome in playing games and performing other tasks.

So as you have mentioned many of the games and also you do have a good budget so I would recommend you to go for a pure gaming laptop. Asus has one good option which you can consider. It is technically really strong. Its features include:

I would recommend this laptop. I do agree this is heavyweight laptop. But I think it is better to see the features which are just awesome and in the end they will be reflected in the performance as well. On the hand there are other options as well in the market. Laptop for gaming and college?

My budget is around 1000, i could pay more but id like to keep it there if possible. I would like a laptop I can do college work on and play games like eso and maybe bf4. I would like to be able to play on high quality and resolution settings and still run smooth. I'm planing on going into mechanical engineering so I might need to be able to handle software for that too.

@spongebobLULZ: The viability of two laptops is heavily dependent on configuration. With the T530 you'd want at least the upgraded 1600x900 display (not the stock 1366x768) in general, as well as the NVIDIA NVS 5400M for GPU-intensive things such as gaming and probably mechanical engineering software. For the DV6, you'd want the upgraded 1920x1080 display (not the stock 1366x768) in general, and the upgraded GT 650M GPU in this case.... But there are other options I think are a better choice here.

- Avoid the cheapest model. The cheapest model comes with a display that's 15.6" with 1366x768 resolution. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen rather large, the resolution itself doesn't let you fit much onscreen, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution are almost always low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. Getting a decent display is one of the most substantial ways to make an impact on your user experience, and a 15.6" 1366x768 display is not a decent display -- it's actually pretty bad.

I'm low on cash all the time and I'm in college. I need a laptop for college but I want to be able to play FPS shooter games on it like Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Counter Strike: Source. Everytime I get close to having enough money to buy one I get hit with some bill that I have. I have tried to get it through my finace department in school but they say that I can't, But I still see everyone else getting it through them. I don't want to to have to get a credit card or any drastic measures that could hurt my credit in the future. any advice will help.

You must spend your money for the best brand.

As I know HP and Dell are the best in laptops for a long time and they are very reliable too. I trusted HP and I bought a HP laptop 2 years before, and still like the day I bought it. Didn't even have to service it at least once up to now.

I recommend you to buy a HP (with experience) or Dell laptop.

It's a gaming laptop, but I'm purchasing it also for note-taking when I start college this fall. It's refurbished, but the new batteries last just as long. I'm not sure if it's going to last 2 hours 35 minutes while playing games, or if it will last longer when just using Microsoft Word, etc. I was wondering if anyone out there has this laptop and is willing to give me some insight on this issue? Or maybe if you own a similar laptop with the 2.5 hour estimated battery life, and can let me know if that holds true? Thanks!

Pretty much what Fred said. The estimated battery life they give you is when the computer is running at bare minimum. Not too many background services, very light work like reading news online, low power settings, etc. (Not all laptops are rated the same way but generally when running the minimum).

If you're gaming, expect that estimated battery life to drop significantly. I lost an hour when gaming since it requires a lot of power to keep that game running smoothly. I don't have the same laptop but expect a drop in battery life when playing games. About 30 minutes+ drop for games like Skyrim or Battlefield 3. Browser games like Tetris or maybe just Windows game, like Solitaire, will probably only drop somewhere insignificant like 5 minutes, my guess.

If you're using Microsoft word or whatever light on resources for a computer then you're fine. Just expect 2 hours at most as a safety net. Lower power settings like brightness, hard drive activity, antivirus to gamemode if you can, etc.

I'd be using it strictly to play "Star Wars the Old Republic". So I'd need a pretty good graphics card and good ram doing at least 6 gb. What is better and more practical for college?

I want a gaming laptop and im willing to spend about $3300 on one, but this laptop will also be the laptop i will be using for college. Currently i am looking at the alienware m17x or the Sager Np9280. What im worried about is the size and weight of these computers, they are 17inches and and the sager is about 12 lbs. Do i really want to be carrying these powerful machines around with me, another option i was thinking about was to get an HP mini or another small computer with this laptop, but idk

For that amount of money, you should be able to get about any gaming laptop you want. A 12 lb. laptop would definitely not be very portable. . .if you intend on carrying it around with you often, that probably won't be your best option.

I did a quick search for 17" gaming laptops using Laptop Scout
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-laptop-scout/default.aspx), and found some that might work. One of the matches was the Alienware model you listed, and another was the Falcon FragBook NW TLX. It's priced at about $2446, but it weighs in at about 7lbs., boasts a great looking LCD screeen, a great graphics card, and uses the fastest processor that Intel makes. It might be a good fit for you.

There are a couple other laptops at the site, I recommend you head there and use the Compare tool to see how they match up with one another. Hopefully it'll help you find the gaming machine that's right for you.

You'll want to focus on two aspects: The GPU, and the display.

The GPU is the primary determining factor for game performance. Game performance tends to be bottlenecked by the GPU before any other performance-related spec -- CPU, RAM, etc. -- makes its way into relevance for concern.

The display is a key point to focus on, in that once you start getting into price ranges that make it reasonable for you to get a decent display, you want to try to get a decent display. The differences between available displays is one of the things that makes the most difference, because of how significant the differences are between displays, and because it literally affects everything you do. 15.6" 1920x1080 displays and 17.3" 1920x1080 displays are examples on the good end of the spectrum. They're great in that the resolution lets you fit a lot onscreen, and in that displays with those size-resolution combinations tend to be decent quality LCD panels with good colors/contrast. This is in contrary to displays such as 15.6" 1366x768 and 17.3" 1600x900, which make things onscreen large and tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like that when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

As covered a little bit above, less important are CPU and RAM. Most concern for these specs stems from dishonest marketing courtesy of manufacturers, resellers, and retailers. Focus on the things that are important and, more often than not, the computers you'll find that do well in the areas that are important to be concerned with, come with more than enough in these areas.

MacBooks, or just Macs in general, are not generally great for gaming. You may find the MacBook Pro is adequate, but for heavy gaming typically a PC is ideal. Alienware is a great gaming PC line, they can make a few nice gaming laptops for under $1000. There are a few good Mac laptops out there, but usually the ones any good for heavy gaming are crazy expensive. Though I personally think Macs are cooler (I used to own one) get a PC for gaming.

I plan on using it for word documents, web browsing for research and social networking, music, videos, movies, photos, and general things like that. No games. This is a laptop for college. I really like Apple products, but I looked at prices and they seem to be pretty costly.

Also I don't know the fancy terms you computer elitists use, so you don't have to bomb me with stuff I will probably have no idea what you're talking about. LOL
