is 10mbps enough for 3 people to share on a wifi connection?

I'm considering getting time warner's standard internet (29.99/mo) but want to make sure it'll be enough for 3 people (with 3 laptops) to use for video streaming, chatting, social networking, downloading, and everything else people typically use the internet for nowadays. Is it enough so that the internet maintains a decent speed?

Answer
Its quite enough, but speed might get slower in rate..!!!!

I can imagine several scenarios....

1) I want to sell diamonds to people overseas... but they need to inspect the goods in realtime and in detail. So I need a high definition telepresence with a camera that can handle detail down to a microscopic level. That kind of bandwidth can easily chew through 24 Mbps with a 50 Ms latency. My business will depend on people being able to inspect the goods and be satisfied that they are getting the real deal. They will also want to look me directly in the eye in realtime and see if they can trust me.

2) A doctor in Garunkuwa needs to do some very specialised surgery, so he needs the help of a specialist. The only problem is that the specialist is in Sweden. So they need to hook up a telemedicine connection and maybe also some remote surgery equipment. The specialist in Sweden can now watch the surgery live and if need be assist with the remote robotic arms. Lives are saved.

3) I want to start a business offering live televised Safaris to people who cannot travel to South Africa, but want to see the animals close up, live and in detail. Same scenario... this requires plenty of HD live video transfer.

4) I want to offer the banks a remote backup system than can do live instant real-time system backups. The banks entire customer database runs into the hundreds of gigabytes. How am I going to be able to back up that entire system offsite in realtime before the data changes so significantly that the backup is then already hours out of date?

5) A university wants to offer a course in Astronomy and to hook into several observatories worldwide. They could use the universities own backbone, but that would most likely tie up the entire pipe for an hour or two... or they could use a third party provider to supply the bandwidth needs for the hour of the week that the course is running.

These are all bandwidth demands that are current... not even accounting for future needs. The business opportunities are astounding. People in Europe and the East are already used to doing things on the internet in realtime. If they could do those same things with a connection to Africa, we would be raking in the bucks here. Virtual HD Safaris man... I'm gonna go patent that idea right now.

As the article mentioned:

Faster is better when it comes to WIFI, but some people argue that 10 Mbps may be enough for most residential broadband consumers.

Obviously there are cases where you can use more bandwidth, but these are a select few, and usually not applicable to residential users.
Every one of your examples are for business or scientific applications.

I believe that 10Mbps is more than enough for current WIFI residential use. More would be nice, but not neccesary.

EA might be enjoying their success with Digital distibution, but that also means they must tweak their content to fit the medium. You rarely get any content that requires more than a dual layer DVD, which is 8GB. That's about 2 hours of downloading @ 10Mbps. Hardly a trainsmash. Digital distribution can also cater for selective loads. Distribute the Main engine with enough level content for gameplay to start, and download the rest as the game plays out.

Why do people think that China relies on the West so much?

Mr Miyagi

It is a myth, People must have overlooked the fact that China mines 97% of all rare earth metals, these metals are used in nuclear weapons, cruise missiles, catalytic converters, laptops, wind turbines, engines and just about every new green tech there is among millions of other things. China has restricted exports to Europe and the USA, they have basically played a great game. China has in recent years diversified its investments and they are waiting for the USA to loosen its grip on the mideast and will move in like they have done with south Asia and Africa.
@ Scott - i guess you have not been following how China has diversified their economy - there is no need to get angry it is just the way they have played such a good game.
http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2010-10/officials-claim-chinese-rare-earths-embargo-expands-include-us-and-europe

Answer
China does not need the west at all, it is self- sustainable in everything except petroleum, not like the US which can't even manage to make shoes.

I want to buy a decent gaming laptop, one that will run games such as Starcraft 2, Dawn of War 2 and Command and Conquer 4 reasonably well, but i dont know where the best/cheapest place is to buy one. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Alienware has good gaming laptops for the cheapest around 750. They are decent. Just depends on your budget is, you can also try just going on craigslist or ebay if you have to. but alienware is most reccommended and trusted. http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/alienware-m11x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

This alienware laptop is 799 and can play all those games easily, the only downside is the small screen.

And also the M11x looks great and you can customize it however you choose.

How good are the specs on this gaming laptop?

Tman

I am buying a gaming laptop, and I was wondering how long these specs will last me, and if I will be able to run games like call of duty modern warfare 2 and crysis. The specs are

intel core i3 2.26 ghz processor
nvidia 260m 1gb graphics card
4 gigs of ram
windows 7

will this run games like crysis and call of duty modern warfare 2? if not what needs to be upgraded?

Answer
Its alright. Another question I'd ask about it is if the hard drive is 5400RPM or 7200RPM. Laptop drives normally come 5400, which is obviously slower than the 7200RPM. Where this effects performance is the loading of texture files from the hard drive (background graphics in games). Without seeing further specs on the laptop its hard to generate a good opinion of it. If the Nvidia mobile chipset it has is GTX and in add-on form its great. If its integrated and drawing from the 4 gbs of memory, not so much. All and all I advise people to try to stick with desktops for gaming. Easier to upgrade when games start demanding more, and they can be built small for hauling over to lan parties as well. Lot less heat issues with gaming desktops compared to laptops as well. Hope this was helpful!

I wish to buy a laptop and want to know if it's compatible, and if that processor is better than pentium. I'm not tech savy.
I also want to know if a game requires 2.4 ghz to run does a 2.2 ghz computer with turbo boost also allow for function? and is turbo boost automatically enabled? I appreciate all and any help.

Answer
Rob, if you want to do any gaming, you must avoid the lowest end hardware.

the i3 is very low end, its basically the dai that failed every single test before it was put into a chip and branded i3.

Core i5 + ATi 7XXX series GPU
Quadcore AMD + ATi GPU
Core i5 + Nvidia GT or GTX anything
Core i7 + ATi 7XXX Series GPU
Core i7 + Nvidia GT or GTX anything

The GPU is the most important part of graphics design and gaming, the cpu only makes a 5-10% performance difference.

Once again, the GPU is 90% of the gaming and graphics design of any computer.

Im glad you didnt just buy it, but instead took the critical first step in your research to find the perfect laptop for all of your needs.

Research and research until you really understand what it is that you need, only then will you be very satisfied and know that you will have the computer you need, that will last you many many years of its productive life.

Answer
I dont know much about computer specs, but from what i know yours look pretty good, maybe get it cleaned at best buy if its becoming slow. Also i think if you have a smartphone or tablet, the dependability of laptops is decreasing. I think you should save a little more and get a desktop. Look at this:
Computer's official page: http://www.originpc.com/gaming/desktops/chronos/
Forbe's review: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2013/06/03/gaming-pc-review-origins-chronos-stays-cool-under-pressure-outperforms-competition/
One of the best gaming desktops, its semi-cheap, extremely nice and its compact. Im sure you have a keyboard and mouse lying around and possibly a monitor, or you could get and adapter and hook it up to a tv.
Pros: Small, stays cool, amazing specs, customizable, fairly cheap and has the premium look of a Mac.
Cons: Can become expensive if you have to buy a keyboard, mouse and monitor and its not a laptop.

Also this: http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/
These are Chromebooks: Extremely cheap and stylish. They have a very small SSD (16 or 32GB) but it doesnt really matter because everything is online. Im not sure, but you might not even have to download games.
Pros: Saves everything to the cloud (you get 100 GB for free), cheap, stylish, 3G coverage available, googles [cool] custom OS
Cons: Not many games, basically unusable without wifi or 3g(like the xbox one originally) and googles [unproven] OS

I really think you should consider the new iMac, though. Only $1100 on Bestbuy because it is originally $1300, its on sale for $1200 and if you have a .edu email from college, they'll email you an $100 off coupon. iMacs come with a mouse and keyboard. So $1100 is it. Comes with everything you would want, 21.5 inch 1920-1080 display, a 2.7 or 2.9 quad core intel i5 processor, 8gb or 16gb of RAM, 1 TB hard drive is standard, but you can make it 256gb or 512 gb of flash storage which is much faster or 1 TB fusion drive which is i think 128 gb of flash and the rest hard drive, which learns the files you open most and moves them to the flash storage for quicker access. It has an NVIDIA GeForce GT 640/650 with 512MB of GDDR5 memory. An hd facetime camera and 4 usb 3.0 ports. Also gaming on Mac is much easier than people think, all you need is a copy of windows. All new macs come with Bootcamp so you can install windows on your mac. All you have to do is restart your mac and then 100% of your computers power will be dedicated to windows and you can install windows games like you woud on any windows compuer. On parallels you can also do this but it cost 80$ to buy parrallels and you dont need to reboot it. but that means your computer is running 2 OSs at once, so 3d games like skyrim will be slowed down significantly, Also you get the premium look of a mac(duh) with an iMac. If you get a Mac, look at this:
http://www.javarants.com/2006/09/04/crossover-wine-vs-parallels-vs-bootcamp/
Nvm, i cant find what i was looking at last night, but this is really good too.It compares the 4 method for playing pc games on your mac.

Answer
You're best off building a desktop for computer gaming. You can build one high end for $1000

Core i5 2500K processor + AMD 6950 Radeon + 4 GB DDR3, etc

As far as laptops go, this is your best bet for $1200

Core i7 2630QM processor (excellent!)
Nvidia 460m GTX video chip (excellent)
6 GB RAM + 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive (very good)
Brand: ASUS (very good also)

Brad Truxi

I want a gaming laptop and im willing to spend about $3300 on one, but this laptop will also be the laptop i will be using for college. Currently i am looking at the alienware m17x or the Sager Np9280. What im worried about is the size and weight of these computers, they are 17inches and and the sager is about 12 lbs. Do i really want to be carrying these powerful machines around with me, another option i was thinking about was to get an HP mini or another small computer with this laptop, but idk

Answer
For that amount of money, you should be able to get about any gaming laptop you want. A 12 lb. laptop would definitely not be very portable. . .if you intend on carrying it around with you often, that probably won't be your best option.

I did a quick search for 17" gaming laptops using Laptop Scout
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-laptop-scout/default.aspx), and found some that might work. One of the matches was the Alienware model you listed, and another was the Falcon FragBook NW TLX. It's priced at about $2446, but it weighs in at about 7lbs., boasts a great looking LCD screeen, a great graphics card, and uses the fastest processor that Intel makes. It might be a good fit for you.

There are a couple other laptops at the site, I recommend you head there and use the Compare tool to see how they match up with one another. Hopefully it'll help you find the gaming machine that's right for you.

What is the best gaming laptop, with a price range of £600 to £800?

Trent

Just wanted to buy a laptop for college that may be used a little for gaming as well. If anyone could suggest some good makes or even websites it would be much appreciated.

Answer
You'll want to focus on two aspects: The GPU, and the display.

The GPU is the primary determining factor for game performance. Game performance tends to be bottlenecked by the GPU before any other performance-related spec -- CPU, RAM, etc. -- makes its way into relevance for concern.

The display is a key point to focus on, in that once you start getting into price ranges that make it reasonable for you to get a decent display, you want to try to get a decent display. The differences between available displays is one of the things that makes the most difference, because of how significant the differences are between displays, and because it literally affects everything you do. 15.6" 1920x1080 displays and 17.3" 1920x1080 displays are examples on the good end of the spectrum. They're great in that the resolution lets you fit a lot onscreen, and in that displays with those size-resolution combinations tend to be decent quality LCD panels with good colors/contrast. This is in contrary to displays such as 15.6" 1366x768 and 17.3" 1600x900, which make things onscreen large and tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like that when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

As covered a little bit above, less important are CPU and RAM. Most concern for these specs stems from dishonest marketing courtesy of manufacturers, resellers, and retailers. Focus on the things that are important and, more often than not, the computers you'll find that do well in the areas that are important to be concerned with, come with more than enough in these areas.

------------------

That said, here are a number of laptops that do well in these two areas.

MSI GE60: 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display, NVIDIA GT 650M, £729
- http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/MSI_GE60_1360310.html

MSI GE70: 17.3" 1920x1080 matte display, NVIDIA GT 650M, £799
- http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/MSI_GE70_1357972.html

Dell Inspiron 17R SE: 17.3" 1920x1080 matte display, NVIDIA GT 650M, £599

- Avoid any of the models that say they come with the "900p" display. With the Inspiron 17R SE, you want to be careful to make sure that the model you're buying comes with the "1080p" (1920x1080) display, and not the "900p" (1600x900) display.

Lenovo Y500: 15.6" 1920x1080 glossy display, NVIDIA GT 650M, £749
- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Ideapad-Laptop-Black-Graphics-Windows/dp/B00B2HVYRI

PCSpecialist Optimus IV: 15.6" or 17.3" 1920x1080 matte display, NVIDIA GTX 660M, ~£749 / ~£773
- 15.6" version: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusIV-15/
- 17.3" version: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusIV-17/
- Processor: Select the i3-3210M or i5-3210M.
- RAM: Select 4GB or 8GB. 2GB (default) is a bit on the low side; and past 8GB is unnecessary. But I'd also suggest looking into the prices of upgrading this after-market. It's often cheaper.
- Hard Disk: Upgrades here are cheap. I'd probably suggest the 500GB 7200RPM or 750GB 7200RPM.

PCSpecialist Enigma IV: 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display, NVIDIA GT 650M, ~£699
- http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/enigmaIV/
- Display: Select one of the two 1920x1080 options. You should avoid buying this laptop with either of the two 1366x768 display options (one of which is the default).
- If you can get the Optimus IV for a similar price by downgrading a thing or two in its configuration (namely CPU and RAM), then I would. GPU is the most important thing to be concerned with for gaming, and the Optimus IV has a faster GPU.

I am running a windows partition using windows 7 home premium 64x, and I have a intel i7 processor, and a intel HD graphics 3000. I have 8Gb oh memory in my slots. When I run GTA iv, it runs extremely slow, with something like 60 mb of memory. I installed the driver for the graphics card on the windows side, but something is not right. I don't know exactly what is wrong, but it should be running a hell lot better than it is now. Please help me.

Answer
The reason GTA IV is slow on your MacBook Pro is because Windows 7 is not made for the Macintosh. I have a Hackintosh which is a PC with Mountain Lion and Windows 7 dual boot. Whenever I try to play GTA IV it too lags even though it has high end specs. Your Mac hardware doesn't like the Windows operating system and is not used to running such powerful graphics which brings to the Intel Graphics 3000 which, in fair is a terrible graphics card.

Get yourself one of these (the best gaming computer for the price): http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y510p/#customize

This computer will run any game no problem.

Happy to help

I know ASUS and Alienware are supposed to be good, but lately Ive been hearing Alienware is not that great anymore and ASUS certain parts break down pretty fast and their customer service is bad. Are there any good ASUS or Alienwares out now? in the 1,500-1,600 or less range.

Can some people name some good gaming laptops as well as brands, I keep coming across some but then they'll be some sort of error with them.

Memory 8 GB or more with ability to upgrade
Hard drive 750 GB or more
CPU i7 3r d gen.
Graphics Card 2-3 GB or more
Windows
Display 15-17 inch etc.

Although i want a gaming computer i wont be gaming on it much, I just want a gaming computer because they tend to have more memory, and hard drive space etc.

thanks
Thank you both..Alex i had checked that laptop out and i read reviews about freezing and touch pad issues...have you experienced any issues with that? and what yr is your ASUS? are there any others you would recommend?
Also anymore suggestions are appreciated thanks

Answer
The most important factor of a gaming laptop is the graphics processor. The stronger the graphics, the better the gaming unless particularly slowed by the CPU or a ram shortage or other factors.
Video editing needs a lot of ram and a faster CPU. Stronger CPUs and graphics power take more battery power, so if they still have a standard 6 cell lithium ion, a faster laptop has a shorter battery life.
Weight is also a factor in the portability, and many people are more interested in the portability. You get a much more powerful desktop PC with a bigger monitor at the same price as a gaming laptop.
For brand quality and reliability in general, I use the customer survey published annually by PC World magazine. December 2011 is the latest, with this year due out soon.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
Although Macbooks are known as more reliable, their price to performance is terrible. They cost a lot for the CPU and graphics performance level, and the OSX operating system has a smaller list of compatible software. Also, Lenovo has 3 product lines; Essential, Ideapad, and Thinkpad. Thinkpads are considered the most robust and best keyboards and have other excellent characteristics, but they do not get high level graphics because they are business systems.

Most laptops have 2 slots for DRAM. 8GB laptops are generally 2x4GB, and that is usually plenty. The graphics ram is more important to be GDDR5 instead of DDR3 type rather than how much ram. The graphics level is important, but the ram can be shared system ram as DDR3 and so having 2 GB dedicated graphics ram is only really good if it is GDDR5 ram. In DDR3, just add it to the system ram.
You can see a reported CPU and graphics score average at this site on two tabs:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

One of the bargains in the industry is the Lenovo Y580 at Lenovo.com, but shipments are now delayed and prices were increased. They were perfect during black friday sale with $900 price on what is now $1,039.20. There are a few left at resellers.
3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB GDDR5, backlit keyboard, 15.6" screen in 1080p, 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz, 1TB 5400RPM+16G SSD, Blu-ray/DVD-RW, 6 Cell Li-Polymer, 2x2 wireless, bluetooth, HD CAM, HDMI, and a good set of extra features like one button recovery. You would have to wait for delivery. The only thing some people don't like is the screen has glare of overhead or lights behind you, but it has an extra wide color gamat with more accurate reproduction. In stock at Newegg for $1110 is DVDRW instead of bluray and a 750GB with 16GB acceleration SSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310661

The only manufacturers of laptops selling under their own name is Asus and MSI. Laptops are designed and produced by them and Clevo, Wistron, Quanta, Invertec, and a few other manufacturers all in China. The brands are actually just sales and service and procurement organizations doing selection of keyboards, HDDs, LCDs, and other sub-components made by other companies. Lenovo Thinkpad still has design teams some formerly of IBM and a lab for reliability testing in Japan.

At $1210 is an MSI with similar specs to the Lenovo Y580, but in a 17.3" anti-reflective screen, no SSD, and is DVDRW:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152369
You can see gaming performance here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
If not gaming heavily, there would be no need to spend more as it is mostly only moving up the graphics power. Extra ram over 8+2GB is not very important.
I show the full HD 1920x1080 resolution since you are at the price point to get it.

This is a nice choice at Amazon of a Samsung:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Series-NP700G7C-T01US-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0098O6FIU
It's only flaw is bluray and DVD player, but does not show DVD writing. It may have it, but does not state it so probably does not. The color is yellow/orange. The screen is a 17.3" extra bright 400 nit. The HD 7870M is a little better than NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M. It has a 1TB HDD. The Samsung brand is a high quality one. It is heavy at 8.4 pounds.

You can browse around, but if you like the color (see it at various sites for sale by google of the model number), and don't miss DVD writing (you can buy an external one), the Samsung is an excellent choice. Just browse around Newegg by looking at laptops sorted by price at 100 per page, and then select at left the i7, and slidebar for 1920x1080, and parameters of GB of ram and HDD. You can also check Amazon, but they are harder to search.

With the article about quality, a site that shows reported CPU and graphics power and another with gaming by GPU and the places to buy being Newegg, Amazon, Tigerdirect, BHPhoto.com
it is just a matter of deciding what suits you.

I have the samsung RF511 laptop,

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20 GHz 2.20GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System

is it good for gaming?
i can play skyrim in the high quality without any lag, and sims 3 and tomb raider 2013, i can play amazing spider man in high quality (not very high) without lagging.
but there are many games that are so laggy when i play with high graphics i dont why, like gta iv and farcry 3 and nfs mostwanted 2012. are all gaming laptops like that (some games are laggy even it is a high performance laptop)? or my laptop is not so good for gaming?
sorry i forgot to mention Graphics Card: 2gb

Answer
Well to know if it's actually good at gaming you would have to list your graphics card. You certainly have a good enough processor and enough RAM for gaming, but that could mean nothing if you have a really old graphics card.

If you can play Skyrim on high settings without lag, chances are you have a pretty good graphics card though. Things like GTA IV and Far Cry 3 probably require a better graphics card, they must have higher system requirements. Try changing them to medium detail or lowering things like shadow quality, post processing effects and water quality. Those things usually have a huge impact on graphic performance.

How can I go about finding a company, or someone to raise money or donate a computer to someone?

Shelby

My husband has Cystic Fibrosis, he is almost 24 years old and he was given about a year left to live in July of 2012.

Since then he has been trying to make a bucket list of sorts, things he wants or needs, or just would like to have before he passes. He has been an avid video gamer all his life due to his illness, he was never really able to go outside and play, and as he grew up it just got worse and worse until he's almost completely bedridden. So he has always found solace and happiness in being able to play video games, mainly PC games. I want to be able to buy him a desktop and a laptop for when he has to be admitted to the hospital, and he has to stay for a minimum of 1 month, usually more. This is the only dream he can realistically achieve due to the severity of his illness at this point. (His lung function is less than 18%, he cannot move around much without getting severely out of breath)

He was offered to make a "wish" to the Dream Foundation a few months back, but after all the hype, they haven't really been responding to him anymore, so we're starting to feel that it's a lost cause with them.

I definitely do not have the money to buy the gaming laptop/desktop that he needs, even if I were to save every extra penny, it would take more than a year and it could be too late by then.

So I would be so grateful if there is any information on any computer companies or the like, or any sort of foundation or fund that would be able to do this for him quickly, and not take 5+ months. We would be able to provide proof of his condition, doctor's letters etc as well.. Thanks

Answer
Contact the Elfin Society of GE. They are constantly donating Computer Equipment
Or contact YOUR Church and have them solicit the Gates Foundation, Game Stop, Best Buy and so on..
Also try your local library. Gate foundation is always donating new ones to libraries and olds ones are given away.

I already know that laptops are used if you're more mobile but can some one tell me which is best for me? I occasionally go on vacations with my family around 3-4 times a year for about two-three days each trip, so I don't think I would need to bring a laptop with me but I don't know if I should use a computer or a laptop for doing school work and gaming because both are okay with me and I just don't know what to pick. And what are the best brands/certain types of laptops and computers in 2013? If you can, please mention a certain type of product(s). Thank you very much!

Answer
Desktop are better for gaming and will last longer then any laptop out there. Laptops are portable and will last 3 to 5 years depending on how you treat it. Any puter you buy will begin to age out after 3 years because of the march of technology. I know a lot of people who buy new every three years just to stay up with the new advances in CPU and GPU.

I prefer ASUS and HP. ASUS has the best warranty of the market on most of their products. Most of their laptops come with a accidental drop warranty.

If you want ask another question and all of use can provide links to our favorites system to recommend.

Brand buying advise.

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

What makes Vista fast on some computers and slow on others?

Im going to be buying a laptop soon, how can I know what to buy so that it will be one of the computers that runs Vista well and not sluggish?

Answer
Vista runs fast on mid range computers. It runs even better on gaming rigs; this is with all the visuals maxed out.

On a laptop, however, depending on what the specs have, you might have to make some sacrifices with the visuals. If you have a dedicated graphics card then you can do what you want with the visuals.

I bought a laptop last March when Vista was only 2 months old. It ran like a piece of sh*t; even with 2GB RAM and a Core 2 Duo processor. Bear in mind that those two are not the only factors that determine a computer's overall performance.

I downgraded to XP and joined the Vista hating bandwagon. I later installed Vista on my slightly more powerful desktop and Vista ran very smoothly. My conclusion, it's just Vista's fresh arrival in the market.

I last week installed Vista on my laptop again and this time the with the much needed SP1. I disabled some visuals and my laptops runs 5x better than when it had XP on it. Vista is the future and is here to stay. I personally don't even like using XP anymore.

I also have Vista and have been using Vista for nearly a year and a half on my gaming desktop and it runs like a beast. Destroys XP.

What are some good stuff to do while on a bus?

Kevin

Our class will be going on a retreat this March. The travel will time be about ten hours to the place, and I know we'd be spending a lot of time on the bus. I sure don't want to be bored for hours. Could you guys give me ideas to pass time while we're riding? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Read a book.
Read a magazine.
Talk to your friends.
Pash somebody.
Play cards.
Play a handheld console device.
Play on a laptop (with extra batteries).
Listen to MP3s.
Draw.
Write a story.
Write poems.
Perv.
Hold your bladder and bowel contents in.
Play spotto.
Play "I Spy"
Play card games like "Bullshit".
Pick your nose.
Twiddle your thumbs.
Bluetooth your friends.
Shoot spit balls.
Shoot elastic bands.
Shoot a firearm. (Kidding...)
Burp contest.

Whatever you choose to do, you won't be bored. I had to go on a bus trip over 2 days with my swimming club to a competition, and it was the best bus trip I've ever had. We didn't do anything super exciting, its just being with your friends which makes it a great experience.

What if I don't have the recovery CD? I didn't bring it with me when I move out of the country where I bought it.

Answer
Never ever use a registry cleaner. Your computer is full of junk that needs to be gotten rid of. Open the Windows folder in Drive C. Look for the Prefetch folder. Open it and delete everything in it. Then right click on Drive C and do the Disc Cleanup. About all you want checked here to delete is temp internet files and compress old files. Click ok. go to the Tools tab and do the Disc Check (check the second box). This takes a little while. Then do the Defrag. Now, go to pcstats.com Beginners' Guides way down on the right. Start with #78, I think, about services running on your computer. Then go back to 2, 3, 4, and maybe 5. Do this stuff and you will be amazed. Your computer will be better than new. Be careful because they take you into the registry. It's all completely safe. Good luck.

What prograns should I install as soon as I buy my laptop ?

I am getting a Toshiba Satellite laptop for Christmas . It's a gaming laptop , but I am a casual gamer . So I won't only play games on it . I don't want to clutter it up either with random miscellaneous programs that I won't ever use . So basically , what programs should I install on my gaming laptop as soon as I get it ? ( apart from anti-virus )
Thanks

Answer
A torrenting program. Bittorrent in particular, its free, and it allows you to go to sites like thepiratebay and download anything you want. Its pretty awesome. Also, minecraft. Don't know if thats what your asking, but yeah, its a good game. The microsoft office stuff. Skype would be something you need. If you are gonna play multiplayer of any kind, skype is a better mic than the games audio servers. I don't know if you do this or not, but if you record gameplay, camtasia studio/recorder, some kind of movie maker (windows movie maker), audacity. And if you want to play ROM games, visualboy advance. Thats all I use. And my setup is alright.
