Please help, Going to hong kong?

Vinay N

Im going to Hong Kong for the 1st time in a couple weeks for 13 nights(Causeway Bay), can some1 suggest a list of must see places, places to buy a decent laptop(that will work in the UK), DVDs, and where I can find a list of commonly used phrases in H.K.
If I buy an X-box/or PS3, will it and the games(bought there and UK), work in the UK? What about movies (Region problems?) Will I be able to get it 'chipped' so it will work and where can this be done?
Will I be able to get a (Tourist)/VISA in HK to enter China?
Any recommended Health Spa places?
Any recommended romantic restaurants/places to go?
Also, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS :)

Answer
I used to live there, so I think I can help somewhat.

Must see places.. well there's the peak tram, the harbor, the budhist temples, the ferry, etc.

Places to buy electronic goods. I suggest you go to "mong kok", there is a famous computer shopping center there which is a good place to buy stuff like that. Don't go into electronic shops around the tourist areas, because they will undoubtedly rip you off.

I've included a link to some phrase material in my sources.

The console that you buy in Hong Kong will probably not be a PAL version, but either the Japanese NTSC or American NTSC versions, and may or may not be able to play UK games (it depends on the ability of the chip), but shouldn't have a problem playing on a multi-system tv if you have one, and hong kong uses the same voltage as UK so they will provide the current converters). My PS2 however is a chipped Australian model that I bought in HK, and can play all games and movies regardless of region. You will have to find a seller who can speak decent English in order to specify what you need.
I'm not sure about PS3, but it usually takes pirates a short while to come out with a mod chip for new consoles and the PS3 hasn't been out that long. I think there is one for the X-box 360 though. Depending on where you go to buy your console, it may or may not be pre-chipped. Since piracy is essentially illegal, you'll have to search for the right shopping centers. The most famous one is called "The Golden Center" which is located in "Sham Shui Po" and is easy to find, since it's close to the MTR (the underground train station), but there is also one in "Ya Mei Tei" and also in "Tsuen Wan".

As for the VISA, I'm not sure, but your traveling restrictions to mainland china shouldn't be particularly different to that of Hong Kong.

Health spas, well there are plenty around the kowloon area. It's difficult to recommend any since, I've never used them. There is a country and yacht club called the 'gold coast' which is located in the New Territories which I used to go to, which has some great spa facilities, its a really scenic place too.

As for romantic locations, the first thing that comes to mind is the Kowloon harbor. But there are lots of places to go. As for restaurants, there are nice ones around the Kowloon area and Kowloon is the best for tourists as you will be able to communicate better there since they have a better grasp of English. I would suggest Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan and Central.

It's also worth noting that there's only really one place where all the bars and nightclubs are located. It's called "Lan Kwai Fong" located in Central. The bar/nightclub industry is taxed quite highly in hong kong, so you may find that drinking out may hurt the wallet a little.

But have fun.

Where is the best place to buy cheap eletronic gadgets in Hong Kong?

I want to buy a few christmas gadgets such as ipods, digital cameras, video games and a laptop. Where is the best place to buy them in Hong Kong?
should I just go shopping to ShenZhen instead? i hear things are way cheaper on that side of china.

Answer
If you do go, there is a huge mall with cheap stuff just across the HK border of Lo Wu. If you stay in HK for your shopping, maybe try a certain IT mall near the MTR station of Sham Shui Po. Just go there, you cant miss it.

Ok. I gotta agree with the guy above that things are cheaper, but they arent THAT much cheaper. But I would add that if they ARE amazingly cheaper, you might want to think twice before you buy them. A little suspicious... ESPECIALLY in Shenahen. Though SZ is a bit cheaper than HK.

Another warning: My friend bought a PS2 in HK (back when they first came out), and a few games to go with it (games and movies are the one thing that is VERY inexpensive), but when he got back to the US, none of the North American games he bought would work on his console! Kind of like the region codes they sometimes put on DVDs. I dont know if the situation is still the same now. Something about PAL and NTSC Im told.
