gaming laptop?

zz

Yo, I'm getting a laptop soon, really soon. (This weekend.)

I'm looking for a good laptop for gaming and school. The most high quality game I'll probably have is Counter Strike Source or Starcraft II when it comes out.

So maybe about 80gb+ HDD 2-3gb RAM, and I'm looking for around $600-800.

Any suggestions?

Answer
There is no such thing as a gaming laptop. The parts, because they are smaller, are more expensive- a $1000 laptop won't have HALF the power of a $1000 desktop PC.

But it WOULD be better to buy ONE laptop than a laptop AND desktop PC.

$600 to $800 will not get you a gaming computer. You need a discrete graphics card (not integrated) and those come in around $1000 and up laptops.

For school you will also need portability. Overall, I'd recommend the Dell XPS M1330
-13.3" screen
-available graphics card (be sure to put this in when you customize)
-Core 2 duo processor (1.83ghz)
-2GB RAM
-160GB HDD
-Less than 4 lbs.
-$1100 w/ video card.

What's a good gaming laptop for under $800?

Mongoose

I have found a really nice laptop from Lenovo that has great feature for the price. It's called the Lenovo y580 and costs about $840.

These are it's stats:
1366x780 15.6" Screen
720p 1mp Webcam
JBL Speakers
Intel Core i7-3610QM Quad-core processor @ 2.3 Ghz.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M Graphics Card
8 GB DDR3 RAM
1 TB Hard Disk Drive
DVD-R/DVD
Full-sized Keyboard
Backlit Keys

If anyone can find a laptop that has all these stats and is cheaper or beats some of the stats (and is on par with the other ones) then I would be happy to hear about it. 1080p screen for bonus points!

Answer

What is the best laptop to buy for gaming under 800 dollars?

Gabriel F

Wanted to buy a new laptop because this one is crapping out on me. Anywho have any advice on which laptop to buy? I would like it to have a good video card because I want to be able to play current games on it like Fallout 3 or something.

Answer
I understand that you want a gaming laptop that's under $800, but under that price tag won't get you much. If you want to buy a good quality gaming laptop, I'd recommend that you should spend at least $1200. Gaming laptops are expensive because it's hard to put good graphic cards into computers. Most laptops run the graphics from the motherboard, but a separate graphic card can be rather pricey. The best brands for gaming are Alienware (Made by Dell) And Voodoo (Made by HP). with these brands, just DESKTOPS start at around $1200! For $800, you'll be able to get a good Toshiba, Dell or HP, but for sure not a gaming computer. If you want to save money and get a real gaming laptop, then build one yourself. IT takes a bit of effort and may take a bit longer, but you will still be able to save some money, and you can buy the parts separate so you'll get exactly what you want.
Overall, I'd recommend to either spend about $1200 and buy a gaming computer or about $1000 and build your own gaming computer. $800 will get you a nice laptop that can run your games, but the graphics won't be as good. So you decide, and I hope that I helped.

Happy 'top hunting!

Laptop shuts down when playing video games?

Ghostofmet

I have a Dell Inspiron and it keeps shutting down when I play on Steam. I've had this laptop since the end of May 2013 and I've had no problems with Steam before but as of November it started to shut down when I'm playing games on Steam ( mainly Saints Row ) I've did a scan on it and i have no viruses and everything is updated, what can I do?

I have windows 8 and 4.00 GB of RAM.
I'm 15 and I bought the Dell with my own money, it was the only thing I could afford, if I had enough money I would of bought a better laptop.....or just built my own PC.

Answer
you can test your laptops capability to run any game you want to test at http://systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

but please don't try to force your laptop to play something that it will struggle to play

otherwise all that money you've invested will just disappear

Yes I know you did what you could with the money you had and you want to play games... I understand that but listen to an old wise man.. don't destroy what you've got - go tap on your friends shoulder and ask to use his desktop gaming rig

What is better for school and gaming a 15 inch Macbook pro or a Alienware laptop?

Flash

i just want to know which is better for gaming and for school. Plz give me a discriptive answer if you can.

Answer
Clear cut answer. Alienwares are better for gaming by FAR (galactic far), and a macbook Pro is better for school. Take this from an Alienware M17 owner :)

Macbook Pros are not gaming machines, and do not listen to ANYONE who will tell you the opposite. Without sinking hundreds of $ into a macbook pro will it ever be a gaming machine. They may be adequate for light gaming, but their graphics cards will not blast away games like crysis or world in conflict. The macbooks graphics card the 9600M GT is equipped with 256 MB of video memory on the cheapest setting (still not cheap). That is an iffy number but should run games on medium low fine. Heres are few benchmarks:
FPS = frames per second, 30 FPS is considered playable, anything under 15-20 FPS is not

FEAR 2: on high settings you get around 20 FPS
GTA IV: on all maxed completely unplayable, will not load, on medium 22FPS
Far Cry 2: 19 FPS unplayable
Crysis Warhead: on high 7 FPS unplayable
COD4: 18-24 FPS semi-playable
Anno 1404: ultra 14 FPS semi-playable

Now the macbook does have something that the alienware doesn't, a light profile and small form factor. This is a definite plus as it makes carrying it around that much easier. For productivity purposes ONLY the macbook fits the bill. I personally wouldn't be able to take the gaming graphics or framerates, but depending on your tastes you may find them acceptable.

TOTAL COST AT SPECS: 1700$

Now the alienware (lets assume the M15 upgraded to a Nvidia 260M to match the price of the macbook config), is a gaming powerhouse compared to the mac. If you spend a few bucks to upgrade itll be even a more powerful machine, but its plenty powerful as it is. Not only does it have CPU FSBs and RAM frequencies maxed out (ensuring maximum performance), it also has an Nvidia 260M with 512 MB of dedicated video memory(great gaming chip). Overall this machine is way more powerful than the mac and you should get faster speeds with it. Again, here are some benchmarks:

FEAR 2: on high settings you get around 42 FPS
GTA IV: on all maxed out 26+ FPS
Far Cry 2: 50 FPS7
Crysis Warhead: on high around 15 FPS still unplayable
COD4: ~76 FPS fluently playable
Anno 1404: ultra 34 FPS
Overall a great gaming scorer

Now the cons of the alienware are its size and weight. This thing is going to be heavy, and it will be a much thicker laptop than the macbook. The battery life will only come down to about 2 hours (no gaming), and the power brick is way larger than the macbooks. This will play games out there across a broad spectrum, and it can do productivity software (word processing and stuff) almost as well as a mac.

Total cost at spec: 1750$ starting at 1500$

You have picked two polar opposites, generally the rule goes like this. Macs are for productivity and World of Warcraft, Alienwares are for people who like to play heavier gaming. I own an Alienware M17 (not sold on their site anymore) and I have never been happier with the gaming performance, though the size and weight is a bit of a hassle at times. I cannot recommend a laptop for you at this point, but use my points up above to make your decision.

is the MSI GX630-028US 15.4-Inch Laptop good for gaming?!?

F-A-L-L-E-

for like world of warcraft?!?

MSI GX630-028US 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Athlon Dual-Core Processor, 4 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, 512 MB Geforce 9600 Graphics, Vista Premium) by MSI
if so how good?

Answer
Well, it depends on the gaming. Games like Bioshock, and Left 4 Dead, as well as WoW, would look great on there, but newer more benchmark oriented games, will have problems, and there is no way to ever play them on that laptop the way they were meant to be played. There will also be no upgrade options for something like that. If you are really into gaming, and need to play each sequel to Crysis, you may want to look more towards a desktop, which can be upgraded for years, until all parts become obsolete, or you may just be a simple gamer, and appreciate the latter, so go with the one you like as they both do well.

Processor Requirements to Play a Game on my laptop?

Seor Dav

I want to buy Anno 1404, which says the system requirement for the processor is 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4. I am using a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. My processor is an Inter(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T3400 @ 2.16 GHz 2.17 GHz. Will the game run properly on my laptop?

I meet all of the other requirements for OS, RAM, ROM and video card memeory.
@Joshua: The game isn't listed on that site, but thanks; nice idea.
@Chirag: Wikipedia says that the maximum clocked CPU rate of a Pentium 4 is 3.8 GHz, while the maximum clocked CPU rate of a Dual Core is 3.06 GHz. It seems that the single Pentium 4 can run faster than the Dual Cores.

Answer
Yes, you meet the CPU requirement. The minimum CPU requirement is a 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4. Since that is a minimum, any superior CPU meets the requirement. Your T3400 is vastly superior to a 3GHz Pentium 4.

To give you an idea how superior it is: The PassMark CPU rating of a 3GHz Pentium 4 is 488. The PassMark CPU rating of a T3400 is 1,133.

Your CPU came out at the end of 2008. The 3GHz Pentium 4 came out in 2000. Do you really think 8 years of product research and development yielded a CPU that was inferior?!

"Wikipedia says that the maximum clocked CPU rate of a Pentium 4 is 3.8 GHz, while the maximum clocked CPU rate of a Dual Core is 3.06 GHz. It seems that the single Pentium 4 can run faster than the Dual Cores."

This is based on a very serious misunderstanding. The NetBurst microarchitecture in the Pentium 4 is nothing like the Core microarchictecture in the Core 2. You cannot compare clock speeds across CPU architectures. It's like saying a bicycle is faster than a 747 because it has more pedals.

gaming laptop!!!?

Philosophi

hi. im interested in buying a laptop for pc games. i dont want a flashy one, because im not willing to shell out 1000 bucks for one. im looking for a laptop that will support the minimum requirements for games like call of duty4, halo, etc.
im looking to spend around 400-500 bucks
thanks

Answer
well I hate to tell you but you can hardly find a basic laptop for 500 bucks these days. A minimum gaming model would probably be about 900+. One with a good processor and graphics card won't be. Easy to find under 1000 or so. Sorry. If I had to bet I'd go with one of the less advertised brands, try compaq or toshiba ( ive got a toshiba )

Whats a good Gaming Laptop?

FJ

Now, I know this has been asked a few times, but I wanted an answer that's personal, and right up to date with the fastly changing world of computers.

I am looking to do some gaming, and I want to know what laptop to buy but unfortunately for me, a desktop is out of the question, as I need my computer to do work as well and take to the office and at home. My price range is £600-£700 but if I find something I love, I can go as far as £850. Im not looking for something that can run 3 copies of crisis or anything like that, just something that can cope with some of the recent releases, and if possible, something that can be upgraded in the future. An example of the games I want are mainly older RTS games, but I would like MW2, and when its finally out, SC2.

Any input would be great.

It's usually between an Asus and an Alienware. My budget is around $1200 but I don't mind spending a bit extra for better performance. I don't care about weight or baterry life since i'm looking for a laptop as good as a desktop. Any ideas?

I'll continue updating.
I already have a ps3

But I still want a I really good laptop for 4-5 years

Should i get a laptop for xmas or my birthday?

Alexa

Which one would you chose? Im asking for a macbook and my mom keeps asking me if i want it for my birthday or if i want it for christmas. My birthday is on November 10th.

Answer
You should MAYBE get the 3DS.

Because you can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D so it does NOT give you headaches for the first time in your life (if you're the kind of person to ever get headaches from 3D, otherwise just turn the 3D all the way up).

And you can also turn the 3D OFF Completely.

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

And the Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and I have beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses.

So you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D and Kid Icarus and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts 3D and Crush 3D and Petz Fantasy 3D and Animal Crossing and Gabrielle's Ghostly Grove 3D and Nintendogs + cats and the Sims 3 Pets and King of Pirates and Golden Sun 4 and Zoo Resort 3D and Zelda 3D and Sonic Generations 3D and Tetris 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses.

Also, the screen is perfectly fine, in terms of resolution. Anyway, itâs the pixel density that matters, not the actual number of pixels. The 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV of, for example, 32 inches. Itâs perfectly fine. Not everything has to be 1080p you know. Since 1080p at 32 inches is worse than just 240p on the 3DS.

And they're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game.

And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game cartridge later on.

And 1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix.

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for $169 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses.

And it's getting both Hulu and Hulu Plus (which already has 3D content) before the end of this year (2011)

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 to 2 weeks of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop.

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week.

And you can now pay to download Permanent 3D & 2D Videos on the 3DS as shown in this Link:

http://nintendo3dsblog.com/you-can-now-pay-to-have-permanent-access-to-videos-via-the-nintendo-video-application

and you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

P.S. You will want to check these sites out for the Web Browser's 3D ability:

http://www.3ds-screenshot.com/

http://gamecrunch.co/3dscreens/

http://3dporch.com/

http://www.klutz.com/static/nintendo/n3ds_mm9.html

http://www.instructables.com/3ds/

And the 3DS is getting a Wi-Fi Update this NOVEMBER to RECORD 3D Videos and upload it to YouTube and all of this in the 3DS this November by hooking your 3DS up to a Wireless Internet Connection like Wi-Fi or your own Home Internet or the Library and so fort during November as shown in this Link.

I want a gaming laptop for under 300?

Corey brow

This isnt a joke, my last laptop broke and it was 1k, im not paying that again, DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS TO GET THAT MONEY!?! Lol, anyways i just want to play Minecraft, is there any good laptop for that?(under 300) Thanks :)

Answer
The budget of 300 will help you in getting a good Notebook with good features. The good features are important for playing any of the game. One of notebook which I would recommend is from ACER. It is really good in its performance as well. There's a very good user review here, from an owner that how it actually performs and will help you in deciding:

http://www.amazon.com/review/RPOLZXJT9GFDF/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00AG0BLWU&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=daieom-20

On its technical side, it has 11.6" screen with good graphics. It has Intel Dual Core B847 1.1 GHz processor which is really an efficient one. It has 2GB DDR3 for good multitasking. Storage with 320GB. Other features include 5400RPM HDD, Wifi, HDMI, USB3.0 and VGA Card Reader. And it has a price of $240. So overall a feasible to go for. On the other hand if you want to see other options in this price range then see the list here for most popular laptops with the price of under $300:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_36_6?bbn=565108&qid=1369489245&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A%21493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A565108&rnid=2421885011&low-price=&high-price=300&x=18&y=8&tag=daieom-20

Best Gaming Laptop for Under 300?

Nerf Herde

What is the best laptop to play games over the internet, with a decent amount of RAM, a fairly big Hard Drive, and that cost a small amount. It has be found at either Micro Center or Best Buy. Also, looking for the lowest price possible with decent quality.
EDIT: Ok I can go to like 500-600 but that is about it, I have other things to pay off.
EDIT 2: The absolute max price I could do is probably 1000.

Answer
Funny, really. For $300 the only laptop you could find online would be a netbook but you couldn't find a single laptop at Best Buy or Mircocenter for under $300. And forget about that whole gaming bit. Add a zero to that figure and then we can talk. But honestly expect to pay at the very minimum $750 or $800. When you get that money, look at Asus, they're the best brand. Don't waste your time looking at Alienware, they're trash for the price.

EDIT:
$600 still won't cut it. This is the cheapest laptop you could play games on-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115539

EDIT #2;
For $1000 you're in business. You can get a decent laptop for that much. I would still recommend a desktop since you will get way better specs for the same price. Anyway, here is an excellent choice-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220518
This Asus packs a P8400 which can handle gaming well, the standard 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD, and then the 9650M GT. This card can play every single game out there. How is this possible? Resolution. Asus was smart enough to realize that since the power of this card is limited, they matched it with a monitor that would allow the system to max out most games and still have it look good. The only game you couldn't make would be Crysis, but it would still be perfectly playable. For $900 this isn't a bad deal.

MSI is a well known manufacturer of high quality gaming computer parts. But on a sidenote this laptop does not have a dedicated gpu(most computers under 1000 don't), so gaming performance will not be great. I found you a slightly more expensive option, but is a lot better for your gaming needs. It will run most modern games like titanfall, bf4 on med-high settings at very high framerates(40-60fps). http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GE60-2OE-003US-9S7-16GC11-003-15-6-Inch/dp/B00CU9GKTO/ref=pd_sim_sbs_pc_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=18N6VCQ4PFH0H18N6H6W#productDetails

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Chrome books are useless. They are designed by Google to make you dependent on Google. If you can not access the web then you can not do anything.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

im interested in game design and programming i want to know what kind of laptop to get?

JohnMichae

for making games not for playing games im a begginer so nothing real complicated like what brand and what features it needs

Answer
For game programming, you don't need much. I use a seven-year old Toshiba with Ubuntu and Windows.

Most game programming isn't about the graphics. It's about understanding data. Learn a programming language or two. I like Python as an early language, but eventually you'll need C++.

It will take you years to learn enough programming to write simple 2D games, and you should start there.

If you're doing 3D graphics, you'll eventually need a machine with a real graphics card. Cheap laptops often have a 'shared memory' graphics adapter. This will not be sufficient for 3D modeling (although it will be fine for programming.) Look for a laptop with a big-name graphics adapter: NVidia or AMD/ATI. Stay away from the Intel shared memory adapter. It won't be able to handle the higher end graphics features. If you can't see texture and lighting, for example, it's going to be hard to program.

Graphics acceleration is expensive in a laptop because the cards usually have to be built into the machine, and can't be easily added in as they can on a desktop tower.
3D Graphics cards also produce a lot of heat, and this is a big problem in a laptop. You'll need a good fan and plenty of ventilation, or your laptop will overheat when you're testing your graphics-heavy games.

In short, the best laptop for writing high-end 3D games is the best for playing them. You won't need this kind of horsepower for quite some time, though, so you can get away with just about anything in the meantime.

College/Gaming laptop?

Gabbie

So I'm going to college in the fall, and even though I've read through forum after forum, I can't decide on a good gaming/college laptop. I've seen that Alienware M18x is great, as well as the M17/15x, but the M18x is about 3500, way out of my budget. I'm not very technologically savvy, so don't bother going over the specs of it because I won't understand a word of it. Basically I need something that I can play Guild Wars 2 on, and other such high graphics games, as if I was playing on a desktop, but at the same time, can be lugged around from class room to room for notes. I'm not partial to either Apple or Windows, all I'm really concerned about is price and quality. Please and thank you.

Answer
First off, if you want to game, for the love of god don't get a Mac. They are atrocious for support in most games.

With Alienware, they sell medium range parts for high prices because it's under the brand name, so it looks cool but it blows your budget. :)

You probably want something like
http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?InventoryItemID=611073&CategoryID=312
(Ignore the price, I'm from Australia and everything is jacked up over here).
This one will be cheap, attend to your needs, and probably the same as an alienware. If you're not sure, your local computer shop will also help you as best as you can.

Does this site have good laptops?

I've been looking for a cheap laptop in Australia that would be good with games and I finally found a site, could anyone please tell me if there are any good laptops on here: http://www.centrecom.com.au/laptops

Minecraft
Sims 3
And more

Answer
Our Unknown answerer, ? who answered first is correct. Cheap, Gaming, and Laptop don't go together at all. No, it's not about you WANTING to buy one, or only having a limited budget... it is about an unreal expectation that you should be ABLE to purchase one that will handle the heavy resource drain, for a low price.

Let's put this another way. Over 80% of all laptop owners and users don't play games on their laptops... and if they do, they are flash-based games they play in their browsers. This is why over 80% of all laptops you see are not capable of playing games other than what would run in a web browser with flash. So... you see all these laptops out there on the market going for low prices and you think... "Hmm... there's got to be one at those prices that will play games!". Your correlation is not based on fact, however. It is based on your desire. You WANT one to be cheap.

Why do the vast majority of laptop owners purchase a laptop? Because they want a light-weight computer they can move around, that will provide them with enough battery power to do the things they need to do. What do the vast majority of laptop owners need to do? Surf the web, social network, check their email, work on office documents, and look at pictures of cats. They want to do these things for 4-8 hours before they need to recharge their laptops. They want to do this on a laptop that isn't going to exhaust them because it is so heavy.

Look at the Google Chromebook. http://www.walmart.com/ip/25863246?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=3&adid=22222222227018267988&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=25820999196&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=51044925636&veh=sem#Specifications there is one at an American retailer, for $229 USD (that's $241 AUD) It is a classic example of a device built to meet the needs of the majority. A tiny battery, no optical drive... it doesn't even have Windows. It has the Google ChromeOS, which runs completely from a web browser. However, just about everyone out there who uses a laptop (I mean a majority, or more than 50%) would easily make due with one of these little devices.

So, what are your options then? Well... first, you have to do some work on your own. Yes. You need to learn a nifty catch-phrase. "System Requirements". Now.... you take that catch-phrase, and you look up the System Requirements for each of the games that you want to play. You compile all of those system requirements into a single set of specifications... and THEN you start looking at laptops. Once you know the minimum processor speed, and video card model, and amount of Ram, and amount of hard drive space, and whether you will need an optical drive... and any thing else... THEN you can start examining laptops to see which will meet your needs. Once you have a list of laptops that will meet your needs, you can find the least expensive one and buy it. We can't do this for you, for two important reasons. One... it's lazy of you to expect us to do the work for you. Two, we don't know all the games you want to play. We could look up the system requirements for minecraft and sims 3, and give you some laptop choices. But at that point, you'd say "Ok, Oh... and I want to play COD too"... at which point our laptop choices wouldn't fit any more. And then, we'd have to give you others, but you'd say "So... will it play WoW with all the expansions?" Only you know what you intend to play with the laptop. And yes, I get it... you want a laptop that would handle games that you haven't seen yet. Which means you don't want to purchase the minimum laptop necessary to play these games... you want something more powerful that can play newer stuff.... which is why you just knocked any semblance of Cheap right out of the ballpark.

You will PROBABLY end up looking at used laptops in the end however, since you can likely find something with more bang for your buck if it's got a few years on it and someone owned it previously. Like, an Asus G53 series... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-A53SJ-/121204140416?pt=AU_comp_laptop&hash=item1c38546980&_uhb=1 there's one on Ebay. Not a bad laptop, and it's made for gaming (to a degree) and the price is better than the new ones you are looking at.

But hey... what do I know, right?

Decent Gaming Laptop?

ifskdajf

What is a decent priced Gaming Laptop out on the market? I would like to run Starcraft 2 on Normal Settings. My price range is around 1k. Is Alienware really worth the cost?
To Clarify: I will also be using the laptop for uni so a desktop is out of the question.
Im interested in the Lenovo Z560, is this a decent laptop?

Answer
want to game? GET a desktop!!!!! simple. Alienware laptops are not worth it. IF you really want to game. build your own custom gaming PC. no matter how much you spend for a laptop it will never be a nice gaming platform ...

then get a netbook for uni (200$) and build your cutom gaming desktop for 600-700$ if you build it yourself you will save alot. I built mine for 700$ and on teh market (DELL / alienware) sell it for 1300+) I got a phenom II x6 / 64 SSD / 1 TB 7200 / GTX 470 / 8 GIG of ram DDR3 .. and it was under 750$) oh and a 700WATT PSU.

honestly... who wants to carry around a 17 inch "gaming" laptop? it will be bulky!! and a waste as you can never tinker with it and upgrade as you want.

if you insist then you need one with dedicated graphics not integrated. here is one:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6700940&CatId=4938

here is another:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6701445&CatId=4938

very tough to find one with dedicated graphics in that price range.. you should up it to 1500 if you want a decent gaming laptop!!

My computer is a Toshiba. I got it 2012 for Christmas and it has Windows 8.

Answer
A "PC" game means a Windows game. You will find that a PC game works well on a Windows system and a Mac game works well on a Mac system. Each game's website shows the requirements for using it. Compare that with the specs of your computer / OS version and VOILA!!!!

As far as notebook compared with tower, it varies a lot, and there is a lot of over-lap, but usually a tower has more powerful graphics. That's the main hardware spec needed for most games (but you can't ignore processor, RAM, etc.).

The Sims isn't a real tax on the system of a computer (low requirements), so typically, any computer that runs Windows 8 well can also run Sims well. This includes Apple notebooks, since Windows 8 cannot be installed on any 2008 or older Mac. You haven't yet told what computer you own, so that's about all we can say.

EDIT :

No chat allowed on Yahoo Answers, so you would need to submit a new question if you have some additional questions. From the Amazon page....

"""Minimum Requirements:
OS: Windows Vista (SP1)/Windows XP (SP2)
Processor: Vista - 2.4 GHz P4 or equivalent/XP - 2.0 GHz P4 or equivalent
RAM: 1.5 GB
Disc Drive: 8x DVD ROM or faster
Hard Drive: 8 GB or more, with at least 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games.
Video Card: 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0. Supported video cards include: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900, FX 5950, 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800, 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950, 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800, 9600, 9800, GTX 260, GTX 280 (GeForce FX unsupported under Vista); ATI Radeon 9500, 9600, 9800, X300, X600, X700, X800, X850, X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950, 2400, 2600, 2900, 3450, 3650, 3850, 3870, 4850, 4870; Intel Extreme Graphics GMA X3x00 series.
Other: Laptop versions of chipsets above may work, but may run comparatively slower."""

Now, the laptop has Windows 8. The game is from 1999-2000, it is compatible with Windows 98. Could I play this game on this laptop?

Answer
No, but it would probably run on Linux using the Wine compatibility program. Or, PlayOnLinux, or Crossover. Many Linux distros will work on that Inspiron, and they won't drive you crazy like Windows 8.

If you are really into gaming, and need to play each sequel to Crysis, you may want to look more towards a desktop, which can be upgraded for years, until all parts become obsolete, or you may just be a simple gamer, and appreciate the latter, so go with the one you like as they both do well.

is hp g62 series laptop good for gaming????any suggestion?

Romm

I'm going to buy this laptop next week.I just want to know if this laptop good for gaming because i normally play video games on my laptop..

Answer
The hp g62 series is a middle-level laptop, and it should be sufficient if you are just playing online games except for graphic hungry online games such as Perfect World, WOW and so on.

If you are a hardcore gamer or a person who demand a certain level of graphic quality, I advise you to get a desktop as it is more suitable.

Compare and Contrast (Desktop and Laptop)

Laptop
-Limited battery life
-Limited customization
-Easily overheat
-Middle-range hardwares
-Internet might be unstable sometimes if you are using WIFI

Desktop
-Do not have a battery or limited amount of uptime
-Customizable
-Do not overheat easily
-Greater game play
-Wider range of hardware
-Stable Internet if you are using LAN
-More hard disk space

And I can go on forever (just joking lol)

That is my opinion about it, but if you still persist to buy a laptop just for the sake of it then this laptop will be suitable for a mid range gamer.

I hope it helps ! =D

Best cheap gaming laptop?

Richard

I want to get a decent gaming laptop that can paly bf3, minecraft, arma 2, dayz...etc... But i only want to spend around $500 any sjggestions?

Answer
Gaming systems do not need the latest bleeding edge technology to give hours of fun and satisfaction. There will be people who are going to claim that you need the highest resolution screen (1920 x 1080) and the fastest CPU and GPU with obscene amounts of ram. They think that by picking all the latest bleeding edge parts and slapping them together makes it all work. Choose what works for you in your budget. A 1366 x 768 screen with a middle of the road CPU, GPU will work just fine. You're not going to be playing the bleeding edge games with bleeding edge technology in the highest settings, but you will be having fun.

This HP can be customized to what you need, Bump the APU and ram for better performance.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

I want a great gaming laptop/desktop?

Ryan

Not cheap but not expensive 500-600$$$
Please help I'm a hard core gamer ac3 soon ac4 skyrim far cry 3 black opps 2/1 I need it to be fast try to stay within budget I could go up to 700$$$ but I would prefer not

Answer
A real gaming laptop will start at maybe $700.
Take a look at these rankings:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/best-worst-notebook-brands-2013/3

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/landing_pages/ideapad/gaming-pcs
http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/Gaming_Products/

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.
Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.
Sony hardware has generally been good, but they are notorious for putting huge amounts of crapware/bloatware on machines and gathering information on their consumers without their knowledge or permission.
Toshiba has bottomed the rankings. Personally, I have used them and never had a problem, but that does not appear to be the case any more.

Here is my current desktop wishlist for intense gaming:
Asus Sabertooth, Crossfire V Formula-Z, or the Crossfire V Formula motherboard with the AMD chipset. Any reliable brand of motherboard with the 990FX chipset will work, but I have a strong preference for Asus boards.
AMD FX-8350 or FX 6350 CPU.
Some brand of GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost
2x4 gb RAM
128 GB SSD for OS and applications - This can be eliminated for cost savings.
1 TB HDD with a 5 year warranty.
Asus Blu-Ray writer/DVDRW, CDRW, etc. You can save $50 or so by dropping the Blu-Ray part of the optical drive.
Flash memory card reader.
Corsair Carbide 400R case.
750 Watt 80+ Certified Bronze modular power supply. This could be dropped to a 650 watt supply, but stick with the 80+ Bronze.

Cheap gaming laptop? Help?

Josh

I am currently looking at gaming laptops I want to invest in in the near future, but I want it to be a cheap laptop, I already have one, and don't want something that is thousands of dollars. Here is a website of what I am looking for: http://allgaminglaptops.com/best-gaming-laptops-under-1000/#comment-1435

Now, what would be the best laptop to get on that sight, other than the Alienware (I know those are good, but is a high price). I play games like Skyrim, Minecraft, Sims 3, Pay Day 2, Planetside 2, and much higher quality games. Which one would be the best investment for a guy with a small budget? Thanks.
I should've mentioned my price range. I know they aren't cheap, but some are cheaper than others. I want one between $800-$1200, hopefully more near the $800-$900 range. Sorry, forgot to mention that!

Answer
3 mutually exclusive terms: cheap, gaming, laptop

Laptops have to be carefully engineered to use as little power as possible and generate as little heat as possible. Gaming requires intense CPU activity and even more GPU activity. Both require large amounts of electricity and generate a lot of heat.

Gaming laptops start at about $750 and go up quickly from there.

You might find some of the Asus V55 series around from last year that would do the trick.
Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

What gaming laptop should I get next 2013?

Shadomaste

Right now I have a lenovo y580. It has an i7, gtx 660m, 8gb of ram, 1tb hard drive. I have had this laptop for about a year and a half and at about every two years I buy a new computer. My computer right now is great but it is getting a little old. I use it for gaming and school purposes. What laptop should I get next? My "requirements" are that it has at least a gtx 760m and an i5. My price range is from 1000 to about 1750. Thanks so much.

Answer
Laptops are not for gaming. I'd keep the one I have for school and build my own PC.

can this gaming laptop run battlefield 3 at maximux settings? my specs are:

intel pentium 3 @1.4GHz

ram 512MB DDR2

graphics card: intel GMA 950 (128MB)

Answer
no buddy you cannot run Battel field 3 with this laptop and this is not a gaming laptop any more.even you cannot run battel field on lowest settings. you need alienware m17 or m18 with high end GPU to run bf3 on high settings i think there is only few laptops models are available to run BF3 on maximum settings get some gamine laptop with high end AMD or NVIDIA GPU as well as u need quad core processor to run this game like intel core i7,intel core 2 quad or some AMD high end processors.the battel field is the mother of all games its so heavy even on amd 6770 and nvidia 555m its run only on low settings.with your laptop maybe you can just play latest online games.

I'm getting a Alienware Gaming Laptop - Will this setup make it through Battlefield 3?

Born2Answe

I'm getting a Alienware Gaming Laptop - M18x
3rd Generation Intel® Core⢠i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
8GB (2 X 4GB) Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
750GB 7,200 RPM SATA 3Gb/s <-- Hard Drive
2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 675M VIDEO CARD
Will This Setup play battlefield or the new games at least on high?
Tell me do I need to change anything?
Do i have a good video card?
Thanks for your time :D

Answer
This will run Battlefield fine on Ultra settings. If it could go farther, your laptop could still play very smoothly. But Alienwares are probably the worst gaming laptops invented by man. Dell made it, therefore, should not be worthy of doing anything but surfing the internet.

Gaming Laptop?!?!?

jv120

Im looking to get a new, reasonably priced, gaming laptop. Ive looked at a few and was wondering what someone who knows more about gaming, and computers thought about the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi5. I know there are better, more powerful, computers for gaming but this one fits in my price range.

Answer
Agree with what warren said. laptops are not good for gaming.

if you seriously consider gaming, 2000 dollars will get you a much better desktop. I have to admit that even the laptops with the most powerful GPU and CPU processors are in the middle end of desktops. Although the Toshiba Satellite X205-SLi5 will be a very good choice, I highly recommend you buying a 2000 dollar desktop and you would be getting a much more powerful set-up.

What is a good Gaming laptop?

i need a laptop that can run Call of duty, WoW, Minecraft, TF2, Sims without any lag and othor common steam games plus a intel core i5 or i7 prossesor with at least a 500GB HD. 4Gb of ram
here is my budget: $200-1000
also i need a web cam and microphone on it for the occasional skype

Answer
Your biggest concern for gaming on a laptop is the GPU. Most laptops have slow GPU's built in to the chipset. You need a seperate GPU from nVidia or AMD Radeon.

Here are some laptop GPU benchmarks:
