-250GB Hard Drive
-Intel HD Graphics

Answer
That's a good average computer for doing normal computer activities such as surfing the internet etc.. Here is an example of a real gaming laptop, EON 18 @ www.originpc.com, can come with high end ATI HD 5870 or GeForce 480m, or better yet TWO ATI HD 5870s or TWO GeForce 285s, any way you order it, it can play any game out now,ANY! Also it is rumored that AMD will drop ATI name. Also AMD will soon release the 6000 series graphic cards, heavy duty gaming cards, ready to roll out around November/December 2010. The new 6870s and 6970s are going to dominate. Origin PC created by some personnel of the original Alienware.

I have two questions about buying a laptop?

I've wanted a laptop for a long time, but unfortunately my dad hasn't really liked the idea because of the cost. I was looking online for cheap alternatives to just running down to the local Best Buy and picking one up, and came across Overstock.com

Two questions:

What would be your opinion on purchasing a refurbished laptop from that website? Would you recommend not doing that? Why?

and: My best bet was looking at all the laptops for under $500, which actually had some nice (refurbished) deals. However, all of them ran on XP. My dad is extremely wary of XP because he's heard (mostly from people at stores like Circuit City, Best Buy etc) that Windows is going to stop running XP soon (meaning no updates, new softward etc). However, I have a feeling those people might've been stretching the truth a bit. What's the real deal? If we buy an XP computer are we going to regret it because in a couple months we're not going to be able to update it at all?
(I understand programs and games and such might stop running on XP, but that's not a very big deal [we have a fine Vista desktop computer we'll continue to use]. It's mostly just about updates and virus protection and such).

Any advice would be wonderful! Thank you.
Also, if anyone has any other places (than Overstock.com) I could get a good laptop for cheap, please share!

Answer
don't worry about XP. Windows XP will be supported by Microsoft for sure until 2010/2011 (btw, they still make updates for Windows 2000 - i got the latest update for it on Feb 24 2009).

Windows Vista will soon be the past too because it will be replaced by Windows 7 until September - November this year.

anyway, your first idea wasn't that bad just running to BestBuy and picking one up :)
why not this one, it's new not refurbished

added:
i just checked the refurbished laptops on overstock.com. the problem wouldn't be Windows XP but those laptops itself - these are fossils!! to pay $350 and more for such outdated laptops is stupid because they have little memory, little hard drive space, an oldish processor and are not even able burning DVDs.
you better pay some bucks more, get a new laptop with a 1year warranty, and have a laptop that is up to date.
