Q. I am currently a college student and have always preferred a desktop. It also appears that it is possible to get more for your money with a desktop, but I am also wondering what the difference is when an I core 5 or 7 is found in a desktop in comparison to a laptop, as well as the difference in graphics cards...also is this laptop a good deal for the money?

I will give you some pointers but do your own research,
(1) You don't need the i7 for your needs, because it is a quad core hyper threading processor, and you will never scratch the surface of it's power.
(2) Windows 7 Home Premium was never developed for the i processor
(3) Most of the software you will be using will be 32 bit applications
(4) You will need to buy 64 bit application software in the future
If you must go for the i processor then the i5 is the one to go for, it's cheaper and will do the more than you will ever need to do. Next use an alternative operating that is years a head of MS that have already got the drivers for the i processors and capabilities for hyper threading.
Microsoft will not have these capabilities until the release of windows 8 at the end of this year or sometime in 2012, My advice to you is do your research on the Free Linux kernel (operating system). It is supported and developed by Intel, IBM, AMD, Nvidia, ATI,
Linux runs the worlds fastest HPC (High Powered Computers) It runs it Internet, Check out these web links for your research

Asus g75 vs Lenovo y500?

Hi guys, I'm a college student and need a laptop that is dependable and long lasting.
Now, the Lenovo y500 has dual graphics which I can get for $1099, whereas compared to the Asus g75 with only a single graphics card (benchmarked at 1600+ vs 1200+ x 2 for the Lenovo).
The processors for the two laptops are the same at 3630QM (i7),
It seems like Asus doesn't have that good of a support crew compared to Lenovo.
I personally think that the Lenovo is more versatile, I could also get a cheaper version with 8GB of ram and a normal 1000GB Hard Drive for $1000.
What do you guys think?

I currently own the lenovo y500 and I have owned a asus laptop before, not to mention I have 2 family members who also own asus laptops.
the y500 has the more professional look and is has a slightly better classy feeling due to the aluminum lid finish and all around the keyboard.
in terms of performance and reliability, I have yet to notice any bdsm or random shutdown or restart, the system is very reliable even under extreme pressure, I don`t think asus improved their gaming laptops keyboards by much but from my experience the y500 has an above average keyboard which is comfortable to type on. so since your a college student am guessing your going to to alot of typing.
the y500 has one issue though but not all of them, the track-pad starts to act up after few seconds of operating, the issue is fixed in models made prior to January 2012 so i`ve read but this issue is simply fixed by applying electric isolating tape underneath it.
I would recommend the y500 ( without the track-pad issue)
and since you mentioned you are a college student and your going to be using your laptop for almost everything I would also recommend the lenovo y580 and ASUS N56VZ-DH71 since the y500 and asus g75 has Intel integrated Intel graphics disabled which means their battery life would be relatively short 2 hours max, because the laptop will be working graphics on the gt650 or gtx660 full time, but in the lenovo y580, n56 counterparts the laptop will switch to HD4000 integrated graphics on the I7 to save power and it will give you a 40% more battery power, which would be very important your taking the lappy to take notes in lectures.
one last thing always consider a DVD rom/blue ray, just in case if you needed to borrow discs for the library or for renting movies. not necessary but you should consider it.
