jamezz212

I've been searching for a while now for a gaming laptop in the price range of 2000-3000 US dollars with at least the option to have a 4 year parts/labor warranty on it. I have looked at Ibuypower and Alienware but both look a little less than optimal on repairs and warranties. Any suggestions?

Answer
Try dell xps laptops. They are much cheaper than2000-3000 dollars but have the option for a great 4 year warranty.

What are some good gaming laptop companies, that are not mainstream like alienware or xps?

sangheilie

I'm looking for a new gaming laptop, i have an alienware but i wanna look at some different off the radar companies. Anyone know any good companies that sell gaming laptops, especially ones with 15" screens or laptops under $1000? I already know about Sager, all other company suggestions are cool.

Answer
First off, Alienware aren't that mainstream. I like Overdrive PC and Maingear, although they are rather botique.

I use windows 7 on toshiba lap.

Answer
you can search google for a gadget that shows battery and time left if time doesnt appear when you click on your battery icon in taskbar

let me tell you something, time left depends on your acts, if time shows 2 hours for example while led brightness is low, then suddenly you changed led to high brightness and start music with a 3d game plus downloading file from internet then believe me battery will not stay more that 20 minutes!!!!!!!!

but if you dont do that then time will be correct (not very accurate but some how in range)

if you need more help about batteries and power contact me at maxyoshida@rocketmail.com

What is Steam Punk and how can I get into it?

Ajrah

I have been intrigued in the style of Steam Punk, but other than just normal web searching and such, I don't really know what its about or how I can get into it. Please help?

Answer
Steampunk is sort of mashup of sci-fi and 19th century technology, such as the steam engine and elaborate clockwork mechanisms.

For instance, if you had to build a computer, but were living in 1880, what would it look like? It'd probably look like a huge pipe organ, with more flywheels and belts, for instance.

It's not really it's own genre per se.

If you ever watched the Back To The Future movies, and recall Doc's flying locomotive time machine - that's an example of steampunk, however the movies themselves aren't considered steampunk.

Steampunk has actually been around longer than the actual term has existed. The old TV shows, Wild Wild West (which is what the movie was based on) and The Adventures of County Briscoe Jr. are steampunk. The stories of Jules Verne are the very definition of steampunk. Comics like Girl Genius (read it online for free!) are steampunk. Anime series often have some steampunk elements in them. "Steam Detectives", "Sakura Wars", and "Nadia" come to mind immediately.

If you're into pen&paper RPGs, some systems, like GURPS have some steampunk modules you can look into. Wikipedia has a list of video games that have steampunk elements to them.

People have made some steampunk-inspired projects, such as a steampunk style "laptop" made from an old typewriter keyboard, and a handmade case made of solid oak. Of course, weighing in at over 100 pounds, it wasn't really that portable... Pretty, though.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "get into" steampunk. It's not like a lifestyle or anything - like being goth. At best it's a small sub-genre within the sci-fi/fantasy realm. I have heard of people cosplaying in the steampunk style, which basically involves dressing in 19th century style clothing, maybe with a gadget or something thrown in for good measure. However, short of building your own steam-powered mecha suit (anime is full of these) it's sort of a hard look to pull off convincingly.

I have a pretty new Sony Vaio (F series). It's got decent specs, but not quite good enough to run games like Battlefield 3 on the specs I want. I've built desktops and had extensive experience with that, but never much with laptop hardware. Is it difficult, or even possible to upgrade processor and/or graphics card in a laptop?

Answer
It is possible to upgrade the processor but it's NOT possible to upgrade the graphics card. The graphics card is built in on the motherboard. The processor in some laptops is easy and in some it's hard. In most laptops it's under the keyboard.

How do you upgrade laptop hardware?

Someguy047

Considering getting a gaming laptop, but would like to be able to upgrade it.

Answer
You can upgrade the hard drive, the optical drive and add ram. You might find a useful PCMCIA card- perhaps one that has a serial port. That's about it. You will not change the CPU. Maybe there's an overclocking hack, but it will shorten the CPU life with extra heat.

I have a VAIO laptop model VPCEE33FX. I was wondering if i can change its graphics card instead of buying a gaming laptop. If this is possible, where can i buy one and what other components, if any, do i need (adapters, boards, etc)?

Answer
Not possible. Laptops, except very high-end boutique models, CANNOT have video upgraded. Even if they can, such cards are in VERY limited supply and do NOT have the latest and greatest available, and are VERY expensive (3-4x regular video card costs).

The Notori

Im looking for the cheapest price, wont mind online, although id prefer it in store.

I want either the G51 or G72, or maybe you could recommend me another gaming laptop?

Answer
Gaming... if you really want to game, look for a core2quad or preferably an Core i7 or i5.

The core i7 & i5 are built to provide more processing power to a single core when running programs that don't make use of multiple cores - therefore running much faster. They call it Turbo Mode.

You might consider this: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dndotw2&cs=19&dgvcode=ss&c=US&l=EN&vw=list&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=566643&acd=10495476-1547706-
and go for the i5-520M processor upgrade.

Hope this helps.

What is a reasonably priced gaming laptop?

Joshua of

My old laptop reaching the end of its life and I am due for a new laptop, and I'd like a gaming laptop (as that is what I do mostly on my laptop now).
I am looking for a reasonably priced one it possible; I do know gaming laptops are more pricy that most. I'd prefer to not spend more than $1500 on one, but if need be I am willing. If you know f a good one cheaper than that that's better!
Thanks in advanced!

Answer
These are all good options:

**Lenovo IdeaPad Y580** (i7-3610QM, NVIDIA GTX 660M, 15.6" 1920x1080 glossy display) - **$949 + tax**

- These models come with the 1920x1080 display. There are other models that come instead with a 1366x768 display, but those models are not recommended unless you need the larger text. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to have very poor image quality due to low contrast.
- Click the green "Activate eCoupon" button in the cart.
- Note: the GTX 660M is not significantly faster than the GT 650M.

**MSI GE60** (i7-3610QM, NVIDIA GT 650M, 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display) - **$1099 no tax**

- Select Windows 7 under Operating System if you cannot acquire your own copy for cheaper.
- Recommended: Matte display option.
- Note: the GTX 660M is not significantly faster than the GT 650M.

**Sager NP9130** (i5-3210M, NVIDIA GTX 670M, 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display) - **$1095 no tax**
- http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9130-clevo-p151em1-p-4340.html?wconfigure=yes
- Select Windows 7 under Operating System if you cannot acquire your own copy for cheaper.
- Downgrade the memory to 8GB 1333MHz, unless you have a particular need for 8GB 1600MHz memory. (Only available on XoticPC configuration page).

**Sager NP9150** (i7-3610QM, NVIDIA GTX 675M, 15.6" 1920x1080 glossy display) - **$1405 no tax** (w/ GTX 670M: $1308)

- Take note of the GPU options, and note that the stock GTX 670M is available in the cheaper NP9130.
- Recommended: Matte display option.
- Downgrade the memory to 8GB 1333MHz, unless you have a particular need for 8GB 1600MHz memory.
- Note: comes with a colored backlit keyboard unlike the NP9130.
- 17.3" version: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9170-gaming-laptop-clevo-p170em-p-4342.html?wconfigure=yes

------------------------------

Note: Another answer here recommended the "ASUS N56VZ-ES71". This model is not a good option, because it comes with a 15.6" 1366x768 display. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to have very poor image quality due to low contrast. It also has the slower GDDR3 version of the GT 650M instead of the GDDR5 version, but it's still a decent GPU.

The N56VZ is a good option if you buy the N56VZ-RB71 which comes with a 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display, but the N56VZ-ES71 is a bad option.

Where should I buy a cheap computer?

best gaming laptop value 2012 on Gaming PC - Buy or Build Your Perfect PC | PCMag.com
best gaming laptop value 2012 image

oogabooga3

We need a new desktop. I want something up to date and reliable which is good for checking email, paying bills, downloading videos and is inexpensive. We don't need it for video games or anything really fast like that. Where is the best place to buy a cheap computer?

Answer
First question is how cheap?
There are used PCs as both laptops and desktops on Craigslist and Goodwill stores for under $100.
They are not up to date and not necessarily reliable, but they function, and that is cheap.

The second is about your monitor-display, or are you using a TV that hopefully is higher resolution than x768. 720p TVs cause display issues in WIndows 8. Most computers today do not include the monitor, but do include a keyboard and mouse, and may or may not include USB speakers.

Third question is whether you go ethernet connected by cable, or do you need wireless. Some computers include wireless. Others need an added PCI card or USB stick.

Fourth question is form factor. There are towers called desktops in various sizes and go down to slimline and bookshelf and mini's. Often, you get better performance out of a low priced laptop, especially if including a display, and the laptops usually have HDMI outputs and can accept inexpensive mice, keyboards, improved speakers, and have portability.

With form factor goes the ease of upgrade or repair. In general, the larger and less integrated the system, the easier it is to repair or upgrade it.

Although you do not need high performance, we usually want the best value for the money, and a bit faster response times can't hurt. More ram is better. Larger HDD is better. CPU scores can be looked up:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
A second tab has graphics scores that are less important to you.

Places to buy are many in the US.
There are weekly sales of a couple of models and clearances.
Walmart, Staples, Best Buy, Newegg.com, Tigerdirect.com, Amazon.com gets you a variety and you can google a model once you find one to see if it is offered for less somewhere else.

You read a couple of surveys on quality:
2012 survey:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2020964/apple-and-lenovo-desktop-pcs-tops-in-satisfaction.html
2011 Survey:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244481/desktop_pc_reliability_and_satisfaction_dell_and_hp_home_pcs_get_poor_grades.html
and use it as a factor, but Apple is expensive for what you get.

My sister wanted what you describe. She has a few older PCs and monitors, but wanted one where the internet worked faster and boot up faster and application responsiveness up to $500 and she ended up with a Lenovo H430 at Staples with Windows 8, a Core i5-3330 and 8GB RAM and a 1TB HDD and that met her requirements well in a tower pc.

Now, you start with a couple that meet your needs and see if you can do better:
A basic slimline Acer-Gateway for $340
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113245
Model SX2370-UR13
A6-Series APU A6-3620(2.2GHz)
1x4GB DDR3 500GB 7200 RPM SATA III HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6530D
Gigabit ethernet, Bluetooth and WiFi
memory card reader
2USB 3.0 in back. 4USB 2.0
VGA and HDMI outputs
CPU score 2924, and graphics G3D 548
It would be nice to buy and install a second 4GB RAM card. That is easy.
$30 to $35 in a do-it-yourself
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/memory/#t=11&v=1500&z=4096&c=90&n=1&sort=a8
Just match what it has already in speed.
It is an early 2012 CPU below an Intel i3 but still fast enough with graphics power you don't really need but is above Intel integrated HD 4000 but not gaming level. It is the new Windows 8 to get used to, but is a faster boot and shutdown. Does what you want and the price is considered cheap and size is small, but upgrading is minimal.
In Intel, whether Newegg or Walmart at about the same price, size and brand, gets an Intel G640 Pentium with 4GB RAM and 1TB HDD. The CPU and graphics are a little lower in performance but the HDD is bigger:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gateway-SX2865-UR308-Small-Form-Factor-Desktop-PC-with-Intel-Pentium-G640-Processor-4GB-Memory-1TB-Hard-Drive-and-Windows-8-Monitor-Not-Included/22018103
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113244

The choices are endless, so you have to narrow down your preferences and price point. Then you can just browse the online circulars and sites.

Are there any free online games for my laptop like MyCandyLove or StarProject?

Q. I love StarProject the most. I would like something that doesn't need to be downloaded and can be played on PC and it's free. (Give me the website link if you could) Thanks. :)
And please don't say "Yes" or "No". If you think you know one, name it please. I'd appreciate that.

I recently purchased an Alienware M17x gaming laptop & notice that there's a blinking red light on the lid (the Alienware logo). I put in a new battery for it since the old one wouldn't hold a charge. I haven't turned on the laptop yet (after replacing the battery) thinking that this red light means the new battery is charging. I had it charging all night & the light is still blinking. Does anyone know what this blinking red light means? Could this new battery be bad as well or is there something wrong with the AC adapter? Please help!

I don't know if I necessarily need a legit gaming laptop but I want to play with no lag. Stuff like ram and processor.

Answer
Well I'm no expert but you should have at least a 2.0 (coming from a guy with a 1.8 lol) processor. As far as the RAM, I have 2GB, but if you can find one with 3 that's great. For professional gaming laptops you're talking at least $1000, I got an amazing deal of $240 but mine isn't state of the art either lol. When logged in and in game, pause it, Esc, and go to Options, then Video Settings. Make these changes and the game should run a lot faster for you:

Graphics: Fast
Render Distance: Tiny or Short (Tiny works the best, but if you got a good laptop then you can go up to Short or Normal. Don't do Far unless you really need to, massive lagging)
Smooth Lighting: OFF
3D Anaglyph: OFF
GUI Scale: Auto
Brightness: Moody
Particles: Minimal
Performance: Power Saver
View Bobbing: OFF
Advanced OpenGL: OFF
Clouds: OFF

I'm looking for a cheap gaming laptop. I know there's probably not one cause I've searched for them. But what's the cheapest one I can buy for eve online. It only needs to last for about a year. Thanks =]

Answer
Actually, you are in luck. Up until 3 weeks ago a half way decent laptop for gaming would set you back at least $800, but AMD just released their new processor line based on the Llano platform. They are called the A series processor. Like the Intel Sandy Bridge core i series, they have the ability to change their clock speed to match whatever task you are performing and they have integrated graphics built right into the cpu, but unlike the core i series, the A series has much superior graphics capabilities. It can run most of even the highest demanding games to at least their medium graphic settings all without a graphics card. You can't do that with the Intel chips. Here are a few models to take a look at:

ASUS K53TA-BBR6 $479.99 at Best Buy

AMD A-6 Quad Core
4 GB DDR3 RAM

I am always on the move and I need a gaming laptop (because let's face it... Xbox and PlayStation can argue all they want but PC will always come on top). I've been stacking a whole bunch of games in my steam library but my laptop can only play TF2 and CS:S on VERY LOW settings. I want to play higher resolution games without there being "problems" (i.e. lag, overheating, below medium graphics, low RAM/Memory, etc.) and I also have certain specifications. Back light keyboard, front screen camera (including integrated microphone of course), Windows 8 OS, and (optional) 1080p. Now I've looked at the Alienware 14 and saw it's price. It was high but I was planning on buying it. Then when I got together with some of my nerdy friends I learned one of my friends has some Dell computer (sorry I don't have the name) that was $400 and it can run games like Bioshock Infinite on medium... Well damn... I don't need to run ultra on all my games but I WILL NOT run any lower than medium. I would like to know what laptops that would be around that price range and will last me for awhile. I would need to run games like Skyrim, CoD Ghosts, GTA V, War Thunder, ARMA 2, and other various games that are well known and/or new. I can't get a desktop and I can't "make my own laptop". I would also just like to say thanks in advance for taking your time to answer.

Answer
Well i think the gaming laptop which is not very expensive and very capable at the same time is Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p. Lenovo IdeaPad is really nice laptop which can high graphic games since it has i7 processor, 8GB RAM and Dual NVIDIA GeForce GT750M Discrete Graphics. see more information in this review:

http://whatlaptop.org/lenovo-ideapad-y510p-15-6-inch-laptop

Well if you could just raise your budget you can get a laptop from ASUS ROG series which is again a high performer but Lenovo is pretty competitive too. Hope this answer help.

I have a budget of £800 Im looking for a new laptop. I want it solely for gaming, skyping and for the internet. Unfortunately I know nothing of hardware so I don't know what Im looking for. I currently have an Acer with about a 17inch screen and a large keyboard to match. I would prefer large for both and I would also prefer a webcam and mic built in but if not then I can buy them elsewhere. If any more information is needed then I will do all I can to provide. Im just tired of my old laptop struggling to run minecraft and being unable to run pretty much any new game and overheating with youtube if I don't hold it the right way.
The problem is that I have to buy a UK version otherwise it wont have coverage and there will be problems with repairs and compatibility. I cant find a HP Envy but I can find HP Pavilion. The only Envy I could find was http://www.amazon.co.uk/dv7-7201sa-17-3-inch-Notebook-Processor-Integrated/dp/B009YY80P0/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356006906&sr=8-1-fkmr0

Other than that I found a couple of things close to your recommendation:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-NP355V5C-SuperMulti-Graphics-Premioum/dp/B008EJGJHC/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1356007095&sr=8-13

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pavilion-dv7-6c01ea-Quad-Core-A6-3430MX-Processor/dp/B006W7B2WA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1356007095&sr=8-3

Am I getting close? I think Im willing to go up to £1000ish but Id prefer to stick to £800

The annual PCWORLD Survey last result was December 2011, and Dell and HP did not fare well.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
And, Specials seem to end today at Dell unless extended, but, the best specifications I could find for you is with Dell Inspiron 17R SE at Dell.com

There are a few options available.
Pricing may be different tomorrow, but this appears to be the best today and is in budget.

GT 650M gaming can be looked up. The 1080p screen may slow the frame rate for low-medium-high, but I cannot find a better GPU/CPU combo at under £800

The HPs in the price range are not even close. Lenovo Y series is 15.6" not full HD
This Samsung is a better brand and costs a bit more:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-series-5-550p-17-3-laptop-silver-17563638-pdt.html
It is x900 resolution instead of x1080.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M on first you show is garbage compared with GT 650M
cheaper Samsung NP355V5C 7670M is similar to GT 630M, has a weaker A10-4600M CPU at 3158 score, is not full high def, is 15.6" where I thought you want a 17.3"
HP Pavilion dv7-6c01ea has a dismally slow CPU compared to everything else presented so far, and is still only HD 7670M.
At your price point, you want GT 650M, and only Dell and Lenovo show that so far, and dell is 17.3" full High def at under 800.

USA prices are irrelevent. There is no VAT here and instead prices without local sales tax of up to 8%. The competition is also higher here, so pricing is lower. Totally a waste to look at USA prices.
The 739 pound Dell ordered today is the way to go (prices go up or down later) or pay more for a Samsung of lower specs. Unless you find another GT 650M or higher graphics.
Samsung at Amazon UK is available:
15.6" Core i5 with the GT 650M in x768 lower def screen:

FINAL:
Others at www.laptopsdirect.co.uk
You need to open details of each laptop with dedicated graphics from £500 - £1000
GTX 660M is better than GT 650M
17.3" appears to be more desireable to you than 15.6"
Higher definition screen better than lower.
Core i7's better than core i5's.
i7-3xxx and i5-3xxx better than i7-2xxx and i5-2xxx
Samsungs are there in stock with GT 650M

This is the new commercial where a guy in a JETS t shirt picks up his flat screen TV that then changes into an IPad, then into a laptop, then to a DroidX and finally back into his flat screen TV. All the while the screen is showing different NFL programs from NFL Red Zone to 2011 Fantasy projections. During the duration of the commercial there is a trance/techno style song playing in the background. What is the name of this song?

This commercial aired Sunday Dec. 26th during the Ravens@Browns game.

As of April 2013 what would be the best gaming laptop for the games i listed?
I know TES online is not out yet but could someone make a good guess of what specs i need?
looking to spend around $800 but i will pay more if it is worth it.

Answer
Lenovo.com
IdeaPad Y500 Laptop- 59371965 - at $850 plus tax. The GT 730M seems to be a little better than the GTX 660M. The link is long but not hard to navigate Lenovo.com

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312438
The down level Y500 with the pair of GT 650M in sli. With an i5 processor, a few games will CPU bottleneck. It is $900 and taxed in California.
Both in 1080p

Now, hunt the stores, Amazon, Newegg, Tigerdirect, Fry's, Best Buy.

Come up with a GTX 660M or better at these prices.

TES:
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=3734&game=The%20Elder%20Scrolls%20Online
Requirements will be fairly low.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152377
AT $800 is enough.
You can go cheap, and it is probably enough to play, even with weak build quality of Acer:

Despite browsing through a lot of laptops, i still could not find the laptop which satisfies my requirements :

1tb hdd
8 gb ram
i7 3rd gen processor
2gb graphics card
budget 50k

please help

Answer
change any one parameter and you have a choice, but if the purpose is gaming, you get what you need, and not what you want.

500GB HDD:
http://www.flipkart.com/acer-aspire-v3-571g-laptop-3rd-gen-ci7-4gb-500gb-win7-hp-2gb-graph-nx-rznsi-005/p/itmdcgfsk7y3zr2s?pid=COMDCGFPWYX5NDWQ
Take the Acer, replace the 2x2GB RAM with 2x4GB
http://www.flipkart.com/corsair-ddr3-4-gb-laptop-ram-cmso4gx3m1a1600c11/p/itmdhgydacx8xq22?pid=RAMDHFXFBMKZAHZF
46296+4122=50418, and sell off the 2 used sticks or maybe Flipkart will make a deal.
Acer would have 500GB HDD, 8GB RAM, i7-3610QM quad core 3rd gen, 2GB GT 630M, x768 display.

Make your budget 51990
http://www.flipkart.com/samsung-np350v5c-s08in-laptop-3rd-gen-ci7-8gb-1-tb-win8-2gb-graph/p/itmdeh2t3yfnqdds
Samsung NP350V5C-S08IN Laptop (3rd Gen i7-3630qm/ 8GB/ 1 TB/ Win8/ 2GB Graph HD 7670M
x768 display

as a better brand.

Or, change the i7 to i5 and get better gaming in-budget:
http://www.snapdeal.com/product/samsung-np370r5es05in-notebook-intel-core/661920?pos=4;24
Samsung NP370R5E-S05IN Notebook ( Intel Core i5-3230M/6 GB/1 TB HDD/ Win8/ 2 GB Graphics-AMD-8750M /15.6 Inch), and the Rs 42199 allows you to change a 2GB stick to a matching 4GB and stay under budget.

The HD 8750M is a better graphics card
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

But, for gaming you want the best graphics and LCD so an HD+ x900 display and GT 650M with the i5 and 6GB RAM is plenty and best gaming performance:
http://www.snapdeal.com/product/samsung-np550p5cs01in-laptop-3rd-gen/221751?pos=11;24
Rs 50581

Mac or Pc? Buying a new laptop.?

missc_rock

I have a Dell right now. Its big and heavy and gave me a ton of problems! I really want a new laptop. I want a large memory and the best graphics card. I also want it to be a little smaller and much more lighter than my Dell. I plan on using it for college and taking it places with me. So what do you sugggest a mac or a pc like Dell? Pros and cons please and any experienced mac users that can offer pros and cons too. I've heard that pc is better for gaming. But do macs have good graphics cards?

Answer
Ignore Computer Dr he appears to know squat about computers with that comment...

Seriously now...
Mac laptops are good. I don't like Apple, but I'll give them the credit owed. They make a decent laptop, at an almost resonable price, and the Customer Support is on the top 5 in the WORLD.

Their quality control is extremely good, although the occasional lemon does sneak through.

The primary disadvantages are the ability for user upgrades is almost non-existant and the cost for repairs at an Apple Authorised Facility is double (or more) for an identical repair on *any* other laptop.
Next, is the Software issue. Unless you're running Bootcamp, there is a lot of software out there that can NOT properly run on a Mac, since there are a fair number of companies that refuse to pay the $50k "fee" (per PROGRAM) that Apple charges for something like 50kb(?) of code to ensure the program runs properly with the Apple OS.

Do they have good Graphics cards? Yes and No... Some have excellent cards, other don't.
First things first...avoid Intel graphics chips of ANY kind... Intel makes decent CPUs, but their graphics solutions absolutely SUCK!
Next...once you have found the graphics details, look for the card. For nVidia, you'll likely see a 3 digit number with an M attached to it. For AMD, you'll see a 4 digit number, again, most likely with an M attached to it.
Regardless, the key is in the numbers. look to the second number (tens column for the nVidia and the hundreds column for the AMD). Under a 6, it is a card best used for Office Suites and (maybe) watching DVDs and surfing the web. If the number is a 6 or higher, it has a bit more power, and can be used for mid-level to high-end gaming.

Now, for the remaining stats. You'll want at a bare minimum, a dual core rated at 2.4GHz or higher. For a W7 machine, you'll want a minimum of 3Gb of RAM. For OSX, you'll want at least 2Gb, maybe more (don't know the system requirements, nor the software "footprint" on the system RAM for OSX).
Bare minimum for the HDD (avoid SSDs) is 250Gb. Partition the drive into a 100Gb section, which is for the OS and required System Level programs (i.e.: Security suite, etc). The second partition is for everything else (multiple smaller partitions, or one massive one, your choice. For College, I'd suggest a minimum of 750Gb HDD, and maybe creating a second 100Gb partition strictly for your Office program, and all your work.
Also, remember to spend on a good desk lock (to ensure it's still there), and a first class Security Suite. (While I've never used it, I've heard good things about VIPRE (first link below). I also recommend downloading and installing Malwarebytes (second link below). This one is an "on demand" scanner. Once a month, update it, and run it (should take under an hour for an average laptop).

Now, unless you're going to want to do photo, video, or music editing on your laptop, and the extent of your gaming is the Sims or similar "low to moderage" demand games, a 460 and up, or an HD4650 and up should be fine.

Finally...depending on your wants and needs, you'll be replacing one back breaker for another. Laptops are universally lighter, and more portable than desktops, however, with laptops ranging from under 3 kilos to over 10 kilos. You literally receive what you need.
For example, one laptop that came out a few years back, could take games like Crysis and (just) beat it down, where most DESKTOPS would wimper in the corner like a whipped puppy. Problem is, the unit with everything required, plus the shoulder bag/back pack to carry it, came in at almost 13 kilos...that's over 27 POUNDS...the power brick was almost 2 kilos alone!
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is one "laptop" that a former co-worker bought to use as a Day-Planner... The damned thing couldn't run WoW...and you can almost literally run WoW on a kitchen toaster!

If you're looking for an "uber" gaming machine, you're looking at a minimum 7 kilos when transporting it.
If you're looking for a net runner that can play some flash games (meaning not a Mac), you're looking at a minimum of 4 kilos when transporting it.

Good Luck!

Answer
Log on as an Administrator.

First delete/un-install all programs/applications/games you no longer use (especially those you have disks for).

Burn/copy to CD/DVD/flash drive any and all music/pictures/movie files, verify they copied successfully and delete the originals.

Download install and run Ccleaner, both 'Registry' and 'Cleaner' parts...
http://www.ccleaner.com

Run Disk Cleanup (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools) check/tick all boxes, they're all safe to remove.

Run Disk Defragmenter (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools).

Increase Virtual Memory...

XP

Open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.

In the console tree, right-click Computer Management (Local), and then select Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click Performance Options, and under Virtual memory, uncheck the check box of Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, click Change.
In the Drive list, click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change (usually C:).
Under Paging file size for selected drive, type a new paging file size (4095 for both) in the Initial Size and Maximum Size box, and then click Set.
Click Apply and OK.

Vista/Win 7

1.Open Control Panel>System and Maintenance>System.

2.In the left âTasksâ, click on 'Advanced System Settings'.

3.Click the âAdvancedâ tab. In âPerformanceâ section, click on 'Settings' button.

7.Select and highlight the appropriate drive that users want to change the paging file settings under the box of âDrive [Volume Label]â Usually 'C:'.

8.To fix a permanent size for the paging file, click on Custom size button, and set the values of Initial Size 4095 (MB) and Maximum Size 4095 (MB). To make the size of pagefile.sys static. Then click on Set button.

Click Start>Run and type

msconfig
(or type it in the search bar)

and press Enter/Return. Click the Startup tab and uncheck anything that's not needed at startup.

Go to this site to check which services can be safely stopped/removed...

What's the best up to date laptop you can buy for no more than $750?

Jeremy

I prefer at least an i5, windows 7, webcam and a lot of memory.
I will probably buy Microsoft Office 2010 separate.

I will be playing some games on it every once in a while like runescape or league of legends.

Does anyone have legitimate recommendations?

Answer
I actually just bought a laptop after over 10 days of looking and found an a pretty cool deal. Theres a seller on Amazon called "Electronic Mind" that is selling some really powerful Acer Aspires way below retail value and has the lowest price on Amazon all together.

This laptop is very up to date and very powerful, I would go for this.

Here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YD9K1K?ie=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YD9K1K?ie=UTF8&seller=A2Q11VP7A3L0BR&sn=Electronic%20Mind

I dont know how they can sell them so cheap but I have had mine now for 2 weeks and I am very happy with my brand new laptop.

With Acer Aspire you cant go wrong. The laptop is wicked, I am running very strenuous programs on it such as music production software and hardcore games and it can take anything I throw at it

What should I consider when buying a gaming laptop?

best gaming laptop xps on Dell XPS M1730 gaming notebook,
best gaming laptop xps image

(no name)

I realize that "gaming laptop" is like an oxy moron but I don't have room for a desktop. What should I look for when buying a laptop. The one I have now lags so hard its ridiculous. I need it to be capable for MInecraft, C&C, Civilization, maybe sims. So nothing that crazy as far as gaming goes.If you have any specific suggestions that would be great.

For example what should I have (minimum) processor, graphics card, RAM, etc...

Thanks

Answer
It would be nice to know your price range, I could make a pretty solid recommendation, but i'll do my best in directing you to a good computer.

Two things to stay away from if you want a gaming laptop.
1) Mac's. They are wayy too overpriced for what they have to offer.
2) Alienware. Sure they are great gaming computers, but they break easy, and they are overpriced as well.

Processor:
I reccommend an Intel i5 or higher (i7 would be best)
anything above about 2.8Ghz is good, above 3.0 is ideal.

Graphics Card:
Nvidia GeForce is a good line of graphics cards, 1GB is good.

RAM:
Anything 4GB or higher.

I recommend any XPS laptop from Dell.

Why does minecraft overheat my computer?

Brian A

I have a relatively strong gaming laptop (the dell xps 15z to be specific) and it has no problem running high quality 3D games such as Portal 2, Amnesia, or TF2, but whenever I play minecraft, the fan starts running a whole lot faster and the computer heats up a lot. Why is minecraft taking more computing power to run than games that are more advanced than it?

Answer
You have to take into consideration that minecraft is incredibly graphically sensitive, as it is generating a potentially infinite world around you. Minecraft actually uses up more processing power than any of the other games you have listed.

I have Norton antivirus and there are no viruses or issues there.
I run defrag and cleanup once a week.
Everything else runs fine and it's random how long it will play before it turns off. Sometimes it's hours and sometimes it's only a few minutes.

I did put the video settings on high in Sims. Should I try lowering the video settings?

Could it be overheating or a fan issue? My computer does tend to shake a little and make a lot of noise and the fan runs a lot when I play the game (or any CD game.) But the shutting off is just quiet.

Answer
Hey, that is a great question, thanks for coming to answers, I hope this information helps.

Your computer may need general maintenance, this should help.

Delete all unwanted files and free Disk Space. Make sure at least 15% of your disk space is open. The computer needs this space for defragmenting the hard drive, Run defragmenter...

Check for viruses and other malware, clean them if found. Scan you computer with up to date anti virus program.

Clean fan with compressed air, and make sure it has air flow.

Click start>Run.. Type msconfig>enter>Start Up. Uncheck the boxes for the programs that you think you may not use often

Increase the RAM of your system. If you have vista or windows 7 you could use ram boost.

What is the best laptop brand that doesn't break so fast? What brand do you have?

~Paradox~

I currently have an Acer laptop, because it's affordable and works just as well as any other laptop. However, it breaks SO easily. Like in the course of about a year my laptop is already falling apart. :(

The hinges on my current laptop have cracks going down them. I don't even get how that came to be. I'm not opening my computer screen Hulk style. It's just the way these computers break that's frustrating, because I can't fix these kind of problem.

This isn't the first time either!! I've had an MSI laptop in the past and an Acer and they break so easily that it's almost not worth buying these brands anymore. I'm also not a fan of the mac computers by apple...

Anyhow, I'm currently a college student. So having a laptop is crucial! What's a good laptop brand that last more than just a year or two?

Thanks for answering! (:

Answer
My first laptop was a Acer. What you are experiencing is also the reason I stopped using mine and had to buy another laptop. I ended up duct taping the cracks until I could afford another laptop.

My mom has a Acer laptop that does not have a latch that holds the screen to the rest of the computer and she has never had this problem. So if you could find a Acer without a lock on the screen, you may not face this problem with an Acer in the future.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L755. It does not have a lock the computer screen. The computer I have was around $550 when I purched it in April of 2012. The only problems I have had with this computer is that it will not play old games. I have not had any problems with the new games.
