Laptops under 500 dollars fast good memory?

Jack

So i'm looking for a laptop under 500 bucks, i do a lot of photography so i'd have lots of pictures on there (148 GB) with a photoshop elements or lightroom (1 gb) with a few other programs on there (ill call it 1.5 gb). On top of that i'd have a pretty good amount of music and such from my iTunes (152 GB). I might get a music editing software I'm not sure which kind since i don't have it yet or the equipment but i do know that it's something i want. I'm gonna wanna put a couple games on there like mine craft, a few horror games, stuff like that. I'm also gonna be using video chat. So all of this considered, can some give me some computers under 500 bucks, 600 if necessary, that have room for all of that, and will run applications smooth and fairly quickly (i don't mean like, click it and it's instantly open, but not like i could make myself a sandwich while I'm waiting for it to load slow) and video chat won't lag. Also if someone could also explain to me exactly what steam is that would be great.

Check out that laptop.

It has 1TB of storage with it's blazing fast i5 processor, you've be able to blow through your pictures on Photoshop. You have Windows 8 which can be updated to the latest OS 8.1 for free. You'll be on your way with the 6 hour battery life and being light at around 4.8 pounds. I'll have to admit though that the graphics isn't the best with the Intel HD 4000, but you'll be able to play Minecraft at a high frame-rate with the proper settings.

I do lots of video editing and photo editing, and I recommend not to put all your pictures onto the actual hard drive since it can fail(all eventually do). I would set up some RAID NAS or something for your pictures.

What laptop should i get?

I will be browsing, downloading, gaming, video chat. Has to be a good price like under $400.

Answer
Under $400 highly limits your gaming and weakens your video chat capability. Pretty sure you should want gigabit ethernet to support your video chat and download, so on low price, Dell is out. You could suffer quality, but HP/Compaq (ughh!) maybe your choice unless you get lucky with an Acer or Lenovo sale. http://www.pcworld.com/article/211402/reliability_and_service_laptops.html
Probably looking for the super sale close-outs. Will edit back a couple of possible towards the limit of $400. Remember that the true price without contract of an iphone is over $500.
Let's start with this:

Now the question is can you do better.
Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 0199-A52 Notebook PC - AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P360 2.30GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, 14" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Red, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, but low end ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics, good audio, 5 pounds weight, 0.3mp cam which is low res, but this is a start for comparison. $380 plus tax and delivery in a good brand nice system from a good seller.

$400 plus tax and delivery. AMD Phenom II X4 N970 2.2GHz, 15.6" Display. Doubles CPU power, raises screen to a 15.6. 5.74 lbs and CAM at 1.3 megapixel from Acer is OK. Although not as sleek a system as Thinkpad Edge for style and quality and extra special features, $20 upgrade is worth it by a lot for the CPU and CAM and extra screen size. (Acer is a 5552) Still checking.

This looks interesting @ $430 plus tax and any delivery fee:

Intel® Core⢠i3-2310M (2.10 GHz, 3 MB L3 cache)
The Intel graphics is somewhat better than the HD4250 in the other 2, though can't do much better at your price point. The CPU is just slightly lower than the Acer, but not by very much. You get a 7200rpm HDD and USB 3.0 according to the HP Web site. Camera is OK though it does not show megapixels, it is HD. It is a $580 retail for $430 at Tigerdirect. Seems a little better even with the HP service. It is an OK choice. Just $20 more, and they bump it up to 8GB at $450. Now you are talking value even if a little above your intention.

This Asus at the same $450 is a lot better hardware and brand in general, but cuts it back to 4GB RAM, 0.3mp camera and 5400 rpm HDD and no USB 3.0, but does include a 1 year accidental damage, Altec Lansing speakers. It is a comparison.
