What's a good, cheap gaming laptop?

Jon

I'm looking for a nice, relatively recent gaming laptop, that's easily affordable. I'm not looking for miracles, just something that could consistently run Minecraft on medium graphics. Any ideas?

Answer
Not sure what you are considering cheap....but this is about the best price you will get for a very good (not elite) gaming laptop.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y560p Laptop (43972FU), Intel® Core⢠i7-2630QM Processor (2.00GHz), 15.6" HD Glare Display, 8GB Ram, 750GB, AMD Radeon HD 6570M 1GB, DVD Recordable (Dual Layer), Webcam, 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, 6-cell battery, Windows 7 Home Premium » for $829 at Lenovo

Whether you're gaming, enjoying your favorite movie on the Blu-ray Disc player or creating your own multimedia files, the Y560p puts some serious oomph behind your activity. Features such as Split Screen and Lenovo DirectShare allow you to optimize your viewing and sharing of multimedia, while second-generation Intel Core processors, 8GB DDR and up to AMD Radeon HD 6570M graphics combine for a high-powered entertainment experience that's fast, fluid and fun.

This is what I'm looking at

How is the video card of this laPtop?

Do you think it can handle most recent games?

Also recommend me if you have some other laplaop recommendations

And don't tell me to get an Alienware and I just sold my 2011 late 17" MacBook pro

Answer
That laptop will allow you to play most modern games at pretty high settings. The i7-2670QM is pretty much the best processor you can get without getting a 3rd Gen i7 Ivy Bridge processor. 8GB of RAM is great, although it is the minimum I would go for in a gaming laptop. As for the graphics card, I'm not sure. I use Nvidia exclusively, so one of their GeForce GTX cards would be much better. But a higher end AMD card will do just fine.

While that laptop is a great deal for the most part, you have to remember that it is an HP. Some of their high-end laptops are really good, but the majority of what they make will break on you within a year or two. If you plan on using this laptop intensively for the next four or five years, I would recommend going with an ASUS or Toshiba. ASUS laptops in particular are very durable, and they are often less expensive than other brands.

That being said, I did own a high-end HP Pavilion laptop very similar to this one for almost six years before it finally gave out on me. So I know that not all HP computers are bad. You've found a great laptop, but don't rule out ASUS, Toshiba or even MSI. And if you are going for lighter gaming, consider an ultrabook like the ASUS Zenbook or Toshiba Portege.

But whatever you do, stay very far away from Dell. Their consumer line is gone now that they are only making business computers, and even when they had a consumer line it was horrible and overpriced. Alienware makes great computers, but they are extremely overpriced, and you can find similar laptops from other manufacturers.
