I'm looking to buy a new computer, but I don't know what the best brand would be to get? I basicly just use my computer for the internet, games, and Itunes. What do you recommend???:)

Answer
There is no "best brand". You start at price and decide features that are most important to you.
In general, Samsung, Apple, Lenovo Ideapads and Thinkpads, Asus, MSI, Sony and Toshiba that is not Satellite are in the upper half.

HP-Compaq, HP-Pavilion, Dell Inspiron, Acer-Gateway, Lenovo Essentials, Toshiba Satellite are all in the bottom half, and better grades of HP and Dell could be OK.

Gaming needs GPU Graphics power and which games determine how much.
A higher resolution screen is a big plus.
A better CPU helps.
Lighter in weight is often good.
This is CPU+Graphics

Brand is only one factor. Apple tends to cost a lot of money for the cpu, graphics, ram, and is not software compatible to most gaming without adding Windows. Generally, the price is 50% higher on similar specifications and size/weight, and more than double price if you allow a thicker and heavier system.

There is no exact consistency by brand.

If you are non-USA, brands by country change for value in the purchase.
A Lenovo Y510p in the USA is a great value at +/- $800.

Those that look at brand first, usually need a lot of help to know good from bad. It is very common in China and India to trust by brand first because technology among people and higher quality items purchasing is very new to most people there. Anyone following trends or any single recommendation without documentation and checking up is not a good way to buy.

How good is the performance of Dell Alienware laptops?

HorseAndWo

I've got my eye on a 14" 8gb Dell Alienware laptop (base price is $1300). I plan to use it to play the Elder Scrolls videogames with LOADS of mods (I've already got a list of at least 200 I want for Skyrim alone!), along with everyday Internet and Microsoft program use for home and school. Is this laptop going to be able to handle it all well enough? I'd like to know just how good it is and is it well worth the money? Also, is Accidental Damage Service a good idea to get with it?

Thanks in advance! :)

Answer
Overpriced to their performance.
Still a Dell:

GPU to gaming:

CPU performance:

Heavy as a brick. 14" screen 1.642 in (41.70 mm) thick, 10.171 in (258.35 mm)x 13.314 in (334.98 mm) and about 6.5 pounds in weight.
Compare to 14" MSI GE 40 $1300 13.35"x9.42"x1.14" 4.4 pounds
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152408
and 15.6" Lenovo Y510p GT 750M SLI $1,249 15.23 x 10.19 x 1.41" 6 pounds

M14X, GE40, Y510P
i7-4700MQ, i7-4702MQ, i7-4700MQ
14" 1920 x 1080, 14" 1600 x 900, 15.6" 1920x1080
GT 750M 1GB GDDR5, GTX 760M 2GB GDDR5, GT 750M SLI 2x2GB GDDR5 (only 2 are useful)
Graphics rank 70,61,31 (lower is better)
8GB, 8GB, 16GB
750GB 7,200 RPM, 128GB mSATA + 750GB (7200RPM), 1TB 5400 RPM+24GB SSD acceleration.
DVDRW, no optical drive, no optical drive (Y510p has a GT 750M in the bay)
3 year warranty including accidental damage at Squaretrade.com is $300
http://www.squaretrade.com/laptop-warranty
no deductible, 5 day service. $447 at Dell. 3 year in-home repair including accidental damage at Lenovo is on sale for $191.20.
Lenovo offers free returns including shipping if not satisfied when you receive it.
If you prefer the cheaper 1GPU GT 750M Lenovo you do get the DVDRW and save money and have a bigger screen.
Can't tell the effects of the mods, but Skyrim reports 58.9 frames per second average on GT 750M SLI on ultra 1920x1080 Ultra Preset 16xAF 8xAA
GTX 760M reports 33 on ultra, 57 on high settings (screen is only x900 on GE 40)
GT 750M reports 19.9 frames per second on ultra.

Ignore fancy words and just read specifications. They don't run the graphics card on batteries anyway, so what good is a big fat battery?

Lenovo and Alienware have backlit keyboard. The MSI is not backlit kb.

Is it worth it?
Review what I show above, and then you can look at other options.
At Lenovo look for Student portal or Barnes and Noble Gold Lenovo.

Taking a laptop around a lot as a student probably should have accidental damage coverage. But, not at over $400.

How good is it? Great laptop. Overpriced, heavy for its screen size, but very nice.
Best value? Re-read what I show already.
