I'd use it for games like minecraft and school work mainly.

Answer
There is one laptop from Dell which has the price of around $360. It is really good for students like you for school work. It has good features which includes Intel Pentium Processor 2117U (2M Cache, 1.8 GHz) and 4 GB DDR3 RAM which can handle any work with ease. It has good 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive. It has 15.6-Inch Screen and Windows 8. Also it has 8-in-1 Media Card Reader and 1 HDMI 1.4a.

All of these features you are getting in absolutely affordable price. For further details you can see a good comment from an actual user which describes it as perfect for students:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1N1Q52AD4YH5F/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00AM7MM4I&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=hawmekm-20

So it is affordable and perfect laptop to go for in the category of under $400 laptops. But you can search other ones as well. Here is a list of laptops which are under $400 and popular ones:

I want to buy a budget gaming notebook for round $ 1300. Now i had my eyes on the MSI Gt729 because I really want a mobility hd 4850. I cant seem to find any where else a notebook with this graphic card. My question is will there soon be more notebooks with this graphic card for arround $ 1300 be released ?

Answer
Nice!! I had my eye on it for as long as I could remember, factory overclock on the touchpad, everything.

There where some features that really turned me down, the Keyboard was a BIG ONE, I eventually went with an XPS computer for gaming and that one had a Light-up keyboard that is amazing on the fingers, its very quite.... anyway the keyboard SUCKS!!!.

The laptop there is pretty good and if I needed a gaming laptop right now I would wait, the first 5800 chips roled into the stores last week!!!!

Its only a matter of time till an ATI 5670 hits a laptop for under 1500$ so Wait!! you wont be disappointed.

A few reasons:
DX11 (who cares but still!!)
Latest and baddest is always Latest and baddest, not 2nd rate.
Optimized for Windows 7 (real good reviews--but we shall see!!)
So wait!

is 10mbps enough for 3 people to share on a wifi connection?

I'm considering getting time warner's standard internet (29.99/mo) but want to make sure it'll be enough for 3 people (with 3 laptops) to use for video streaming, chatting, social networking, downloading, and everything else people typically use the internet for nowadays. Is it enough so that the internet maintains a decent speed?

Answer
Its quite enough, but speed might get slower in rate..!!!!

I can imagine several scenarios....

1) I want to sell diamonds to people overseas... but they need to inspect the goods in realtime and in detail. So I need a high definition telepresence with a camera that can handle detail down to a microscopic level. That kind of bandwidth can easily chew through 24 Mbps with a 50 Ms latency. My business will depend on people being able to inspect the goods and be satisfied that they are getting the real deal. They will also want to look me directly in the eye in realtime and see if they can trust me.

2) A doctor in Garunkuwa needs to do some very specialised surgery, so he needs the help of a specialist. The only problem is that the specialist is in Sweden. So they need to hook up a telemedicine connection and maybe also some remote surgery equipment. The specialist in Sweden can now watch the surgery live and if need be assist with the remote robotic arms. Lives are saved.

3) I want to start a business offering live televised Safaris to people who cannot travel to South Africa, but want to see the animals close up, live and in detail. Same scenario... this requires plenty of HD live video transfer.

4) I want to offer the banks a remote backup system than can do live instant real-time system backups. The banks entire customer database runs into the hundreds of gigabytes. How am I going to be able to back up that entire system offsite in realtime before the data changes so significantly that the backup is then already hours out of date?

5) A university wants to offer a course in Astronomy and to hook into several observatories worldwide. They could use the universities own backbone, but that would most likely tie up the entire pipe for an hour or two... or they could use a third party provider to supply the bandwidth needs for the hour of the week that the course is running.

These are all bandwidth demands that are current... not even accounting for future needs. The business opportunities are astounding. People in Europe and the East are already used to doing things on the internet in realtime. If they could do those same things with a connection to Africa, we would be raking in the bucks here. Virtual HD Safaris man... I'm gonna go patent that idea right now.

As the article mentioned:

Faster is better when it comes to WIFI, but some people argue that 10 Mbps may be enough for most residential broadband consumers.

Obviously there are cases where you can use more bandwidth, but these are a select few, and usually not applicable to residential users.
Every one of your examples are for business or scientific applications.

I believe that 10Mbps is more than enough for current WIFI residential use. More would be nice, but not neccesary.

EA might be enjoying their success with Digital distibution, but that also means they must tweak their content to fit the medium. You rarely get any content that requires more than a dual layer DVD, which is 8GB. That's about 2 hours of downloading @ 10Mbps. Hardly a trainsmash. Digital distribution can also cater for selective loads. Distribute the Main engine with enough level content for gameplay to start, and download the rest as the game plays out.

Why do people think that China relies on the West so much?

Mr Miyagi

It is a myth, People must have overlooked the fact that China mines 97% of all rare earth metals, these metals are used in nuclear weapons, cruise missiles, catalytic converters, laptops, wind turbines, engines and just about every new green tech there is among millions of other things. China has restricted exports to Europe and the USA, they have basically played a great game. China has in recent years diversified its investments and they are waiting for the USA to loosen its grip on the mideast and will move in like they have done with south Asia and Africa.
@ Scott - i guess you have not been following how China has diversified their economy - there is no need to get angry it is just the way they have played such a good game.
http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2010-10/officials-claim-chinese-rare-earths-embargo-expands-include-us-and-europe

Answer
China does not need the west at all, it is self- sustainable in everything except petroleum, not like the US which can't even manage to make shoes.

Q. I am in middle school. I am going to use my laptop for school projects, gaming (MW3 etc) on medium to high settings, to listen to songs. My budget is of PKR 50,000-PKR 80,000.

P.S: I live in pakistan and it should have a 10-key Num pad and a HD screen

Answer
I would suggest you to get the new Alienware M11x which is a 11.6 inch laptop that is great for games of course. it costs about 799 US dollars which is the starting price(its the cheapest alienware) so if you cover the price it is PKR 79,093.252 which I think fits into your budget.

Want to buy a laptop from ebay!!! any suggestions for me?

I am planning to buy a labtop from ebay.com but little confused as going to be my 1st purchase online. there are so many same products with huge difference in prices. As I live in pakistan so need to be shipped to Pakistan

Any recomendations or suggestions for me as I was money for last 2 years for this laptop & its realy important for me & dont want to mess the things

Hope you understand

Thanks

Answer
look for system specifications.

Lookat processor speeds, higher number is always better. It is specified by GHZ or gigahertz.

Look at video cards, more videocard ram means better performance, as does mroe stream processors.

Look at RAM (not video card ram this time) higher amount is always better.

Set a price for yourself to not exceed, then try and maximize those numbers.

I would recommend, (should be decent price) something with a 2.4GHZ processor, 2GB of ram, and a "512-bit videocard"

That will be good enough to get most work done, and even handle some lower end games. you cna also get it for around $600 or even lower

What makes alienware the best gaming laptop and is it worth the money?

Lafla

Or are there better gaming laptops?

Answer
Right now, Alienware (Dell) is the only one I have seen to offer the Core i7 920XM, and Dual Graphics Cards running in either SLi or CrossfireX. But, that doesnt justify the price tag to me.

Dropping some of the specs to match what some other companies are offering, dropped the price by about $2000, but...Other companies are offering the same specs for $1000 cheaper. Don't buy the name...Shop around, configure laptops to be identical (or as close as you can get) and compare the prices...get the best deal for your money. When you configure them to be identical...you really see how much you pay for a name.

Answer
walmart tyope stores or ebay.
its worthwhile paying for extra warranty but make sure its got all the ram etc before you leave the store. no good adding stuff later as void the warranty

This is from my notes, hope it helps..
Always work out what your needs are and buy a laptop to suit.

Choosing a laptop
=============
You have to decide on weight and battery criteria.

1. Weight - If you are going to carry it to and fro to school/office then consider getting a lightweight model. An external CD drive may be an option as if you not into burning disks or watching DVD then you hardly use the CD drive. Something about less than 2 kg is a lightweight.

2. Battery Life, - if you never going to use it on batteries then you can go bigger processor and larger screen. You can consider not buying the battery if appropriate. You can have two power supplies; one at home and one in the office is good for large heavy laptops.
If you want to use the laptop on batteries then you may have to choose a smaller processor and a smaller screen so you can get the hours required out of the battery.

3. Minimum specifications â
Games will require more specifications â more ram and âmore video card specs â more processor power.
Generally though:
-a decent video card (for projection of power point presentations)
-Wireless networking
-Ethernet
-Consider a high speed hard drive
- Consider 80GB Hard drive or larger
- Consider an external DVD drive or an Internal Burner -depending on your needs
-Consider 1 Gig RAM for XP or 2 Gig RAM for Vista
-Software able to update from their websites
-Internet security and
-Antispyware (free from net) is a must for internet use.
-Easy accessible USB ports
- built in webcam
- A Mouse
- a keystone lock
-A carry bag. Sometimes the manufacturerâs bag is the best buy

Consider getting the hard drive partitioned to C: and D: The C drive can be 30 gig for a laptop D drive is extended across the remaining.

When looking at laptops in the shop do this:
In Vista click start >control panel >system and support >system

Go through the results you can see what hardware and what Microsoft products are installed in the laptop/ computer.

Google luck!!!

Vista versus XP:
All laptops are sold with Vista on it, it may be wise to get a higher standard Vista eg premium as it may network better.

If you want to install your own XP disks on it first you have to find out if XP has drivers to suit the hardware on your laptop.
Since you paid for your Vista, keep it. In a couple of months it will be the norm and it will be running sweet. There is due a service pack issue in March 08.

If you want to load XP consider partition the Hard drive and dual boot. Google âdual boot vista xpâ for step by step instructions but donât forget a third partition for your files.

What should I do for Christmas this year?

parenting

My kids already have to many toys and clothes. I was thinking of getting them a laptop but hubby veto that idea.

How does new bedroom furniture sound? I could fix up their rooms (which would most likely be a better idea as I plan to sell the house next year)
We did just take a trip to Louisiana but I could take them to my Dad's Lake house.

My kids play ball and catch but not to good at sports they are only 4 yrs, 2 yrs and 5 months old

Answer
So you have an infant to a 4 year old and aren't going to do Christmas for them because "they have enough all ready". I'm sorry but I think it's a bad idea all the way around.
Taking a trip or redoing their rooms at that age is not going to be appreciated. Kids want things they can unwrap and play with not furniture they have to "keep nice" or a trip that they may never remember taking years later. Besides, if you're moving anyway, why sink all the money into redoing any room when you won't be living there and the new owner is likely to change it anyway after they move in.

Your best bit is to go through all the toys they don't play with anymore and donate them long before Christmas. If they are broke or have critical missing pieces, throw them away. Clothing, if you can't reuse it as hand me downs for your younger children and it has no sentimental value to you then donate it as well if it is free of severe wear and stains.

Buy them some new books. New clothing or PJ's for Christmas. Get some toys like an art center, something for outside rather than inside if you are over run in the house. How about new toy boxes with their names on them for their rooms to keep their personal things in? get some board games for kids that are in their age range to play together.
My son has oodles of indoor things to play with but for his birthday in March instead of telling people "don't buy him toys he has too much all ready" we just told them "outdoor toys, swim items for summer or books". Kids like things they can have and open. When they are this young it is more important to them. As for stockings you could always put in some treats, new crayons, coloring books, tub toys (throw out worn out ones that you have at home), things that can go in the car to amuse them with a tote with their name on them to keep in the car with their car toys.

A laptop at their age is a bad idea. It would end up broken and would be a waste for them at their age.

I'm looking for a gaming laptop that's around $1200 or less, preferably something in the Sager or Alienware line but anything that's good is fine, and maybe something that wont be boiling hot after a couple hours of gameplay would be good :).

Answer
Aliewnare laptops are the best gaming laptops. You can take that from me because I did many reviews on the Alienware line of gaming laptops. Any model from Alienware would do but I believe $1200 is not enough since Alienware laptops are so expensive. But if you could spare extra cash, that shouldn't be a problem.

Another good gaming laptop brand would be from Dell. The Dell XPS series are ideal gaming laptops and your $1200 price tag covers a variety of different models.

Toshiba is another good brand which serves for both business and gaming. I prefer the Toshiba Qosmio which is a monster for its wicked sound system and unbelievable performance. But it is a little expensive. The Toshiba Portege should cover your cost.

I am looking for a cheap gaming laptop under $400 that can handle the games released out lately?

Q. I am looking for a cheap gaming laptop under $400 and can be bought at a canadian best buy in Ontario, Windsor. I am looking for something with an intel processor, a built in graphics card and atleast 4GB of memory. It doesn,t have to be able to play everything at max graphics. I really want to hear other people's opinions

Answer
Sorry, there aren't many. i looked for days to find one before, they are just not good enough. the best you can probably get is the Hp probook 4525. it has HD Graphics, i think 2-4 gb of RAM (Memory) but you can fit up to 8GB. it has an AMD processor BUT, its really good. i used it for a while. i know intel is better, but this is the best you can get for now until you can get a high quality Gaming pc. it is around $400- 500 i use the Dell Studio XPS 1640, it is $1200 and really good.

I want an alienware, but I've recently heard that the latest alienwares are getting bad reviews. So what is the best gaming laptop on the market?

Answer
There is also Sager (Clevo) and OCZ, both manufacturers offer laptops among the fastest in the world (Google: Sager NP9262, Sager NP5796 (17", Single Video Card, Single Hard Drive, Dual Core), Sager M860TU (15", Single Video Card, Single Hard Drive, Dual (and maybe Mobile Quad soon) Core), Arima W840 DI / OCZ Whitebook (17", dual video cards, dual hard drives, dual and mobile quad core, Backlit Keyboard, upgrade to an old chassis that Alienware used once, can take ATi Crossfire).

Also, both of those manufacturers are cheaper by thousands of dollars against Alienware, Dell, Voodoo PC, etc... with a better build-quality and experience (Sager has been in the market since the middle 80's).

The fastest gaming laptop in the world is the Sager NP9262, the only Quad Core Laptop in the world (for now, but the only that can take Desktop Quad Cores, for a long time), it can take Dual 9800m GTX's on SLi Configuration (1 GB GDDR3, 112 Shader Processors), which is around 15 - 20% more powerful (single card) than the 8800m GTX (9800m GT) and faster than the 8800m GTX SLi too, it can take up to an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 at 3.0 GHz processor (it can take desktop processors with a TDP under 96W, such as the E6600 / E6670 / E8200 / E8400 Dual Core, and the Q6600 / Q6700 / Q9550 / Q9650 Quad Cores), up to triple 500 GB Hard Drives (5,400 RPM) or 320 GB Hard Drives (7,200 RPM) in RAID configuration (RAID 0, 1 and 5), it can go up to 4 GB at 800 MHz (PC2-6400) at RAM, or 8 GB (around 6 GB are available) at 667 MHz, not even the Alienware m17x is close to touching this beast.

The best Sager Resellers around are Xotic PC and PowerNotebooks, so you might want to drop by their websites to check the many options they have on Gaming Notebooks (Xotic PC carries the Arima W840 DI too, even though it is not a Sager Notebook), also, their customer service is awesome, and Xotic PC offers an extra 2 years on parts warranty with the Sager NP9262 and the NP5796.

You might also want to register at www.notebookreview.com and create a new thread (following the sticky thread guide) in the "What laptop should I buy?" topic, lots of people would be happy to help you choose what is the perfect laptop for you, within your budget also.

What are good specs for a gaming laptop?

Nick

I have a pretty mediocre laptop, and I want to get a new one that works for gaming. What are the specs for a good gaming laptop? I don't want any top-of-the-line laptop that's going to cost a bunch of money. Just specs decent enough to play Starcraft and The Old Republi (when it comes out) without lagging like crazy.

One of my top priorities in my search for a new laptop is the quality of customer service. I'd appreciate specific examples rather than general statements, if possible. Thanks.

I have also read many reviews that the Genius Bar at the Apple Stores is the most knowledgeable of tech support offered in a retail store setting. However, their Tech Support is not cheap, unless you buy a 3-years Service Agreement from Apple.

If Tech Support is your top concern, you may want to look into a Mac. Apple is the biggest personal computer and have the volume to get the best suppliers. Well. Maybe not the suppliers who are best to their own employees.

If you want to stay with Windows, I'd recommend Lenovo because their Thinkpads are still better made than most. Sony as a corporation has lost a lot of business in TV, music players and game consoles and hasn't really put out anything special in computers.

Answer
Generally for performing your tasks it is better to go for a good processor and for multitasking you need to have a good RAM. Both of them makes a laptop good. So by considering both of them I would recommend One of the option for which you can go for is HP Envy dv6 which is latest model of HP and also going very good so far. And it has the price of $699.

It has good features which includes Genuine Windows 8 operating system. It has 3rd generation Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor 2.4GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.40GHz which absolutely fast and powerful. It has storage of 750GB 5400RPM hard drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection. It has 8GB DDR3 SDRAM which is really good memory for multitasking.
Other features include 15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit display (1366 x 768) and 6 Cell Battery which is really good for long battery life, Beats Audio & HP Triple Bass Reflex Subwoofer.

If you think it is a good laptop then here is a comment from an actual user which will help you in further deciding:

I also want to share a list of laptops which comes under your budget of $700 from which you can decide for yourself as well:

Hope so it will help you in deciding and you will get a good laptop according to your requirement.

What is a good cheap gaming laptop?

Q. I would like to buy a cheap, good gaming laptop. Preferably below 500 euros. Any suggestions? It also needs to be available in PAL regions.

Answer
Cheap and gaming are somewhat opposites in the computer world. You get what you pay for. Laptops are not necessarily the best for gaming, the reason being that as games get bigger and more complex your computer starts hitting the wall for speed and performance. Laptops are designed to be small and portable, to do this they have limited what the computer is capable. You lose the upgradability, the thermal solution, smarter power consumption and cheap parts. When choosing a laptop, your going to be looking for a good manufacturer since it is through the manufacturer the computer can be easily fixed and upgraded. Dell is a large company that has good support as long as you keep your warranty, however they have their reputation for cutting corners and low grade. Toshiba is a good company, although they tend to have slightly higher prices.

When shopping for your laptop I would rather suggest looking for computers within your budget, within your desired performance, and then research the reputation of the manufacturer.
Now days a good computer runs at about these specs

3.0 GHz Dual Core (I only shop Intel but that is a matter of preference and opinion)
4Gb of fast ram RAM
100 GB HDD (This is actual storage space, bigger the better but that is counter intuitive with laptops)
Windows 64 bit (With out the 64 bit version you lose the ability to use better hardware and are limited to only 4gb of ram with 32 bit version)
Make sure the laptop has a good thermal solution, if the manufacturer mentions it has a focus on thermal, that should be enough (most ignore it)

That should be all you need to know, ultimately I recommend building a desktop for all of the pros that a laptop doesn't have. Desktops allow you to build your own computer, and at your own price. Usually this is more expensive than buying from a manufacturer but you have the ability to upgrade and swap out parts as you see fit.

I want to buy a cheap gaming laptop and want to know which one to buy?

Francis

I want an inexpensive gaming laptop. I have not purchased a gaming computer before and want one to use when I am away from and at home as I share a desktop with my family. I was wondering which one to buy (I would use it for WoT LoL minecraft TF2) and I don't know much about computers, thanks!

Answer
I bought a cheap Acer Aspire V3-551-7844 model for $399 about a year ago. It works well for gaming, and it great for browsing the internet and it does everything quite quickly. Compared to the other computers for the same cost, it comes with more things than other comparably priced laptops. There is probably a newer model of it that you can look for that may be the same cost as when I bought this.

This computer came with a 2.7Ghz CPU that speeds up to a maximum of 3.2 Ghz when needed.

The graphics are good. For things like Minecraft you will have no problem playing it.There will be no issues running Minecraft on the highest settings. I actually have been playing Arma 2, and Arma 2 works fine but on low-medium graphics settings it runs best. In single player Arma 2 runs fine in the medium/high graphics. The Elder Scrolls Skyrim, works nicely and is just as good as when I had my old Nvidia 8800GT 512mb graphics card on my desktop. Hitman: Absolution runs very nicely on the medium/high graphics. You can play the Bioshock and it looks very nice, and Mass Effect games also. It just runs graphics well for a $399 computer that is 1 year old lol.

6 Gigabytes of DDR3 RAM (and you can have up to 8 Gigabytes total) I bought 4 Gigabytes of RAM and got it up to 8 Gigabytes which helps to make it a little bit quicker.

It has a large 750gb hard-drive.

It has a 15.6 inch HD LED LCD screen which is not too small or too big.

IT has Bluetooth which is handy,

You can probably find a newer version of this computer since it's like a year old now. This has an A6-4400m model processor...If you can get an A-10 series processor and a higher graphics than the ATI Radeon HD 7520g , perhaps something in the 8000's or higher etc that would be nice. But if you do that make sure it has at least 6gigs of RAM and a big enough hard drive for you.

Anyways I'm sure you can find something like this to play games on. AMD are usually better than Intel and Intel doesn't always have graphics that can do anything more than play movies so AMD is usually a safer bet unless you get an Intel laptop with somesort of decent Nvidia graphics inside.

Good luck!

Hey yahoo, i recently purchased a HP DV6 laptop for £550 and although it's fun and all, it's a bit big. is there a way i can sell for around 80-90% so i can buy a smaller alternative?

Answer
The problem some people would say with manufacturers is, they develop products to quickly then five minutes later its obsolete. But manufacturers have to do this and be on the ball five, ten or more years previous to releasing products on the market, so further new technology can be produced with consumer demand.
You now need to move also like the manufacturers 'quickly' so as to sell this product without losing out too much, but its a hard deal to do. There is so many 'cutting each others throat' to sell laptops with similar specs, at rock bottom prices as new releases are nearly every few of months. But there's still hope. One could use Ebay but its a risk of losing through bidding; open an account with Amazon and sell it, but also a risk as you may have to reduce the price over time to sell; Research for other websites using you preferred method of browser engine search that can sell your laptop. Other suggestions maybe a friend or family member would consider buying it, but could risk conflict if something goes wrong. Maybe sell it through a free ad in the local paper using direct attention words such as 'QUICK' sale NEARLY NEW if its a Quad core highlight that or like mine OCTOMultiCore. Use window shop Ad board; but let me bring you down to earth a little; you will only get 40 to 50% maybe 60% of what you paid, because what you want, others are already purchasing. Its very much like a new car once you buy it, it's already lost its value even though it hasn't been driven out the show room; by anything up to or exceeding 25% depending make and model. The same goes with computers, gadgets and pretty much all manufactured goods.
One question why purchase something the same? its a good spec although maybe not so good for top end (Hardcore) gaming. Just because it's smaller just means more money for retailer and less for you :) If your looking something for gaming, media, programming etc build a computer to your own specs like I do and some other "nerds" out there at a fraction of the RRP cost.
Still not convinced?
Lets recap Ebay, Amazon, Gumtree, sell it for cash there's some websites doing this etc, friends & family, Local paper, local shop ad board (Ask first as an Ad may incur a price) or keep it and enjoy it like you say you do.
One last thing, and it may not be what you were thinking off, but I do this from time to time and get a priceless heart warming buzz when I do this, and DV I'll do it again this Christmas also; If you can 'give it away' to someone who would 'really' love it. :)

I've been searching for a while now for a gaming laptop in the price range of 2000-3000 US dollars with at least the option to have a 4 year parts/labor warranty on it. I have looked at Ibuypower and Alienware but both look a little less than optimal on repairs and warranties. Any suggestions?

Answer
Try dell xps laptops. They are much cheaper than2000-3000 dollars but have the option for a great 4 year warranty.

What are some good gaming laptop companies, that are not mainstream like alienware or xps?

I use windows 7 on toshiba lap.

Answer
you can search google for a gadget that shows battery and time left if time doesnt appear when you click on your battery icon in taskbar

let me tell you something, time left depends on your acts, if time shows 2 hours for example while led brightness is low, then suddenly you changed led to high brightness and start music with a 3d game plus downloading file from internet then believe me battery will not stay more that 20 minutes!!!!!!!!

but if you dont do that then time will be correct (not very accurate but some how in range)

if you need more help about batteries and power contact me at maxyoshida@rocketmail.com

What is Steam Punk and how can I get into it?

Ajrah

I have been intrigued in the style of Steam Punk, but other than just normal web searching and such, I don't really know what its about or how I can get into it. Please help?

Answer
Steampunk is sort of mashup of sci-fi and 19th century technology, such as the steam engine and elaborate clockwork mechanisms.

For instance, if you had to build a computer, but were living in 1880, what would it look like? It'd probably look like a huge pipe organ, with more flywheels and belts, for instance.

It's not really it's own genre per se.

If you ever watched the Back To The Future movies, and recall Doc's flying locomotive time machine - that's an example of steampunk, however the movies themselves aren't considered steampunk.

Steampunk has actually been around longer than the actual term has existed. The old TV shows, Wild Wild West (which is what the movie was based on) and The Adventures of County Briscoe Jr. are steampunk. The stories of Jules Verne are the very definition of steampunk. Comics like Girl Genius (read it online for free!) are steampunk. Anime series often have some steampunk elements in them. "Steam Detectives", "Sakura Wars", and "Nadia" come to mind immediately.

If you're into pen&paper RPGs, some systems, like GURPS have some steampunk modules you can look into. Wikipedia has a list of video games that have steampunk elements to them.

People have made some steampunk-inspired projects, such as a steampunk style "laptop" made from an old typewriter keyboard, and a handmade case made of solid oak. Of course, weighing in at over 100 pounds, it wasn't really that portable... Pretty, though.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "get into" steampunk. It's not like a lifestyle or anything - like being goth. At best it's a small sub-genre within the sci-fi/fantasy realm. I have heard of people cosplaying in the steampunk style, which basically involves dressing in 19th century style clothing, maybe with a gadget or something thrown in for good measure. However, short of building your own steam-powered mecha suit (anime is full of these) it's sort of a hard look to pull off convincingly.

I have a pretty new Sony Vaio (F series). It's got decent specs, but not quite good enough to run games like Battlefield 3 on the specs I want. I've built desktops and had extensive experience with that, but never much with laptop hardware. Is it difficult, or even possible to upgrade processor and/or graphics card in a laptop?

Answer
It is possible to upgrade the processor but it's NOT possible to upgrade the graphics card. The graphics card is built in on the motherboard. The processor in some laptops is easy and in some it's hard. In most laptops it's under the keyboard.

How do you upgrade laptop hardware?

Someguy047

Considering getting a gaming laptop, but would like to be able to upgrade it.

Answer
You can upgrade the hard drive, the optical drive and add ram. You might find a useful PCMCIA card- perhaps one that has a serial port. That's about it. You will not change the CPU. Maybe there's an overclocking hack, but it will shorten the CPU life with extra heat.

I have a VAIO laptop model VPCEE33FX. I was wondering if i can change its graphics card instead of buying a gaming laptop. If this is possible, where can i buy one and what other components, if any, do i need (adapters, boards, etc)?

Answer
Not possible. Laptops, except very high-end boutique models, CANNOT have video upgraded. Even if they can, such cards are in VERY limited supply and do NOT have the latest and greatest available, and are VERY expensive (3-4x regular video card costs).
