Is this an alright gaming laptop?

Casey Mcco

Hi i'm thinking of a getting a laptop and I just wanted to know if this would be a decent one to get. I am mostly going to be using it for school but I would also want to be able to use it to play video games. I won't be playing games that require high specs only ones such as Mass Effect 3 and Borderlands 2. As long as it can play games like this in a good way such as no lag and decent graphics then I will most likely buy it. I will award 10 points to the best answer. Also please don't mention getting a desktop as I will need to take it to class. Thanks

Answer
There is no such thing as a good gaming laptop. They over heat, they aren't upgradeable, and they take tons of abuse when gaming. Just because a manufacture claims it's a gamer, it isn't close to a good game rig.

Angus

I want to make a Gaming PC for $2500. It must have a Nvidea 570, 580 or 590, must have a good looking chassies, a motherboard that can support 2 of the above GPU's (I plan to upgrade), a SSD boot drive, a 1-2TB hard drive and wireless. I need to be able to connect it to a TV so HDMI is a must. But if I can buy one that fits these specs can you please tell me. Also what is the best gaming laptop for this price (That looks good). Answer
Oh yea. That laptop meets every games standard that is on the market right now. The price is way crazy though. You could get a system with much better hardware for cheaper if you built your own desktop. You can easily look up tutorials on how to build a desktop, than simply go to wholesale websites like geeks.com newegg.com frys.com or ebay for computer parts. Trust me. Laptops overheat like crazy, so no matter how nice it is. It will not last as long as the average desktop and may under-perform due to crap air flow. Other than that its actually quite nice.

Laptop Query - University + Gamings?

carryonrav

Hey guys, I'm looking at buying this laptop [external link] for university next year [and a bit of gaming on the side]

http://www.justlaptops.net.nz/product/180/sony-cs-p8600-4g-320g-gef9-wifi-n-14-led-win7-pack/?search=SONY+CS+P8600

I was wondering if that would run Aion [and other games of that calibre] smoothly. Any response would be greatly appreciated. :D

For those not wanting to click on the link, here are the stats for the laptop:

* Intel Centrino 2, Core 2 Duo P8600 @ 2x 2.4GHz
* 4GB Duo Channel DDR2 800MHz RAM
* 320 GB High speed SATA 5400 rpm
* nVidia GeForce9300GS with 1.5G Video RAM / 256MB Dedicated
Cheers for the heads-up Allen, I'm looking for more or less a replacement for my desktop at home, as I will be moving out and that'll be my sole computer. That battery issue sounds like a bit of a problem though hmm

Answer
This isn't a answer, but rather advice. Gaming laptops run out of battery very quickly and it would suck if you needed to take notes or email an assignment but your battery was dead.

What type of Laptop should I get?

The

Im thinking Lenovo because they are having deals right now.

I want a pretty decent upgradable-some-day laptop, that right now is still pretty decent, enough to allow fast graphics for occasional light gameplay (not world of warcraft graphics, but less), and be easy to run a bit of tasks at a time.

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/landingpage/promotions/ideapad/weekly-sale/

I am looking to pay under 550 if possible, are any of these laptops worth the price tag?

Answer
Get a desktop machine if you want it for gaming and slight upgrades and gaming for laptops chews up the battery life and many people i know says gaming sucks on laptops so invest in a good desktop

Is this a good gaming laptop?

Honos

Okay so I am about to buy this laptop
http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=384990
for Uni study but will also want to play games on it. I know it is not up to alienware standards but from what I know about computers this will run very good games will it not? So I really want to know; What games can this run that are currently out (Crysis, Fallout3, Farcry2, Mass Effect2) and what detail levels (Eg above average, below average)
Also how long am I looking at before this is outdated (Can't run good games) 2-3 years? Or 6-12 months?
Lastly it doesn't say anywhere but you guys might know. Does it come with Windows 7 64 bit or 32 bit?

Many thanks Honos

Answer
For the Windows question, unless specified assume it's 32-bit, because that is the standard speed, in this case the processor native speed is 64 specified by the Intel website. While it has 4 GB's of RAM, which is a good deal that will last you some time, the processor is not that great. 1.6 GHz will show some lack when trying to run modern games. Also, you should note that the graphics card is so so. While it is 1024mb its not top of the line but it should do alright. You may be able to play Crysis but I wouldn't bother, the specs on this won't do it any justice, and to be honest I really don't know what it would look like so I would pass on that. Fallout is graphically intense, and while it should run it will def. be on low settings IMO, medium at best. Same for Far Cry. I don't know the suggested stats on Mass Effect 2, but Mass Effect 1 should run fine on it. In my opinion this is a surprisingly expensive Laptop and I feel like there may be better options for you money. While it does have a huge hard drive, I don't believe that that is necessary, and I'd rather chop that in half, in a quarter, and go the high speed external route just to keep the clutter off the portable laptop. A large hard drive like that will take forever to defragment.

With this computer you should be able to run with some success new games most likely for the next year or so. The processor worries me, but other than that it should be acceptable. This will probably be able to play games longer than that but you may begin to run into problems, and I'm not about to guess what kind of requirements games will have any further than a year.

Can you use a wireless USB adapter with the PlayStation 2?

best gaming laptops nz image

trigam41

I have a wireless network. I don't have a network adapter for my PlayStation 2, but there are USB ports on the front. Is there any way to use a wireless USB adapter [Linksys]?

Answer
I could make it a long answer but it doesn't need to be.

The answer is NO.

The USB of the PS2 is NOT connected to the internal ethernet controller so it is IMPOSSIBLE to hook it up to work this way. If you want wireless you can go with a Wireless Bridge OR use Cross CAT5 cables and a laptop that is on a wireless system.

Here is a nice OFFICIAL page from Playstation on the topic:

Will these specs be enough for 3d rendering projects?

http://www.asus.co.nz/Notebooks/Versatile_Performance/K43SV/#specifications

I'm still a beginner so I plan to start small. If I enjoy doing 3d rendering that's when I'll decide on getting a desktop pc but for now I want to tinker with different 3d rendering software first.
But aren't the specs good enough for light work?

Answer
Laptops aren't meant for 3D rendering, you'll need a desktop, Laptops are only meant for Watching movies, surfing the internet, etc., but not 3D Rendering and also not for Gaming.

Is there a way for me to play sims 3 without a disk?

We've recently had some earthquakes (I live in chch NZ :L) and my laptop was sitting on a table when we had one, it fell off.. Luckily nothing was broken except the disk drive. But now i can't play the sims 3 because my computer won't recognise that there is a disk. Is there anyway for me to play the sims off my laptop without using the disk? Thanks (:

Answer
Either buy the game on steam or get a new disk drive (you can get an external one and it will work out fine).

Anyone know where in New Zealand I can get a good laptop for cheap?

Answer
Go onto pricespy:

www.pricespy.co.nz

Just type what brand/laptop you want and it will compare all the different retail outlets that sell them, then you can pick the cheapest and find the nearest store, or buy online and then go pick it up.

It's really good, I buy all my xbox and pc games through pricespy.

How long is a flight from Los Angeles to London?

lotsofques

Also, what do you do to pass the time on a flight that long?

Answer
Non-stop flight time from Los Angeles Int'l airport (LAX) to London Heathrow airport (LHR) will varies from 10h 10min to 10h 40min depending on your choice of airlines.

British Airways has the fastest flight time with 10h 10min on board their daily flight BA268. Their second daily flight BA282 has a flight time of 10h 15min.

Virgin Atlantic has 2 daily non-stop flights with a flight time of 10h 25min on VS24 and 10h 30min on VS8.

American Airlines daily flight AA136 has a flight time of 10h 20min and United Airlines offers a daily flight on UA934 with a flight time of 10h 33min.

Air New Zealand has a daily flight NZ 2 with a flight time of 10h 40min.

To pass the time, I watch movies (either the ones on airline's entertainment system or on my laptop), listen to music, play games, read books & magazines, sleep and eating.

So i just need help trying to find a good gaming laptop which could run Battlefield 4 on medium-high settings (Maybe the resolution can go down). But there is a limit where I can only spend about $1000-$1500 NZ. I might limit to $2000. Thanks.

Answer
Check out Asus's new line of laptops. I'm currently looking at the G750JH, it costs $2500 but it is well worth it since it comes standard with an SSD, GTX780 and 24 gigs of ram.

What laptops are good for gaming and are cheap?
