Thinking bout a new laptop(gaming) for under $2000.?

timbo5000x

I've looked at gateway's P-6860fx. Wat others are out there

Answer
I have the 6860-fx and i highly recommend it. Its been a great game system for me and i havent found a game that i cant run.

If your willing to spend 2K then you can truely turn it into a great gaming rig. Add a t9300 or better CPU (x9000 is amazing but expensive) and your actually pretty well set. Everything else you can do to the computer is just nit picky.

Like adding a 1900x1200 lcd 1080 hd screen or addint a second hard drive (yes the 320 gig HDD is a single drive and you have an extra open slot in the 6860... just perfect for another 320 gig if you want)

I just cant say enough about this rig. For the money its a great system. There are better, but you pay the premium for them and at 1300ish its the most capability for the least money out there currently

What would be the best gaming laptop under $2000?

Boricua

My parents have offered to buy me a gaming laptop for my birthday this year, mainly because I have yet to get a job & because I only have one year left of High School to go, but they don't want to spend too much money on one. I have asked them to get me the Alienware m15x but I don't know if that is a good one. Any suggestions?

Answer
Stay away from dell and alienware (partners now). Those laptops are way over priced so dont get suckered like many into there schemes.

What seperates dell/alienware from the competition is really and honestly, glitz, glamour and a strong marketing team.

Look up the samsung r780 it literally destroys the mx11. Asus another worthy competitor uses a killer 260gtx card on many of their laptops, hell even there older refurbished models outshine the competition.

Gateway has by far the best; huge looking gaming screens

There are far better deals out there you just have to be patient, some companies sacrifice a lot in there laptops to bring you affordable machines but those sacrifices they make can always be upgraded later on.

There are only a handful of games that take advantage of quad cores, i5 and i7... dual core series is just a good if you have a killer graphics card to support it.

Dont listen to these "so called experts" the operating system, ram, storage can always be upgraded easily. Just stay away from "gimped machines." In other words ive seen i7 processor on machines with intergrated graphics cards which are extremely inferior in performance. What a waste...

Look for a dedicated graphics card and your on the right path... here are some links happy hunting:

http://www.nextag.com/Notebooks--a-Graphic+Card-_-GeForce+GTX+260--zz300359zB4z5---html
Tomshardware.com (if not the best forum around)
notebookcheck.com (good place to check a laptops graphics card and notebook benchmarks)
tigerdirect.com (they have some killer new and refurbished asus that you can upgrade)
bestbuy.com (they have a killer r780 samsung)

Laptop upgrade for gaming?

Q. I have a apire 5742z-4097 ( pentium P6100). i want to upgrade for gaming ( MW3, tomb raider) in no less than Rs50,000 ($500). I live in pakistan.

Answer
Hi bro, to this moment i have not opened my laptop to make upgrages [my laptop model is acer aspire 5742G].Well, for 500$ you can make it very good.First search about buying some more RAM.
For example, if i am not in mistake, you need DDR3-SDRAM [ 2 x 4 GB ].For the processor, you do not need lot of cpu power. For games you need good graphics, so look for updates, i couldn't see anything for some new GPU for you.Clean up your hardware [ EVERYTHING ], then delete everything that you do not need. This i can tell to you. ;)

Answer
Market is now a days full of laptops and many of them are good options as well. These options include different brands and prices. But Asus has one option which is perfect according to your requirements. It has a price in between your budget. Also it has screen size of 15.6''. And also it is very good in performing all the tasks.

It also has really good features which include Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz and 6 GB DDR3 for fast processing of data whether it would be videos or games. It has good storage with 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 24 GB Solid-State Drive. A 15.6-Inch Screen with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 and Windows 8.

All of these features comes in under $650 which means you can save some amount as well. Also on the other hand it has most of the positive reviews from actual users. As one of them describes it as "Definitely work the money. Impressive Laptop". Here is a complete review which you can see and will helpful for you in deciding:

i have 1100 dollars i want a laptop that is powerful portability is not really a issue but something portable would be nice power is more in my mind i want something that can run battlefield 4, assassins creed 4, cod ghosts, and maybe crysis 3 at ultra settings above 30fps 1100 dollars is not much but it might be enough thanks
i am open to buying used laptops and buying them on ebay craigslist amazon i won't be buying a desktop because i don't have any space to put it in

Answer
Well, There are gaming laptops that will run BF4 in excess of 30 FPS without hickups, 1100 is a good price range.

Lets look at the GTX 780
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-780M.88993.0.html
40 on ultra
then there is the 770 GTX
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-770M.88995.0.html
27 ish on ultra
Here is one on eBay at Just your price mark
http://www.ebay.com/itm/R-MSI-GT60-2OC-022US-15-6-1TB-Intel-Core-i7-2-40-GHz-8-GB-GTX770-3Gb-/271396169594?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item3f3078e77a
A new laptop with 8970 GPU
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-8970M.90656.0.html

38 FPS on ultra settings.

And then there is the latest release as in so new, testing websites have no real benchmarks to post yet, the ATI 290X which is 50% faster then the 780GTX, so expect 60FPS on ultra settings.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-GX60-Destroyer-280-15-6-AMD-A10-5750-8GB-DDR3-AMD-R9-M290X-Gaming-Laptop-/161218529819?pt=Laptops_Nov05&hash=item25895f8a1b
Here is one, but its 1220$, 120 over your price range, but it destroys all the competition in the gaming laptops genre, will give you 60 FPS on ultra settings and I think you get like free coupons for some new games with it.
The 17 inch model is Another 100$ more.

So yes, you can do it, but you just need to raise your budget about 100 bucks to get the best of the best.

Is this a good gaming laptop for $1,000 budget?

Alex Dudes

First thing's first: don't persuade me to get a gaming PC instead; I'm well aware of the advantages, but I have my reasons for choosing a gaming laptop.

I only have a bidget of $1,000. I've been told by a few people that Asus are good if you're after a decent gaming laptop. Is this good for my budget? Will it suffice for most games? It's for my little brother. I know it's not top-of-the-line, but for the price, is there better?

Thanks.

Answer
I personally recomend ASUS for a gaming pc. it is $200 over your budget. Lenovo makes a gaming pc in your price range and it isnt all that bad. HP does not make any gaming pc's.

Should i get a gaming laptop or desktop?

Josh

My budget is $1500, I know that desktops are always better for the same price. I might get a regular (not gaming)laptop from my cousin for fixing the three of theirs that broke. I don't know how good my cousins laptops are but they would probably give me their worst one. I want to take a laptop with me for a marching band trip in November this year. I know I will get both a gaming laptop and desktop eventually, I am just not sure what first to get! Thnx for your replies!
thnx david I think I just answered a question you answered as well lol, yeah I have a Samsung tablet but at the moment it is out of commission, as I need a new charging cable for it

Answer
I personally [prefer laptops, but that is just my opinion.
Desktops are usually more powerful for the price. A common misconception about Desktops is that they are more "upgradeable" then laptops. Although this is true it is not by much. Everyting you need to replace in a dekstop you can replace in a laptop. You can upgrade RAM, change a hard drive, install a new graphics card, get a blu-ray player, and you get the point. The main difference between laptops and desktops are that do you want power or mobility. My cousin Paid about 75 dollars less for a Desktop about the same teir as my laptop. He has a 8 core AMD running as lower speeds and I have a Quad-Core Haswell i7 running at a bit higher speeds. I have more Disk Space totaling in at 1.75 TB (I have one TB drive and a 750 Hybrid) We both have the same RAM, and my Graphics Card is Better (His is a AMD Sapphire and I have a NIVIDIA GeForce). So Desktops are usually cheaper. but your sacrificing mobility and a built in screen.

Laptop shuts down when playing video games?

Ghostofmet

I have a Dell Inspiron and it keeps shutting down when I play on Steam. I've had this laptop since the end of May 2013 and I've had no problems with Steam before but as of November it started to shut down when I'm playing games on Steam ( mainly Saints Row ) I've did a scan on it and i have no viruses and everything is updated, what can I do?

I have windows 8 and 4.00 GB of RAM.
I'm 15 and I bought the Dell with my own money, it was the only thing I could afford, if I had enough money I would of bought a better laptop.....or just built my own PC.

Answer
you can test your laptops capability to run any game you want to test at http://systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

but please don't try to force your laptop to play something that it will struggle to play

otherwise all that money you've invested will just disappear

Yes I know you did what you could with the money you had and you want to play games... I understand that but listen to an old wise man.. don't destroy what you've got - go tap on your friends shoulder and ask to use his desktop gaming rig

Which laptops are good for gaming?

Reatanks

I am buying a new laptop around November and I am wondering what good gaming laptops to buy. I also want it to have class 1 video cards ( go to notebookcheck.net). The laptop should have Windows 7, 6-8g of mem, around 500gb of storage, 14-16 inch, and ya.
It can be 17in maybe im not sure yet.

And i kind of dont want an alienware. I was going to buy some people had some issues so im afraid i might have some issues to. If u believe other wise, feel free to post

Does anyone know which laptop is best suited for gaming? I mean games like Empire: Total War etc......?

hitmontop

Answer
Laptops are really "iffy" when it comes to gaming. Even though Empire is not an incredibly demanding game graphically you will still need a "high end" notebook that is specifically for gaming if you want it work right for whatever game you decide to play on it. Try the link below.

Best laptop under $500?

tyroller_2

I'm looking to buy a laptop but I want to keep the price below 500 and want something that won't be a bust. I'm leaning toward the Compaq QL-60 Presario but I want to be sure I'll get something good.

The most important thing for me is the video card for gaming.

Answer
If you only want to spend under 500, then you need to look for a laptop with something similar to an Nvidia 8000GS series.

Just to let you know, laptops that have good gaming graphics don't come under $500.

Good cheap gaming laptop?

connor

I want a gaming laptop that can play things like Dragon age origins, skyrim, world of Warcraft, without lag. What would be a good laptop for those games for under 800$?

Answer
Gaming needs really good speed so you can play games without any delay. The laptop which I think has good processing speed and comes under your budget is Acer Aspire V3-571G-9686. It has a good combination of superior features and also affordable price.

It has Screen Size of1 5.6 inches which is really ideal size to have. The most important is its Processor2.2 GHz Core i7-3615QM which is really fast and efficient and will be helpful in playing games. It RAM6 GB SDRAM and Hard Drive 500 GB SATA. It has Graphics Coprocessor NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M which will give you superior graphics and It has Average Battery Life of 4.5 hours. So overall it is really good laptop.

Look at it for further details:

I would like you to see this comment from an actual user as well because the better would be explain by the actual user that how it really performs:

I want to get a decent gaming laptop that can paly bf3, minecraft, arma 2, dayz...etc... But i only want to spend around $500 any sjggestions?

Answer
Gaming systems do not need the latest bleeding edge technology to give hours of fun and satisfaction. There will be people who are going to claim that you need the highest resolution screen (1920 x 1080) and the fastest CPU and GPU with obscene amounts of ram. They think that by picking all the latest bleeding edge parts and slapping them together makes it all work. Choose what works for you in your budget. A 1366 x 768 screen with a middle of the road CPU, GPU will work just fine. You're not going to be playing the bleeding edge games with bleeding edge technology in the highest settings, but you will be having fun.

This HP can be customized to what you need, Bump the APU and ram for better performance.

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

What would make a better gaming laptop?

Im in the market for a new laptop this christmas, and id like it to be a gaming laptop that also is used for school etc. I currently have a vaio, and i really like the brand so im leaning toward another vaio but with way better specs. The two im looking for is one that has 15.5 inch screen (1366x768), 8 GB of RAM, i7 2.10 GHz CPU, AMD Radeon HD 7550M 2GB GPU, and 500 GB 5400 rpm hard drive for $885, and the other that has a 15.5 inch screen (1920x1080), 8 GB of RAM, i7 2.1 GHz CPU, Nvidia GeForce GT 640M LE 2GB GPU, and 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive for $1050. Which is the better deal, or should i even get a vaio in the first place? it would be my main gaming computer. Thank you for all answers
it cant be a desktop because I live in a dorm, and i also need it to be portable to be able to take it anywhere if i need to

15 inch vs. 17 inch laptop for gaming?

SeanBrad

I am looking into getting a laptop for playing games and I'm not sure if i should get a 15 inch or a 17 inch. The computer will mostly stay in my room and occasionally move into my basement, and I might bring it to a friend's house once or twice a month.
The 17 inch and the 15 inch have the same specs, and by going through different websites I have found a $30 difference.

Answer
its ofcourse 17" ...because it'll have more resolutions which means better gaming...

Best gaming laptop under 500 pound?

George

Im looking for a laptop that will run these games :
-BF3, dont mind low settings but if possible higher
-Minecraft, max settings (or less but would hope it could run max)
-all others i can think of are less demanding.
i hope for decent framerates, 60 if possible, but will settle for lower (nothing lower than 40 please, i know 30 is fine but i dont find that very playable)
i think 500 pound is a good enough price as my 800 pound desktop runs bf3 ultra at 60 fps and minecraft max at never lower than 150.
i was looking at a Acer Aspire V3-571G-6622

Good gaming Laptop will cost about 2000 $

What is a decent "gaming" laptop preferably under $600?

I have a beastly gaming desktop that can manage all but the newest and most taxing games but the problem is i need something portable to take to work. I work graveyard security and well i want something to help kill the time im not doing various duties.

i'm not looking for anything too flashy as i know already i wont find it for my meager price. im just looking for something that could run Guild Wars and if im lucky maybe even a total war game on low settings smoothly(good time killing games). ive never needed nor really wanted a laptop until recent and now im so far behind in my pc IQ (especially with laptops) that i'll admit i could use the added help.

any suggestions would be very welcome.

Well for a good gaming laptop you should have at least $700 or above. At that price you can get a good laptop for casual gaming...

Macbook Pro 15 inch 2010 or 2012 or Alienware m17x?

megannguye

I am in a situation where I want a good laptop based on the style. For example, I like Macbook because of all the multitasking and gadget stuff. But you can barely play any games. I like Alienware because of the keyboard and lights. But it is very heavy. I don't know which is worth it. (I know both aren't worth it though)

So if you have a better idea then tell me.

What I look in a laptop:
$1500 and under
Backlight Keys
Not heavy (light)
15 and up inch screen
at least 1080p
Good graphics card to run high end graphic games

Optional: good sound system (subwoofer built in)

Answer
The M17x has suprerior GPU, CPU, system memory, storage, and screen quality; however, the mac has decent security, aesthetics value, weight, and battery life. To be honest, you really do not need to compromise, as they have few laptop manufactures that have beautifully power computers:

I was looking at the lenovo gaming series: http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/ideapad/y-series/

And at the customizable "monster" gaming net book: http://web.eurocom.com/EC/ec_model_config1(1,228,0)

In the end, it is up to you on what you want.

What gaming laptop would you suggest me buying?

hjtjl

Please explain the specs and why would I buy it

Answer
Lenovo y570

Reason: Best value for the performance.

$700 (ebay buy it now from lenovo warehouse)

1 year warranty intact
lenovo is known for quality parts

intel 2.3 ghz i5 processor (boosts automatically to 2.9)
nvidia gt 555m (strong graphics proccesor)
750gb hard drive
4gb ram (upgradeable to 16)
blu-ray drive
ssd capable (with windows on the ssd boot time can be as low as 20 seconds)

overall, this laptop can run any game out right now, most games from 2011/2010 run at medium, anything older runs at high or better. for $700 you can't beat the power.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. Gaming Laptop Vs. Gaming Desktop -- Pros/Cons?

Twistedbla

Background: So I'm considering getting a $1,500 gaming laptop come this June. I'll be using it for college coming up so I really needed a laptop as well as an upgrade for my current rig.

Pt. 1: What I'm wondering is what am I suffering in buying a gaming laptop rather than a gaming desktop. List pros and cons.

Pt. 2: Being a hardcore gamer (40+ hrs/week) can a laptop handle my lengthy gaming periods?

Answer
Gaming Desktop:

Pros: Cheaper than a similar performing laptop, upgradeable, newer parts/technology always come out for the desktop first

Cons: Not portable.

Gaming Laptop:

Pros: Portable, can offer same performance as a desktop if you have money.

Cons: More expensive than a similar performing desktop, not upgradeable (except for the hard drive), newer parts/technology come out later than a desktop.

A laptop will never on a battery, handle your gaming periods. If you plug it into the wall socket using the provided charger/AC adapter, you'll be fine, of course.

Unless you plan on gaming on the go, I recommend that you just get a mid-level laptop ($500-$700 US) for college and use the rest of your cash to upgrade your current rig or build a new one.

Good laptops with backlit keyboards?

Bill

I'm on my way to college and was looking around at some laptops with backlit keyboards but all of them are $1,000 or more. Can someone give me some laptops with backlit keyboards for below $500.

Answer
Unfortunately, most backlit keyboards are for gaming systems, or systems that are not as good a value. The only decent value priced laptops I know of are the Toshiba P750 series, and it has to be confirmed. The link breaks by Y/A
Paste these 3 together:
www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/
laptops.to?
family=Satellite#4294967002 25 216 260 4294948566 4294948573
or look for Extras LED Backlit Keyboard at the Toshiba Web site
$40 option on the customized ones. You are not below $500, but are still starting below $600
Not sure whether they sell cheaper at Newegg as I found for HP laptops in general.
I also believe Toshiba is like Dell about discount codes. You intensively search the web and their web site to see if there are any. Lenovo shows you the codes - they are just a formality.
And, I think Bassman1 works for Toshiba, and did not point you at the P750 series.
$600 at Office Depot:
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/289687/Toshiba-Satellite-P755-S5184-Laptop-Computer/
i5-2450M, 640GB HDD 4GB RAM, only 10/100 ethernet, USB 3.0, Intel Graphics, Backlit keyboard
Problem is, you can get a lot better. If you can get 10% off with email sign-up, Lenovo Y570 base model is $630. It has GT 555M graphics, the higher speed 500GB 7200 HDD, Blutooth, 2mp cam, gigabit ethernet, but no backlit keyboard.

blue backlit for 25 dollar upgrade

turbo boost to 3.3 GHZ

BluRay drive, not sure if its a burner though

15-6 inch screen

thats going to be around 775 w/o tax... i suggest getting the upgrade to the better graphics card (650m 2gb) (125$) bluetooth (15$), and the 1080p screen (150$). also the 750 gig 7200 rpm hard drive (10$) would be a very good choice. now the price would be around.... 1250 with tax. but you have to use the coupon code white100 to get the extra 100 dollars off. can run any game on ultra 30 plus FPS.

EDIT nope, the price would be 1167.71 with NY tax already added on. this computer did come out in 2012 also.... i think you knew the computer i explained was already on your mind lol...

I am looking to play games mainly minecraft GTA IV and maybe some skyrim will this laptop lend well to playing these games on low to high settings? Also if anyone has a laptop in my budget that is similar or better feel free to list it and ill check it out :)

Answer
First, basic quality by brand and sub-brand
At Lenovo, their "everyday" is Essentials. At HP, they have Compaq and Pavilion both covering the cheap stuff, and at Dell is Inspiron, and Toshiba has Satellite and Acer has Gateway, but even Acer brand is cheap stuff also.
Latest average quality report

and here is a 3Q 2012 (see "source" - moved links for Y/A)
but that is all computers, so also

HP Pavilion deserves no price premium based on this data.

That allows basic evaluation.
AMD A10-4600M APU Passmark score: 3146
Rank #167 by Notebookcheck.
Gaming rank #192 for HD 7660G

Curry's including the £100 cashback sale on laptops of £499 and higher, plus a normal good online shop of value being Saveonlaptops are usually best to look at now.

To beat the HP, need either a better price on an A10 laptop, or one with a true discrete graphics card better than the HD 7660G.

Much faster CPU than the HP. Much better graphics performance than the HP. More total DRAM via the 2GB dedidated as extra. same size HDD. Equal or better in sub-brand reliability. Clearly worth the extra £70 and slightly higher weight about that of the graphics card you get.
Passmark score: 4012 27% higher performance
Rank #76 by Notebookcheck - a huge gaming advantage cpu.
Gaming rank #132 for GT 635M, - unquestionably superior gaming.

Acer £470 or a little cheaper with less DRAM is also OK.
Intel® Core⢠i3-2377M Dual Core Processor, 15.6" HD Screen, Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit, 10GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB HDD + 20GB SSD, DVD Rewriter, Dedicated GT 640M Graphics, 2.2 Kg
Brand quality slightly lower than the HP and notably lower than the Ideapad.
CPU performance much lower in performance. Smaller but faster by SSD Acceleration HDD, overflowing abundance of RAM (or cut cost to a usually sufficient 4+2GB), and the golden charm is the GT 640M and 2.2kg weight moved up to rank #105 in gaming if your games are sufficient with the i3.

Medium-high on Skyrim held to about 25 to 30 fps by the CPU at the settings as expected.

The Lenovo has the far better CPU, but the gaming settings may be very slightly lower by GT 635M vs GT 640M. Including more games of higher CPU requirements, and considering the overall specifications, I would get the Lenovo and sacrifice a couple of frames per second in Skyrim (and GTA4 and Minecraft) for a faster overall performance and bigger HDD and higher quality of the Lenovo, but they are both better than the HP. Make note of a Toshiba L870 that is a 17.3" also better than the HP if interested in it.
44 laptops at Curry's UK in price range to consider.
Seeing the same HP at the same price since PCWORLD and Curry's are affiliated. We are dissappointed that the high quality Samsung's and Asus below 500 quid are HD 4000, as are the Touchscreen Lenovo's and highly discounted ultrabooks, because we need a good graphics card.
We note an HP Envy m6-1232ea at 550 minus 100 cashback with the good i5 CPU and HD 7670M graphics card better than the A10 Pavilion, but not good enough to beat the Lenovo in projected quality or performance, nor the Acer in performance.
Gaming: Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba, HP Envy, HP Pavilion in that order.
Quality: Lenovo, HP Envy, Toshiba, HP Pavilion, Acer in that order.

is this laptop any good for gaming?

is this laptop any good for gaming?
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=501489390

Answer
Oh yea. That laptop meets every games standard that is on the market right now. The price is way crazy though. You could get a system with much better hardware for cheaper if you built your own desktop. You can easily look up tutorials on how to build a desktop, than simply go to wholesale websites like geeks.com newegg.com frys.com or ebay for computer parts. Trust me. Laptops overheat like crazy, so no matter how nice it is. It will not last as long as the average desktop and may under-perform due to crap air flow. Other than that its actually quite nice.

Laptop Query - University + Gamings?

carryonrav

Hey guys, I'm looking at buying this laptop [external link] for university next year [and a bit of gaming on the side]

http://www.justlaptops.net.nz/product/180/sony-cs-p8600-4g-320g-gef9-wifi-n-14-led-win7-pack/?search=SONY+CS+P8600

I was wondering if that would run Aion [and other games of that calibre] smoothly. Any response would be greatly appreciated. :D

For those not wanting to click on the link, here are the stats for the laptop:

* Intel Centrino 2, Core 2 Duo P8600 @ 2x 2.4GHz
* 4GB Duo Channel DDR2 800MHz RAM
* 320 GB High speed SATA 5400 rpm
* nVidia GeForce9300GS with 1.5G Video RAM / 256MB Dedicated
Cheers for the heads-up Allen, I'm looking for more or less a replacement for my desktop at home, as I will be moving out and that'll be my sole computer. That battery issue sounds like a bit of a problem though hmm

Answer
This isn't a answer, but rather advice. Gaming laptops run out of battery very quickly and it would suck if you needed to take notes or email an assignment but your battery was dead.

Look up the games you want to play and the recommended graphics card. Then find a laptop with a graphics card better than that.

Problems with my laptop?

Madison

I've had a Compaq Presario CQ56 since December of 2010. I haven't really had many problems with it until recently. About a month ago, I was trying to replace the memory because I simply wanted to upgrade it. This of course involved taking out the battery and removing a few more things to get to it. But it turned out the cards were the wrong ones, so I replaced the old ones and sent the new ones back. But ever since then, when my battery would get to about 20 or 30 percent charge, it would completely shut off. Usually my computer would just "pause" at 5% and go right back to where it was once I plugged it in and turned everything back on. But I've had to keep it plugged in 24/7 because it just turned off randomly. Its also been a little slower. And a few days ago, I was carrying it in its bag, and I accidently bumped into something and the battery fell out. I put it back in place, of course, but tonight (about six days later) the screen went completely blank. Just white. For no reason. I completely shut off my computer and it is now sitting on the table, the cord by its side. I'm thinking maybe it overheated, but that hasn't happened, and it wasn't making any strange sounds. And I scan my computer once a week with Malwarebytes, but there hasn't been any viruses or something on it. I'm getting really nervous about my computer because it will take months until I can get a new one, and considering practically my whole life is on the computer (games I play, all my friends, school projects, work, etc.) that would just be hell.
If you're laughing at my stupidity, I understand, and it's okay.

Answer
Worth a shot? Take the battery out and unplug it. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Put the battery back in and plug it in and start it up. I have seen this type of issue on a few Compaq models.

Which Three Should I Buy? Apple iPad, Apple iPhone 3GS, Nintendo DSi XL, PSP 3000, PSP GO, and Xbox 360 Elite?

Gamer959

I am a current PS3 Slim 120GB and a Nintendo Wii owner. I got the PS3 Slim in January, and the Nintendo Wii in December. I am looking for something new because the Nintendo Wii is starting to get very boring and the PS3 is amazing it's just that when i do not play the PS3, i want to play something else.

The Apple iPad is a very fun device and if i will buy one it will be the 16GB version which runs at $499.99. The problem with the iPad is that it is not everything that you need in a laptop, yes it is touch screen but it doesn't work like a Mac, it is not faster than a Mac, but it works like an HP Laptop which is pretty fast, but if i am going to use it for everyday use then it probably would not be the right thing for me, espcially because the iPhone 3GS is the leading device in the world and if i buy both the iPad and the iPhone 3GS i do not know if that would be stupid or not.

The Apple iPhone 3GS is a great device with many good applications, games and more. I will be buying te 16GB version of the iPhone which is $199.99. I really like it and i would want to pay $80 for a great device, but the problem is that my cousin got his iPhone and got bored with it for the next two years and started just paying money to the company which was not very fun for him. I like the iPhone's applications and games but it is just too expensive even though i can pay that much money in a month, it is just that i feel weird paying that much in a month.

The Nintendo DSi XL is a very fun device with many great games. It has a 93% larger screen than the Nintendo DS Lite and 86% larger than the Nintendo DSi. But here comes the problem, Nintendo said they are releasing the Nintendo 3DS which is supposed to replace the WHOLE Nintendo DS Series. Also, one thing that i would regret on the Nintendo DS Series, is that my friend go a Nintendo DSi the day it came out which was April 5th and played with it until April 23rd and then threw it in his closet and it is still sitting in his closet right now and he had not touched it since about one year ago. So, i am afraid that teh same thing would happen to me because i got a Nintendo DSi but returned it last year because i got bored of it but everything could have changed right now because it has AMAZING Games.

Now to the PSP 3000 and PSP GO, i like the PSP GO because everysingle UMD Game that i like is on PlayStation Network so i have nothing to worry about some games not being there. But it has a smaller screen, i do not like the PSP 3000 because of teh UMD and because it is HUGE!!! The PSP 3000 does have a bigger screen and it does look a bit more hot than the PSP GO but were not going to get into that. Now, i heard that Sony is coming out with a new PSP 2 that they are announcing at E3 2010, and i do not want to miss out on teh new system because that is supposed to compete with the Nintendo 3DS. So, should i wait until E3 2010, and if they do not announce anything then i will buy the PSP GO or should i just buy it now?

Now the Xbox 360. It has great exclusive like Halo, Gears of War, Left for Dead, Fable, etc. The Live is AMAZING especially with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. If i do buy one i will either buy the Final Fantasy 13 Bundle which is $399.99 or the Spring 2010 Bundle which includes two free games at teh price of $299.99. But, i already have a PS3 and a Nintendo Wii so the Xbox 360 Elite might just be a waste. It also has the Red Ring of Death which could happen anytime. Also, they might release a NEW XBOX between now and 2012. Also, pricing is not an issue but if Microsoft decreases the price every year for the Xbox 360 and then next year it is $199.99 wouldn't they have to come out with something new because the prices are too cheap. Like right now it is $299.99 so would they keep it at $299.99 for another two years or DO THEY HAVE TO DECREASE THE PRICE EVERY YEAR. Like i said pricing is not an issue i just said that they might release something new shich i am afraid of happening.

Anyway thank you everybody and please do not just say what you want me to get explain what you want me to get to get best answer. YOU WILL NOT GET BEST ANSWER IF YOU DO NOT EXPLAIN!!!! SO YOU HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST 6-8 SENTENCES BECAUSE PLEASE IF YOUR WERE IN MY PLACE THIS IS A HARD SITUTATION THAT NEEDS A LOT OF EXPLINATION. SO EVERYBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!!! Thank you everybody and i wish you all good luck with helping reach my decision!!!

Answer
iPhone 3GS
Because not only has this phone become so popular, but the applications that have been developed for it are truly amazing. There really is almost an application for everything. On the downside, they can be pricy and are rumored to be quite fragile, however I have dropped mine countless times and not broken it. The iPhone has great reception, it's easy to navigate, and so long as you're willing to pay the cost, you should have no problem.

xBox 360 Elite
I myself have an xBox 360 Elite, and it's possibly one of my favourite gaming consoles besides the PC. The range of games and the genres they come in are endless as well, plus the graphics are bright and perfect, and the gaming experience it gives is just plain awesome. These things aren't really that heavy either, plus you can usually pick one up at a secondhand store in good condition for about $320. If you're the kind of guy who wants to play online, play a lot of games, and wants something GOOD to play, this is the way to go.

PSP Go
The reason I tell you this as my third option is because I have a PsP Go and I use it constantly.
I'm 23, but still in lunch breaks, this is great to take my mind off stuff.
The graphics are magnificent for a machine of it's size, it has the best possible features available, there is again a wide variety of games, and they are easy to carry around. If you know your way around internet, these things can connect to your home wireless net, which is great for using facebook, MSN, myspace and so on.

So these are my 3 choices. And I can explain why not for the other three.

iPad
As you said, yes they aren't everything that you want in a laptop.
Sure, they look good and they're neat to carry around because of the slimness, but let's face it, can it do everything a normal Mac or even a Windows computer can do?
I can't tell if you're a gamer of not, so i can't exactly source what you're using things like these for, but I assume you are because of the gaming consoles you mention.
An iPad would be incapable of running games, nor would it have the power to run anything like runescape, and for 500 bucks, you could pick yourself up a good and probably better desktop computer which would be much more versatile. Even a laptop might be a hundred dollars more and you would get your moneys worth out of it.

PSP 3000
The reason I knocked this one was because the PSP Go is far better compared to this one.
If you're willing to spend the money on it, the PSP Go has the better graphics, and the better portability. PSP 3000's are cheap, and you can rarely find a store around with one brand new.

Nintendo DSi XL
The reason I chose not to answer this one is because I'm not a huge DS fan. The DS's graphics are still inferior to even the Nintendo Gamecube and that of a PC, however if you enjoy the cutsie games, then this would be the way to go.
However I think their prices are largely overrated for the output they give.

Hope this helps ya :)

Gaming Laptop??

Cpyke

Do you think an Asus G1Sn-A1 can handle video games such as COD4, CS:S, and soon to be Age of Conan. If I do buy this notebook, I'm upgrading it to 7200rpm for gaming purposes I hope. If not, what notebook/laptop do you guys suggest I get in that price range?? ($$1000-1600)

Answer
unless you are rich, a gaming laptop doesn't make sense. it would be cheaper to just build a gaming computer for every place you go, and youd get better performance.

Cheap Gaming Laptops?

ItsATurtle

I would like to get a laptop that can handle most games and run them smoothly, it doesn't have to be able to run them at the highest resolution but the highest would be preferable. I'm also gonna use a lot of photoshop and video editing software. My budget is around $800-$1500.

Brand buying advise

Always avoid refurbished units. They only come with a 90 day warranty and have a higher failure rate. The service contacts are normally just a one time replace contract.

Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name than product.

Chrome books are useless. They are designed by Google to make you dependent on Google. If you can not access the web then you can not do anything.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.
