What is the minimum recommended configuration for a good gaming laptop?

Want to buy a laptop for downloading music, movies, editing movies, skype, email and gaming.
What is the recommended configuration to be able to play the recent titles and that will still be a good machine in the next three years?
I am sensitive to price as well.

Get a desktop. I bought a laptop for gaming and was very disappointed despite it's spec. Laptops normally have integrated gfx instead of an independant (powerful) gfx card. Laptops tend to come with about 1.6ghz duo's. You really need to be verging on the 2.0ghz duo or higher mark.

Aim for:

2.0ghz duo +
2gb ram +
Decent gfx 512mb +

That will play some, not all. (on low-medium)

Toshiba laptop dieing?

I have a Toshiba laptop ( http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/retail-product.jsp?poid=456089 ) and lately it's been acting up. It was running pretty good for the year I had it (bought it in November 2009) so I've had it for a year and 2 months. I believe there's only a year warranty on it... but I'll have to check. Anyways, it has like, these moments where it fails to load anything, freezes, changes the way to page looks, and rarely can load youtube, facebook, or really any page at all... I also play this game that has never given me any problems before (besides horrible lag at times which is caused by my laptop not being compatible for it >.< ) and all of a sudden, it will be on the verge of crashing, constantly freezing...
And it gets extremely hot on the bottom, even though the vents are not being blocked. And it sometimes just shuts down and dies, and I have to wait for a bit to reload it :l AND it started making some weird noises like it's trying to load something but is failing...

Is it dieing do you think? Time to get a new laptop/pc? Or could the graphics card thing be going out? I'm really not good with this computer/laptop stuff, so I have no idea what it could be. I also did scans to make sure it wasn't a virus or anything, and everything came clean.

my guess: you got a worm, or a virus thats undetected or has done damage
also, an intel celeron is very crappy. i really suggest getting a PC for gaming as they are upgradeble compared to laptops which all laptops are integrated.

the type of gaming laptop or desktop really depends on what games you wana play.
for stuff like Call of Duty: Black Ops on Really high graphics youd want an computer for about a 1000 or 2000 but stuff like CoD4 on medium to low get like an HP Slimeline. again depends really

Screeching noise in laptop?

My laptop, I got it last year for christmas, but it's older than a year, I know that. It screeches when I play music or videos, not when I start them though, it screeches in the middle or the video or song and freezes and I have to turn it off. The computer also has a problem with overheating, but it's usually fixed by putting it in front of a fan when in use. Anyways, I was okay with it, but then I installed a computer game. The installation when great, it only overheated once since I forgot to put it in front of a fan. I got the installation all set up and clicked play on the game. It went on for five minutes, loading. Then out of no where, it started screeching, gave me a heart attack. I had to turn the computer off. Can anyone tell me what the noise is and how to stop it? Pleases and thank yous.

The HDD is on the verge of being kaput. You better start backing up your files, and replace with a new HDD.

Better yet, have an expert check the whole laptop so you can know what else is deteriorating since the laptop is older.

When im playing a game why does my laptop crackle, freeze then beep?

I was playing sims 3, editing a sim, on my laptop (vaio VGN-NR11S) when i heard a loud crackling sound. Then my laptop froze and carried on crackling, about a minuet later there was a loud short 'beep' and my laptop completely froze! i turned if off then back on and it was fine on the internet,it has done this once before.. but before any of this happened it seemed to be playing just fine, it just happened playing sims? is their a reason for this and how can i solve it? thanks

I'd guess this is either a HDD or GPU failure, similar thing happened to my desktop when my HDD was on the verge of dieing. I'd advise you take your laptop to a repairman if you still have the warranty on.

My laptop is very laggy suddenly?

I have a Asus gaming laptop with
8 GB of RAM
1 Terra byte of hard drive
2GB GTX 560 Video card
Intel i7 Processor

So one day my FPS suddenly dropped to about 15 while playing TF2, I usually get 80+
It has stayed there for a while and I'm not sure why. My CPU usage is between 30-60% while playing now(not sure what it was before) and I have a Turbo Boost icon and it is saying I'm getting 0 GHz.

I don't know what to do hope you can help
I have Windows 7
It is 5 months old
My GPU Temp is between 35-40 degrees while playing

The possibilities are endless.

- GPU is about to die or is on the verge of taking a dump on you
- Windows finally has corrupted the registry
- Windows sadly sucks unless it W7 which is more or less descent but Vista is horrible
- You may need to re-apply solvent to the CPU as it may be getting overheated but since its video we are talking about I would look into the GPU
- There may be dust on the inside of you're computer causing to operate like crap (I do monthly cleanups on my machines from laptops to desktops as dust gets into them one way or another)

Ok, for a gaming rig, i advise you get a desktop.

A laptop will only play the latest and greatest games for about the next year or 2 if you're lucky.

DirectX10 is on the verge of debuting "nextGen" games, so next year, your laptop will not be able to play games very well.

But, if you must...

You will need AT LEAST!!!:
the Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz processor
Vista Home PREMIUM - (basic wont play much)
2 GB of high frequency RAM
the ATI X1900 video accelerator

That ups the price quite a bit.

Gaming laptop for 1000$?

Hey, guys so i am looking to upgrade my laptop since there were some games on steam that ive really been wanting to play for a while and i bought 2~3 games on sale. The problem is i cant play them at all. My computer is way too old and cant hand minecraft or league of legends, and those are really non intensive games. Anyways i have a low budget of 1000$~, Please keep it as close to 1000$ as you possibly can. I have heard good things about lenovo,Asus and MSI. If you were to get me one of these brands ill be even happier, but the problem is im not sure if they are good brands, so please stick to whatever you think will be the best bang for my buck. The main games im playing right now are minecraft, league of legends and i do want to be able to play Bf4 when it comes out and some other games that will come out. If you really can not find a laptop that will run these games in medium~high settings try a little bit higher but only if it is really worth it. Thanks a lot guys i appreciate it.
Ps. I am going to get a lot of hate for trying to game on a laptop so let me get it straight. I need it to be mobile because i use it for school. So i absolutley can not get a desktop since i need to take notes in class with my laptop. Again thanks for everything

You know i'm referring you to lenovo. In my personal opinion they are the best out there. I have owned dell, acer, hp and lenovo. By far lenovo is the best out there. You have the right idea and have heard the right things about lenovo. They are a magnificent brand. Lenovo has what you need, the y510p it's an excellent machine, ( http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y510p/ ) i would reccomend it over any other brand. I know it is $999.00 right on the verge of $1,000 but i think it is worth the extra doe $$$$. I've been trained in traditional art and I'm very comfortable with it, however I want to expand my horizons and try something new. I recently got into digital painting. I always felt a bit jealous over all those digital artworks on deviantart, I want to paint like them! Especially since I'm going into game design and graphic design. One little problem is that... when I try to paint on my computer on photoshop, I have great difficulty controlling the mouse, I keep making crooked lines and stick people and it's really irritating me. I've been so used to hand drawing everything and when I try to use mouse to paint I am on the verge of throwing my laptop out the window. please help, what should I do :c.

1) Wireless card is too far away from router.
2) If wired, might be too many connections overwhelming the router.
3) If DSL, the RJ11 cable that runs from a jack to the router is too long.
4) The hotel is too far away from the central office to get proper speeds which gives high pings.
5) The modem could be on the verge of failing.
6) The router could be on the verge of failing.
7) You've got spyware on your computer causing issues with speed.

I currently have a Dell Studio, which I've only had for about 3 years. It's on the verge of dying and doesn't function well enough on a regular basis. In other words, please don't recommend a Dell, I won't be buying any more from that brand.
I use my laptop for school and need it to function in classes instead of struggling to convince the mouse pad to recognize that my finger is trying to move the cursor.
I would like something between 15 and 17 inches. I also need something with the port that allows you to connect to a projector. I've forgotten what the exact port is called, but it's shaped like a trapezoid and has a bunch of small dots/holes in it.
The lighter the laptop, the better, because I have to carry it around campus with me. I need a laptop with longevity. My nearly 9 year old HP that I gave to my mom functions better than the Dell I've had for a 3rd of the time.
I'd like to spend less that $700 which is where the difficulty comes in.
If you have any recommendations that fit these specifications, it would help a lot! I'm not very knowledgeable about computers and need recommendations from someone who really knows what they're talking about. I don't want to just hope that a computer is good - if I'm spending money on it, I really need it last and have a reasonable amount of speed. My own research hasn't done much but find a bunch of mixed reviews that leave me more confused than convinced one way or another to buy the computer.

let me start o b saying that shopping according to make could result in buying a crap laptop as there are crap dells and sony vaios. i have tried many brands in the past and they have all been quite reliable but dell was the worst although it functioned well the build quality was just crap. anyway i currently have an acer and although people say they are cheap quality and there crap i disagree as it is fast enough and does what i need.
the reason make doesnt matter is because in reality makes such as dell,acer,hp etc buy the same computer parts but assemble it in a pretty case and some will overcharge for it. for your next laptop i would just buy according to spec as then you can never go wrong as ive been doing that. i bought a sony vaio in 2001 and it was good but my friend had brought a cheae make laptop that had better performance then mine and costed less which is why buying by make is not a good idea.
your budget seems quite healthy and heres what i reccomend for different needs:
for cpu:
1)intel celeron/pentium-good for normal everyday use uch as office and using the web. pentium does have the beter performance and worth it if u can afford it.
2)intel core i3-great for a budget level gaming processor or even better for normal everyday use
3)intel core i5-very powerful processor which is ideal for video editing and gaming
4)intel core i7-most powerful processor but pricy only worth it if ur gonna be doing and i mean intensive multitasking and if ur professional video editior or hardcore gamer

for ram:(more ram wont make a comuter faster unless u use msot of it)
1)4gb ram-more then enough for normal everyday use
2)4gb to 6gb-more then enough for gaming but 6gb would prob be better as in the future games may require more then 4gb and some games require around 2.5gb
3)6gb to 12gb-ideal for video editing but over 8gb is usually a overkill unless ur a professional

for hard drive space usually 500gb is more then enough but if ur gonna be gaming alot then maybe 750gb

u only need a dedicated graphics for video editing or gaming and i recomend 1gb dedicated or 512mb for light gaming but games such as minecraft/sims 3 can work any new computer

i have been trying out yugioh and i think i have found out that yugioh is math.becuase of the life points and attack and defence points. cuz in most parts of yugioh you have to do math for the life points and stuff and because they're 4 digit numbers so i think yugioh is good for young kids but i would like yahoo answers opintion about this

Yes, I love the card game and the anime. I needed some help in Immunology class in Spring 2008 along with studying with classmates. I was on the verge of getting a C that semester and that's when I decided to let Yugioh help. I started making Yugioh cards (the card names and effect, no drawings) that related to Immunology. I tried to relate their card effects as much as possible to the real white blood cells' abilities in the body. This actually helped out a lot, so I ended up getting a B for the semester instead of a C. I told friend and professors what I was able to do and they were shocked. So yeah, this is where Yugioh came in handy the best for me. It sucks that I lost most of the cards I made up on my old laptop when it got messed up, but I'm trying to make them again. This time I'm making them be special summoned from everywhere like deck, hand, graveyard, and removed from play.

I hope this really enlightened you in playing the game.
