Best Windows 8 Laptop?

Michael

I am looking to buy a Windows 8 laptop. My budget is $1800 but I prefer not to go that high and would like to stay in the $1500 range. I am going to be doing the regular things on my laptop along with gaming. Here is what I'm looking for in a new laptop:
- Intel i7 Processor
- 8 gb RAM
- Good graphics card (At least NVIDIA GT 640m, more is preferred and 2gb wouldn't hurt :))
- Stylish (I don't want a bulky computer, ultrabook is preferred if possible)
- Good Battery Life (About 4 hours is enough)
- For storage, 500 gb is more than enough

I had been looking at the Dell XPS 15 because it met all my specifications and it was very stylish even though it was a little pricey. However, I read many reports of people having problems so I'm not considering that anymore. Although, if these problems have been fixed by Dell, it would definitely be back in my list.

Answer
There are no gaming ultrabooks, because powerful GPUs like GT 640M cannot be cooled iside such a small chassis. If you want a midrange/high-end GPU with a regular core i7 you have to get a normal laptop.
Take a look at Sony Vaio S : http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&LBomId=8198552921666495150&categoryId=8198552921644768015
It has all your requirements, looks sleek and on top of it all has a full HD IPS screen !!, IPS screens are very hard to find in Windows laptops. And they look gorgeous.

Will a PC/Mac game work well a Windows 8 Laptop?

Lindsay

I'm wanting to get the Sims 3 and Sims 3 University Life expansion life and I don't want to order it and it get here and it not work and have to send it back. Will they still work with a laptop or do I need a desktop for the PC/Mac games? Here are the links to the game in case you need any information on the website I'm getting it from:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Sims-3-PC/dp/B00166N6SA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1390002438&sr=8-1&keywords=sims+3

http://www.amazon.com/The-Sims-3-University-Life-PCMac/dp/B00A39IEMY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1390002585&sr=8-2&keywords=sims+3+university+life+pc

And yes, I know I'm not very educated in the technology area. I'm sorry if I sound very dumb asking this. Thank you in advance for helping me. Also, will I need a wireless mouse?
My computer is a Toshiba. I got it 2012 for Christmas and it has Windows 8.

Answer
A "PC" game means a Windows game. You will find that a PC game works well on a Windows system and a Mac game works well on a Mac system. Each game's website shows the requirements for using it. Compare that with the specs of your computer / OS version and VOILA!!!!

As far as notebook compared with tower, it varies a lot, and there is a lot of over-lap, but usually a tower has more powerful graphics. That's the main hardware spec needed for most games (but you can't ignore processor, RAM, etc.).

The Sims isn't a real tax on the system of a computer (low requirements), so typically, any computer that runs Windows 8 well can also run Sims well. This includes Apple notebooks, since Windows 8 cannot be installed on any 2008 or older Mac. You haven't yet told what computer you own, so that's about all we can say.

EDIT :

No chat allowed on Yahoo Answers, so you would need to submit a new question if you have some additional questions. From the Amazon page....

"""Minimum Requirements:
OS: Windows Vista (SP1)/Windows XP (SP2)
Processor: Vista - 2.4 GHz P4 or equivalent/XP - 2.0 GHz P4 or equivalent
RAM: 1.5 GB
Disc Drive: 8x DVD ROM or faster
Hard Drive: 8 GB or more, with at least 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games.
Video Card: 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0. Supported video cards include: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900, FX 5950, 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800, 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950, 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800, 9600, 9800, GTX 260, GTX 280 (GeForce FX unsupported under Vista); ATI Radeon 9500, 9600, 9800, X300, X600, X700, X800, X850, X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950, 2400, 2600, 2900, 3450, 3650, 3850, 3870, 4850, 4870; Intel Extreme Graphics GMA X3x00 series.
Other: Laptop versions of chipsets above may work, but may run comparatively slower."""

Can I play a year 2000 game on a laptop with Windows 8?

Cheryl

I want this laptop:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/inspiron-15-6-laptop-4gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive/2132033.p?id=1219068848078&skuId=2132033&st=categoryid$pcmcat247400050000&cp=1&lp=5

And I want to play this game on it:
http://www.amazon.com/Pharaoh-Official-Expansion-Cleopatra-PC/dp/B00004TFLJ

Now, the laptop has Windows 8. The game is from 1999-2000, it is compatible with Windows 98. Could I play this game on this laptop?

Answer
No, but it would probably run on Linux using the Wine compatibility program. Or, PlayOnLinux, or Crossover. Many Linux distros will work on that Inspiron, and they won't drive you crazy like Windows 8.

Cheap windows 8 gaming laptop?

Townsend

What is the best cheap (under $700) windows 8 laptop that would be good for gaming but doesn't specifically have to be a gaming laptop?
I will be playing games like planet side 2, open world games, and games similar to COD

Answer
There doesn't exist a cheap laptop that will let you play Planetside 2, for that, you need a desktop, or really really expensive laptop, because that game is very CPU and GPU demanding.

Should I buy a new gaming laptop with Windows 8?

The

I'm thinking of buying this gaming laptop. It has all the great specs and everything, but in my head, i'm thinking of something. Windows 8. It all looked so nice until I noticed that. I've heard many things about Windows 8, will some games even run with the operating system? How about some help?

Answer
Windows 8 should run just about everything Windows 7 can. Biggest issue is getting all of your requirements for gaming, such as Directx and such.
I had windows 8 for a bit and it was a hassle to get everything installed right.
But once I got it running, it ran all of my games fine.

How to dual boot windows 8 to windows 7?

I just purchased a gaming laptop MSI g70, and it comes with windows 8, I would like to install a second OS ( windows 7). Can someone please point me to a guide or website that explains this in detail.

Answer
The first thing I have to say, is WHY? If you are going to use windows 7 anyway just reformat the craptastic windows 8 and install a clean fully working windows 7.

Ok, now that Ive got my hatred of windows 8 off my chest, here is a link to a tutorial that will show you how do do it.

best gaming laptops windows 8 image

Narwhalsar

I'm on a basic non gaming laptop (windows 8, 2012-2013ish)..
Are there any good games you can suggest?
Well I have 4 gigs of RAM and it has Intel Pentium.. I really don't know what stats would helpp.. I'm a noob
and it's 64 bit

Answer
By just knowing the OS and the date I really know nothing, but I'll try.
Excellent games than can be played on middle-of-the-road or lower computers

Terraria (Available on steam)
Team Fortress 2 (Free to play on steam)
Portal/Portal 2 and Half Life 2 are fun, (though rather short) single player games.
Skyrim is incredibly fun, can be played on low graphics on most computers.

What is the best laptop I can get for under 1500$?

Mark

I hate macs and want to avoid windows 8 if possible. I was thinking about maybe getting a gaming laptop, but it's my primary goal to get a computer for college, which I begin my first year soon.

I know that is a very picky list of wants but if you can think of anything it would be a great help.

Answer
You can get a pure gaming laptop under $1500 but I would not recommend you to go for. As you want a laptop for other tasks of schools than it is better to go for other multitasking good laptop in this price range.

I will recommend a laptop from ASUS which has the price of under $1500. Also it has really good features which are perfect for different tasks. Its features include:

It has Intel Core i7-3517U 1.9 GHz for fast working
It has 4 GB DDR3
500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive with 128 GB Solid-State Drive
13.3-Inch Screen with Intel GMA HD which is portable and perfect for students
Windows 8 because most of the latest laptops has it.

The above features are perfect for a good laptop. Alongside this, it is very good in its performance as well for that you'll be interested on this actual user review, talking about actual good performance on this laptop:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R3F28OYXN5WUM8/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B009F1J4QQ&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=daieom-20

So a perfect laptop for perfect performance makes it a good choice to go for. But I would like you to see other options as well to broaden your choices. See the list here for most popular laptops under $1500, those on the top of the list are normally good offers:

What are some good free programs, games, and apps for windows 8?

Dan

I recently got a new laptop with windows 8 on it and was wondering if there are any good starter programs that maybe recommended.
As for apps I am not talking about the apps in the app store.

Answer
Are you new to windows?
Firefox or google chrome for a browser instead of internet explorer--nobody uses IE, ever. It just sucks and everybody hates it. (Opera or safari would be my 2nd choice)
Office 2013 for word processing, spreadsheets, and powerpoint presentations. (This isn't free, but a lot better than the supposed "free version" open office. If you don't want to pay for this, try downloading it.)
K-Lite Codec Pack for playing any video file.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm
iTunes for music.
Skype. If you video chat a lot.
Paint (already included) to edit pictures.
