If your buying a gaming laptop i wouldn't set my sights on wow gaming since its graphics are not very good compared to other standards of gaming and most new age laptops will be able to handle the graphics fairly easily

I am an avid gamer and my current laptop cannot even run Minecraft. I would like a new laptop that can run games well and is not insanely expensive. I'm looking for a gaming laptop that's around $1200 or less, preferably something in the Sager or Alienware line but anything that's good is fine, and maybe something that wont be boiling hot after a couple hours of gameplay would be good :).

Aliewnare laptops are the best gaming laptops. You can take that from me because I did many reviews on the Alienware line of gaming laptops. Any model from Alienware would do but I believe $1200 is not enough since Alienware laptops are so expensive. But if you could spare extra cash, that shouldn't be a problem.

Another good gaming laptop brand would be from Dell. The Dell XPS series are ideal gaming laptops and your $1200 price tag covers a variety of different models.

Toshiba is another good brand which serves for both business and gaming. I prefer the Toshiba Qosmio which is a monster for its wicked sound system and unbelievable performance. But it is a little expensive. The Toshiba Portege should cover your cost.

Brand buying advice

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

I have had this ASUS G73SW-3DE computer for about a week. I am verrrrrryyyyy happy with it. The build, quality, construction is the best I have seen in a laptop. The keyboard works great and the keys are spaced nicely for typing. All that student stuff aside, this thing rocks! The games are all set at ultra settings and the 3D looks amazing. When the glasses are on the screen is bright so you don't have any issues at all with the darker lenses of the Nvidia 3D glasses.Also all you World of Warcraft players out there, you wont believe how things change when you play in 3D. It blew me away to see all the flat graphics in WOW come to life in 3D.

First, you need to make sure you REALLY have a budget of $1500. Most people start off saying that they want to buy a laptop or computer, and they have a budget of $xxxx.xx, but then after a short conversation on the subject, they start whittling away at it... saying things like "well, I want to also buy this xxxxx with that money, and I would *like* to only spend $1000.00 if I can get away with it" etc. This means that their budget is not as large as they initially said.

However, if your budget is really $1500, consider getting a Sager. Why? I'll tell you.

Ok. I'm sure it all looks nice enough, but why the $1449 price tag? You can upgrade it. Sager notebooks are built on the Clevo notebook design, in that they are built to be upgraded. The video cards are all MXM standard, so they can be swapped out and replaced. That in and of itself is very important with a gaming laptop. But here's the deal.
What you can upgrade to in the future...
-Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M GPU with 4GB GDDR5 (or better... since when new MXM cards come out, you can use one of those)
-Intel® Core⢠i7-4930MX Processor Extreme Edition ( 8MB L3 Cache, 3.0GHz ) (again, you are just limited by the processor socket)
-32GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 4 X 8GB (that's a lot of Ram...).

.. and of course, you can drop a blu-ray drive in there, a second hard drive, or even use two SSD drives, etc. The point is, that rather than looking at replacing the laptop in a couple of years because you need better video, or a better processor... you can buy into the base line NP series Sager, and then just upgrade it like a desktop. So, for your budget, buy into Sager.

Not much cheaper at all. However, there is no sales tax in China.


People who talk about quality of computer has NO knowledge about computer whatsoever.

Dell, HP, etc. do NOT produce computers. They buy CPUs, RAM sticks, hard drives, motherboards, video cards, sound cards, tower cases, power supplies, then put them together in under 20 min. each and resell at a rip off prices. It's like you buy the hotdog, and buns, and catchup, then put them together. It doesn't matter if it's your mom or your dad put them together. The quality is the same!

It's the same companies who make these computer parts.
The only two major CPU makers are Intel and AMD.
The only two major video cards makers are Nvidia and ATI.(ATI was bought by AMD. Intel also make some onboard video but nothing high end)
Hard drive companies - Western Digital, etc.
Sound card companies - Creative Labs, etc.
Motherboard companies - Asus, Abit, etc.
etc. etc.

Whether the computer is sold in the U.S. or in China, they all contain the SAME parts from the SAME companies listed above! That's the reason why the prices aren't much different in China or in the U.S.

I don't buy completed computers. I buy parts and put them together which is EXACTLY what Dell etc. does! (they buy parts from above companies, and put them together. Like I said before, it takes only 20 min with 2 hands and a screw driver) Only difference is that I put BETTER(I don't pair up fast CPU with slow memory and onboard video to create bottlenecks like Dell does) parts in there according to my needs. In the end, with the same amount of money, I build BETTER computers than Dell can offer. OR, With the same hardware parts, I save lots of money than buying from Dell.

By the way, I've been building computers for the last eight years. ALL video cards and motherboards I bought in the U.S. have labels of "Made in China". It only means China did the production. The technology and specifications are still belong to the above companies. By the way, it also means the LARGE MAJOR portion of the profit also goes to these companies instead of Chinese manufacturers in case you think China "stole" the money.
P.S. The founders of Nvidia and ATI were both Chinese. Memory chips were also invented by Chinese. All motherboard companies are in fact Taiwanese companies, whose population are 98% Chinese, and their productions are always in mainland China. Intel chips usually are being produced in Malaysia. I also had AMD chip bought in the U.S. as "made in China".

I already have a gaming desktop I built, so I already have games. I don't need it for schoolwork because I rarely use a computer for schoolwork. So I need some valid reasons on why I should or shouldn't buy a gaming laptop.

Gaming laptops are faster than regular laptops and have MUCH better quality sound. Biggest difference is the sound and you'll be a getting a better fps so you can play higher definition. But the speed can also be had on regular laptops. So once again, biggest reason to get a gaming laptop is SOUND.

Look out for the ATI HD3200. It's a great integrated solution.

Laptops are not for gaming. They will overheat and wear out. They have insufficient cooling and the parts are not built for sustaining heavy 3D applications for hours on end.

Go desktop. Large box, lot of cooling, quality parts. Then there is less regret when the laptop parts burn or keeps fuming carbon monoxide on your desk.

Laptops are usually 50% cheaper than real parts. But so is what you get.
