Q. Looking for one to get for my little sister. She's in high school and will be using it for school, but also for playing games like The Sims and stuff. I'd like to get her one that'll last her into college, if possible. Thanks very much for your help!

Answer
There's so many laptops. You should do research yourself. Asking here helps but this is such a general question. Look up reviews on different brands. You can find many great laptops for under 1000. Think to yourself. Do you want an ultrabook? Do you want this feature and that feature? That will narrow down what you want. Then just look at reviews and prices and make a decision. Good luck.

Keep in mind the more you spend on it, it will be more future proof. Seems like you got the right idea in mind. Spend good money but don't overdue it.

Some brands I like for average people are Samsung, Sony Vaio, Asus, and a few others. For gaming and high performance, Maingear and Asus ROG.

I haven't like Dell and HP because their build quality is usually bad but they have gotten better.
If you could find an Asus ROG (maybe a G55) laptop for under $1000 that would be awesome. But it's not very portable.

Don't buy a mac. They are overpriced.

For games make sure you have the latest integrated technology (found in sandybridge and ivybridge processors with intel hd 4000 and 3000) for games like the sims. For things like console games like MW3, Skyrim, you will want a dedicated GPU. I would recommend a 4 core processor highly. Any 4 core is plenty fast and you will love it. 8 gb of ram is also a must. That's all you need. 4gb is limited so 8 is perfect. An SSD is also an option but storage is limited for the price.

Good luck. Keep in mind build quality as well as performance.

What's the best laptop for an adult who's never used a computer before?

Lee

It should have wifi, a built in webcam, a good bit of memory and a dvd burner. I don't want it too big or too small either.

I'd like a specific laptop like a HPtx2110us or a Dell Vostro 1520 not just a company. Thanks.

Answer
I wouldn't get a Mac to start, Only 10% of computers sold are Macs so there no point learning on a niche product...

Also a Mac will be 4x the price of a Dell with the exact same cpu and ram specs... Then theres program support... Windows will run almost any apps or games ever released, Macs dont even support 10% of available software out there and almost no games....

Any hardware like printers or usb attachments will always work with windows but u almost always have to buy silly expensive Apple branded Peripherals for a Mac just so it will work properly with it..

As for specifics, Any decent brand like Dell with an i7 cpu will offer more than enough power for ur first computer.. Most decent i7 laptops now come with at least 6GB ram and a blue ray drive... Thats more than 2x the computing power of a Macbook and at also less than 1/2 the price....

Then again, a cheap core 2 duo with 4 GB ram will offer great performance still for under $500... Same spec as Macbook but 1/4 the price...

Tho an i7 with 6GB ram and a blueray drive laptop is cutting edge and still will cost under $1000...

Would be over $3000 to get the same specs in a Mac, Even tho they are made of the exact same parts inside....

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Tablets are just toys to me. They can not handle the work load like Laptops and Desktops and do not have the storage capacity you will end up needing.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. My experience with them are limited because the few I worked on made me think they were designed in such a way as it would take a blow torch and a jack hammer just to disassemble them.

Choose wisely.

What laptop should I get? Or what kind should I be looking for?

Ken

I mainly use my current laptop for browsing the internet with anywhere from one to 30 tabs open on a browser. I would like to use it as a minor gaming laptop where I'll probably have three games on it at a time. I also have a ton of photos, music, documents for school, etc; thus, I'm guessing I'll need one with plenty of gigabytes in the hard drive.

If that really doesn't help, just tell me which recently released/current laptop is great for lasting long and for leisure use around for 4 hours a day.
I can't believe I forgot this part, at most I'll be paying around $600 or $700. So most Macbooks, if I were to even think about getting one, would be out of my wallet's range.

Which laptop-selling company provides the best customer support?

I currently have a Dell and because of my terrible experiences with their customer support, i will not be purchasing my next laptop from them. One of my top priorities in my search for a new laptop is the quality of customer service. I'd appreciate specific examples rather than general statements, if possible. Thanks.

Answer
Consumer Reports last rating (March, 2010) of computer put:
Reliability: from #1 on down: #1: Apple, #2: Acer, Toshiba, #3: Lenovo,Gateway, HP, #4: Sony, Compaq, #5 Dell

Support ranking (March 2010), from #1 on down:
Apple (score=86); Lenovo (63), Toshiba (60), Dell (56), HP/Compaq (53), Acer/Gateway (39)

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2400797,00.asp

I have also read many reviews that the Genius Bar at the Apple Stores is the most knowledgeable of tech support offered in a retail store setting. However, their Tech Support is not cheap, unless you buy a 3-years Service Agreement from Apple.

If Tech Support is your top concern, you may want to look into a Mac. Apple is the biggest personal computer and have the volume to get the best suppliers. Well. Maybe not the suppliers who are best to their own employees.

If you want to stay with Windows, I'd recommend Lenovo because their Thinkpads are still better made than most. Sony as a corporation has lost a lot of business in TV, music players and game consoles and hasn't really put out anything special in computers.

How to get my Macbook Fan noise down?

I have a Macbook 15" (i bought it early March 2012) ok so my Mac works great and all but the thing is i am a mine craft gamer. Whenever i open the program my Fans go very loud but when i close it it goes really calm. Whats the issue? PLEASE HELP

Answer
As you know the fans are there to keep the internal temps down. Games can cause a lot of heat from the components. Anyway, I would suggest placing the laptop on come type of stand so help with airflow all around it. I did a Google search a found several. I'm not a gamer, but I don't mind playing simple games once in awhile and I surf the Internet watch videos on YouTube, and I like making music for fun so guitar band would be cool. Is a Mac a good choice?

Answer
As long as you're not a gamer and don't mind spending 3 times the money on a MacBook, it's a great choice.

I personally wouldn't buy one, because they are extremely overpriced for their hardware. I'm a gamer too, that's not why I wouldn't buy one, I just couldn't stomach paying a huge overpriced fee for something I know could be bought retail for thousands of dollars less.

The Operating System is absolutely beautiful though. I don't care what anyone tells you, as someone who works and lives completely in the worlds of computers with a list of certs a mile long and a Bach. in Computer Science.... the Mac OS is just amazing. Their utilization of that overpriced hardware is a work of art and their simplistic user interface designed for people who really don't know much about computers, while still built on a Unix core allowing power users access to the types of things we need and want, is just astounding.

When/if they finally make a Mac OS that will run on non-proprietary hardware, they may not kill Windows but, they will definitely take more than a considerable chunk out of their market percentage. (Hackintosh doesn't count)

Which laptop or notebook should i buy?

Ferlin

I am planning to major in computer science and i want a good notebook for my college and gaming...i don't want to hackintosh and so i want a good recommendation from apple lineup ..i will bootcamp with windows 8 as my major OS...i want this notebook to play games like gta 5 at about medium settings and pay off for coming 4 years or should i buy alienware or other windows notebook

Answer
I recommend that you get a MacBook Air. I'm referring to one with an 11-inch screen that costs about $999.

I'm going to Thailand next month to do family business, and, being a 13 year old with a load of mental problems, 17 hours feels like 17 years. I have a flight from Los Angeles to Taiwan (14 to 14.5 hours) and a flight from Taiwan to Thailand (3 to 3.5 hours), the Taiwan-Thailand layover being 2 hours long so I'll have time to have fun in Taiwan I guess. Anyway, the last time I was on an airplane was Summer 2012, and I was about to die on the flight from Vancouver to Montreal (10 hours + San Diego to Vancouver flight; 4 hours) because I was so bored.. I don't want to die on my trip, so I need to entertain myself somehow. Can you recommend me some things to do? Also what books should I bring? What movies should I download on my laptop? Does China Airlines have wifi? Do I just ask for it or something lol what do I do? What do you think I should bring?

Also, I have a 7 pound rat terrier-chihuahua who has severe separation anxiety. My mum suggests we let my aunt take care of him while we leave, but I'm scared he'll end up like when my brother and I left for Canada for two weeks and he stopped eating and lost his hair. My friend suggest I put him in a pet hotel since she did that for her dog who also has severe separation anxiety. What do you think I should do for him? Please don't say I'm irresponsible for owning a dog and leaving him. I do love my dog and I truly wish I could take care of him, but we just can't.

Thank you so so so so so much!

Answer
Work on wiggling your ears(you might need a hand mirror), talk to strangers(maybe they're just friends you haven't met yet), get some zen meditation balls and work on your hand dexterity(its easy to spin them one way and hard to spin them the other), read a book(perhaps a series), get a headstart on doing some work(maybe school work or business work), work on isostatic exercises(that's where you tense/flex your muscles without moving, and it helps make you stronger in the exact position that you are flexing in), try to design a better mouse trap(on paper, power tools are probably frowned upon on airplanes), try to discern the meaning of life(other than 42), get some really fun time wasting apps on your phone, and use them until your phone dies, get some sort of portable gaming platform and go nuts with that, listen to music, listen to audiobooks, listen to music and audio books at the same time, try to hold a witty conversation with whoever is sitting next to you, meditate, sleep, power nap, browse the internet if possible, try to make other passengers think you are crazy by trying gnaw-off one of your limbs(who needs your 3rd toe anyway?) write a book(perhaps about someone who gnaws there own digits off out of boredom), try to convince people you are a terrorist(if you have a few years to life of down time once you get off the plane), learn to knit, learn to sow, learn how tie a fishing hook, learn how to tie a bowline knot, learn how to crochet, (learn how to spell the word crochet without spell check), start learning the language of the country you are going to, make up a language, learn how to program, download Microsoft flight simulator and pretend you are the pilot, flying the same route minute per minute, giving out announcements to the crew, get a rubics cube and try to solve it but rage quit. Oh and read the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series, they are great. You might also try xcom enemy unkown, that is a good game.

Should I buy a macbook pro now 2011 or wait for the 2012 version?

RuddyMoua

Don't tell me to buy something else different because I want the macbook pro for school.
Is the Macbook pro 2012 version going to be faster?
What do you think about bootcamp and games?
Games like
Lower end games
DOTA
LOL

Higher end games
Starcraft 2
Diablo 3 when it comes out.

Answer
for gaming, I would be better off having a PC, preferably an Alienware because its graphics are much better and more powerful than macbook pro.

But....

If you want a macbook pro for gaming, yes you'll have to dual boot (bootcamp), the 15" and 17" are better for gaming, 15" high end 2.2Ghz has much better graphics and would strongly recommend that for its GPU speed and processor speed.

I bootcamp my macbook pro for dota allstars (game is very addicting) and as far as I can tell, its not as bad as you think. It will work almost like a PC, but it gets hot, thats my only concern ( I have a cooler pad for mine. ) My macbook is able to handle the games for hours, tested intensely over the summer.

If you want to game on macbook pro, I strongly recommend a cooler pad because your mac will get extremely hot. Keep your laptop cool so the battery will long last and so is your laptop (clean it regularly from the inside, ie clean the fan from dust)

don't wait for 2012 because it will not change much, just some software updates and thats about it. Get it now if you want to.

if you want to save money on macbook pro, buy it from internet because you can save over $200. Don't buy one from apple store, they will rip you off.

EDIT: A 15" mac will be able to handle that, your a dota fan as well? nice, I thought I was the only one.

How much could it cost to upgrade my video card on my laptop?

best gaming laptops september 2011 on If you have any other tips, please write them in the comments below ...
best gaming laptops september 2011 image

QUEEN

I bought a laptop in September of 2011. I love Skyrim and would like to play it, but apparently the only thing that needs upgrading in order to play is the video card. According to the Elder Scrolls site, these are the minimum requirements to play:

OS: Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
Processor: Dual Core 2.0GHz or equivalent processor
Memory: 2GB System RAM
Hard Disk Space: 6GB free HDD Space
Video Card: Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM
Sound: DirectX compatible sound card

I have:

OS: Windows 7
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz
Memory: 7.0 GB free
Hard Disk Space: 356.1 GB free
Video Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family (THIS DOESN'T MEET REQUIREMENTS)
Sound: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

The only thing that does not meet requirements is the video card. I was wondering if I should upgrade my video card, and how much it would cost. I have a decent laptop with a good amount of memory.

Recommendations? Suggestions?

Thanks.
2GB is required, and I have 7GB @ whoever mentioned it.

Answer
Sorry to tell you, but you can not upgrade the video in a laptop, unless it was made for gaming. If you want a computer for gaming, that can be updated you need to invest in a desktop pc

should i overclock this laptop?

Nick

i have an acer aspire 4743z-4861
it's prety new, i got it last month (september 2011), but it's a bargain brand laptop and i do alot of online gaming. i was wondering if it would be worth the risk to try and overclock the processor.
specs: Intel pentium cpu p620 2.13 ghz
4gb DDR3 Memory
intel hd graphics (shitty i know)
windows 7 os

i haven't had any problems with overheating yet, in fact the thing almost never gets warm, but i haven't ran any official tests on the core temp yet so i rely can't clarify that.
let me know what you think, if anyone has actually overclocked an acer aspire with similar specs i'de be happy to hear the results.

Answer
weak cpu. no point in overclocking since you won't notice much difference, even if you can figure out a way to overclock it.

I am looking for a reasonably priced one it possible; I do know gaming laptops are more pricy that most. I'd prefer to not spend more than $1500 on one, but if need be I am willing. If you know f a good one cheaper than that that's better!

There are other models that come instead with a 1366x768 display, but those models are not recommended unless you need the larger text. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to have very poor image quality due to low contrast.
- Click the green "Activate eCoupon" button in the cart.
- Note: the GTX 660M is not significantly faster than the GT 650M.

Note: Another answer here recommended the "ASUS N56VZ-ES71". This model is not a good option, because it comes with a 15.6" 1366x768 display. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to have very poor image quality due to low contrast. It also has the slower GDDR3 version of the GT 650M instead of the GDDR5 version, but it's still a decent GPU.

The N56VZ is a good option if you buy the N56VZ-RB71 which comes with a 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display, but the N56VZ-ES71 is a bad option.

Does turning on the backlit keyboard affect my laptop's performance?

Richard

Also does having a higher resolution screen affect performance compared to a previous generation laptop with lower reaolution? If so, is it for better or for worse? And by how much?

I'm asking bevause the lenovo Y570 doesn't have backlit keyboards and has a lower resolution screen, while the upcoming Y580 has backlit keyboard and 1080 full hd capability. I know with backlit keyboards you can change the settings to turn it off, but I just want to know if having it on affects performance.

Thank you!

Answer
DOES THE BACKLIT KEYBOARD AFFECT PERFORMANCE?
No. It doesn't really affect performance, but it does drain battery life more. You can always turn it off though. At most it will slow down when running critically low on battery, but otherwise definatey NOT.

DOES A 1080P SCREEN MAKE IT SLOWER?
In a way, yes. It has to render more, and especially in gaming, if you put it in 1080P, it will lag A LOT MORE than less. For example 1920x1080 is MUCH more pixels to render than 1600x900 or 1333x800. However, you can always change the game settings or the resolution in Control Panel or the in game settings, but it will look disorted.

You may find MAYBE 5% slowdown in most tasks, but around 100% slower in gaming. Remember, you can always change the resolution in games, but doesn't look that good.

1080P is generally worth it in larger displays or when you want to fit more on your screen (Photoshop, Programming etc..).

Hope this helps :)

What should I ask for, for Christmas?

Danielle

Hello all of the people reading this! So I'm a 14 year old girl (Turning 15 in late March 2013 if that helps.) and I need to already make a list of what I want. My mom has to work an awful lot during November-December so she will begin shopping when she gets back from her trip, for her work, around mid-October.

So now she's been asking for lists of what we would like, and I am clueless. I mean, I have a lot of nice stuff already so it's hard to say. A list of what I have- a television, a kindle fire (I don't want the Ipad- I read books often, the kindle is just perfect.) and a computer of my own (I got it for school and games. Online schooling.)

And I don't look forward to replacing any of this anytime soon, so don't mention a television, computer OR laptop, or a tablet.

Of course I'll ask for clothes or boots, but that is all I can think of for now. I live in a warmer state (But I think it will get a bit chilly this year- it's already in the 70's at night.)

I like to bake, but only during Christmas season really, and my mom buys us new pajamas and we open them on Christmas Eve so..

Comment to your hearts content and I will be back after helping out some other people on this section- Thank you! :)
Haha, nice car but I'm not allowed to drive until I'm 18..

Answer
when I was your age I asked for a guitar, I now want a keyboard :) I really like reading too so maybe some money for ebooks? Have you read the Uglies series? I read that when I was younger and I still love it now. Maybe ask for an experience gift card, those are neat. Are you into video games? I like the Nintendo DSi it has a lot of old school games for it. There's also some cool stores like Toms and Jatalo where when you buy shoes, a backpack, or bracelets it donates textbooks and shoes to kids in need.

I'm looking for a gaming laptop that's around $1200 or less, preferably something in the Sager or Alienware line but anything that's good is fine, and maybe something that wont be boiling hot after a couple hours of gameplay would be good :).

Answer
Aliewnare laptops are the best gaming laptops. You can take that from me because I did many reviews on the Alienware line of gaming laptops. Any model from Alienware would do but I believe $1200 is not enough since Alienware laptops are so expensive. But if you could spare extra cash, that shouldn't be a problem.

Another good gaming laptop brand would be from Dell. The Dell XPS series are ideal gaming laptops and your $1200 price tag covers a variety of different models.

Toshiba is another good brand which serves for both business and gaming. I prefer the Toshiba Qosmio which is a monster for its wicked sound system and unbelievable performance. But it is a little expensive. The Toshiba Portege should cover your cost.

I am looking for a cheap gaming laptop under $400 that can handle the games released out lately?

I am looking for a cheap gaming laptop under $400 and can be bought at a canadian best buy in Ontario, Windsor. I am looking for something with an intel processor, a built in graphics card and atleast 4GB of memory. It doesn,t have to be able to play everything at max graphics. I really want to hear other people's opinions

Answer
Sorry, there aren't many. i looked for days to find one before, they are just not good enough. the best you can probably get is the Hp probook 4525. it has HD Graphics, i think 2-4 gb of RAM (Memory) but you can fit up to 8GB. it has an AMD processor BUT, its really good. i used it for a while. i know intel is better, but this is the best you can get for now until you can get a high quality Gaming pc. it is around $400- 500 i use the Dell Studio XPS 1640, it is $1200 and really good.

Answer
When looking to purchase a cheap/budget laptop/notebook it is always a good idea to do as much research as possible so as to ensure you get the best possible deal.

I personally recommend you take a look at the following Acer laptops

I am looking for a laptop for under $800 that render videos in sony vegas pro 2011 faster such as gameplay? Also i would want to be able to play roms and stream with manycam smoothly.

Also I am wondering what is the difference between AMD and Intel possessors

.

Answer
the diference is mostly price.

With todays technology, I think a quadcore AMD/Intel CPU is far more then ample for everything that a CPU was designed to handle.

Right now its all about the GPU, the faster the GPU the better, as CPU's are already at that stage where taking them further isnt really worth it, they are already taking silicon to the breaking point.

AMD will now focus on something called APU's, something totally new where a CPU is both a CPU and a GPU, AMD also owns ATi, for 3 years now considered the best GPU manufacturer hands down.

If you are looking into only gaming and only gaming, Nvidia excels in that particular ring, but not by much and their chips both have a very long history of running extremely hot and failed like fly's, but they are gaming GPU's definitely nothing to forget about if that's your thing.

I would recommend the latest HP Envy 14, top notch everything, excellent quality and performance for its size and class.

I want something with about 1TB of storage, at least 6 gigs of RAM, and I want a computer that is good for downloading things fast and effectively. I'd like some extra features but these are the main ones I want. I need a computer that is about $1000.

Answer
You can build a killer rig yourself for that much. Try this setup-
Mobo-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131367
CPU-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103650
RAM(x2)-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148287
GPU-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150332
HDD-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284
PSU-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817702010
Case-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042&Tpk=Antec%20300
Optical drive-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136152
OS(if you want one)-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116488
Your subtotal here is $990. You will be about $1,030 with shipping, and about $975 after rebates. This rig is an excellent value for what you get, and this will do everything you could ever want it to do, except for gaming which you didn't mention. The fast downloads depends on your internet, not the computer. I suggest you use the Windows 7 Release Client 1(Google it to download from Microsoft) for free. It is an excellent OS, and it will work until March 1, 2010, plenty of time to get something else. Although, if you are not comfortable doing that, then I have included a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. As for future proofing this computer, you will not to upgrade for a while, but when you need to, the PSU has enough power for another GPU in SLI, the mobo supports all the AM3 CPU's, and you can add another 8GB of RAM for a total of 16GB.
EDIT: DO NOT GET A MAC! For $1,000, here is what you get, the Mac mini, a 2.0Ghz laptop CPU, 1GB of slow RAM, a 120GB HDD, and junky graphics. PC's are far most cost effective, and they overall a much better than Macs. You only need an appointment to fix your computer since it breaks. My PC has never had problems. Most Mac uses couldn't tell an Ethernet port from a USB port. I find that generally PC users know not to download sketchy things since they don't think their computer is immune to viruses.

Answer
About a 2.5/10. Ignore every adjective and descriptive word except the true specifications.
2nd Gen Intel® Core i3-2330M processor> downlevel i3 is above the lowest and so that moved it from 1 to 2
4GB DDR3 memory - In the USA, only the cheapest laptops have less DRAM
DVD±RW/CD-RW drive - almost all of them do when 14" and higher and not ultrabooks.
14" high-definition LED display - ALL displays are high def and 14" costs a little more but is only better if the laptop is thin and light.
500GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm) - base level HDD, above the minimum 320GB 5400
times.
Intel® HD Graphics 3000 - not at gaming level, Intel even now has Intel 4000 on the newer level CPUs. Although not the lowest, it is not great graphics.
Built-in 1.0MP high-definition webcam - a little better than the 0.3mp.
Bluetooth interface - moves it above 2/10 towards 3.
Built-in 10/100 Ethernet LAN - puts it back at 2.5 since it is not gigabit ethernet for faster connection when directly wired to ethernet (non-wireless.
5 lbs. and measures just 1.2" - this is neither thin nor light for a 14" display. It is average.
Just about every laptop sold has these features.
The Dell brand is a minus assuring you have not reached a 3/10 rating on it.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
Definitely between a 2 and a 3 out of 10.

Here is a 3/10 at its best price of $450:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310634
lenovo IdeaPad G580 (59344054) Notebook Intel Core i5 3210M(2.50GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 500GB HDD DVD±R/RW Intel HD Graphics 4000
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
CPU improved 53%. Graphics GPU improved 60%
Does not seem to have bluetooth, and is still 10/100 ethernet and is a lower res web cam and is 13.35" x 9.06" x 1.33" at 5.7 pounds, the much stronger performance puts it 1/2 point above the Dell.

This $483 is well above the Dell at a 3.5/10 or better. With upgrades, can move it up the scale.
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=37&Code=E430_BASIC_SAP&category_id=77160E70986F3A542955F35F555662EF#.ULeGoKxX2So'
Has the Intel 4000, 44% stronger CPU than the Dell, the better Thinkpad Lenovo brand, lighter in weight, fingerprint reader, pointing stick and touchpad, can be custom upgraded at reasonable prices.
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087¤t-category-id=77160E70986F3A542955F35F555662EF#.ULeGWaxX2So
http://shop.lenovo.com/products/us/tech-specs/laptop/thinkpad/edge-series/e430/

So, the system you show is about $425 value in a range of pricing in laptops from $300 to $2500.
If the price is under $425, it is an OK price.
The scale I use is based on the laptop's value in a competitive market of equivalent best value in the price range:
10 is $1300 and higher.
9 is $900 to $1300
8 is the $750 to $900 range
7 is $650 to $750
6 is $600 to $650
5 is $550 to $600
4 is $500 to $550
3 is $450 to $500
2 is $400 to $450
1 is the under $300-$400 laptop set, all of which are usually cheaply made for basic video functions.
On this scale, the Dell you show is 2.5.

I use my computer a lot and my older computer that I am using at the moment is failing to meet my requirements. I heard that MSI is a really good brand so what is a good gaming laptop. I have around 500-800 dollars right know but I most likely will be able to have a budge between 800-1000 maybe 1100. Tips on how to make this money as a teen would be nice to. Tman

I am buying a gaming laptop, and I was wondering how long these specs will last me, and if I will be able to run games like call of duty modern warfare 2 and crysis. The specs are

intel core i3 2.26 ghz processor
nvidia 260m 1gb graphics card
4 gigs of ram
windows 7

will this run games like crysis and call of duty modern warfare 2? if not what needs to be upgraded?

Answer
Its alright. Another question I'd ask about it is if the hard drive is 5400RPM or 7200RPM. Laptop drives normally come 5400, which is obviously slower than the 7200RPM. Where this effects performance is the loading of texture files from the hard drive (background graphics in games). Without seeing further specs on the laptop its hard to generate a good opinion of it. If the Nvidia mobile chipset it has is GTX and in add-on form its great. If its integrated and drawing from the 4 gbs of memory, not so much. All and all I advise people to try to stick with desktops for gaming. Easier to upgrade when games start demanding more, and they can be built small for hauling over to lan parties as well. Lot less heat issues with gaming desktops compared to laptops as well. Hope this was helpful!

Can you modify a gaming laptop the same way you can a desktop?

It's true

I know nothing about PC's, and I'm thinking about getting a gaming laptop as opposed to a desktop. Mainly because I can take it with me. That being said, can I modify it just as easily as I could a desktop? And are the parts more expensive?

Answer
It's no where near as easy to modify a laptop as compared to a desktop. But it is possible, albeit extremely limited. However, seeing as you know nothing about PCs I wouldn't recommend it anyway. RAM and Hard Drives are still very easy to upgrade in a laptop, somethings more-so than a desktop, but aside from that, it's a tricky business. If you're thinking about getting a laptop for gaming you'll need to get something that will stay current for a few years. I always recommend ASUS, simply because they make strong, reliable, and affordable machines. In fact, consider taking a look at ASUS's G75 series of gaming notebooks.

Those are the main things I would be using the laptop for. If you have any suggestions, I welcome them. I want to stay as low budget as possible.

I got a laptop just recently, but I had no knowledge of graphics cards and games and all that. I want to be able to play games on my laptop (dell inspirion 1420) but the graphics card is c**p. Is it possible to upgrade to a better graphics card. Is it too late. I got my laptop from best buy.

Answer
You most likely have Intel integrated graphics (probably the X3100) which is part of the northbridge of the i945GM chipset.

It is soldered onto the motherboard and there isn't a slot to put a better graphics chip in.

The only way you'll be able to upgrade the graphics is to buy a new laptop.

I want a laptop that will run games on it. I also need the laptop to do basic things like run word and browse the internet. What brands/ specs would i need for a laptop like this? Intel or AMD? What kind of graphics card?

Answer
depending on budget???

alienware or dell xps for top gaming specs,

otherwise for a more affordable option try toshiba?

intel i5 or i7

and graphics card should either be nvidia or ati radeon with at least 1gb of dedicated graphics ram,

also go for a processor with over 2ghz processor speed and 4gb or more of ram,

affordable option would be a toshiba SATELLITE A660

but here is thei gaming range: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/generic/home-computing-gaming-multimedia-laptops/

Is there a way to get over a fear of flying?

suzeb109

I have a total phobia about heights in general and flying in particular. I can't even get on a ladder without being able to hold onto something else. I get dizzy and nauseated when I have a seat that is too high up in a stadium with the vertical seating such as the United Center in Chicago. I really want to get over the fear of flying. My husband travels frequently for business to Europe and Japan and he really wants me to go with him.

Answer
First off, try not to worry or be nervous. I know that seems hard not to, but the more you worry and the more nervous you are, the scarier it'll be. I believe that knowledge is key, and once you know the procedure it'll be a lot less scarier for you. (Since your husband is a frequent flyer, I'll leave out all the details about what to bring and how to navigate an airport.)

If you are that scared of heights, try to book an isle seat so you don't have to look out the window.

When you taxi, you barely feel the plane move at all. At this point the cabin crew will tell you all you need to know about what to do in case of emergencies and such. They will do a demonstration or show a video of where the exits are, how to fasten your seatbelt, when portable electronics can and can't be used, etc. The captain will come on and give a little speech about the flight and what to expect - something about how long it will take until you take-off, what to expect weather wise in your destination city, and how long the flight should take.

When the plane prepares for liftoff, it starts to go really fast down the runway, and then within 45 seconds you are up in the air. Things may seem a little wobbly at first, but that's just because of moving through the different altitudes. Your ears will pop as you climb through the altitudes also. (chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure.)

Once you are in the air, things will feel smooth. You will hear the humm of the engines, but that's normal, nothing to worry about. I actually find it relaxing. If there is turbulence, you might feel the plane wobble a little bit, but remember, planes are designed to withstand this, so take a deep breath and try not to think about it. After a few minutes, you will hear a ding. This is the captain letting the flight attendants know that the plane has reached 10,000 feet. At this point, the rate of ascent will decrease. You will also get an announcement that it's OK to use portable electronic devices at this time.

When you are approaching landing, your ears will pop as you descend through the altitudes (remember: chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure). You will feel the plane slow down and the cabin crew will prepare you for landing. As you get close to your destination, the captain will come back on and tell you how much longer until you land, and what the weather is like. When the plane touches down it kind of feels like a short jolt, and then you hear them cut the engines off and the plane slows down pretty fast.

From there, the plane will taxi to either the gate or the designation where a bus will pick you up. You wait for the plane to decompressurize a few moments before they start letting the passengers out. That was your flight.

To entertain yourself:
- Bring along a few book, magazines, puzzles (such as crosswords or Sodoku if you like those).
- Bring along an iPod, MP3 player, or CD player to listen to music.
- A laptop is good to have as you can play games on it, connect to the internet, and get any work done that you may have. (You have to have a WIFI card in your laptop and the airline will charge you to connect to the internet)
- Try talking to the people next to you. Sometime you will meet some really interesting people, and forge friendships.

If you are curious as to what it looks like from up there (you can see it while safely on the ground before being up in the air), here are some pictures of the last time I flew in the cockpit with my husband. Maybe seeing the pilots work and remembering that they have families will help you.

I don't want a high tier gaming laptop, but I would like a computer that I could use that could run games like Team Fortress 2, Amnesia, and Left 4 Dead 2 at 30+ frames a second with or without lowering resolution.

Is it worth waiting for next gen processors/laptops or just buy one now?

Kamil

I've heard rumors of some "Haswell" processors by Intel to debut spring 2013, so I'm debating whether to wait for the new technology or just buy a laptop now. I'm planning on getting a light-gaming laptop, possibly a Lenovo Z580 (with the NVidia GeForce 640m). Need some advice, 10 points for best answer!
Or even next gen graphic cards, any changes to ssds, etc.

Answer
There is always going to be new technology. For example, if you didn't have the cash to buy windows 7 when it came out, and bought one around this time, you'd find windows 8 already stepped in. My advice is to buy a laptop now, with strong capacities and good processors. Your lenovo sounds okay. As with any computer, take care of it and it will last. If you buy a computer with good specs, it will at least last you a few years. But this is just my opinion. If you like sparkly fancy stuff that just came out and has no reviews, wait. :)

...

That sounded incredibly biased, didn't it? Sorry.
