I am looking for a good gaming laptop and I was also wondering what would be the best screen size. Also, i was wondering what external/portable hard drive i should get (if any).

Answer
Depends on what kind of games you're going to play. Most laptops come with the newest series of GPUs from Nvidia or ATi and with 2GB of RAM, you should be able to play most games. For $1500, you're not gonna get too much gaming power, try to see what you can get from AlienWare if you're a serious gamer. PCs deliver more performance though, because the GPUs on laptops are designed to be smaller and consume less power, so it has lower quality than a full blown PCI-E card.

I am in the market for a gaming laptop for a semi-serious gamer. I am looking to play games such as Battlefield 2 on medium quality settings and Oblivion. I have looked into several of the graphics cards that come integrated and dedicated in laptops. I know that the possibility of upgradable graphic card upgrades in laptops is still a few years away. I am looking for a laptop with graphics that can handle the games I listed. I don't need any of that Vista crap neither. It's too early to upgrade OS. Sites providing customizible builds are welcome and any user feedback from customers who bought from mainstream stores like Bestbuy, Circuit City, Dell, etc is welcome to.

Answer
Well, you should really buy directly from a company. You can always personalze your own laptop on campaq's website as well as Dell and HP.

Do you think 16gb of ram too much for a laptop?

I recently got a new hp dv6-6195ca laptop an it has 8gb of ram, Do you think 16gb of ram too much.
I do play games on it
AND what are the benefits of having 16gb.
Oh and the max memory is up-gradable to 16gb so don't worry about that

Answer
There is never to much ram. Ram that is not accessable to the operating system may be useless (unless used by something else like a ramdrive) but it won't do any harm either. 64 bit windows can however access 16Gb of memory so better to have it then to not have it.

One practical use of having 16Gb instead of 8Gb might be the almost total elimination of the need to use the swapfile, and minimizing the need to reload applications more then 1 time, increasing the lifespan of the hdd and making the computer run an smoothly as possible.

Turning of virtuall memory may not be a good idea though:

What computer would be best for me?

Olivia

I'm a bit of a gamer, I remix music and make short films. I have an HP laptop that in December I would have had for four years, and it's not workin very good anymore. It's really slow at everything and when I try to play music out loud, it can barely play for ten seconds without skipping. Can someone help me find a new laptop suitable for everything I do? If not, can someone help me get my computer back to working like it used to?

Answer
Just yahoo for "best laptops" and look for some reviews after first thinking about what you want and what your budget is.

Some important topics are:

batterylife: if you need to use the laptop on the go then batterylife is of course extremely important. if you want to use the laptop on the go i'd go for at least 7 hours of batterylife.

buildquality: i for instance don't like laptops that get hot. often reviews wil tell something about the build-quality and if for instance the laptop gets hot when under load.

screensize and quality: a bigger screen means often less batterylife, so if batterylife is important choose a bit smaller screen but with good resolution. also the brightness is very important, especially when using the laptop in brightly lit rooms. Another issue might be reflections.

touchscreen: a touchscreen is a big plus when using windows 8, but it costs.

tablet or hybrid: maybe a tablet or hybrid (with removable screen that can act as tablet) can be a good choice, especially is mobility is important.

performance: often the better the performance the worse the batterylife. a good mix between performance and batterylife might be an i5 plus hd 4000 integrated graphics with 4-6 Gb of memory. An ssd wil make booting a lot faster also.

this is just 1 site that can help you choose:

If you want a powerfull machine and don't care that much about mobility then this might be a good choice:

I am currently looking for a gaming laptop that would be able to play any games on the highest possible settings given while maintaining a high fps. I dont really care if it can play high def or anything i am just interested in its abilities to keep up with all the games on the market. If possible i would like a laptop that is not too bulky but that is not a big issue. Also it would be awesome if someone could list a couple options for me along with the prices for each laptop and their respective specs. thx

Answer
The major brands that carry the top notch laptops are....

ASUS (G74gx series)
MSI (G series, the best is the 780 i believe)
-These two provide the best bang for your buck and the best laptops of those series will play anything on full, BF3, Skyrim you name it.....

Some others are....
Sager/Clevo (which really is a laptop, but its more like a portable desktop with full size CPU's, they are bulky but are ridiculously powerful)
Alienware (i say this only because they have some up to date laptops, most of which cost 3x more than they should, and if you buy one of these people who game will laugh at you. its like buying a lambo for a bugatti price... seriously alienware are overpriced pieces of shit)

Just make sure it comes with a new generation Intel i7 quad core CPU, a 560-580M nvidia gtx card.

The ASUS and MSI's go from 1200-2400 depending on the model
Sager/Clevo is generally 2500+
Alienware sucks

Most of these laptops are at least 17.3" or bigger, so your gonna be buying bulky laptops... the Sager/Clevo's are ginormous as well.

Overall i'd reccomend the ASUS, reliable and not to flashy...

Good Luck, I Personally own a g72gx from ASUS and its great!

EDIT***: not to hate, but please don't listen to the guy below me... i have studied computers and laptop hardware for years, and seriously Alienware's are for little kids who don't know anythign about computers. They'll get your less FPS then a highend ASUS or MSI and cost a shit ton more. Fanboys everywhere beware....

I CANNOT WARN YOU ENOUGH AGAINST ALIENWARE... THEY ARE GARBAGE.... please do not buy one.

What is a great gaming laptop that gives you the best bang for your Buck?
