I'm planning on purchasing this laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231002&RandomID=715531745418422020130808133649 in a bit. It's a gaming laptop, but I'm purchasing it also for note-taking when I start college this fall. It's refurbished, but the new batteries last just as long. I'm not sure if it's going to last 2 hours 35 minutes while playing games, or if it will last longer when just using Microsoft Word, etc. I was wondering if anyone out there has this laptop and is willing to give me some insight on this issue? Or maybe if you own a similar laptop with the 2.5 hour estimated battery life, and can let me know if that holds true? Thanks!

Answer
Pretty much what Fred said. The estimated battery life they give you is when the computer is running at bare minimum. Not too many background services, very light work like reading news online, low power settings, etc. (Not all laptops are rated the same way but generally when running the minimum).

If you're gaming, expect that estimated battery life to drop significantly. I lost an hour when gaming since it requires a lot of power to keep that game running smoothly. I don't have the same laptop but expect a drop in battery life when playing games. About 30 minutes+ drop for games like Skyrim or Battlefield 3. Browser games like Tetris or maybe just Windows game, like Solitaire, will probably only drop somewhere insignificant like 5 minutes, my guess.

If you're using Microsoft word or whatever light on resources for a computer then you're fine. Just expect 2 hours at most as a safety net. Lower power settings like brightness, hard drive activity, antivirus to gamemode if you can, etc.

What's a good gaming laptop at an affordable price?

Andrew Dut

I'm looking for a good gaming laptop that's not to pricey I don't want to go over $1000 and I don't want it to get outdated in like 5 years. I'd be using it strictly to play "Star Wars the Old Republic". So I'd need a pretty good graphics card and good ram doing at least 6 gb. I would also like to use it for college and homework which isn't a problem.

Answer
It will be Lenovo Ideapad Y470.Because it has:

Intel i7-2630 @ 2.0ghz x 4 cores
nvidia gt555m 2gb
8gb ram
750gb HDD
Blu-Ray combo plus DVD Super Multi Double-Layer Drive
Windows 7 Home Premium

and the price is only 900 USD

I know ASUS and Alienware are supposed to be good, but lately Ive been hearing Alienware is not that great anymore and ASUS certain parts break down pretty fast and their customer service is bad. Are there any good ASUS or Alienwares out now? in the 1,500-1,600 or less range.

Can some people name some good gaming laptops as well as brands, I keep coming across some but then they'll be some sort of error with them.

Memory 8 GB or more with ability to upgrade
Hard drive 750 GB or more
CPU i7 3r d gen.
Graphics Card 2-3 GB or more
Windows
Display 15-17 inch etc.

Although i want a gaming computer i wont be gaming on it much, I just want a gaming computer because they tend to have more memory, and hard drive space etc.

thanks
Thank you both..Alex i had checked that laptop out and i read reviews about freezing and touch pad issues...have you experienced any issues with that? and what yr is your ASUS? are there any others you would recommend?
Also anymore suggestions are appreciated thanks

Answer
The most important factor of a gaming laptop is the graphics processor. The stronger the graphics, the better the gaming unless particularly slowed by the CPU or a ram shortage or other factors.
Video editing needs a lot of ram and a faster CPU. Stronger CPUs and graphics power take more battery power, so if they still have a standard 6 cell lithium ion, a faster laptop has a shorter battery life.
Weight is also a factor in the portability, and many people are more interested in the portability. You get a much more powerful desktop PC with a bigger monitor at the same price as a gaming laptop.
For brand quality and reliability in general, I use the customer survey published annually by PC World magazine. December 2011 is the latest, with this year due out soon.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
Although Macbooks are known as more reliable, their price to performance is terrible. They cost a lot for the CPU and graphics performance level, and the OSX operating system has a smaller list of compatible software. Also, Lenovo has 3 product lines; Essential, Ideapad, and Thinkpad. Thinkpads are considered the most robust and best keyboards and have other excellent characteristics, but they do not get high level graphics because they are business systems.

Most laptops have 2 slots for DRAM. 8GB laptops are generally 2x4GB, and that is usually plenty. The graphics ram is more important to be GDDR5 instead of DDR3 type rather than how much ram. The graphics level is important, but the ram can be shared system ram as DDR3 and so having 2 GB dedicated graphics ram is only really good if it is GDDR5 ram. In DDR3, just add it to the system ram.
You can see a reported CPU and graphics score average at this site on two tabs:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

One of the bargains in the industry is the Lenovo Y580 at Lenovo.com, but shipments are now delayed and prices were increased. They were perfect during black friday sale with $900 price on what is now $1,039.20. There are a few left at resellers.
3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB GDDR5, backlit keyboard, 15.6" screen in 1080p, 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz, 1TB 5400RPM+16G SSD, Blu-ray/DVD-RW, 6 Cell Li-Polymer, 2x2 wireless, bluetooth, HD CAM, HDMI, and a good set of extra features like one button recovery. You would have to wait for delivery. The only thing some people don't like is the screen has glare of overhead or lights behind you, but it has an extra wide color gamat with more accurate reproduction. In stock at Newegg for $1110 is DVDRW instead of bluray and a 750GB with 16GB acceleration SSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310661

The only manufacturers of laptops selling under their own name is Asus and MSI. Laptops are designed and produced by them and Clevo, Wistron, Quanta, Invertec, and a few other manufacturers all in China. The brands are actually just sales and service and procurement organizations doing selection of keyboards, HDDs, LCDs, and other sub-components made by other companies. Lenovo Thinkpad still has design teams some formerly of IBM and a lab for reliability testing in Japan.

At $1210 is an MSI with similar specs to the Lenovo Y580, but in a 17.3" anti-reflective screen, no SSD, and is DVDRW:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152369
You can see gaming performance here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
If not gaming heavily, there would be no need to spend more as it is mostly only moving up the graphics power. Extra ram over 8+2GB is not very important.
I show the full HD 1920x1080 resolution since you are at the price point to get it.

This is a nice choice at Amazon of a Samsung:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Series-NP700G7C-T01US-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0098O6FIU
It's only flaw is bluray and DVD player, but does not show DVD writing. It may have it, but does not state it so probably does not. The color is yellow/orange. The screen is a 17.3" extra bright 400 nit. The HD 7870M is a little better than NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M. It has a 1TB HDD. The Samsung brand is a high quality one. It is heavy at 8.4 pounds.

You can browse around, but if you like the color (see it at various sites for sale by google of the model number), and don't miss DVD writing (you can buy an external one), the Samsung is an excellent choice. Just browse around Newegg by looking at laptops sorted by price at 100 per page, and then select at left the i7, and slidebar for 1920x1080, and parameters of GB of ram and HDD. You can also check Amazon, but they are harder to search.

With the article about quality, a site that shows reported CPU and graphics power and another with gaming by GPU and the places to buy being Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, BHPhoto.com
it is just a matter of deciding what suits you.

I'm looking for a laptop, which one should i buy?

Tyler Jord

I need a laptop that i can use for my programming class and daily use. I need to be able take it to school so it can not be too fragile. I'm looking for about $600 if possible. It should be able to handle Steam and some games too. I don't want a mac.

Answer
I worked at IBM+Lenovo for a lot of years in Procurement Engineering. In only a few weeks in Y/A I've answered a lot of laptop questions and take each question as you write it.
No Mac is sensible at $600 and if you prefer a windows system. Mac's are generally the best hardware, but expensive for what you get. To make a choice you start with a couple of things. What size exactly is first. You get the most function and screen size in a 15", but they are much heavier than smaller ones.
Use two information sets:
1) Quality + reliability at the time. This is one good article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/211402/reliability_and_service_laptops.html

Many laptops fail. Many laptops overheat for not enough cooling for the performance.
2) CPU+Graphics performance. I am using http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

Decide any must-haves like maybe camera and mic for skype or video broadcast. Some have fingerprint readers or face readers. Which is more important to you, graphics (for gaming) or RAM amount and CPU speed for programming?

Typically, every selling company has one or two units on sale that will usually be the best value from them. At $600 and less including tax, those are probably the best choices.
I think HP/COMPAQ has messed up their quality and support, and overheating issues are all over this board. Acer is a re-label with little R+D. Big issue is time to get it back if sent to them for warranty. Dell USED TO BE excellent. They fell apart in quality and service, raised their prices vs competitors, and I don't think they ever earned respect back. Toshiba is generally good. Lenovo watch ratings by model - feedback important. You can't judge any opinions on a brand. Either their units failed or didn't. PC's are made cheap today. A lot fail; most reasonable to fix.

When about ready to buy within a few days, look hard and fast at what is offered. The deals keep changing. Know in advance about quality and what you want. Write down what you see and compare to another at about the same delivered price. When down to three, come back to this board and give a lot of details if you need advice.
How heavy can it be? Heavier is usually cheaper and more reliable. Bigger is cheaper with the exact same functionality. Get as much DRAM as you can, and the CPU+Graphics cannot be changed like a desktop later. What you buy is it until you buy another system.
Here is a start of a nice system for the price. Now look for better in a decent brand by the charts and surveys $529+tax
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000006043
AMD Quad-Core A6-3400M Accelerated Processor, Windows® 7 Home Premium, 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM, 320GB 5400 hard drive, AMD Radeon⢠HD graphics, DVD SuperMulti drive, 1366x768 native screen resolution, LED backlit keyboard, HDMI output, 802.11bgn wireless, Integrated webcam, Premium harman/kardon® speakers, Fusion® X2 Finish in Platinum, 6-cell, 4400 mAH battery,
Customizable: Upgrade to 500GB 7200 rpm drive for $10
Upgrade to Bluetooth and EDR internet for $25
Price $564 plus tax now. Nice for the price. Not a gaming system, but a lot of nice stuff in a decent brand.
decide about battery upgrades or other options.

Answer
Since youâve got a pretty good idea of what youâre looking for in a laptop, Iâd recommend checking out this new application from Microsoft called âLaptop Scout,â which you can find at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-laptop-scout/default.aspx. You go to the site, enter in what youâre looking for in a laptop (and your budget), and itâll point you towards some potential matches.

Using this site, you should be able to find something that matches your budget, as well as your business class and COD needs. I hope it's helpful for you!

Should I buy a macbook pro now 2011 or wait for the 2012 version?

RuddyMoua

Don't tell me to buy something else different because I want the macbook pro for school.
Is the Macbook pro 2012 version going to be faster?
What do you think about bootcamp and games?
Games like
Lower end games
DOTA
LOL

Higher end games
Starcraft 2
Diablo 3 when it comes out.

Answer
for gaming, I would be better off having a PC, preferably an Alienware because its graphics are much better and more powerful than macbook pro.

But....

If you want a macbook pro for gaming, yes you'll have to dual boot (bootcamp), the 15" and 17" are better for gaming, 15" high end 2.2Ghz has much better graphics and would strongly recommend that for its GPU speed and processor speed.

I bootcamp my macbook pro for dota allstars (game is very addicting) and as far as I can tell, its not as bad as you think. It will work almost like a PC, but it gets hot, thats my only concern ( I have a cooler pad for mine. ) My macbook is able to handle the games for hours, tested intensely over the summer.

If you want to game on macbook pro, I strongly recommend a cooler pad because your mac will get extremely hot. Keep your laptop cool so the battery will long last and so is your laptop (clean it regularly from the inside, ie clean the fan from dust)

don't wait for 2012 because it will not change much, just some software updates and thats about it. Get it now if you want to.

if you want to save money on macbook pro, buy it from internet because you can save over $200. Don't buy one from apple store, they will rip you off.

EDIT: A 15" mac will be able to handle that, your a dota fan as well? nice, I thought I was the only one.

In a laptop am i supposed to unplug the charger when the battery is full?

Jonathan I

I read that leaving it on while its fullycharged overcharges the battery witch damages it. Am i supposes to do this all the time though? Ive unpluged a lot and i feel like its going to break the charger or the laptop jack. Its a 1k asus gaming laptop so the battery is expensive! I saw one on ebay for 60 plus shipping! Would the charger break or the jack will become loose? Thanks!

Answer
keeping your laptop hooked up to the charger is a bad option as it damages the battery and reduces its life and this in comparison with a jack damage or the adapter damage which would lead to charger replacement is expensive. it doesn't makes sense that just because you think the jack will be damaged you have to keep it plugged in. the manufacturers would have thought of the plugging and unplugging of the charger so frequently and then have designed the charger. if your work requires such a long input of power and you get worried about charger and jack then you should have bought a longer battery life laptop to prevent frequent charge cycles or simply should have bought a desktop!
From the time a battery is made it is already degrading. How you handle the battery during the time you have it determines how quickly it degrades. When you keep it plugged in it generally does two things to the battery that damage it.

1. It keeps it fully charged. This might seem a bit odd, but the cells in the battery will last the longest when stored with 40% charge.
2. It causes it to become significantly hotter. Any time you turn electricity through pretty much anything you generate heat, and once a battery is full charged it is provided a 'trickle' charge which is suppose to supply any charge that the computer pulls or leaks, but this charge isn't very precise so much of it automatically becomes heat. The optimum temperature for the batteries is surprising cold, thatâs why storing it in a fridge or freezer is often recommended, while a hot car can severally damage it.

Even if you donât store your battery in the laptop while on AC, you will probably still have your battery at >95% charge. This means that only the temperature is changed, which can still be significant. If your laptop is next to a strong flow of AC itâs not going to be as effected as if its stuffed in a corner with all the heat forced to stay on the laptop. Itâs really a personal choice and unless you follow it religiously you probably wonât get a huge amount of gain.

well some also say that after the battery charges the laptop automatically switches to AC power that is from the charger or power chord and prevents any harm to the battery.i am not really sure about each and evry laptop has it but its just a point of view!!!

SUMMARY: Will it harm= NO
Will it kill the battery slowly = YES

I heard hp laptops were the best quality is this true?

Also what is the simplest way for me to get internet and have it hooked up?

Answer
Like ALL manufacturers, HP has its ups and downs so before making a final decision on ANY brand, check reviews!

Here are a few places that will help you:

Stop 01 here: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/?tag=hdr;snav
Stop 02 here: http://www.notebookreview.com/

Alas laptops in this price range make sacrifices in the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) department and MOST (including HP) use the (shared memory) Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD which is only a class 3 GPU (AKA Low-Midrange Graphics Chip).

These GPUs are considered the lower end of the Graphics Chips for users who want to play games.

New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.

And the fact that it is "shared" memory means that it steals RAM from your system that you cannot use elsewhere.

But here is a "Very good" possible choice:

Newegg: The lenovo IdeaPad Y550 (41865BU) NoteBook with the Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 (2.10GHz), 15.6" Wide XGA, 4GB Memory, 320GB HDD @ 5400rpm, Dual layer DVD Burner "AND" a 512mb (dedicated not shared) NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146584

The NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M is a dedicated memory class 2 GPU (AKA Midrange Graphics Chip)

These chips should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings.

Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings.

Less demanding (and older) games, like Fifa 08, Command & Conquer 3, or Battlefield 2142 can be played with higher detail levels.

As it is dedicated memory, you get to keep your other RAM for something else!

The GPU details are here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-130M.13789.0.html

Look at the good 10417 NVIDIA score in the 3DMark 05 benchmark compared to the paltry 1269 Intel score on the notebookcheck site.

Where can I find a gaming laptop?

lionb

I would like to buy a good laptop for gaming. I need it to be cheap in price but good quality and performance.

Answer
Cheap in price and good gaming performance don't go hand in hand !

Here is how to do more precise research to find the best one for YOU: The first step is to get information on the laptops that you are interested in and, as a second step, to search online at web stores (like Amazon or similar) or at retail shops (BestBuy, staples or similar) for the best deals on the ones you would really like to have based on your search.

This way, you get the best working laptops at the best prices.

As laptop specs change often, it is good to get non-vendor/non-partisan/non-groupie information so you should do some checking on these review/guide sites to help fine tune your search.

At each site, start by checking models and then compare them with others (or against each other) by choosing different options using boxes and drop down menus to customize the search and get what you want in your laptop ( there is even a way on some of those sites to look by inputting the price you are willing to pay to minimize the impact on your wallet ).

Your time will not be wasted (after all, you get all this from the comfort of your home) and you should find something to your liking and budget.

I am looking for an ultrabook that is cheap, light weight, sturdy, and has good graphics. Any suggestions?

best gaming laptop value 2012 on Sony Vaio Wireless Laptop
best gaming laptop value 2012 image

George M

I can not spend more than $1000 dollars. I play games so it has to be able to keep up with that in both graphics and speed. I am a student so the lighter the better but not too flimsy like the Toshiba z835. Thanks.

Answer
Most ultrabooks actually start below the $1,000 price point, so I wouldn't say you are looking for a "budget laptop". That being said, if you are looking for both good hardware, and aesthetics, unfortunately pc manufacturers suck... Here are some of the laptops which I would recommend....
1. Vizio Thin-and-Light Ultrabooks
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/14/3088097/vizio-ultrabooks-hands-on-pictures-thin-and-light#3460938
Pros: This laptop is gorgeous, and has the specs to match. Vizio, is a california based company best known for its tvs, but their first entrance into the pc market has been said to be a game changer by all tech websites. You will not find a better value than this vizio.
Cons: This is the company's first laptop. (But everyone has said that this should not be held against the company, since everyone has a first)

2. Asus Zenbook UX 31
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/21/asus-zenbook-ux31-review/
This laptop is slightly about your price-point, but trust me that you will not be disappointed by the quality. The engadget said that the touch pad driver was messed up, but I believe that it has since been fixed. Even if it hasn't when you upgrade to Win 8, this should be fixed.

This brings me to my last point. If you can wait, you should hold off until October. Windows 8 is coming out, and is radically different from Win 7. Even if you don't want to by 8, you will still be able to buy the Win 7 configured laptops at a huge discount.

Best of luck!

What processor is better AMD trinity or Intel Ivy bridge ?

alberto

I will be using it for school, light to medium gaming, video editing, its ether between the i5 or the A10
The i5 3rd gen ivy bridge cpu with 8gb ram and 750gb storage
AMD trinity apu quadcore A10-4600m with 6gb ram 640gb storage
I5-3210m Intel

Answer
Don't listen to the AMD fanatic, dedicated cpu with dedicated graphics dominates performance at any price point and has been the only logical choice for laptops to desk tops for many many years. Integrated graphics sucks and has a near zero upgrade path. For a non gaming solution Ivy is the best, for a gamer Sandy or Ivy plus a discrete GPU is best.

The Intel Trigate 22nm Ivy is by far the better CPU, with a OK GPU, and when needed just add a mid to high end GPU for true DX11 gaming that Trinity can NOT do because its CPU is way too lame to DX11 game.

Performance Analysis
With the addition of numbers for the Intel Core i3-2100 and Core i5-2400 in some of our benchmarks, it's plain to see that even with a price cut, the FX-8120 struggles in most of our tests. In very multi-threaded tests such as Cinebench and WPrime, it just about manages to hold its own against the similarly-priced Intel Core i5-2400 - slightly ahead in WPrime, a little behind in Cinebench and noticeably faster than the cheaper Core i3-2100. The Core i5-3570K is much faster in both tests, but then it costs around £30 more.

Our image editing test was a real let down with the FX-8120. It came bottom of the graph, being trounced by a staggering 500 points by the Core i3-2100 - a CPU that costs just £90. Even the ageing AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition was considerably faster while the similarly priced Intel Core i5-2400 was nearly twice as fast. Clearly, if you do any amount of photo editing, the AMD FX-8120 represents particularly poor value.

With eight cores at its disposal, you'd think the FX-8120 might stand a good chance in our video encoding test. Sadly this wasn't to be and its score of 2,150 was over 400 points short of the Core i5-2400. Thankfully for the FX-8120, the Core i3-2100 was noticeably slower, with its two physical and two virtual cores not able to keep up.

Everything started to fall away from the FX-8120 again in our multi-tasking test, where it was yet again at the bottom of the pile, coming 100 points short of the much cheaper Core i3-2100, while the Core i5-2400 was nearly 50% faster - pretty damning result. Overall, it was no surprise to see the FX-8120 rock bottom, bettered by the Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition and Core i3-2100 and trounced by the Core i5-2400.

Our game test lacks data for the two Sandy Bridge CPUs as we tested these some time ago, however, with the Intel Core i5-3570K retailing for just £30-40 more, it's clear from our results that the FX-8120 isn't a great buy for games either. The Intel CPU was 60 per cent faster in Arma II while costing around 30 per cent more - not a bad rate of return if you can afford the extra layout.

Conclusion,
Sadly, its more of the same bad news for AMD or anyone with a Socket AM3+ motherboard looking for a decent CPU for around the £150 mark. The FX-8120 just isn't a good choice when it comes to the kind of applications we run on our PCs. It's regularly outpaced by far cheaper Intel dual-core CPUs, while the similarly-priced Intel Core i5-2400 is significantly faster in many of our tests. As it stands, the FX-8120 will have to be a lot cheaper for it to be worth considering over an equivalently-priced Intel setup, while owners of the Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition can rest assured that

What is a decent gaming laptop brand?

Morgan

So I'm looking for a gaming laptop brand or laptop that is affordable but not cheap. I want to play Minecraft and POSSIBLY Battlefield 3 without any lag issues. I'm not talking about high specs and stuff, but running smoothly. Also, is it possible to change graphics cards on laptops? Thanks

Answer
Asus g55 (15") or g75 (17") laptops are great or Alienware m18x. You can't change the graphics card. They will play any game on medium graphics easily and most on high without lag.

For $1000 I can buy a Lenovo Ideapad with GT 750M cards in SLI, meanwhile a 15 inch macbook pro with only a single GT 650M costs almost 1k more. For that price the macbook pro should have a much more powerful GPU.

Answer
Items of a company are generally priced to maximize profit for the company. There is a marketing tool that pricing something high has people believing it is of better quality and performance because people think why would anyone be buying it at that price. However, just as very expensive designer goods are bought for the label. Apple has a cult following. The OSX system is easier to use but less versatile and far less freeware software and paid good software available. They throw in midgrade software for audio and video editing. It has a very good battery. The audio codec is a little better. The LCD is good quality. The CPU number is not shown by Apple. You find it here instead:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro
The actual quality and performance are pretty good, but they are terrible at the price point.
MacBooks being OSX have limited gaming titles anyway, so it takes a Windows dual boot or shell to do gaming. It is also shown that after the first couple of years, their failure rates are average to average plus in the industry.
http://www.rescuecom.com/news-press-releases/computer-reliability-report-2013-Q2.aspx
Keep in mind that most brands also sell low quality cheap laptops and they fail far more often. The better products are at least comparable to Apple over 3 to 5 years.
A squaretrade.com detailed study in 2009 shows Apple excels in reliability while they are under warranty then drops fast. The MacBooks are susceptible to liquid damage and handling damage specifically excluded from the warranty.
The Apple MacBooks take a great laptop skin using the glowing Apple.
Overall, MacBooks are for people that either care little about the price, or are absorbed into the cult, or are too simple minded to operate a Windows PC.
Each company chooses a target market. Lenovo chose North America for special pricing on the Y series gaming laptops for the sale price units. Samsung has excellent pricing in India across their products. HP prices well for a customized laptop where you only want one feature and leave the rest out; such as 1080p but skip backlit keyboard, bluetooth, and every other upgrade.
You will find in general that the Y series Ideapads are good in quality but not tops, because they are trying to keep the price as an affordable value. They are better than Inspirons, Satellites, Pavilions, Acer-Gateway anything, HP_Compaq. You may need a cooling pad. The Y510p can get a graphics card in the ultrabay replacing the DVDRW. That makes GT 750M SLI.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
very impressive for the price. They do not sell the module right away as a separate upgrade unless buying it installed. Along with the module they upgrade the AC-DC brick. And ALWAYS get 1080p if at all possible as affordable.

Which is the lowest priced laptop that can run GTA 5 ? .?

Answer
GTA V is not confirmed on PC platform. It's coming out on PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms on September 17, 2013

Since, you're from India, you can pre-order GTA V for
PS3: http://www.flipkart.com/grand-theft-auto-v/p/itmdmdt26bushsrh?pid=AVMDF2BYAVZDHCK2&affid=genoaibibo&ref=e056dcb7-b51a-46e9-a28f-84c6d730b9f4
or Xbox 360: http://www.flipkart.com/grand-theft-auto-v/p/itmdmdt26bushsrh?pid=AVMDF2BY6HZVYERR&affid=genoaibibo&ref=482b9f3b-b102-438b-85dd-cf05d6dd1be4
and then purchase
PS3 console: http://www.flipkart.com/sony-ps3-500-gb/p/itmdkf7cxkdqwvz2?pid=GMCDEUF2VF6F3NHV&affid=genoaibibo&ref=ee8f9b7d-af4d-433b-8800-57d0b78dceda
or Xbox 360 console: http://www.flipkart.com/combo-microsoft-x-box-360-4-gb-slim/p/itmczc2jkztna7qv?pid=BUNDGA4AYHZ9YMBU&affid=genoaibibo&ref=f9ebf73a-da80-49fd-82d4-1d5fa507f052

For Xbox 360, GTA V will ship on two discs; Disc 1 for one-time mandatory install and Disc 2 for playing the game. This initial install will require an Xbox 360 Hard Drive or an external 16GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space
For PS3, the game ships on one disc and will install content as soon as you insert the game. The install is roughly 8GB

What brand of gaming laptop is most reliable?

best gaming laptop design on Laptop Computer Planet - Gaming Laptops
best gaming laptop design image

Bear

I'm looking into buying a gaming laptop, and I've narrowed the search down to :
-Alienware
-iBuypower
-Asus
-Origin
First, I'm wondering if there are any other brand names out there that could hold a candle to these. if so let me know in the response.
Next, I'm looking at getting a laptop with these stats:
i7 processor
1gb video mem
8-18 gb ram
500gb+ 7200 rpm hard drive, possibly a SSD.

Lastly, I'm aware I can create my own computer for possibly a cheaper price, I'd rather not go through that hassle because I'm technologically impaired. Thank you for any useful input in advance!

Answer
I actually don't believe that those are the best, but you may disagree with me. I think MSI offers great gaming laptops. They are tough, are designed well, and also very powerful.

Also, I'm just going to put it out there that if you're not MLG or a very serious gamer, you probably don't need a gaming laptop. There are very powerful laptops out there with the specifications that you want, that are much thinner, much better designed, and are more reliable. The MacBook Pro with Retina display meets all of your standards. (MBP retina is a mac though, you probably want a PC for gaming). HP, Lenovo, and Samsung also have great powerful computers.

Sorry for actually widening the range of laptops for you to search from, but I really don't believe that gaming laptops are necessary. I hope it helped though! :)

What gaming laptop should I get to play any game maxed out at 1080p @40+fps? Price don't matter?

Golden

Hi, I am planning to get a decent gaming laptop which will play all the latest games maxed out above 30 or 40 fps but I don't know which one to get. Pls suggest

Answer
If price does not matter than go for ASUS G75VX-TS72 which has the price of $1500. It has good features and also designed specially for gaming as well. So you can go for it if you want to play every type of game.

It has really good features which include:

Intel CoreTM i7-3630QM Quad Core Processor (6M Cache, 2.40GHz - 3.40 GHz) 45W which is really powerful and efficient. It has Operating System of Windows 8 x64. It has Optical Drive of Blu-Ray Player SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW Dual Layer. It has RAM of 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz and Hard Drive of 750GB 7200rpm which is really huge storage. So overall it is really good and efficient laptop which is perfect for gaming.

For further details I would like you to see the comment from an actual user which will explain that how it actually performs:

What HD graphics card should be recommended for my laptop?

best gaming laptop graphics card 2010 image

Victor

I have an old 2010 toshiba laptop. I was wondering what HD graphics card should be recommended. My HD graphics is a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200. It's DAC type is 400MHz. and it's display mode is 1600 x 900. I can still play games like TF2 and Half Life with little lag. But when I tried to play games on Steam like Left for Dead 2 or Gotham City Imposters, it lagged a lot. I'm not looking for the best HD graphics card, just one that's pretty decent and could still allow me to play brand new games on my laptop.

Answer
Just so we are clear, you are looking to buy a replacement laptop with an upgraded graphics card (better than what you currently have) so you can play some of the newer games.

The reason that I assume you want to buy a new laptop is because you (for the most part) cannot upgrade or replace the video card thatâs in a laptop. Some of the gamming laptops will allow you to replace the video cards (EG Sager, Asus, MSI, FalconNorthwest) but even then they only make the graphics cards for a few generations and the upgrades a very minimal when compared to the device that was originally in the system.

With that being said, if you are looking for a new laptop that has a better Graphics Card, you need to first determine how much you want to spend.. Gaming laptops start at about $1,100 (USD) and keep going up. If you want a gamming laptop then I recommend looking on NewEgg.com just do a search for âgaming laptopâ you will get a number of great products to pick from.

The main thing is to know how much you are going to spend.
Here is a list of Good graphics cards, in list by price that you can expect to pay for a laptop that has the card. (Amount in US Dollars)

$500-700
Radeon HD 7730M
Radeon HD 7550M
Radeon HD 6470M
GeForce GT 610M
GeForce GT 630M

$700-900
GeForce GT 630M
GeForce GT 635M
GeForce GT 660M
Radeon HD 7570M

$1,000+
GeForce GT 670M
GeForce GT 680M
Radeon HD 7870M

I hope this helps.

How do I find out what kind of Graphics Card I need for my computer?

SuperStar4

I am running a nongaming Laptop (Acer Aspire 7741Z, to be specific). Acer, bless their fucking souls, decided to make their very own hardware for the intel graphics! This same hardware hasn't recieved any updates since late 2010. All new games can run on my computer, at least they would be able too. If it weren't for my graphics card, most games I can run perfectly fine. How can I check what type of card I need? I just need to know this information, I have a very tech savvy friend that is going to help me choose the best card from my price range and possible cards that I can use. Thanks
Let me go ahead and clarify- I can't update it, because Acer no longer puts out updates for this card. I am also running on Windows 7. Thanks again

Answer
Thats easy. You've got a laptop and you CAN'T put a different card in it to begin with. You want better graphics, you buy a new laptop. End of story.

All I really need is a laptop that can handle Microsoft office (PowerPoint, Word, etc.) and Bigfish games. My old Acer's battery is dying.

Answer
As you need a laptop for just basic purposes than I would not recommend you to go for fancy specs and high price because you can do all of these tasks with affordable price laptop and one of the option is Toshiba Satellite C855-S5137 which has a price of $430 with good specs.

Its specs include:

Fast and efficient Intel Core i3-3120M Processor (2.5 GHz)
Superior Multitasking performance with 4 GB DIMM RAM
Huge storage with 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
15.6-Inch Screen with Mobile Intel® HD graphics

So this is one option for which you can opt for. If you think it does not come under your requirement than you can see others as well. You ca see this list which has multiple options with affordable price:

Any good gaming laptops under 600?

Bud

I'm already building a gaming desktop, but I just want to know if there are any good gaming laptops under $600. I like the mobility of laptops, and if I can have both a gaming desktop and a laptop that would just be awesome. I've been looking a lot of places but the specs for the gpu on a lot of them just suck while they have a spectacular processor.
Like there are laptops with i7's for around 600 but have a crap GPU. I want at least an i5 for intel or a good quad core for amd with good graphics. Best answer to best find

Answer
Then opt for Dell Inspiron i17R-1316sLV because it has a good processor according to what you want. It has Intel Core i5 3210M 3.1 GHz which fairly fast enough in i5 category and it has a price of under $570. You can see the review from an actual user as well which is really helpful:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R2250VTXAVWRWP/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B009LTUB9G&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=faowiw-20

Its further specs include 6 GB DDR3 of memory which is really helpful in multitasking and it has storage of 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive. It has 17-Inch Screen with good graphics card of Intel HD Graphics 4001. Overall it is really perfect according to what you want.

You can see other options which are around $600 and also has almost the same processor. Here is a list of those:

I have been doing some research on gaming laptops that can really run through games like Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, Minecraft, MMOs, etc. The only ones that have caught my eye is the Alienware m17x and m18x, and Sager laptops.

If you can recommend some other ones I would really appreciate it.

By the way I am looking for a laptop because I will be moving around for the next couple years so I dont have time for a Desktop, and I'm looking for quality Hardware atleast under $2,500 so thanks in advance.

Answer
As a general rule of thumb, try to avoid Alienware laptops. They are the best gaming experience you will ever have, for about three hours. They they overheat and burn themselves out, leaving you with a somewhat crispy, very expensive paper weight. Try an ASUS laptop, they have several good gaming laptops.

What is a good quality gaming laptop for a good price?

NateTheGre

I play Minecraft on a tiny little netbook, and it sort of works when the render distance is tiny, graphics are fast, etc.... So I would like a better gaming laptop, but not a thousand dollar Alienware laptop or anything. I don't have that much money to spare, so if I can find a cheap laptop that runs Minecraft well, that would be great!

Answer
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834200695

There's no sense in buying a low end laptop that more than likely deliver what you pay for. Nothing. Investing in any laptop with a graphic card and a low end CPU is just asking for your money to be burned. If you really want to get rid of your wallet, I accept donations. Or, you can make a quality, sensible purchase with long lasting, quality components that will provide outstanding performance for at least 2-3 years before considering an upgrade.

My kids already have to many toys and clothes. I was thinking of getting them a laptop but hubby veto that idea.

How does new bedroom furniture sound? I could fix up their rooms (which would most likely be a better idea as I plan to sell the house next year)
We did just take a trip to Louisiana but I could take them to my Dad's Lake house.

My kids play ball and catch but not to good at sports they are only 4 yrs, 2 yrs and 5 months old

Answer
So you have an infant to a 4 year old and aren't going to do Christmas for them because "they have enough all ready". I'm sorry but I think it's a bad idea all the way around.
Taking a trip or redoing their rooms at that age is not going to be appreciated. Kids want things they can unwrap and play with not furniture they have to "keep nice" or a trip that they may never remember taking years later. Besides, if you're moving anyway, why sink all the money into redoing any room when you won't be living there and the new owner is likely to change it anyway after they move in.

Your best bit is to go through all the toys they don't play with anymore and donate them long before Christmas. If they are broke or have critical missing pieces, throw them away. Clothing, if you can't reuse it as hand me downs for your younger children and it has no sentimental value to you then donate it as well if it is free of severe wear and stains.

Buy them some new books. New clothing or PJ's for Christmas. Get some toys like an art center, something for outside rather than inside if you are over run in the house. How about new toy boxes with their names on them for their rooms to keep their personal things in? get some board games for kids that are in their age range to play together.
My son has oodles of indoor things to play with but for his birthday in March instead of telling people "don't buy him toys he has too much all ready" we just told them "outdoor toys, swim items for summer or books". Kids like things they can have and open. When they are this young it is more important to them. As for stockings you could always put in some treats, new crayons, coloring books, tub toys (throw out worn out ones that you have at home), things that can go in the car to amuse them with a tote with their name on them to keep in the car with their car toys.

A laptop at their age is a bad idea. It would end up broken and would be a waste for them at their age.

What to do on a eight hour flight and am I crazy to packing this early?

whitney p

My family just brought tickets for a flight to Germany for March like two days ago. The reason why we are going in march is because my brother is being shipped out to Afghanistan. My family also wants to see his baby daughter my niece. We got a nonstop flight to Germany for eight hours but I have no idea what do on the flight. I am bringing my laptop and The Vampire Diaries first season dvd and hopefully my new iphone 4s(sprint) which switch carriers in January. What else can I do on the plane?

Answer
Oh, Ive had 11 hour flights :)
Theyre no that bad, really.
Take a book with you, watch VD, play on the little screen (theyre usually placed on the front seat..) so there's like games, movies, and so on...
sleeping helps too!

bwm_nsd

My battery pack on my laptop lasts about 1-hour.....is this about the right time for a laptop...I need to know because I have only had this laptop since November and I need to call HP if I am not getting my recommended usage out of this laptop. I do not think an 1-hour is a good time. I have never owned a laptop so, I am asking you guys.

Answer
Sorry, HP's are junk. They are just a Compaq with a different name and color, made in China...Junk. They also have the worst service department in the world, literally.

Laptop batteries will usually last from 1.5 to 5 hours, depending upon the demand, the battery and the use. Sound burns up a lot of juice as does the DVD player so if you're watching movies or playing games an hour is about right.

You can purchase a better battery.

Good luck

What laptop brands are of great quality and last long off of the charger?

Just right

I've had this Toshiba since November 2008. It has given me numerous problems. I've never dropped it or did anything crazy to it, but it sucks quality-wise. It used to last 10 minutes off of the charger; then about 5 minutes; now it doesn't even power on without being plugged in. I'm looking for a laptop with really good quality, that can also last without being charged for a while. Your suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks.

Answer
I have spent a good bit of time recently looking for a laptop that was powerful enough to run games and still be within my budget. I have been thoroughly satisfied with my purchase Of ASUS A53SV-XE1 . The only problem that I have with it is that it is bogged down with a good bit of bloatware to start, but that is really to be expected on every computer.

Some games i was planning on
-sims
-sim city
-plenty of steam games
-aion
-guild wars
- other mmorpgs

Thanks a lot

Answer
It has integrated graphics so it will limit your gaming.

It should handle everything you listed, but "steam games" is a bit vague. Any of the more demanding games of the last year or so wont play too well.

3 things.

1) upgrade to 8GB of ram. Since it comes with 6GB, that means it has a 4GB and 2GB stick, meaning you are only running single channel ram. So upgrade to 2 matching 4GB sticks so you are running in dual channel. It not only increases overall system performance, but the increased memory bandwidth helps alot with integrated graphics performance. (also higher speed memory like ddr3-1600 whcih your cpu supports, will also add alittle more performance aswell)

2) get a notebook cooler. As your cpu does have turbo which can boost cpu and gpu clock speeds, but its based on the temps, so the lower the temps, the better performance you will get. So get a notebook cooler, play inside a cool room, and make sure to keep it free of dust build up. (get canned air)

3) since it has windows 8, get http://www.startisback.com/
It will be the best money you have EVER spent on any software ever XD
its like $3 for 2 licenses, $5 for 5, so its only like $1-$1.50/license
i just got the 5, and used 1 for laptop, desktop and gave others to friends/family.

Would a AMD Phenom 2 Dual core be good for gaming?

Shane Fish

i would like to buy a gaming laptop and my budget is 400 and less. i would like to have a quad core but those are way to much. i would like some help with this please. all i can find is computer that are in the 300s that have dual cores, and i wanted to know if those are capable of playing modern games such as Call of duty 4, and Modern warefare 2, also Battlefield BC 2 and games like that. Thank you so much.

Answer
Yes, the processor would be more than enough to play games, but you need to look at more than the processor if you plan to play games. You would also need either hybrid graphics or even better discrete graphics in order to play games. Unfortunately, until fairly recently this would set you back at least $800. There is now a better option. AMD just last month released their newest line of processors based on the new Llanos platform, they are called the A-series. Like Intel Sandy Bridge Core i chips, the A-series has the ability to change their clock speed to match the task at hand and has graphics processor fused into the cpu. The A-series has much much better graphics capabilities though. For example, the A-series is capable of playing even the most demanding games to a computer such as Crysis 2 at the games medium graphics settings just using the built in graphics. The A-series also runs 5-15 degrees cooler than the Intel chips and has better battery life. Here are a few to take a look at:

I am looking for an affordable, quality laptop that will last me 4 years. Please specify the laptop you would recommend and why. Also, I'm on a budget so a laptop under $1000 would be nice. Remember, I'm also asking what websites you would recommend to buy quality laptops at a cheaper price. (Much like when you buy furniture from a warehouse) Thank you for your help!

Answer
For sites, I would suggest:
www.newegg.com
www.mwave.com

For laptops that is affordable and that will get you through a few years, I would suggest a lower name brand like fujitsu or acer. My sister bought a HP a few weeks ago and she loves it. She paid around $650 for it at Best Buy. It only has a Celeron Processor, but all she does is do Word Documents, surf the net, and watch movies. Those laptops are good for that purpose and they will last a long time as long as you take care of them. If you want performance with a budget, get a low brand. If you just want one to surf and watch movies, get an HP or Toshiba with a Celeron. On those, just make sure you have at least 512MB of memory and probably around 60 - 80 gigs of HDD space (depending on what you plan on using it for). But if you want a laptop that will not be outdated for 4 years, your looking at twice your budget. Unless you get lucky at auctions. The one thing I suggest, whatever you decide, take the preinstalled trial software and non microsoft games that come with a new laptop, out. They usually tend to use up alot of HDD space and memory, and it usually slows down your laptop. Hopefully this can help you decide.

What's the best gaming laptop for under five hundred bucks?

Q. I'm not much of a gamer but I just want to be able to play Call of Duty and other games like that on a cheap laptop that won't lag too badly. Any ideas?
