Budget is $1400 Below, It doesn't have to be expensive, as long as it's okay for Gaming.

Answer
Hi

for gaming get xp. at this stage its better than vista for playing games. this will change in the next 12 months or so but for now its a better proposition.

Get a reasonable dual core and 1-2 gig of ram but make sure your machine has a good video gpu. The gpu is the important part of a gaming rig. You can put in 4gig of ram and a quad core but if you are running a crap graphics chipset your machine will not run recent games with playable frame rates.

The top chipset is the 8800m but you may have to wait a little while for it to be widely available as its only just come out.

See here for a list of gpu's

get a class 1 or a class 2 gpu. the 8xxx series will run directx 10. the 7xxx series only go up to 9c.

Hope this helps.

The answer above was talking about a desktop. You asked for a laptop. Just note that laptops aren't near as good for gaming because they use mobile hardware.

you can upgrade the gpu on that one, and it will be pretty decent with a nice large screen. the dv6 is pretty much the same thing with a smaller screen. I have a dv6, but I use an external monitor.

I'd get this one: http://www.xoticpc.com/forcemsi-16f3-22001-670m-msi-gt60-barebones-p-4346.html

It looks like a great deal. Just upgrade the processor in the customize section and you'll have a nice gaming laptop.
