Is a laptop the way to go for my next computer?

My brother in law is of the opinion that desktops are on their way out unless you need real intense numbers crunching or editing high def video.
He suggests getting a decent laptop and hooking it up to my current desktop monitor.
I use my computer for all the basics you can think of. The only taxing programs would be games. I am a bit of a gamer but don't have to have all the graphics on the highest settings when I play

Answer
Depends on what you want, and what you will use your computer for. I must say that I have switched to a laptop, and I am very happy with the change; however, I am on the road all the time (so a desktop doesn't really help me). If you're home every evening, then a desktop will probably still make you happy.

In short:
Desktops are cheaper (more bang for your buck), and can be upgraded easily. Their components can be swapped out and customized to your liking, and can swapped again in the future for cheap upgrading.

Laptops are mobile, but are more expensive. A gaming laptop will run you $600-700 minimum, and they can't really be upgraded (except for the RAM and Hard Drive).

For your reference, here is a list of laptop graphics cards; these determine how well your laptop can run games. I would recommend a GT 555M or better.

(Click on an individual card, and scroll down to the bottom of the review to see actual gaming benchmarks. Remember 30+ fps (frames per second) is considered "playable.")

You can find reviews for desktop graphics card at Toms Hardware. This link is a list of best graphics cards for the money. These cards can be added to a desktop to improve its gaming performance:

You just need to make sure your power supply has enough power to handle the card. NewEgg and Amazon usually have the best prices.
