I'm already building a gaming desktop, but I just want to know if there are any good gaming laptops under $600. I like the mobility of laptops, and if I can have both a gaming desktop and a laptop that would just be awesome. I've been looking a lot of places but the specs for the gpu on a lot of them just suck while they have a spectacular processor.

If you're looking for a good gaming laptop then you shouldn't look for one with the best cpu but rather the best gpu. A laptop with the latest I7 cpu will perform worse than a dualcore with superior GPU.
Yes it's nice to have a good cpu but remember if the gpu bottlenecks it's useless for games.

my aspire one on the 6 cell gets almost 4 an a half in normal surfing

This is sort of a pointless question.

Of course there will be new CPU's, new GPU's, faster and higher capacity RAM and hard drives. They are in a constant state of change, and new additions to each of those categories come out at least once a year, so you're looking at at least 2 generations better than what we have now.

But you might want to rethink your strategy, as a super powerful gaming laptop is not very portable and it's battery life will suck. And as a college student myself, you are going to want a laptop that you can take where ever you need, easily (both weight and size) and something that wont die in an hour. Come back to Yahoo Answers when you are ready to buy a gaming laptop, as any advice as to parts is pure speculation and will lead you astray.

Actually In terms of gaming and raw power... a desktop has a lot more to offer. You could buy say a 800 dollar gaming desktop, and the price for a laptop with about the same power, is about 1400-1600. If this changes you mind... take a look at MyCustombuild.com, they have a option for about 800 that will pack a much bigger punch than any 700 dollar laptop you will find on the market, will also play all games from 2011 and also ones from 2012(not ultra settings though).
ALSO*** Desktops are MUCH easier and CHEAPER to upgrade for gaming because usually the only upgrade you may need in the future is a video that you can pick up for 100-200 bucks to continue playing the newest titles. (really you can spend as much as you want on video cards, but 100-200 should do the trick.)

My husband has Cystic Fibrosis, he is almost 24 years old and he was given about a year left to live in July of 2012.

Since then he has been trying to make a bucket list of sorts, things he wants or needs, or just would like to have before he passes. He has been an avid video gamer all his life due to his illness, he was never really able to go outside and play, and as he grew up it just got worse and worse until he's almost completely bedridden. So he has always found solace and happiness in being able to play video games, mainly PC games. I want to be able to buy him a desktop and a laptop for when he has to be admitted to the hospital, and he has to stay for a minimum of 1 month, usually more. This is the only dream he can realistically achieve due to the severity of his illness at this point. (His lung function is less than 18%, he cannot move around much without getting severely out of breath)

He was offered to make a "wish" to the Dream Foundation a few months back, but after all the hype, they haven't really been responding to him anymore, so we're starting to feel that it's a lost cause with them.

I definitely do not have the money to buy the gaming laptop/desktop that he needs, even if I were to save every extra penny, it would take more than a year and it could be too late by then.

So I would be so grateful if there is any information on any computer companies or the like, or any sort of foundation or fund that would be able to do this for him quickly, and not take 5+ months. We would be able to provide proof of his condition, doctor's letters etc as well.. Thanks

Screen size needs to be at least 14" also I'd prefer a 500GB hard drive but I can deal with something smaller. Right now ASUS and Alienware seem to be the top contenders after shortly looking at the current laptops available. Also $1200 is the absolute max I'm willing to go. Well the Asus is a nice laptop you can find better deals on gaming laptops. The 4G of ram might be little lite for gaming, go with anything that has 6G of ram. Don't spend more then $600 they are going down.

I followed Jay's link and found that the laptop was a dell inspiron 15.6, which is in stock at walmart.....You can buy that laptop at your nearest Walmart store and enjoy your games! I'm not sure if you can play cod on that laptop (depends on which game you want to play) but anyway I'm sure that the laptop will be able to handle roblox and minecraft.

Alienware does international shipping if you request it. But you will have to pay import duty that is the catch.
Best if someone buys it in U.S and brings it, cause in India their is a law 1 person is legally allowed to bring upto 2 laptops with them on a flight without having to pay import duty.
There are many companies that do gaming laptops, its just alienware is now the designer product. But it isn't as famous as it was before, as they are now owned by Dell.

Most sold notebooks are from TOSHIBA. Oh and this is world wide survey. To my knowledge, in USA its DELL which is sold the most. In Middle East, Toshiba, in India HP. Have several batteries for your laptop charged up......Take some dvd's and watch a movie with ear phones........play games............write some letters in word, email when you are able to connect to the internet....learn a new program.

Make sure you pack food..........airlines just don't hand it out anymore......some you can buy a sandwich from for $5.....others you survive on peanuts.

Buy several beverages after security or have empty water bottles and fill them at the water fountain.........have flavored packets you can pour into them.......

Most flights are running a few hours or more late......they are trying to leave with full planes. At the airport you can walk around or just sit and people watch.

Grab a pillow and blanket before you sit down..........take a cat nap........

Read a book

Pay your bills..........go through your mail.

It's a bit more complicated than that. But more or less, yes.

I've done a couple hackintoshes before. It generally takes lots of patience and a good bit of technical expertise (or at least troubleshooting ability). But if you're game, and you're willing to spend 10-20 hours tweaking settings, reinstalling, failing, and trying again, then check out:

It's an excellent resource with lots of how-to guides. If you're willing to buy a netbook for this express purpose, then look there first and see if there are any netbooks that are particularly osx friendly. Laptops are generally easier than desktops because they have a defined set of hardware so, chances are, someone has already figured out the appropriate settings and posted them. So you may have a lot more luck than I did.

However, even so, there's often little quirks. For instance, on my Dell Inspiron 600m, I had no wired internet and no hardware graphics acceleration (so things were a bit clunky). Though everything else worked pretty well (including WiFi). So I was able to use it for iPhone development for a while. But I gave up and bought a MacBook Pro later on because it was a huge pain to stay updated. So maybe things are a bit easier now.

As long as you're not a gamer and don't mind spending 3 times the money on a MacBook, it's a great choice.

I personally wouldn't buy one, because they are extremely overpriced for their hardware. I'm a gamer too, that's not why I wouldn't buy one, I just couldn't stomach paying a huge overpriced fee for something I know could be bought retail for thousands of dollars less.

The Operating System is absolutely beautiful though. I don't care what anyone tells you, as someone who works and lives completely in the worlds of computers with a list of certs a mile long and a Bach. in Computer Science.... the Mac OS is just amazing. Their utilization of that overpriced hardware is a work of art and their simplistic user interface designed for people who really don't know much about computers, while still built on a Unix core allowing power users access to the types of things we need and want, is just astounding.

When/if they finally make a Mac OS that will run on non-proprietary hardware, they may not kill Windows but, they will definitely take more than a considerable chunk out of their market percentage. (Hackintosh doesn't count)

To run all the modern games today minimum requirements are likely to be systems with intel i5 > 2.5/6 GHZ boost up to 3.0+ GHZ (Or AMD equivalent), and a graphic card > Nvidia 9600M-GT or AMD Radeon HD 6470M and above.
The 1 GIG or 2 GIG GT640M appears to be a decent mobile video card.
Oh and 6 GIG 1333MHZ/1600MHZ DDR3 RAM, although you can add this your self.

Get an asus. They are amazing gaming laptops. I have an Asus from 2007 that with a duocore processor, and It is STILL my primary computer. I play minecraft, black ops, MW3, saints row 3, mass effect 2, Dead Space 2, and lots of other new games on it, and it runs FLAWLESSLY! J have a friend who owns a newer Asus, and it is lightning fast, extrememly good for everything, and it is still under $750! And he got it to replace an Alienware, so his expectations were sky high. Asus also has amazing customer support and will help you with any problem. Hope I helped.

Laptops are not for gaming. They will overheat and wear out. They have insufficient cooling and the parts are not built for sustaining heavy 3D applications for hours on end.

Go desktop. Large box, lot of cooling, quality parts. Then there is less regret when the laptop parts burn or keeps fuming carbon monoxide on your desk.

Laptops are usually 50% cheaper than real parts. But so is what you get.

I'm going to boarding school next year and my parents have told me to start thinking about what laptop I want now. Since PC games will be the most accessible entertainment source, I want a gaming laptop that can run most games at a decent framerate (30 fps or above) on mid to high settings. Laptops are not necessarily the best for gaming, the reason being that as games get bigger and more complex your computer starts hitting the wall for speed and performance. Laptops are designed to be small and portable, to do this they have limited what the computer is capable. You lose the upgradability, the thermal solution, smarter power consumption and cheap parts. When choosing a laptop, your going to be looking for a good manufacturer since it is through the manufacturer the computer can be easily fixed and upgraded. Dell is a large company that has good support as long as you keep your warranty, however they have their reputation for cutting corners and low grade. Toshiba is a good company, although they tend to have slightly higher prices.

When shopping for your laptop I would rather suggest looking for computers within your budget, within your desired performance, and then research the reputation of the manufacturer.
Now days a good computer runs at about these specs

3.0 GHz Dual Core (I only shop Intel but that is a matter of preference and opinion)
4Gb of fast ram RAM
100 GB HDD (This is actual storage space, bigger the better but that is counter intuitive with laptops)
Windows 64 bit (With out the 64 bit version you lose the ability to use better hardware and are limited to only 4gb of ram with 32 bit version)
Make sure the laptop has a good thermal solution, if the manufacturer mentions it has a focus on thermal, that should be enough (most ignore it)

That should be all you need to know, ultimately I recommend building a desktop for all of the pros that a laptop doesn't have. Desktops allow you to build your own computer, and at your own price. Usually this is more expensive than buying from a manufacturer but you have the ability to upgrade and swap out parts as you see fit.
