Are there any laptops that come with a backlit keyboard, in order to facilitate using one in darker lighting conditions?

There are plenty of "gaming laptops" that had backlit keyboards. Though it's mainly to look cool. :)

I'm on my way to college and was looking around at some laptops with backlit keyboards but all of them are $1,000 or more. Can someone give me some laptops with backlit keyboards for below $500.

Unfortunately, most backlit keyboards are for gaming systems, or systems that are not as good a value. The only decent value priced laptops I know of are the Toshiba P750 series, and it has to be confirmed. The link breaks by Y/A

Not sure whether they sell cheaper at Newegg as I found for HP laptops in general.
I also believe Toshiba is like Dell about discount codes. You intensively search the web and their web site to see if there are any. Lenovo shows you the codes - they are just a formality.
And, I think Bassman1 works for Toshiba, and did not point you at the P750 series.

Problem is, you can get a lot better. If you can get 10% off with email sign-up, Lenovo Y570 base model is $630. It has GT 555M graphics, the higher speed 500GB 7200 HDD, Blutooth, 2mp cam, gigabit ethernet, but no backlit keyboard.
