I have an Acer Aspire X3400G and would like to upgrade to the best possible graphics card I can without transplanting the whole works to a bigger case. It currently has a GeForce 9200...which I've been reading is pretty horrible, so ANY kind of upgrade would be a huge improvement. There are so many options for cards out there I dont even know what to investigate.

Answer
You have a special small 220 watt power supply in there. It is supposed to be Delta DPS-220UB A or Lite-on PS-5221-06. 14A on 12V which is 168 watts total. Going to or near the limit shuts it down or blows it out. As the power supply ages, it usually also wears down. There are no PCIe graphics card connectors. The CPU, fans, graphics card, disk drives get powered by the 12V rail.

Any graphics card has to be low profile. There are not many useful options. Cheap cards do not do gaming. Do you feel like trying to put in a 55 watt HD 7750 low profile? It could go a little higher in full use, as the CPU also goes to its maximum power and fan at its fullest. Do not say you were not warned. HD 7750 recommends a 400 watt good PSU.

This is your choices:

You need their power:
Here is the HD 7750:

Here is where you look up G3D scores:

Here is where you estimate its level in gaming, by pull down of Desktop+laptop and RESTRICT, and then estimate where a card belongs based on similar G3D and other higher and lower cards:

Let's say you tried an HD 6570 low profile,
http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=799&graphics=Radeon%20HD%206570%201GB%20DDR3
It draws 44 watts, and they recommend 400 watt PSU and 22 amps on 12V.
Your system is not designed to take any graphics card without a new power supply.
It would be one of these:

but hard to know without measuring and looking for the cables and vents locations.

It is easier to buy a decent inexpensive ATX case and move the parts, since to replace the power supply you pull a lot of things.

Just watch for the fans and don't buy a long card if the case does not support it.

Say you put in an HD 5450. They are inexpensive. Their gaming is around Intel HD 2000.
They are only 19 watts.

An HD 6670 may take a PCIe power connection. You would need to verify that it does not. Besides it is 66 watts, even more than the 7750 and a lower performance.

So,
No new power supply? How much watts do you want to risk?
You only pick from low profile cards without the need of a direct PSU connection.

Put in a new power supply? Just as well to buy a case and standard ATX power supply.

There is no answer to your question. It is a guessing game of risk. It is low profile HD 7750 as the best possible card for about $105, and carry a rabbit's foot and four leaf clover, and hope you don't blow out the power supply when you start to actually use the system.

How about a guess at GT 620 at 30 watts?
That would get you between intel HD 3000 and HD 4000 level, and may not blow out the power supply. You guess what wattage graphics card will bow out your power supply.

44 watt card. Even if it does violate NVidia's specs to do it.

How can PS3/Xbox360 consoles play new games so well when they're so old?

...ok

If you compare PS3/Xbox360 consoles to high end PC's that came out at the same time the consoles did (back in 2007). There is no way the PC can handle the new games such as Crysis 3, Skyrim or Metro 2033 even on very low quality.

I have a PS3 that I bought in 2010 for $400 and also a HP ENVY laptop (with a 1GB dedicated graphics card) bought at the same time for $1500. Now the laptop can't handle any of the new games at all even on low quality but my PS3 still can.

So how is it that consoles are able to handle games much better than PCs?

Answer
Because console versions are extremely "dumbed" down on release. They tone the graphics down a lot and a bunch of other features. The reason why your laptop can't run it, is well honestly, that laptop isn't that good. It is an HP laptop NOT meant for gaming. 1 GB dedicated to graphics card is nothing in all honesty. Most people have 2-3 gb dedicated.

If you want a good pc that gun run next gen games try building one on
