Is alienware laptops are only best for gaming ?

Alien

which one is best alienware laptops or desktops ?

Answer
Desktops are always going to be better for gaming purposes. The simple fact is size matters. In particular a laptop is VERY limited in internal space for components. With current technology the MAIN limit in laptops (alienware) or otherwise is going to be the video/graphics card. Gaming is heavily dependent on the ability of your GPU (graphics card) and the medium grade graphics cards ($125-$200) to the high end ($300-600) graphics cards simply cannot be made small enough to fit inside laptops. They can make some of the medium cards small enough for laptops but it is at a very high price and just not worth the money unless portable gaming is of utmost importance.

A desktop on the other hand has literal infinite space -- so a video card that is $400-500 of the "gaming" laptops cost would be $100 or so for the larger sized variation of it to fit into a desktop motherboard.

You can build a very good gaming laptop with an i7 Intel processor and a fantastic video card, 8 gigs of ram (or 12, 16 etc if you wish), huge hard drives, and so on for well under $1000. Where say an Alienware laptop (18) with an i7 cpu, and a Geforce GTX 780 card in it will run you well over $2,000.

If you can build your own desktop (it isn't as hard as it seems) -- you can end up with a top of the line machine for $800 give or take.. if you cannot build it yourself you can still find pre-built machines on sites like newegg.com for well less than Alienware prices.

I have nothing against alienware.. they build decent products -- but they simply can't perform magic with the form factor limitations of the space inside a laptop.

Do some research, and search around http://www.newegg.com for components -- The hardest and smartest part of building (or even getting a prebuilt) a desktop is researching the best combination of components to piece together.

Remember to not skimp out on things like the Power supply unit, or brand names on the RAM, etc. These matter and they do make a difference.

I can recommend that you check into SSD's (Solid state drives) for your Operating system partition (and the programs/games you use the most) -- or, if you have the money, a large enough SSD to be your main hard drive. They are 10 fold faster than any platter hard drive on the market. For brands on SSD's, if you aren't familiar with them and want reliability spend the little extra on Intel SSD's.

As for PSU's -- Antec is a brand you can't go wrong with, although there are several other brands that are among the top reliable on the stable output on the Rails.

For GPU's -- I recommend Nvidia cards.. Though you will get more 'bang for your buck' with an ATI card.

For CPU's -- I recommend Intel,.. again you will get more bang for your buck with AMD cpu's --

You can also buy what are known as barebones systems on newegg (or other sites) -- which will have the case, motherboard, and processor already assembled.. which takes some of the trickier work out of the build -- where you just have to plug in the other components.

Take your time, do a lot of reading.

Good luck,

Best dell gaming laptop other than alienware?

Q. What's the best cheap-ish dell gaming laptop? I don't want to get alienware. I need a laptop that can run WoW fast and smooth without any lags. Please tell me the price of the laptop that you put :D thank u!

Answer
For Dell it would be an XPS 16 or something in the XPS series. Ask which one has the best Graphics card and get that. They usually pack an ATI graphics card because they're cheaper. However, in my opinion you would be better off getting something with an NVIDIA GTS360m or anything in the GTX series. I've had computers die on me in the middle of a game because the ATI graphics driver had an error.

**Also, Dell takes forever to ship because they are customizable. The Toshiba's are pre-built so they get shipped relatively fast because they are already made and ready to go**

The card is the most important spec for gaming. Unless you're getting an Alienware i wouldn't recommend a Dell for gaming. Asus will come close to an Alienware but price is still pretty steep. If you're into gaming and want something similar to an Alienware i would recommend a Toshiba-Qosmio. The prices are fair, and there are videos of it on youtube playing WOW at max settings in the most crowded towns and maps. Most of the Qosmio's have a GTS360m card so you'd be able to do what you need to do on a budget. They can even play Crysis on medium to high settings. Dell, not so much.

***At any rate, i'm pretty sure for the Dell that it'd be an XPS 16, but it is definitely in the XPS series. If I were you i'd look into the Toshiba-Qosmio if you have a choice. The $1499 config gives you blu-ray and all that other fancy stuff. The $1199 would be able to play WOW at max settings. Links are below if you're interested.*** Also, If you're a student Dell does give a 10% discount if that applies to you at all. (Dell EPP Program)

****(All the Dell's are very similar, but the XPS 16 has a slightly better graphics card and the XPS 16 and Studio 17 have the fastest RAM @1333MHz) So the XPS 16 would perform the best out of Dells****

******The two best Dells for you are $1200-$1350, the Toshiba is $1199-$1499. The Toshiba has free shipping and $50 off though. The Dells do not. The Toshiba has slower RAM, but the Graphics Card is only one step below Enthusiast Gaming (The highest level) So it would be faster than the Dells. I know for a fact the Toshiba will play WOW lag free. I have no personal experience with the Dell, but the specs aren't horrible. Either way, any of those 3 computers will get the job done, the Dells might lag for a second here or there, but I don't think it would be anything horrible.*****

~Tax is not included in any of those prices. Expect it to shoot up $100 when you put it in the cart~

~~ As far as bad motherboards go, all companies have roughly around a 4%-8% fail rate with computers. All it takes is 1 static shock during assembly and the whole thing is fried. Just like in Forest Gump "Sh*t Happens." I wouldn't worry about that too much. Dell is more likely to give you a free carrying case and replace your laptop if that was the case. You'll be on the phone for a while though.~~
