Does HP make good gaming laptops? (in comparison to other mainstream brands of similar price)?

I've never heard of HP when it came to talking about gaming laptops. I was wondering whether HP makes good gaming laptops, and I'm not talking about comparing HP to Alienware or other extremely expensive gaming laptops, but rather in comparison to other companies that make gaming laptops in the below-$1000 range, such as ASUS.

If I were you, I'd go with the Asus G72Gx ($999). Its the system I'm currently running and its fantastic. Also, it literally has one of the best mobile graphics card on the market. If you want a comparable HP or Dell, you should expect to spend at least twice as much.

And to be honest, this computer is comparable to Alienware systems costing over $2500.

I need a laptop because I'm always traveling so no desktop. My budget is $700 and If possible I would like it to be thin and small. Because I would like it to be for school too. I will also play DayZ but I'm OK with medium settings on there. Thanks for all post!
