I'm 16 and I just got a job. I would like to save up to buy a super-powerful gaming laptop. I only care about power, not screen size or hard drive space.

Answer
Since it is going to be a while before you buy, take a look at this ASUS. It will give you an idea of what you should look for. Nividia just released their new graphics chip series 7xx. AMD is gearing up to release their 78xx series. A i7 or i5 Intel CPU should do just fine. You will want a 256 GB SSD for your C drive and a 500GB to a 1TB D drive. In the higher end system a 1080 screen is common. Your choice on it being a 15 or 17 inch.

Brand buying advice

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. My experience with them are limited because the few I worked on made me think they were designed in such a way as it would take a blow torch and a jack hammer just to disassemble them.

Choose wisely.

What can I do during my flight to Hong Kong?

best gaming laptops singapore image

I am going to travel to Hong Kong on July 1. This will be my first international flight, and I'm kind of nervous about getting bored during the 14 hour flight. What are some things I can bring along (or do) to keep me from being bored? I want to bring my laptop, but I'm not sure if I can charge it on the plane. Any ideas?
I am flying with Cathay Pacific Airlines.

Answer
You don't mention the airline you're flying on, but on airlines such as Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines and many others, you will have your own personal entertainment center, with as many as 10-12 movies, dozens of tv shows, over 20 audio channels, and games as well, enough to keep you occupied for the entire flight. Almost all airlines have power ports in business and 1st class, not too many in economy, you'll have to check with your airline. But nothing passes the time away better than sleep, I've flown that route dozens of times and I learned to try and be as tired as possible when I boarded the flight, and was able to sleep 8-10 hrs. every time, it makes the flight go by very quickly, plus you'll feel a whole lot better when you get there. There's nothing like waking up for the meal they serve just before you land after a long sleep. Have fun.
PS. Since you are flying Cathay, if your plane has the "new" economy seats, you will have a power port.

how do i survive a 24 hours plane ride without slitting my wrists?

singapore to newyork.

Answer
Suggestions for a long flight:

Join the frequent flier program for the airline, unless you already belong to a "partner" program. Joining is free and you can do it online.

Check www.seatguru.com for seat suggestions. I usually try to get a window seat on really long flights and gather some extra pillows & blankets to make a "bed" to lean against. Call the airline and request a seat as early as allowed. Also ask if the aircraft has power ports that you can use for i-Pod, etc.

Consider buying membership, a one-day pass or multi-day pass to the airline's lounges (if offered). An example is Delta's SkyClub: http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/airport_information/delta_sky_club/index.jsp Priority Pass also gives access to airline lounges all over the world: http://www.prioritypass.com/

Airlines try to provide good on-board entertainment on long flights, and seat-back video is now almost standard on long flights. Airlines also try to provide decent meals on long flights. Check with the airline to find out what will be available on your flight. For example:

http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/inflight_services/index.jsp

Consider getting a sleep mask (ex. www.mindfold.com) and some earplugs, which may help you sleep (they work for me). Luggage stores and airport shops also sell sleep masks but they are not as good as the Mindfold type. Try to sleep â even if it isnât very good sleep.

I-Pods and portable game devices are great on planes, but the batteries won't last more than a few hours. Pack one or more books that you have started, or that are from an author you know. It's really annoying to realize - too late - the book you brought for the flight isn't a good read. Other options are crossword puzzles and similar. A laptop is practical IF the aircraft is equipped with power ports (which can also re-charge an i-Pod or game device).

Pack a complete change of clothes and basic toiletries in your carryon bag. Check the security requirements at: www.tsa.gov

Dress in comfortable clothes and shoes that are not too tight (or overly casual). Your feet will swell during a long flight and tight clothes can make it harder to sleep.

I try to shower just before leaving to go to the airport. It reduces the grungy feeling you get by the end of a long flight.

Tag all of your bags (inside and outside) with your name, e-mail address (but not your home address) and a complete phone number someone will answer. The free tags from the check-in counter are fine.

Make sure you have your passport or ID and other documents on you before leaving home.

Get to the airport 2 full hours before departure unless the airline recommends arriving earlier.

You can take something to help you sleep, but try it first. Many meds can leave you groggy long after you need to be awake. I just use aspirin.

Chewing gum can help with relieving the pressure in your ears.

Drink lots of water and juice: The air in the cabin is very dry and causes dehydration. Avoid too many drinks with caffeine (including colas) or alcohol as they can increase the dehydration.

Get up and stretch every few hours.

Try to awaken about an hour before the flight crew serves the arrival meal/snack and use the bathroom to wash up. Also maybe change clothes. You will feel a lot better.

The time change can be a problem, and a long flight will produce a lot of "jet-lag". At your destination, try very hard to eat meals at local times and stay awake until local bedtime. If you MUST take a nap, then sleep for no more than 3 hours. Falling asleep at 3:00pm may result in you waking up at Midnight - wide awake and unable to go back to sleep.

I hope you have a great trip!

How do I change my Windows 8 laptop back to Windows 7?

best gaming laptops may 2012 on ... Guide - Find the Best Laptops & Best Desktops - Computer Shopper
best gaming laptops may 2012 image

jr5622

I have an HP 2000t Laptop that I purchased in September 2012. When I bought it, the operating system was Windows 7. I upgraded it to Windows 8 (big mistake) in November. I hate Windows 8 and want to go back to Windows 7. I've talked with Microsoft support about this, but they're no help. Any ideas? Thanks!
- I DO have the Windows 7 recovery discs from HP
- I don't just miss the old start menu. It's everything else, too
- Do I just restore it and then put in the W7 discs? (And how to do that?)

Thank you!

Answer
You probably miss the good old Start menu. Although Microsoft replaced the classic Start Menu with a new tile-based Start Screen on Windows 8, there are several ways to bypass that and get your Start Menu back on Windows 8 desktop. You may try any one of these applications:

Here are some of them:

1. Start8 -- http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/
For only $5, you get a full-fledged Start menu replacement that fits in with Windows 8's more "flat" theme, though you can also choose a theme with more rounded corners like the old Windows 7 start menu. You can also set the Start button to launch a small version of the Start screen, so you can get the benefits of the Start menu with the features of the new Start screen.

2. Classic Shell (Free) -- http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/
Classic Shell starts off looking like an old school pre-XP Windows Start menu, but you can switch to a more XP- or 7-style Start menu with the press of a button.

3. StartMenu8 (Free) -- http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php
Install it, and you'll have your old Start menu backâthat's it. It feels a little different than the others (it's more of a popup than a menu), and it has a somewhat annoying "Send Feedback" button, but it does the job without any complicated configuration menus. The only options it hasâwhen you right-click on the Start buttonâare to run it at startup and to skip the tiled Start screen. This is the best option if you just want to install something for free and get on with your day.

4. Pokki (Free) -- https://www.pokki.com/windows-8-start-menu
Search for apps, control panels, and files. Add your favorite apps, sites, files and folders for quick access. Boot to the desktop and skip the Windows 8 Start Screen. Disable Windows 8 hot corners on the desktop and more. Get free apps and games from the included Pokki App Store.

5. ViStart (Free) -- http://lee-soft.com/vistart/
Enhance your windows start menu with Vistart 8. With cool custom start menu skins like the windows 8 start menu metro skin, start menu buttons and lot's of extra features. The ultimate start menu for Windows 8 and compatible with Windows 7, Vista and XP you can download for free. So get your start menu back in windows 8 or replace your start menu in windows 7, Vist or XP.

Some users have said that the best among them are Start8 and Pokki.

If you are still not happy with any of the alternatives above then you can go back to Windows 7 by using a Windows 7 installer disc or flash drive to format the hard drive and do a clean install of the OS including the drivers and applications. Which Windows 7 edition and version did you have on that laptop?

Most reliable laptop brands: the results

Apple tops the list, as might be expected from such a premium PC builder. Apple products are far from cheap, but they do offer a quality experience. Runner up Dell has a very different business model. It, like other high-ranking brands HP and Asus, operates as a volume laptop maker, selling many thousands of laptops every week. We would expect to see them, and Lenovo, high up in our list because they sell so many PCs: but their higher ranking suggests a lot of satisfied customers.

Apple: 19%
Dell: 12%
Asus: 11%
HP: 11%
Acer: 9%
Lenovo: 9%
Toshiba: 9%
Samsung: 7%
Sony: 6%
Alienware: 3%
Fujitsu: 1%
MSI: 1%
Panasonic: 1%
I do not agree with this. But this was the results of a large survey...

Can you make folders on Acer Iconia tablet?

Like how you can group games together on Ipod Touch? I want to do that on my Acer Iconia A100 Tablet. And how they have the folder for Multimedia, and such on the Acer tablet, I want more of those basically. I tried a couple apps that didnt work. Any tips?

Answer
Acer, you know them. You love them; you have trusted them for years. Acer is a Taiwanese based Hardware Company that has been pumping out amazing computers, monitors and everything in between since 1976. With the recent market push into mobile computing it may seem that Acer did not bit as hard as some of their competitors. However, with the likes of devices such as the Acer Liquid Metal, the Acer Stream and the WP7 ready Acer Allegro itâs pretty obvious the company can make some very nice handsets. But Acer has also been producing tablets under the Iconia Tab moniker and it looks as if the company may have broken the mold, and I donât mean by adding a QWERTY to a slate.

With the tablet market slowly pushing out the likes of the desktop, more and more options have been showing up. Outside of the Amazon Fire the market for the 7 inch tablet seemingly does not have a ring leader. The 10 inch space is surely dominated by the iPad and until they offer up there rumored 7 inch tab itâs an open market to do what you will with the bottom line. The Acer Iconia Tab A110 is here, to do just thatâ¦maybe. Computex 2012 has shown off some great technological goodies from laptops to desktop and of course, tablets. The Acer Iconia Tab A110 was shown off at the conference and is set to murder any slate in the under $200 price range. The A110 is a 7 inch tablet that sports a 1024Ã600 pixel resolution at 170 pixels per inch. Inside the Iconia Tab A110 starts with a class leading NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad core processor that clocks in at 1.2 GHz. Delving a bit deeper on the specs sheet, the Iconia Tab A110 will have 8 GB of internal flash memory and 1GB of DDR3 RAM. You can also expect details like a huge 3420 mAh battery, a 2 mega pixel front facing web camera only, micro USB 2.0, HDMI output, expandable micro SD memory up to 32 GB and connectivity like, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. The Acer Iconia Tab A110 should start appearing for consumption sometime in Q3 this year and be priced at less than $200 bucks; essentially trying to tame the Fire that is Amazon.

A quad core, Android 4.0 seven inch tablet for under two hundred dollars, any takers? The Iconia Tab A110 is a bit thick at 11.4 mm and surely could be improved in a few areas, but under $200 bucks makes this a sweet deal even with all that bezel. So let us know what you think of the new Acer Iconia Tab A110 in the comments below. And remember folks, the very best in mobile accessories is right around the corner.

I have this computer since November of 2011, around 7 month from now. So its been working fine and i was really happy about it until 2 days ago. I was able to play starcraft 2 on a 59 fps constant for 7 month until 2 days ago when it suddenly dropped to 30 fps. Im also experiencing fps drops in modern warfare 2 too, which it ran smoothly before. I defraged my computer, delete all the unecessarey things, updated my graphics card, and used CC cleaner, but still it remains the same.
here are my computer specs
-Intel Core i7-2670QM
-CPU @ 2.20GHz
-8.0GB Ram
-Nvidia Geforce GTX 560m
-duel core processor

so i really dont know what the problem is here. i had this computer for 7 month and during that time period, everything was fine. my friend said it can be my internet effecting the gameplay, but i doubt it. thanks for replying i appreciate your help.
Oh btw its a gaming laptop.

Answer
Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your laptop on.

Boot in "safe mode". As it starts up press F8, the computer ask you if you'd like to start in safe mode. Highlight "safe mode" and press enter. See if your laptop is booting up ok .

If your laptop boots ok, do the following,

Try System Restore first,
Start Menu->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. Choose the most recent date before you the encountered problem. If it doesn't work, try the next date.

If System Restore does not fix it, as a last resort, you might need to fdisk, reformat your laptop hard disk clean and reinstall OS, that usually fixes all bugs. Before going that route, try following,

Uninstall unnecessary programs and applications.

Scan with a antivirus program

Scan with a spyware/malware program

DEFRAG C:

CHKDSK C:

Clean up and repair registry problems with registry repair software of your choice

If the problem persists, did you check if it could be your laptop power cord or power source problem? Defective or insufficient power supply might cause error messages that are misleading. Take the battery out and power on your laptop with the charger only. Make sure your laptop power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Did you notice the power jack loose? You can find laptop power jack on ebay. Fixing and soldering the power jack requires professional skill though. The charger green/blue LED should be on. If not, replace the defective charger. laptop battery charger, especially its power cord/cable, lifespan is limited and does not last forever, consider buying a lifetime warranty charger online from company like topmic

Can I save $30,000 in three years in the United States Army?

Q. I am 18 years old and I am going in to the United States Army in November of 2011. I am going in as an E-3 so I will be getting paid at E-3 right off the bat. My contract is 3 years. I want to save at least $30,000 so when I get out I can buy a house. I am not going to put all $30,000 down on the house because I will be using the VA loan. My plans are to save every penny I get. The only money I will spend will be on the stuff that I have to spend money on. For example, Hair cuts, tooth paste, toilet paper, etc.. I have a car that is already paid for, I am single (yes I realize that single guys spend lots of money in the army but I rather not) I have a laptop, I plan on staying on base and eating on base. I am hoping that the base that I am stationed on will have a library and I can spend most of my time in there either spending time on computer games or working on school work seeing I can go to school for free. Do you think that this is possible?

I wrote out a short plan and this is what I figured.
I will make $1,730.00 a month (before taxes)
I will make $20,760.00 per year (before taxes)
I will have $62,280.00 after 3 years (before taxes)
So what I did was instead of taking out a percentage for taxes per year I just took 1 years salary from the army and gave it back to them. So I think that after 3 years I will have $41,520.00 (if I dont spend anything) Does this seem/sound realistic? All opinions and thoughts are accepted. Thanks.

Answer
Your plan sounds legit but what you didn't take into account is your going to spend money.... I promise you that... especially if you get stationed in germany... we like to live the good life and Soldiers know how to party. In three years, you will most likely get on one deployment and that's where your going to make your 30,000 and save it. The army is stressful at times and partying when the day is over is an Army tradition. So don't worry about the saving part is 30,000 is your goal. You will be able to save that with a deployment.

Answer
You are getting a new laptop and want everything off of this one? Don't even bother working with this one then. Simply get your new machine and a 2.5 inch external USB or eSATA case to put the drive from your current laptop in and then attach the old drive to the new laptop as a slave. Simply copy everything you need directly from one drive to the other. This way you don't have to try to deal with the issues you are dealing with on the old one.

As far as this new machine you are getting ... perhaps this will be of some help to you?

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.
Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.
Sony hardware has generally been good, but they are notorious for putting huge amounts of crapware/bloatware on machines and gathering information on their consumers without their knowledge or permission.
Toshiba has bottomed the rankings. Personally, I have used them and never had a problem, but that does not appear to be the case any more.

What's a reasonably good gaming computer for a reasonable price?

Nickolas

Hi,
I'm looking for a good gaming computer for a good price. I'm also thinking of "building" my own computer. So, if you could recommend a good computer or a good processor and/or graphics card. The furthest extent of the games that I'll be playing would probably be Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Loadout, The Ship, and maybe Team Fortress 2 and Garry's Mod. I'm not asking for a top-of-the-line gaming computer. Nor, the latest and greatest parts. If you would kindly recommend a reasonable computer and/or parts for these games, that would be great. If it could also be less than $500 in total, that would be awesome. Also, I don't care if it's a laptop or a desktop, as long as it works well and is within my budget, that's awesome as well.
Thank you,
Nick
I already have a PS3, and have a enough money tucked away for the PS4. I travel a fair bit(a couple times a week, but just to friends houses). A laptop would be nice and convenient, but it needs to be within my budget and can work well. If it needs to be a desktop, so be it. Thanks for the specs and recommendations, I'll be sure to look out for that.

Answer
Laptops are never considered as gaming accessories, it is only for those gamer's who are on the move and also like to play games while traveling. I personally own both a Sony Vaio Laptop ( which is still good for new games on medium settings) and a intel core i5 gaming rig.

When you are thinking about buying or building a custom end gaming pc.you have to keep some things in mind.

1. What is my budget?
2. Should i only be doing gaming on my pc or other side work too?

You have to Check for below things when buying or building a gaming pc.

1. A good Graphics Card ( This is my first Priority, I will recommend go for Nvidia or Ati ).
2. A bigger RAM ( 8 GB to 12 GB will be enough to run games in optimal settings ).
3. CPU ( Central Processing Unit : a intel core i3 or any other with same or greater performance ).
4. HHD ( Hard Disk Drive : Above than 200 GB you can go higher depending on your budget ).

The same requirements are for laptops too.

You can check website like Amazon, Best Buy and Ebay ( Ebay is particularly good if you are low on budget, but be careful while buying and always select seller that are in your country and have good ranking and reviews ).

I have a advice you mentioned your budget is $500 why don't you consider buying a next gen gaming console like Xbox One or PS4.

Because a Powerful Gaming PC/laptop has one downfall. You have to keep it upgraded as new games comes in the market. While a Console have no such issue. All new games don't require general requirements for a Console you can play any game you want till a new console comes in which is pretty much not happening soon after PS4/Xbox One.

Take a look at the gap:

PS1 release date : 1994
PS2 release date : March 4, 2000
PS3 release date : November 11, 2006
PS4 expected : November 2013
PS5 maybe : 2019-2020

same goes with Xbox One with little difference.

Each PlayStation has a Gap of 6 year's. That mean Buy a PS4/Xbox One and forget about spending money for next 6 year on another PS/Xbox Console.

What is better a computer or a laptop?

Connor

Ok so i need a new computer of some sort.

My current one is ancient and as good as dead the speakers don't work my mouse is almost dead and my keyboard is ancient too. I thought getting a laptop would solve a lot of these issues including space issues that i also have in my tiny room.

But then my friend said that laptops cant play computer games (like Minecraft) very good so im starting to wonder what i should get a more up to date tower computer or a laptop (i game a lot)

Answer
You can easily play games like Minecraft on laptops. My friends and I do, all the time. You just need to find a computer will a good processor, graphics card and you'll want one will a lot of memory.
Laptops are great because you can't take them anywhere, but they are definitely not better than a desktop. Computers are a lot more powerful, and are a lot easier to customize. I don't know how old you are, but if your going to college soon or are in college, a laptop will be the best choice, until you get older and settle in one spot.

If you don't mind spending a lot of money.... get a gameing laptop.

Things to look for in a laptop good for gaming:
-A CPU 3.0 GHz+ (both Intel and AMD are great)
-Dual Core or Quad Core CPU
-Fast Front Side Bus (part of Motherboard)
-DDR3 RAM
-SATA Hard Drive
-250+ Gb Hard Drive
-Drive Speed of 7200 rpm (there is a faster speed, but it heats up faster, so it isn't great)

Is This A Good Budget "Gaming" Laptop?

Tech Wiz

The reason I have the " around gaming is because it's a gaming laptop I just want to know if it could run crysis 2 or MW3 on medium settings. My setup is:

Processor: Intel Core i5 Dual Core (2nd Generation) 2430M 3GHZ (3MB L3 Cache)

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000

Ram: 4GB

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64BIT)

Here are links of people playing crysis on all high settings and I didn't know if they are actually played with this graphics card.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g00Y5K-SE-4 ( Hes just got a slightly different processor but the same graphics card )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAPErc8o8os&feature=related

Also I wasn't home and my mom went looking for laptops and the manager at staples said this card is not built into the motherboard which if it was it would be integrated. I told my mom that if wasn't built into the motherboard it was dedicated, but then I thought it could also be in the processor. So another question is, is the graphics card dedicated or built into the processor.

Answer
Intel HD Graphics 3000 is integrated graphics. Quote: With Sandy Bridge, Intel has incorporated the graphics processing unit onto the same silicon as the CPU cores. The GPU communicates with the CPU cores along the high-speed ring bus and shares the L3 cache with the CPU cores.
You'd be better off with a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. Here's an article to read:
http://www.bestgaminglaptop.net/articles-guides/laptop-graphics-card-top-10/
It states that if you don't have a graphics card as least as good as the cheapest on this list, forget about Crysis 2.

I am in the market for a new gaming computer. I was just wondering what is better for gaming a laptop or a desktop.
I mainly play Call of Duty games online. I have good internet but the computer itself is slow.

Desktops get you more performance for your dollar vs. laptops.

Why do gamers spend thousands on gaming desktops and laptops instead of buying an Xbox or Playstation?

John

I've seen some gaming laptops selling for around 4000.00 US dollars. Why are they better than a 300.00 Xbox? Especially with the rumors that the new Xbox will have 16 cores. I can see spending thousands if you need Microsoft for heavy duty video editing and similar stuff like that. Thank you

Answer
Off the top of my head:
higher framerates, higher resolutions, player mods, mouse and keyboard, more games, game prices tend to start lower and drop more quickly, different games...

I have yet to play a rumor that works better than my inexpensive desktop.

Personally I think gaming laptops are foolish, high end graphics cards produce a lot of heat, something a laptop is poorly suited to dealing with. Way more expense for similar performance in a laptop vs desktop as well.

There are ways in which consoles are better, but development has seemingly shifted away from some of those strengths (couch co-op games where have you gone?)

Mac or pc when it comes to computer lifespan?

anonymous

I usually buy dells. I had a dell laptop from 2005-2009 but it was really only functional until 2008. I bought a studio xps in the spring of 2009 and was really happy with it. the warranty (which covers everything including accidentals) expires in June 2012, and i can tell the computer is already starting to go. It freezes all the time and is beginning to run slowly. I know I am going to need a new computer soon, but have always felt that macs were overpriced. have those of you with macs experienced the same thing, or do they generally last longer than pcs? if i buy one through my school i can get accidental warranty, so is a mac really worth it?
I should probably add I am a student in the medical/life sciences.

Answer
A Dell XPS just 2 and a half years old should not be "already starting to go". Take it to someone who knows what they are doing and they will clear some of the horrible software you've got running and get it back up to speed.

Nearly all computers, Macs, Windows, Linux, whatever, are replaced not because of any hardware failures but because they are no longer capable of running newer software. So long as you're not a hard-core gamer or running molecular simulation software, there's no reason you shouldn't keep that XPS for at least another 3 years.

you get what you pay for basically with computers. I also suggest not buying based on the design of computer. Its the fast hardware that you should be paying for not all the fancy keyboards and design.
good brands to look at are dell (http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15r-5521/pd?oc=fndou23b&model_id=inspiron-15r-5521&), sony (http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666519903), and lenovo (http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/z-series/), they usally are the top competitors.

Should I get a Ps4 or a new laptop?

Carl

I've got a ps3 that I love playing but is the ps4 really worth to buy on release? I mean i'll still be able to play the upcoming games this year on the ps3 right? My laptop is somewhat shitty and I'm not able to decide.

Any thoughts?

Answer
If you are a huge fan of gaming you should probably get a PS4. If you want it buy Launch Day order it quick! There's limited orders!

PS4 has an Internet Explorer app BTW.

If you use internet a lot and go on Youtube, Facebook, Reddit, you should probably get a laptop and wait for the PS4.

What is a reasonably priced gaming laptop?

best gaming laptop quality image
Q. My old laptop reaching the end of its life and I am due for a new laptop, and I'd like a gaming laptop (as that is what I do mostly on my laptop now).
I am looking for a reasonably priced one it possible; I do know gaming laptops are more pricy that most. I'd prefer to not spend more than $1500 on one, but if need be I am willing. If you know f a good one cheaper than that that's better!
Thanks in advanced!

Answer
These are all good options:

**Lenovo IdeaPad Y580** (i7-3610QM, NVIDIA GTX 660M, 15.6" 1920x1080 glossy display) - **$949 + tax**
- Sign up and sign in here: http://shoplenovo.i2.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/na/StdAffinityPortal/en_US/Lenovo:EnterStdAffinity?affinity=barnesnoblegold (Barnes and Noble Gold discount page)

- These models come with the 1920x1080 display. There are other models that come instead with a 1366x768 display, but those models are not recommended unless you need the larger text. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to have very poor image quality due to low contrast.
- Click the green "Activate eCoupon" button in the cart.
- Note: the GTX 660M is not significantly faster than the GT 650M.

**MSI GE60** (i7-3610QM, NVIDIA GT 650M, 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display) - **$1099 no tax**

- Select Windows 7 under Operating System if you cannot acquire your own copy for cheaper.
- Recommended: Matte display option.
- Note: the GTX 660M is not significantly faster than the GT 650M.

**Sager NP9130** (i5-3210M, NVIDIA GTX 670M, 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display) - **$1095 no tax**
- http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9130-clevo-p151em1-p-4340.html?wconfigure=yes
- Select Windows 7 under Operating System if you cannot acquire your own copy for cheaper.
- Downgrade the memory to 8GB 1333MHz, unless you have a particular need for 8GB 1600MHz memory. (Only available on XoticPC configuration page).

**Sager NP9150** (i7-3610QM, NVIDIA GTX 675M, 15.6" 1920x1080 glossy display) - **$1405 no tax** (w/ GTX 670M: $1308)

- Take note of the GPU options, and note that the stock GTX 670M is available in the cheaper NP9130.
- Recommended: Matte display option.
- Downgrade the memory to 8GB 1333MHz, unless you have a particular need for 8GB 1600MHz memory.
- Note: comes with a colored backlit keyboard unlike the NP9130.
- 17.3" version: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np9170-gaming-laptop-clevo-p170em-p-4342.html?wconfigure=yes

Note: Another answer here recommended the "ASUS N56VZ-ES71". This model is not a good option, because it comes with a 15.6" 1366x768 display. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to have very poor image quality due to low contrast. It also has the slower GDDR3 version of the GT 650M instead of the GDDR5 version, but it's still a decent GPU.

The N56VZ is a good option if you buy the N56VZ-RB71 which comes with a 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display, but the N56VZ-ES71 is a bad option.

What is the best gaming laptop money can buy as of today?

Core i7 3630QM(2.40GHz) 17.3" 16GB Memory 256GB SSD 750GB HDD 7200rpm GeForce GTX 670MX LED 3D 120Hz 1920 x 1080 1 Year Accidental Damage/30-Day Zero Bright Dot

How do you convince your parents to buy a gaming laptop?

Kairi Hito

Well, we saw a an asus g74 gaming laptop for under $900 on e-bay. We brought it on my aunt's account but we used my mom's credit card for it, but the money never transferred. My boyfriend said it was because my mom had to use/make her own in order for the payment to be successful.

We did made my mom her own e-bay account but we did not make a paypal account for her just yet. As soon as we were about to make my mom's paypal account. My aunt logged into her account on her phone kicking mom's account out on my computer and signing my aunt's account in the computer.

Things got confusing because every time we did something e-bay kept switching the two accounts around for a good few seconds then stopped. After everything seems to be back in order we went ahead and tried to re-order the computer on my mom's account but paypal said wrong password or user name. My aunt got a bit furious and it was stressing both me and my mom out. We tried about four times then went on with my aunt's doing the same thing to her as well.

She then went onto yahoo to get a verification email from e-bay in order to reset her password. However, instead of saying her original username for e-bay with password reset verification. It gave her my mom's user name instead. She got mad and said someone had messed up her account and pointed fingers at me and my sister when we said that we did not even touch her paypal account.

Another thing had happen when we logged into paypal, my aunt had to re-enter her 1st security code in but it kept failing. But when I put in the security code. The 1st security code in for my mom's yahoo account. It logged in successfully, giving her further proof/believing that I messed up her account.

We have been fighting with e-bay with three days trying to buy that computer. The seller said he would re-list the computer on the site and he did. We re-brought it on my mom's account. My mom got a phone call from her bank saying that money has been transfer. My aunt gotten confused again and tried to re-log into paypal with the order saying "completed."

My aunt then told my mom to call the bank up and ask for a refund. My mom did so without telling me what was going on. My aunt had said we had to wait 6 days for mom to get money back, so we cannot buy anything on e-bay. Today is the 5th day and I asked my mom a question and she said that the seller has refunded the money back to us since we were having so much problems.

Me and my sister is really upset about this, we have the money for that laptop but the only one who can order it for us is our mom and aunt, but they suggested on finding another gaming laptop with that same price. I told them that they will not see another gaming laptop with that same price and they should have let someone else in the family who order a lot of stuff online order the laptop for us.

We tried everything and nothing seem to have worked. I kept getting into constant arguments with my aunt and I felt like we wasted that seller's time... Is there anyway I can convince them to give it one last try?
At the first question: I am 19 years old, I have the money for that computer. However my mom is buying the computer for me and I will pay her back. A gaming laptop is FINE for me why is that? It is because the programs I run are to difficult for a normal laptop to handle. Gaming computers/laptops = High performance computers. My boyfriend builds gaming computer and go to school for it. So I know what I am talking about when I want to buy a gaming laptop.

At the second question: I am having that same type of way. My boyfriend said the exact thing you said before I went to yahoo answers to have my question solved. However I just recently talked to my aunt, she said that the seller for the computer has refunded our money and we have to wait 6 days for the payment. I am confused about this? Should I just call e-bay and paypal up to let them know what is going on?

Answer
I don't know how old you are, but if you are anywhere under the age of 18, you should NOT have a gaming laptop. You just don't need one. An everyday laptop will do.

However...

If your family is just rich to have have enough money to buy you a gaming laptop, then you should be spending your OWN MONEY!

My laptop video card isn't enough to run GTA 4. Can I do what I stated above. Also if possible, can I have a price range?

Answer
No. Laptop video is generally not upgradable. External options do exist, but you need a Expresscard slot, an Expresscard, a PCI-Expressx16 adapter, an external power supply (500W or so), and then an external video card. With all those cables, adapters and power supplies, might as well have bought a desktop in the first place then. External video for laptops is just not all that practical.
http://www.techradar.com/news/computing-components/graphics-cards/how-to-make-an-external-laptop-graphics-adaptor-915616

In most cases, it is cheaper to sell the existing laptop and buy either a gaming laptop, or a desktop that can be upgraded to a gaming machine. Those laptop adapters are also slow compared to a real PCI-E x16 slot in desktops, they usually run at x1 speeds. You cannot run a high end gaming card, even with those external adapters

Why do Sega not produce Games consoles anymore?

PB47

Also why hldid nintendo go for a different market with the nintendo wii? Can you see another manufacturer coming into the game console market, e.g Apple?

Thanks!

Answer
SEGA dropped out of console manufacturing simply because:
1) Their previous consoles sold so poorly (SEGA CD, SEGA Saturn, SEGA Dreamcast,)
2) The Dreamcast in particular was a pretty decent system that had a VERY big flaw: The discs had NO copyright protection whatsoever which lead to mass pirating. Which caused many developers to pull away from developing games for it. The only companies that did were those who were under contract to do so, this is a big reason why allot of Dreamcast's later games were ported to the PS2 (as they made little revenue on the DC.)
3) The release of the PS2. If anything, it was Sony's console that brought down the final blows. Nintendo had NOTHING to do with it as their own system (the Gamecube) was also suffering.
4) They actually were making more money from games they helped make as a third party developer. In fact they did so well from 99 - 05 that they've become a mainstream developer.

*The Professor* SEGA never went bankrupt (came close though.) What they did was shift from hardware to software development.

The Apple did actually try to release a console called the Pippin in the early 90s.
http://www.howtogeek.com/trivia/what-was-the-name-of-apples-failed-game-console/
It failed miserably. They haven't bothered since, plus with the success of the IPOD & IPAD they've felt little need to go there again. And NO, the IPAD is not "like" a console. That's like saying a car is "like" a skateboard, An IPAD has more in common with a laptop than it does with a home console.

Systems in development:
Valve's "Steambox" is looking more and more like reality as recent new confirms that they are indeed making a "steam-like" console.

The ouya - An Android based console. But is unlikely to be a mainstream release.

Has about 6 months remaining on warranty.

I ask because I planned on selling it and wanted to get a fair price for it. Most informative/ helpful answer gets 10 points!

Answer
Looks like Amazon is selling them used for $1450. You'll have to sell for less than that because your return policy isn't quite as good as Amazon's, so people are more likely to buy from Amazon than from you. You might get $1200 if you're lucky.

What computer can run newer game titles on medium settings? (cheapest option)?

Matthew

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop.... it's hell to play Planetside 2, Call of Duty, Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 3, and pretty much any modern game. For my next upgrade, I want a computer that's not too much (preferably below $1000) money.
I would like to avoid building a computer, but if it's really all I can do for my price range I can get a friend to help me.
I know this price range isn't optimal but I figure there has to be something out there that's right for me. Again, not looking to completely max out the graphics, but just to be able to run the game from 30-60 FPS around medium settings.

Answer
My combo is an AMD FX-4100, EVGA GTX 560 SE, and 8GB 1600MHz RAM. The total build was $750 back in July 2012. It runs Skyrim maxed out with no lag. Planetside 2 runs maxed out without too much lag (definitely playable). Crysis 3 got about 50 FPS on all medium settings with anti aliasing. Crysis 2 had almost no lag at all maxed out. So get an FX-4300 with a GTX 650 Ti (BOOST if you can afford it, and 8GB RAM.

How do I know the remaining time my laptop will cover to turn off on battery?

I use windows 7 on toshiba lap.

Answer
you can search google for a gadget that shows battery and time left if time doesnt appear when you click on your battery icon in taskbar

let me tell you something, time left depends on your acts, if time shows 2 hours for example while led brightness is low, then suddenly you changed led to high brightness and start music with a 3d game plus downloading file from internet then believe me battery will not stay more that 20 minutes!!!!!!!!

but if you dont do that then time will be correct (not very accurate but some how in range)

if you need more help about batteries and power contact me at maxyoshida@rocketmail.com

What is Steam Punk and how can I get into it?

Ajrah

I have been intrigued in the style of Steam Punk, but other than just normal web searching and such, I don't really know what its about or how I can get into it. Please help?

Answer
Steampunk is sort of mashup of sci-fi and 19th century technology, such as the steam engine and elaborate clockwork mechanisms.

For instance, if you had to build a computer, but were living in 1880, what would it look like? It'd probably look like a huge pipe organ, with more flywheels and belts, for instance.

It's not really it's own genre per se.

If you ever watched the Back To The Future movies, and recall Doc's flying locomotive time machine - that's an example of steampunk, however the movies themselves aren't considered steampunk.

Steampunk has actually been around longer than the actual term has existed. The old TV shows, Wild Wild West (which is what the movie was based on) and The Adventures of County Briscoe Jr. are steampunk. The stories of Jules Verne are the very definition of steampunk. Comics like Girl Genius (read it online for free!) are steampunk. Anime series often have some steampunk elements in them. "Steam Detectives", "Sakura Wars", and "Nadia" come to mind immediately.

If you're into pen&paper RPGs, some systems, like GURPS have some steampunk modules you can look into. Wikipedia has a list of video games that have steampunk elements to them.

People have made some steampunk-inspired projects, such as a steampunk style "laptop" made from an old typewriter keyboard, and a handmade case made of solid oak. Of course, weighing in at over 100 pounds, it wasn't really that portable... Pretty, though.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "get into" steampunk. It's not like a lifestyle or anything - like being goth. At best it's a small sub-genre within the sci-fi/fantasy realm. I have heard of people cosplaying in the steampunk style, which basically involves dressing in 19th century style clothing, maybe with a gadget or something thrown in for good measure. However, short of building your own steam-powered mecha suit (anime is full of these) it's sort of a hard look to pull off convincingly.

Markiepoo

I am looking for the best gaming laptop for around 1000 dollars, and I am wondering if iBuyPower is a good place to find one. Otherwise, are there any other suggestions? I am willing to pay up to 1100 dollars, and I of couse will go for less. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Going for gaming I see. Amazon is a very good place to shop for almost anything online, and they have some good gaming laptops, the ones I like myself would be the Asus brand. They perform so well and I've never had one problem with this brand. It's just plain out nice and all my games run excellent on it.
I went and found an Asus Gaming Laptop at Amazon for you, It's just above $1000 but you should check it out. Check out the specs, it's definitely worth the money.

Here's a link to it:
