I am a complete tech novice....I want to replace my current desktop with a laptop....I need some suggestions. I need a laptop to do the following :
1. Prepare business school applications
2.Surf the net
3. Attend some online courses

As a tech handicap, I do not really know too many criteria for a laptop. But I am looking at something that is
1. Economical
2. Easily available in India
3. Branded
4. Good storage

Your help is much appreciated

Answer
For what you are looking for ANY current laptop will be just fine as you really only need to spend a lot more money if you are looking for high end 3d the graphics (usually for games) or need a high end processor for high demand tasks (like video editing).

What would make the deal for me in your situation? Look for warranty, reputation of the dealer, and the size of the laptop. Nothing worse than having a super powerful super heavy laptop that pulls your arm off between classes.

As for specifications.

Minimum 1GB Ram,
Dual core processor (no Celeron or Sempron)
Nvidia or ATI video solution (Intel GMA has issues)
80GB hard drive minimum (120 or 160 is better)
DVD burner (if only DVD player, CD burner you are getting old machine).

If you can get an Asus or LG those would be my personal favorite brands. Toshiba has a decent product and good worldwide presence and is cheaper. Sony's tend to be solid and fashionable but pretty expensive.

why are the graphics cards on macs so weak?

Tim

For $1000 I can buy a Lenovo Ideapad with GT 750M cards in SLI, meanwhile a 15 inch macbook pro with only a single GT 650M costs almost 1k more. For that price the macbook pro should have a much more powerful GPU.

Items of a company are generally priced to maximize profit for the company. There is a marketing tool that pricing something high has people believing it is of better quality and performance because people think why would anyone be buying it at that price. However, just as very expensive designer goods are bought for the label. Apple has a cult following. The OSX system is easier to use but less versatile and far less freeware software and paid good software available. They throw in midgrade software for audio and video editing. It has a very good battery. The audio codec is a little better. The LCD is good quality. The CPU number is not shown by Apple. You find it here instead:

The actual quality and performance are pretty good, but they are terrible at the price point.
MacBooks being OSX have limited gaming titles anyway, so it takes a Windows dual boot or shell to do gaming. It is also shown that after the first couple of years, their failure rates are average to average plus in the industry.

Keep in mind that most brands also sell low quality cheap laptops and they fail far more often. The better products are at least comparable to Apple over 3 to 5 years.
A squaretrade.com detailed study in 2009 shows Apple excels in reliability while they are under warranty then drops fast. The MacBooks are susceptible to liquid damage and handling damage specifically excluded from the warranty.
The Apple MacBooks take a great laptop skin using the glowing Apple.
Overall, MacBooks are for people that either care little about the price, or are absorbed into the cult, or are too simple minded to operate a Windows PC.
Each company chooses a target market. Lenovo chose North America for special pricing on the Y series gaming laptops for the sale price units. Samsung has excellent pricing in India across their products. HP prices well for a customized laptop where you only want one feature and leave the rest out; such as 1080p but skip backlit keyboard, bluetooth, and every other upgrade.
You will find in general that the Y series Ideapads are good in quality but not tops, because they are trying to keep the price as an affordable value. They are better than Inspirons, Satellites, Pavilions, Acer-Gateway anything, HP_Compaq. You may need a cooling pad. The Y510p can get a graphics card in the ultrabay replacing the DVDRW. That makes GT 750M SLI.

very impressive for the price. They do not sell the module right away as a separate upgrade unless buying it installed. Along with the module they upgrade the AC-DC brick. And ALWAYS get 1080p if at all possible as affordable.
