I am looking at trying to go more portable for starters, but still want to be able to game on my laptop. Here is the laptop I have now:

Samsung Series 7 Gamer- Bought in July of 2012
17.3: 1920x1080 120Hz Display
Intel Core i7 3610QM 2.3GHZ Quad-Core 2.3GHz (3.3GHz Turbo-boost)
16GB Ram
2x 750GB HDD's
Nvidia GTX 675M 2GB
Windows 7 x64
Possible trade:
lenovo IdeaPad Y580- only about 3 days old, has invoice for proof.
15.6" 1920x1080 Display
Intel Core i7 3630QM 2.4GHz (3.4GHz- Turbo-Boost)
8GB Ram
Nvidia GTX 660M- Also supports Optimus for longer battery-life
2x 500GB HDD's (I believe, it's listed with 1TB so either there is a 1TB or 2x500GB, considering reviews mention 2 HDD's, I'm leaning towards that.)
Windows 8 x64

My biggest thing is, should I suck it up and deal with my large 17.3" or go Small? Is the performance a big enough difference? Probably the most demanding Games I would play right now are GTA IV, Just Cause 2, Metro 2033, Starcraft II, Borderlands 2. Though I mostly play games such as Torchlight 1 & 2, Command and Conquer 3, Sims 3, Dungeon Defenders.

Will I see any noticeable drops in performance? Or is this about as close as I'll get performance wise in a trade for a smaller laptop?

Oh, I forgot to mention, I just found out that I can downgrade to Windows 7 x64 if I need/ want to. Lenovo has Win 7 drivers for download.
They both have Blu-Ray drives. (Which is a plus for me.)
forgot to mention the Core i7 in the Lenovo is a Quad-core cpu. Looks to be a little better than the one i have in my current laptop. I was also wrong, the Lenovo does NOT have a second HDD, it's a single 1TB 5,400 RPM. On the positive side it is smaller, and lighter. Plus I read it gets better battery life from what I read. I understand that most likely if I want to downsize in laptop size, some performance hits may happen, wither with the gpu or cpu or maybe both.

Why am I suddenly getting disconnected from any multiplayer games?

Starting last friday July 27th, 2012 my computer will no longer connect to any type of multiplayer games at all. I can still search the internet, download and even talk on skype but when it comes to any type of multiplayer games i always seem to disconnect. I can connect to games but about a minute or two after im in a match I will get disconnected. This has been confirmed in League of legends, DayZ, and recently borderlands. All produce the same effect where i can join a match but then i get disconnected after. I did not change any settings when this started happening nor did i download anything. It just seemed to happen randomly. I thought at first it may be my internet/router causing this but when I took my comp. to a friends house the same thing occurred which leaves me to believe it is my own computer. I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop with Windows 7 and Intel i3 Core Processor. Please any feedback with what may be causing this and how to fix it would be appreciated. Thanks and message back if you need any more info.
I dont think its my internet please read what i wrote. I took my computer to my friends house who's internet is pretty good and it still did the same thing.

The next thing that is close to gaming alienware is the Dell XPS 15 X15L-1024ELS gaming laptop. This is a truly awesome computer. For starters, it's without a doubt the fastest laptop I have ever used. I can literally hit the button to turn it on and be online within 1 minute. It never lags or slows in performance, even when handling 5 or 6 tasks at a time. All of the features on this laptop are state-of-the-art. The speakers truly stand out, they are the best sounding laptop speakers I've ever heard, bar none. Also, the camera on it records in 1080p so you can get some really good quality video just using what comes stock. This is a solid machine that is well worth the price. I strongly suggest it to anyone looking for a state-of-the-art laptop.

That's a bit of a tough call, as $500 is the entry price for a gaming PC build, but does not include OS or monitor, so you still need to spend $200 more per system at least for OS and monitor. If that's ok, Google "best $500 gaming build". Recommended links are:

Looks like Amazon is selling them used for $1450. You'll have to sell for less than that because your return policy isn't quite as good as Amazon's, so people are more likely to buy from Amazon than from you. You might get $1200 if you're lucky.

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop.... it's hell to play Planetside 2, Call of Duty, Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 3, and pretty much any modern game. For my next upgrade, I want a computer that's not too much (preferably below $1000) money.
I would like to avoid building a computer, but if it's really all I can do for my price range I can get a friend to help me.
I know this price range isn't optimal but I figure there has to be something out there that's right for me. Again, not looking to completely max out the graphics, but just to be able to run the game from 30-60 FPS around medium settings.

My combo is an AMD FX-4100, EVGA GTX 560 SE, and 8GB 1600MHz RAM. The total build was $750 back in July 2012. It runs Skyrim maxed out with no lag. Planetside 2 runs maxed out without too much lag (definitely playable). Crysis 3 got about 50 FPS on all medium settings with anti aliasing. Crysis 2 had almost no lag at all maxed out. So get an FX-4300 with a GTX 650 Ti (BOOST if you can afford it, and 8GB RAM.

Dell XPS 15 (L521x) GPU Too Hot When Gaming - Decreased Performance - How Can I Cool It?

Hello,

I have a Dell XPS 15 (L521x) laptop. While gaming my GPU heats up to temperatures ranging from 73 to 77 degrees Celsius (NOTE: This is with a CM Storm SF-19 cooling pad).

My question is how else can I reduce this heat because I know as it gets hotter it throttles back to avoid crashing, thus decreasing performance.

Here are specs of everything:

Model - Dell XPS 15 (L521x)
OS- Windows 7 64-bit
CPU - Intel Core i7-3632QM
BIOS - A13 (Up to date)
SSD - 128GB (OS is on this, 30GB free)
HDD - 1TB (300GB free)
RAM - 16GB
GPU - Nvidia GT 640M

Drivers for EVERYTHING (including my graphics card) are up to date.

CM Storm SF-19 Gaming Laptop Cooling Pad with two 140mm Turbine Fans (1200-2600 RPM's, I always keep it at max blast)

Using software program, Open Hardware Monitor (and having my cooling pad on max blast), I have retrieved the following data:

~ My CPU idles around 60 degrees Celsius and can max around 70 degrees Celsius
~ My GPU idles around 44 degrees Celsius and can max around 77 degrees Celsius

My room temperature varies from 10-20 degrees Celsius (50-65 degrees Fahrenheit)

I had this laptop since July of 2012 and I had just had my motherboard swapped (GPU was integrated), heat sink re-seated, and cleaned of dust (wasn't really any in there). It was under warranty (and still is).

There aren't any problems with the fan and I've tried using Speed Fan to manually regulate fan speed but it can't detect my fan (I don't think it would matter anyway because the fan always properly adjusts to the demand of power and processing). I made my own power plan (using the "High Performance Plan" as a foundation) which makes my laptop at max performance (no power saving).

I always defragment both drives (SSD only when above 15% because I heard defragging a SSD is not good for its longevity) and I always perform disk cleanups, scans, etc. Essentially I try to keep everything clean, organized, and updated.

I have a lot of games on Steam and Origin that I play and most of the more graphic demanding games (such as Battlefield 3, even on minimum graphics) really heat up the GPU and as a result the performance decreases (and no it's not lag). Note: These games are not played from CD's.

I always leave my laptop plugged in (but not always on, mostly on sleep or shut down at night), any unnecessary background programs or services closed, and try to lower brightness and turn off LED key lights unless necessary.

I've looked everywhere for an answer but I still can't seem to find one.

I want to thank in advance those of you who fully read and provide any such answer to my problem.

I know a decent amount about software programs and hardware so don't be tempted to "baby" technical terms with me.

Lastly, please DO NOT comment on things (such as why I need 16GB of RAM) unless it contributes to answering my question.

Also, I know the cooling pad blows out air but does not suck in any and redirect it and my intake vent is in the front of the laptop and the exhaust vent is opposite (in the back). The pad definitely makes a difference but is there a way I can simply "suck out" the hot exhaust air and blow air into the intake? And I know the aluminum body does not help for reducing heat.

One more thing, please don't recommend me any software programs to download because I just don't like having them or relying on them.

turn it upside down & blow out the dust w/compressed air. delete unneeded programs, stop all unneeded background programs using the task manager. use ccleaner & advanced system care 6.0 free from http://www.cnet.com. finally use a fan cooling system under it., defrag the hhd.

Why does my whole computer seem to freeze up when I open Facebook?

I use dial up internet still I realize it is slow but it is beyond slow...

This is a letter I wrote to the techs at Netzero.com my ISP, their reply did not help at all. I have reset IE8, used Microsoft Fixit, and HP fixit to make sure all my drivers are up to date. I also use Windows update.

Okay, so this answer will solve your problem and it's really the only viable solution out there. But I will explain why you need it.

It is not your Internet that is causing problems, it's your computer. Recently, Facebook updated their source code and it causes a lot computers to lag and quite frequently, it uses up a lot of RAM. Their website is highly resource intensive (at least for a website, games still take more gusto). So there are two options you have, one I recommend, one I don't.

First option, is to add more RAM to your computer. This I do not recommend, as your computer is fairly old (pre-Vista), and it's almost pointless to add addition RAM to an older computer. If you do not how to do this, ask your local technical adviser.

The second option is to get a new computer entirely. Any computer or laptop you buy now will be MUCH faster than your current computer. This is because hardware has matured greatly over the past couple years and it greatly surpasses anything back in 2006. A high end computer in 2006 would barely compare to a low end laptop. This best option.
