Gaming laptop?

I am looking for a new laptop for school papers and such and to take notes when i transfer out to a university. I also want my laptop to be good for games and such. My price range is around $900-$1500. What are some suggestions? I've been looking at the Asus F35v B3 what laptops compare to that one and which is better?

Hi!
I'm looking for advice on buying a reasonably priced gaming laptop. I'm hoping to find something less than â¬1000 (or there abouts) but that can still play modern games fairly decently. I've looked on most sites but become bogged down in the amount of laptops and model numbers. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

How bad of an investment is a gaming laptop compared to a gaming desktop?

In other words, can an $800 desktop outperform a $2000 laptop or is a $2000 laptop = $2000 desktop? If the previous is true, why don't I just by a cheap notebook and settle for a gaming desktop right?

Anyway, how BAD IS IT REALLY?

It's quite bad.... A $2000 laptop is about equal to a $1000 desktop, and a $900 laptop is about equal to a $500 desktop. You're losing more value because laptops aren't upgradeable other than RAM.... You can't install a newer, faster graphics card or CPU a year from now whereas on desktops you can. You can't install a better soundcard.

But no matter how much you spend, laptops cannot approach the performance of high-end desktops. Laptop components are weaker than their desktop counterparts, because they're engineered to be physically smaller, consume less power (to extend battery life) and generate less heat- absolute requirements if they're going to fit and work inside a laptop chassis.

If you look at the physical dimensions even $150ish desktop cards like the GTX 460 and Radeon HD 6850, most of the space those cards occupy is heatsink/cooling apparatus. That amount of cooling is required to run GPUs at such high clock speeds. And those cards need a spacious case with good airflow to run without overheating. Then of course you've got the power requirements- there's physically no room inside a laptop chassis for a 500W Corsair power supply. And as you progress to $250 and $350 cards, the need for power and cooling only increases.

On laptops, simple physics greatly reduces the performance of anything you can fit inside. There's no laptop you can buy which remotely approaches a $2000 desktop running dual GPUs in SLI or Crossfire. Even the highest-end laptops are fundamentally built for portability.

Powerfull gaming laptop?

i am looking for a laptop that will run need for speed shift with ease and very smooth on the top detail and that and will run alot of future games with ease thanks i am not gd at loking for stuff as i just pick one that looks good
i dont realy have allot of cash to blow on one just a basi one will do that i can upgrade every part of it

well i suggest dont get a gaming laptop due to the price low performance specs compared to a desktop because you can get some thing with 2 times more power for the same price and since its a laptop well the cooling will be bad so if you try to overclock it it will fry it and the price is just stupid for something so unstable get a nzxt alpha case and just get some good ish stuff because you can take it to a l.a.n so there sorry for spelling and no puntuaction marks

How does his Gaming laptop still compare to modern day Gaming Laptops?

Well, I am looking at a used DELL XPS 1710 which I know several years ago was top of the line for gaming laptops. This particular one is decked out with the Intel core 2 Extreme and 8800m GTX's in SLi. How well will this still perform in modern day? Does this still run DX10 or 11? Thanks!

Now-a-days Core 2 Extreme is outdated, however it will perform fine for regular use,you know, for watching movies,etc. As far as Gaming is concerned, it will play some old games fine. With new games, it can do well with some lower settings.

Is the Sager 2096 a good laptop compared to others?

Compared to a sony vaio it is better and a bit more expensive but compared to an alienware it is much cheaper but does what I want. Is the Sager a good reliable laptop compared to others if I wanted to use it for some minimal gaming and microsoft word?

You can't go wrong and I personally recommend Dell! There are hidden long-run costs that one does not initially see when you purchase a Notebook PC other than Dell, HP or IBM and later encounter difficulties or attempt buying replacement parts like a battery, or say a keyboard etc.

Also if you're buying for college then I do NOT recommend a Notebook PC bigger than 15.4" bec we have 3 DELLs incl a larger 17" Notebook PC and the larger ones are nice but much too heavy to lug around campus as well as too big for lecture hall desks in college...

I mentioned we own 3 Dell Notebook PCs and why I recommend DELL, HP or IBM for those living in the United States is that those 3 particular PC Notebook manufacturers literally supply all the business Notebook PCs to the major corporations and Government so replacement parts are readily available esp on EBAY at even a more reasonable price than the manufacturer website. Thus in the long run, being able to get the exact replacement part extends the life on your investment.

FYI my 1st Notebook PC was Gateway bec I couldn't afford Dell at the time and what a mistake is was when I needed to purchase a new Notebook battery <= costly bec not readily available like Dells... and FYI I also ran into a similar problem when attempting to upgrade the memory.

How good are the specs on this gaming laptop?

I am buying a gaming laptop, and I was wondering how long these specs will last me, and if I will be able to run games like call of duty modern warfare 2 and crysis. The specs are

intel core i3 2.26 ghz processor
nvidia 260m 1gb graphics card
4 gigs of ram
windows 7

will this run games like crysis and call of duty modern warfare 2? if not what needs to be upgraded?

Its alright. Another question I'd ask about it is if the hard drive is 5400RPM or 7200RPM. Laptop drives normally come 5400, which is obviously slower than the 7200RPM. Where this effects performance is the loading of texture files from the hard drive (background graphics in games). Without seeing further specs on the laptop its hard to generate a good opinion of it. If the Nvidia mobile chipset it has is GTX and in add-on form its great. If its integrated and drawing from the 4 gbs of memory, not so much. All and all I advise people to try to stick with desktops for gaming. Easier to upgrade when games start demanding more, and they can be built small for hauling over to lan parties as well. Lot less heat issues with gaming desktops compared to laptops as well. Can you modify a gaming laptop the same way you can a desktop?

I know nothing about PC's, and I'm thinking about getting a gaming laptop as opposed to a desktop. Mainly because I can take it with me. That being said, can I modify it just as easily as I could a desktop? And are the parts more expensive?

It's no where near as easy to modify a laptop as compared to a desktop. But it is possible, albeit extremely limited. However, seeing as you know nothing about PCs I wouldn't recommend it anyway. RAM and Hard Drives are still very easy to upgrade in a laptop, somethings more-so than a desktop, but aside from that, it's a tricky business. If you're thinking about getting a laptop for gaming you'll need to get something that will stay current for a few years. I always recommend ASUS, simply because they make strong, reliable, and affordable machines. In fact, consider taking a look at ASUS's G75 series of gaming notebooks.
